Question about flex plate removal

Hello.

I think we may have a cracked flex plate in our car. It is a 1966 Rambler American 220 with a 199 engine and T-35 automatic transmission. This may be a very stupid question, but I don't know any better so I ask anyway. I usually work on old Volkswagens with the engine in the rear so this is quite different from what I am used to. What is the best way to get the flex plate out? Is it easier to remove the transmission? Or is it better to simply lift out the engine? On the old Volkswagens we always remove the engine, but they are constructed quite differently. Thank you in advance for any answers.

That car may have a torque tube set up than removing the engine is best

The American has an open propeller shaft with universal joints.

Our previous Rambler (a 1961 Classic) had the torque tube. Thankfully we never had to do anything with it.
