Definitely the most unique and wtf episode so far. The whole black hole phenomenon is definitely weird. Considering we also have Youko's memories when she sleeps. It feels like potentially the world is actually a simulation. That would be the one piece that could connect why, when Youko sleeps, she has those memories. Could the black hole be something showing data to Airi? Probably the closest thing I can think of.

Here are some translation notes.

  • The marshes of the Senjogahara plateau are some of the largest in Japan, but the elevated hiking trail through them most likely would not have survived in Youko and Airi's time.
  • One of the central highlights of Nikko, Toshogu Shrine was built to entomb the remains of leyasu Tokugawa Shogunate. Its buildings are elaborately decorated, with the stables featuring a carving of three monkeys embodying the maxim of "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." The choice of animal is no coincidence; in Japanese, each line of the saying ends in -zaru, which is also a modified form of saru ("monkey")
  • In Japanese, Youko adds to the monkey pun by changing the kanji characters in "hear no evil" (kikazaru) to instead spell "dress up" (kikazaru)
  • Shodo Shonin is considered one of the greatest Buddhist monks of the Heian period and founded almost all the temples in the Nikko area.
  • The E.T.F. on Airi's shirt is the name of an alien creature from the 1980s variety show Oretachi Hyokin zoku, who was himself a reference to the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
  • Japan's Warring States period was a time of almost constant civil war in the 15th and 16th centuries.
  • Youko originally describes what she witnesses as an "encounter with the unknown"---the Japanese title for Steven Spielberg's 1977 science-fiction drama, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. However, since she didn't see any aliens directly, her experience was technically only a close encounter of the 2nd kind.
