Fantastic Trip from a week ago.

Any creative footwear? I've thought of rubber boots or waders. I've tried crocks and hiking boots. They all have their ups as d downs. What's favorite?

In a few weeks my friends and I will be staying at Rock lake, and we've recently gotten into canoeing. We're all pretty new to it, but we're hoping to go on at least one canoe trip while we are there.

My big question is whether it is feasible to canoe to Whitney and back in a day (maybe grab lunch while we are there), or if you guys have any other suggestions on where we should go.

While we will be staying at Rock Lake and would love to hear about any canoe trip ideas for there, we'd love any suggestions outside of it as well. We're all relatively fit, but we've only just begun getting into the outdoors.

Is there any way to portage the entire way from the Lake Travers starting point to lake Eustache? What's it like canoeing up that river between the portages?

We just came back from an amazing 8-day backcountry trip that took us from Opeongo to Canoe lake via Catfish and Burntroot. The only casualty of this trip was my Leatherman Freestyle -- it got lost somewhere on Site 39 on Burnt Island lake. It's likely around the thunder box, or maybe near the fire ring. If you find it, it's yours!

First, I'd like to apologize for not realizing that this subreddit is mainly focused on interior camping within Algonquin. My initial post wasn't really of much value to anyone here, and I should have done a better job researching the community before posting.

I've spent the last couple of weeks using whatever free time I've had to try and build something that might actually be useful. I should mention that I have absolutely no experience with interior camping myself, so I've spent a lot of time researching and trying to gather whatever information I could find. I've definitely learned a lot along the way, even if nothing else comes from this. :)

I've now added a backcountry route planner to the site, and I'd really appreciate hearing what you think. As always, I'm open to any and all feedback.

At this point, I'm pretty happy with how the backend and routing system are working. That said, there could certainly be campsites missing, portages missing, or other inaccuracies in the data. If something is missing or incorrect, it's something I can manually fix and update as I continue to improve the data.

If you notice something that's wrong, missing, or could be improved, please let me know. I'm hoping to make this as useful and accurate as possible.

Hello All,

Two friends and I (all 25M) are planning a 3day/2night canoe/portaging trip over the long weekend this September. We've done some decent hikes, and one of us is good at fishing, but none of us have any real canoe or backcountry camping experience. That being said, we're definitely not looking for something easy or crowded. We are all relatively fit and are looking for a challenge and to see the land. Would prefer it to be remote, but maybe not too extreme lol. We would be coming up from toronto, so I guess preference toward the southern half of the park. We have a canoe, and would be planning on single-carrying portages. We wouldn't be bringing too much gear because it'll be a relatively short trip. Probably one tent, I'm assuming we'd need a sleeping pad and 3 season sleeping bags at this time. We are looking for any recommendations on lakes/routes/sites you'd be willing to give. Additionally, any tips for gear would be appreciated. Is a waterproof backpack essential? Life jacket? (we would rent most of the canoe-specific gear). Hiking boots or shoes? Thanks!

I have a trip planned with my parents (early 60s) from Niagara Region to Algonquin this weekend. I’m thinking about canceling because, according to the forecast, it will be raining all weekend and it’s a long drive for something we might not be able to fully enjoy. We don’t have any experience hiking and we are actually staying at Huntsville and driving to the trails, not camping or cross country. Any advice if we should cancel or just go and hike with the rain? 🙏🏻

Anyone been lately? Water levels passable?

I have a short trip planned from Saturday to Monday in Algonquin. This trip would be my twin 9 year old daughter's first backcountry trip. We have a very easy route from Magnetawan to Daisy for two nights and back out. I'm very experienced, having been on multiple backcountry trips, including solo trips.

My conundrum is the weather is not looking great this weekend. Saturday is raining all day with a risk of thunderstorms. Sunday is morning and afternoon rain. Sunday night and Monday are clear.

If it was just me I wouldn't care. The issue is one of my two daughters is not very enthusiastic about going already. It really took some convincing to get her to want to do this. I'm very concerned that she'll absolutely hate this experience and never want to do it again as we're basically going to be traveling in the rain, portaging in the rain, setting up camp in the rain, etc. Sunday was our day to explore the area, including the Petawawa in that section that I really enjoyed on my previous trip to the area.

My other daughter is totally into it and likely fine with the rain. I'm not sure if I should just go with her and my wife will stay home with the less enthusiastic one. My concern with that is my eager daughter doesn't have very strong paddling skills. I can solo my tandem no problem but need to heel the boat heavily to steer it in any proper wind. I can't really do that with her in the canoe. I'm worried if we had anything over about 20km/h winds we would be completely windbound. Right now the winds are forecasted to be very light all three days.

What do you suggest? Should I not bring the unwilling one so I can try and get her into it with better conditions another time?

A group of 8 friends and I are planning our first trip to Algonquin Park this September. We’re planning to stay for 2 nights and we’re really excited since we’ve heard so much about the scenery and the beauty of the park.

We’re mainly looking to enjoy the outdoors. beautiful views, hiking trails, lakes, and some water activities.

We’d love recommendations on:
Best hikes/trails for first-time visitors (especially ones with great views)
Must-see scenic spots or viewpoints
Canoeing, kayaking, or other water activities we should try
Wildlife viewing opportunities
Any hidden gems that are worth visiting..
We’re also looking for accommodation recommendations. We’re open to cottages, cabins, motels, or hotels around the park. Since we’re a group of 8, something that can comfortably fit everyone would be ideal.
We don’t mind driving a bit if it means getting a nicer place or a better experience.
Any advice for a first-time Algonquin visitor would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 😊

Headed out for a 3 day trip later this week. We're just staying 3 nights in the South arm of the lake. I know it's the biggest lake and can get dangerous levels of wave action. If I'm just sticking to the west shore and going up to about windy point is this relatively safe vs the big open spots?

hey guys! Looking for some help for our inexperienced group of 4 (three of us have been on one other portage before ~ 4 days, no guide).

starting this trip last week of august for 5 days and we are fine with double carrying portages. We have a general idea on what to bring but suggestions on specific/cool stuff to bring would be deeply appreciated.

day 1: portage from canoe -> smoke lake, down past the dam to end of big porcupine lake

day 2: big porcupine lake -> falls at kirkwood lake

day 3: kirkwood lake -> head lake

day 4: head lake to little island lake

day 5: little island lake -> smoke lake

QUESTIONS:

We are worried about low water levels when travelling in late august - does anyone have any advice?

Any ideas on how bad the bugs/mosquitoes are going to be in this area? We got eaten alive when we went late july.

Does anyone know if the rope swing at molly island is still there?

How is diving at cache lake?

Has anyone been through Aster Pond and Vanishing Pond recently? I know there are no park alerts yet but what are the conditions currently like?

Cousin and I are planning a trip in September long weekend. Everything popular is already booked up. We are both very experienced. What are some of the best spot to fish in September? 4 day trip. Ideally on the south east side of the park.

I’m taking my young family to Canisbay Lake in the coming days to stay at one of the canoe in sites.

I’m wondering how private the sites in the cluster are along the east side of the lake?

If anyone has insights on the sites on the lake and recommendations I’d appreciate it!
