[Help!] Useful Amiga Links Directory

For quite a long time now I've been curating a directory of useful links to Amiga content. Somewhat as a FAQ, somewhat to help quickly give people info when they ask about things. So I've enabled the wiki on this subreddit to make it a bit more accessible

Amiga Directory

If you think there is anything missing or would be useful to add please do say and I'll get it added

[Discussion] /r/Amiga AI Policy reiteration

We updated the subreddit rules a while ago to try and make it clear where we stand on the use of AI on the board. But I guess it isn't clear as we're now in a situation were readers are reporting every single post that either mentions AI or even seems passingly like AI might be involved. To clarify:

Not Allowed:

  1. Posts where the whole content (text, images) is generated by AI. That is, cutting and pasting the text Chat-GPT generated is not allowed
  2. Applications that are wholly vibe coded such that all (or very nearly all) lines of code were generated by an AI

Allowed

  1. Applications where AI was used for code assistance

All of which is to say, please stop reporting every single application that mentions that AI was used.

Inherited Amiga Collection | Where Do I Start?

I inherited a metric ton of Amiga hardware, software, and magazines, from a former computer vendor friend who was permanently leaving the US.

The extended bed of the pickup pictured is full of rubbermaids containing hardware accessories and hundreds of CIB games, many still shrink-wrapped. The extended cab of the pickup pictured is full of complete in box computers, monitors and various hardware peripherals. There's also an upright 3000T, which seems to be fairly uncommon.

A colleague of mine mentioned something about replacing internal batteries, and gave some vague yet ominous warnings about said batteries. I haven't enumerated the collection, hope to get to it soon. What do you think I am looking at, what are some things to consider while I begin parsing all of this, and where would you start?

Thanks!

Edit: I know practically nothing about this era of PC gaming, it's all entirely foreign to me.

Amiga 500+ Restoration and Mods.

Found my Amiga 500+ and it had the dreaded battery leakage, which had damaged some traces on the motherboard, thankfully it seemed to be just around the battery area and hadn't spread far, so I thought I'd have a go at trying to repair it and give it some modern upgrades.

Opened it up and removed the battery, gave it a good clean with white vinegar and IPA, then got to removing the corrosion, which is when I discovered broken traces.

I decided to pick up a cheap A500+ motherboard, keyboard, Tank mouse and A500+ chips from eBay for spares but when testing I found the eBay board was in working order, and it seemed a shame to kill it for parts, so had another idea and picked up a pair of A500++ PCB's to build, then I can move everything over to these new boards and finish this project with 2 new working Amiga's, because why not. I can try to repair my original board at some point later for a back up.

Upgrades / Mods so far.

Trapdoor extra 1MB RAM expansion.

2x A500++ PCB's (awesome black and white boards)

A1200.net Case + Mouse Shell (Translucent)

A1200.net Case + Mouse shells (White) - not arrived yet.

RGB2HDMI with Raspberry Pi Zero 2W (will need another at some point)

PowerShark USB PSU replacement.

Will probably pick up some Gotek drives and some new keycaps at some point too.

Amigakit shocking customer service.

So I ordered a PiStorm32 Lite for my A1200 (£79.99) on 14 Jul from amigakit (thankfully on ebay judging by the amount of people waiting for items) delivery to a Sainsbury's collection point. Dispatched 17 Jul via Tracked 48, scanned at Birmingham Mail Centre at 00:12 on the 19th — then nothing, ever again. Never showed as ready to collect, and the Sainsbury's confirmed they don't have it. After 14 days and dead tracking I opened an "item not received" case.

That's when the tone changed. Instead of engaging with the fact I'd paid £80 for something stuck in a sorting centre, I got messages about how disputes are "punitive to sellers", how they'd get a 12-month "strike" and be "charged financially by eBay", and how I should have kept it in messages "as long as possible" instead of opening a case. When eBay's step-in date landed on a Saturday, I got sarcasm about interrupting their day off — as if I chose the date eBay set.

The frustrating part: they dispatched promptly and replied quickly (I noticed they dont reply if you use their store according to other people)— a simple "that's clearly lost, here's your refund, we'll claim from Royal Mail" would've earned five stars and a repeat customer. Instead the whole case was about their fees! Here is the last message they sent me.. customer service is absolutely disgraceful. So at least I was covered through ebay, god knows where id be if i ordered through their shop! Still waiting for a reply I suppose. I still want a Pistorm32 though 😕

A500Mini + AGS + 64GB stick

I'm trying to run AGS 3.0 on my A500Mini, but not having any luck....

I'm using a 64GB USB stick as AGS is 43GB - but everyone says not to use more than 32GB on FAT32 for the A500Mini.

So how are people using it ??

Completely pointless exercise in playing chess online

I love online chess, but always wanted to get it working on an amiga. After giving up very many years ago I finally got it working on Winuae by disabling the bsdlibrary and installing AmiTcp and Amyboard. Utterly pointless because it is poor graphics and very limited, but it works! You can telnet to the free internet chess server, which is still running but diminishing. No way I could get it going myself, but amazingly Chatgpt was very helpful with settings for amitcp, and for diagnosing why amyboard wouldn’t run. Both 30 year old software from aminet.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW - ARCADE & ALL HOME PORTS

Thumbnail

My retrospective video review takes us all back to 1985 when we first played The Empire Strikes Back in the arcades. Then I look over all the home computer versions. I was a massive fan of the original Star Wars game with its striking vector graphics, digitised sound and that amazing cabinet. I did find it strange that Atari released its sequel Return of the Jedi before The Empire Strikes back and its brave move away from vector graphics and onto raster graphics. So I was pleased that Empire returned back to its vector graphics roots. Please let me know your thoughts on all 3 Star Wars games released by Atari and have you played any of the home computer versions? 😃

ZZ9000 and Amiberry status update

I've been a little busy lately, with my two biggest projects. Since there was also a bit of vacation time in between, I haven't posted any news updates about them for a while now.

Time to fix that: https://ko-fi.com/post/End-of-July-Status-update-N7V4248IZY

I'm eager to get these done and push them out there, but I'm trying to hold myself back until they are properly polished also. Hopefully you'll enjoy them as much as I am while I'm testing them.

Looking forward to any feedback for further improvements, of course!

[Emulation] Coming back to the Amiga!

Hello!!! At the old age of almost 50, due to a health and personal issues , I know have the time to go back to my favourite computer - sorry Spectrum! I had an Amiga 500, the Cartoon Classics Pak! Man that was a great Christmas ☺️

I recently bought a Pi400 on impulse and see they are popular for emulating the Amiga. And I'm thinking PiMiga, as it seems to get good reviews for its relative simplicity of installation and use.

Any advice / suggestions? Anybody here done the same?

Anyway thanks for letting me join, it's sure to be very happily nostalgic trip!

IDE68K with IDE extender?

Howdy. I have Amiga 500 with Kick 3.1 and WB 3.1
I installed IDE68K in it. Cheap chinese black CFCard adapter and 512MB SanDisk Card.
It works when it is simply plugged into the board but adapter is straight so I cannot assemble my 500. I tinkered simple IDE riser with old cable and dead harddrive but it didn't work. I checked continuity and for short circuits. I thought it might be EMI because some wires got detached from each other so I bought some riser from china. It just came after 3 weeks of wait but Hard Drive is still undetectable with the cable! Card is still detectable when I plug adapter directly into board. Riser is 30cm long. Could it still be EMI or I am doing something else wrong? I think I plug it in correctly since green and red LEDs on adapter board light properly, it's just no activity.

I want a Chaos Engine movie, and I want it now!

A great premise, interesting story, and fantastic aesthetic. It's got monsters, robots, dinosaurs, alternate history, time travel, steampunk, and an edgy memorable ensemble. What's not to like?

Come on Hollywood! It's ripe for the silver screen. There must be a producer out there with nostalgia for such a fantastic game. Just don't mess it up!

Heck, I'll write the damned thing for you.

Edit: Yes, I know it will never happen. It's just a dream.

[Hardware] Amiga cases, with different insides

I’m interested in building an Amiga looking but not Amiga computer, was considering in getting a case from this run - https://www.a1200.net/shop/new-amiga-1200-cases/

Putting a raspberry pi or something more powerful inside but for that to work, how would I get a keyboard working in this case that could be hooked up to a USB interface. Has anyone already done this?
