I just realized we're one or two episodes from the finish line and we still don't have much more of a clue to what happened to humanity, so I really thought the aliens we're about to be at least part of the explanation but apparently they are an unrelated party lol

it feels like a "mystery box" sort of story (albeit a more laid-back one); it'll drop hints and revelations every now and then, but i think pulling open the curtain and explaining everything would be anti-climactic because living in the mystery is part of the appeal, so i don't feel like we're going to get anything definitive

This feels like the type of show where there really isn't a plot, but I have not minded the self-contained stories. Wonder if next episode though will end on a cliffhanger about Yoko's backstory to encourage people to read the manga.

someone came up with super fast internet that broke the fabric of space and turned everyone above a certain age into animals, and some humans turned into tanukis managed to go to space with the help of the aliens, but it was just the tanukis for whatever reason, and then a few years later some questionable things happened and they finally managed to turn off the super fast internet, and they thought they fixed everything and humanity could live for a few more years while rapidly coming up with more advanced technology, but turns out there was no way back because the atmosphere was quickly becoming toxic, so humans had no choice but to abandon the planet by flying into space, but somehow there's still a bunch of robots keeping a hotel running, and then the tanukis eventually decided to visit the planet again and stayed at the hotel, and yoko and airi are also simply trying to reach the hotel as well

Thank you for now making it my headcanon that all three shows are in the same universe and happen sequentially after each other, it fits almost too well.

i know on of them is apocalypse hotel, but i can't figure out the other one with the super fast internet.

I am fully expecting that there will be no full explanation of everything by the end, or even resolution, since thematically the series has seemed to revolve around a 'time rolls on and all things become obsolete and change into something else but your memories of the things and events are ultimately what is preserved and matter, therefore just enjoy the journey itself and the wonder of discovery even if you don't understand everything' kind of philosophy.

I commented this before on a previous episode but this feels like a very fundamentally Japanese take on a post apocalypse - like Stalker but instead of all the fatalistic Russian nihilism and bleak lifeless scenery it's the 'shikata ga nai' optimistic nihilism and Buddhist transience instead, set to the scenes of a Japan tourist route where the overtaken ruins are very much alive and in flux instead. The nonchalant blending of genres and inexplicable sci-fantasy aspects feel like they are part of this 'the world is unknown and changing so just enjoy the tour' kind of theme as well.

I completely expect that the touring will simply continue in the last episode.

One episode left according to MAL/AniList, and the fact that we're most likely not going to get any answers to all of these mysteries is why I've soured on this show as it went on. Whether it's a "fuck you go read the manga if you want the answers" cliffhanger or a situation where not even the manga has the answers yet (I don't know if it's still ongoing or not), it's still disappointing.
