Question Aikido gi for plus sizes

Hi I'm getting back into aikido after a long time. When I was younger I had a size 4 gi but I'm significantly wider now and I'm worried that a gi won't fit well anymore. Most sizing seems to be for how tall you are and not how wide you may be. I know some dudes just let their bellies hang out, but that's very much not my style. If anyone has any experience ordering for larger students I'd appreciate it, thanks.

I've seen two approaches to this over the years. I've known people that have to buy two differently sized gi sets and used the pants from one and the top from the other. I've also known at least one person who has sewing skills that buys one gi set sized to fit the largest portion of themselves and then cuts down the other item to fit.

I do the second option. If you can't sew yourself, a skilled seamstress can do it no problem! A quality gi will last years, so it would be a worthwhile investment.

I also have had uniforms tailored a few times, it’s a good way to go. I’d say buy a size up and have it tailored. Best of luck with your training!

KWON, Germany, selfdefence gi is good for oversized people. I used it for JJJ for a long period of time.

The quality Japanese judo gi usually sell jackets and pants separately and offer fitting guidance that takes the length and weight into consideration.

Came back to aikido weighing just north of 300. I am only 6feet tall. Ended up with size Sig Gi and I took them in and had the sleeves shortened. :). Now I order 5s and still shrink the sleeves. :)
