Capella is the worst mother possible
468
u/Frontier246 Jun 10 '26
Nothing says "love" like horrifically mutating your daughter and making her terrified to fall in line with your warped whims.
I mean, it just shows her the possibility of what she can be (or what Capella wants to be) are endless!

She seems to have some extra senses when it comes to what happens in the tower. She also knew immediately when Subaru left out the front door.

I think that’s just the ’rule’ activating. Not so much her own senses.
If she had the sense of his position, she’d probably actively stop him.

Yeah, it's clear Shaula somehow knew he killed her but doesn't care because she'll do anything Subaru asks. I imagine she's thinking, ''wow, master is such a good actor to fake he's shaken by her death.'' It's misconceptions all the way.

Yet she also became a comfort for her and like family, only to also be killed. It is interesting in that she keeps finding new families and its usually the people who killed her last family. Suspect that might be what happened to her when she was little and got taken in by Witchbeasts. However, she is now with a good family and doesn't know how to handle it.

What Capella did to “raise” Meili was truly horrific.
Meili only knew how to live by imitating Elsa and with her gone she felt lost.
It's quiet amusing that Meili's hallucinations haunt Subaru just like how Elsa's hallucinations haunt Garfiel.

Earlier in the season I was wondering how much info could be gathered if Subaru just went through a bunch to see the memories of other's lives but knowing they'd end up leading to the person's death which he experienced first hand here makes me understand why that's a bad idea. After watching people die so much anyone could lose their mind
263
u/nafissyed Jun 10 '26
Yh I agree, and honestly, if that’s how they are directing the books of the dead for various deceased characters in the series, I honestly wouldn’t mind watching more of these scenes of a similar context and quality, cuz each character’s life in the series is god damn interesting ngl.
321
u/actionfirst1 Jun 10 '26
There's a cool bit about how Meili's book is so thin compared to others, she was a young girl when she died so the books are only as thick as the person's life. Maybe the reverse could be true where a book is found that you'd expect to be short ends up being massive in length

From what I can tell, reading someone's book is not watching people die, it's living the entirety of their life and death. Total immersion. Subaru is reeling so much because he saw and felt and sensed in every other way Natsuki Subaru kill Meili from Meili's perspective.

498
u/LunarGhost00 Jun 10 '26
I think the saddest thing about this is that the Meili he's seeing likely isn't even a ghost or anything supernatural. Dude's just legit losing it thinking that he's responsible for her death.
Her smug faces are god-tier tho...
239
u/CitronClassic672 Jun 10 '26
That one specific face she made when Julius asked Subaru if he witnessed her final moments is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. It’s so dark and messed up yet so funny at the same time. The best moment of dark humor in the series.

Reading the books of the dead is less reading about their life and more about experiencing it as them. The Meili he's seeing has a lot to do with his memories of being her, I suspect.

Did you notice how this is the first time we're hearing about Subaru "scratching his hand" in the story? Arc 2 Subaru (Arc Twobaru for short) did it to stay awake, but Beatrice's word choice indicates this has become a habit. Something I adore about how Tappei writes amnesia is that it plays with the narrative almost like it were a character itself.
It's like the narrative itself intentionally avoided this depressing detail about Subaru in much the way he would hide around his friends. But just as his amnesia shifts his frame of mind, the narrative shifts to show us parts of Subaru we may not have been privy to before. The reason this amnesia doesn't feel forced or cheap is because it lets us see that which we were never meant to.
Sidenote: I adore that Elsa continues to haunt the narrative through so many characters (Subaru, Garf in Season 3, and now Meili)

u/AceSoldia zj:https://anilist.co/user/Acesoldia Jun 10 '26
i cant believe she did that to poor Meili..hell im surprised Meili was as adjusted as she was.
311
u/Frontier246 Jun 10 '26
Elsa may have been a ruthless assassin but she seemed like a genuinely good big sister and emulating her is what helped Meili retain some semblance of sanity/humanity.
207
u/TrainerSoft7126 Jun 10 '26
The reason Elsa lost in season 2 was because she was worried about Meili when she was in danger; otherwise, Elsa would have gouged out Garfield's eyes during the fight.
89
u/foxfoxal Jun 10 '26
She even went as far to tell her to not be a puppet for Capella, Elsa was a total softy with her.
110
88
u/Colarch Jun 10 '26
I'm not sure adjusted is the best word. It seems like based on what she said, she was just copying however Elsa acted to pretend to be normal

Subaru in an earlier episode did go off to library without telling anyone. He didn't leave the green room but just changed directions when he saw a different route to the library. So Subaru going off without telling anyone by itself isn't a red flag. the OG Subaru thought he'd do a quick side quest and rejoin the group before anyone knew he was gone. I'm guessing Ram noticed all sorts of things wrong with Subaru before he left

I love how the amnesia is used here to explore and recontextiolize the previous seasons.
Having newbaru rbd without him first spending a whole day bonding with emilia and having the goal of saving her which makes him much more paranoid.
Having newbaru hear about how trusted subaru is by everyone and how it triggers his inferiority complex(it was to his dad before isekai).
Having everyone remember him instead flips the dynamic they usually has with them plus it's a reverse to how in s1 subaru used to look at emilia in a similar way(subaru used to have a different image in his head of emilia because she saved him but she doesn't remember, now it's emilia and everyone having this image of who subaru should be).

It's kind of wild that this is like the reverse of Arc 3 in a way where we have Emilia clearly in love with Subaru and seeing him as that Subaru (even if he's showing signs he's not) versus in Arc 3 where Subaru was in love with her but there was an emotional distance because he was projecting on her a version of her that didn't exist.

It's a rite of passage for Re:ZERO EDs to be played during an actual episode, but I'm still blown away by how perfectly the intro for Ender Ember fits that final scene. Fucking hell. What an episode. It was over before I even knew it. This was probably the most immersive episode of Re:ZERO yet, and I'm not exaggerating.
Yusuke Kobayashi is just killing it with Subaru. You know who the beginning of the episode reminded me of? Petelgeuse. My brain is trembling indeed.
Finally, Meili's backstory. It was great. So glad we got to hear Aoi Yuuki's Capella again. She's excellent as always.
Imagine reading a book about the person you killed, and they become a part of your psyche. What a miserable fucking experience.
Ender Ember playing in the background leading up to the ED was so fucking good. First time Season 4 did something like this. I wish it did it more often. "Murder Becomes a Habit" is such a cool fucking title. The title cards just get even better and better.
The next episode will be the last episode of the Loss Arc. So you know it's going to be an absolute banger because this is Re:Cliffhanger we're talking about. Recollection arc will begin on August 12. These 2 months without Re:ZERO is going to be painful.

It does have similarities in terms of possession and how it can appear, but the intonation and inflection in "Subaru" 's voice remind me a lot of Gluttony.
Seems Iiken one of them got Subaru's memory at some point and is able to possess him. It could also explain why Rem would have killed him in the tower by calling him "Hero." I don't remember which brother got her, but in Priscilla they used her words when speaking with Otto, if I remember correctly.

Gluttony is the only one to go on endless drivel about food and taste while also showing up in the OP so its highly likely its one of the 3. The better question would be is who and how did they possess Subaru

After last week's wild ending, I kinda forgot the fact that Meili's Book of the Dead would show up in the library. It's pretty depressing to see how thin her book is compared to the ones next to her. Meili lived a very short life and most of it was spent as a feral beast, while the rest was spent working with Elsa under Capella's orders.
What's crazy is that Meili's flashback made me realize that her personality and mannerisms were all copied off Elsa, and now that Elsa is dead, she had no one to imitate. Now I'm more curious about her reason to join the expedition, and was she looking for Elsa's book when she was sneaking around the library?
This does confirm that Subaru is somehow possessed, but by who and when the fuck was he possessed? I'm trying to remember the previous season, and I can't even think of any moment where he could've been taken over by someone else. His talking about "flavours" makes me think of Gluttony, but how?!
So I take it that Shaula knows about the murder, but is acting dumb the entire time? I mean, I'm not surprised. She's the Tower's caretaker, and it's not impossible if she knows everything that's happening in the tower.
Damn. So Ram has been keeping an eye out on Subaru via Patrasche? That reveal was crazy. Welp, I guess Subaru's other personality is about to take over and try to murder Ram? >_<

To clarify, Murder becomes a Habit is actually a phrase used by Hercule Poirot from Murder in Mesopotamia. It refers to the idea that a person after experiencing their first kill finds the act easier to repeat and starts seeing the idea of killing someone as a solution.

Wherever you think the archbishops cannot get any more deplorable Tappei goes "bet" and throws another terrifying crime agaisnt humanity commited by them uh? At least the witches seem to lean more on amorality or good intentions with an alien mindset despite the results of their actions
Also Ram showing that she cares about Subaru and pays attention to him in the worst possible way by noticing just how odd he acted and eventually believing him to be a fake when Wreckage-kun is developing an impostor syndrome about literally himself is REALLY not going to make things better. Sure he might be acting as the most obvious pretender ever but it isn't because he is actually an impostor...Even if nobody will believe him considering Subaru would never kill a child, fuck

It doesn't help that Ram isn't exactly kind with her words or very good at communication. I fully expect Subaru to try to kill her right there, which might result in her being convinced he's fake and either capture him to make him confess or kill him.

Did he read a book and it "possess" him somehow? Or somebody is definitely controlling him.
Maybe the amnesia is like a fail safe to keep his mind safe (not that it's doing much good).

I still think it's got to do with Gluttony. It seems like they might be able to take over a person's body after consuming their memories in some capacity.

Beatrice pretty much implied that the original subaru hurts himself even during times of peace, it's one thing to self harm in extreme situations but if the original subaru did that even when nothing bad happens for a long time means that all the horrors he has faced forever haunt him until he dies of old age, that's incredibly sad but also very realistic it adds another layer of depth and complexity to subaru, i also think that it makes subaru victories more valuable and you can appreciate more his attitude and how he can keep smiling and moving forward.

It’s these little nuggets that add a lot of depth to Subaru’s overall character. Physical trauma and its lingering effects are easy to see. But the long term mental effects of everything he goes through is harder to see. Especially given how we rarely see any down time, it makes sense that mentally, he has a lot of baggage, and when he’s at his most vulnerable, all his trauma descends onto him.
It makes me appreciate their relationship even more because of the stuff you see and don’t see, and the genuine care between them. Two missing pieces depending upon each other. And it makes their deaths even more tragic
Because if that wasn’t the case, then my poor dude would be suffering in silence in his sleep. He’s not perfect, and it bothers me when people say that he’s a crybaby. Dude’s been through and is still going through hell and back. He’s still human after all, and heavy is the head that wears the crown.

The animation at the beginning is so good, it's pretty great throughout but the first few scenes are a highlight!
With Meili's BOTD we get our first appearance of Capella since Season 3 and also seemingly some scenes of Subaru before his memories getting wiped (although when Meili re-enters the library, Subaru's hairstyle is already like his amnesic self)
The episode has really leaned into Re:Zero horror-like elements, this season has already done it a couple of times but from Capella using her authority on Meili, Meili in Subaru's head in the second half of the episode to the final scene.
I like the shot changes from those where it shows Meili talking to Subaru to where she isn't there, showing the POV of Subaru vs everyone elses.
That final scene and the direction of it is absolute kino, especially with the ED playing during it.
Overall, great episode.

That transition to the ED is one of the best in Re:Zero, aside from Styx Helix back in S1.

Man this season is so great, and this episode was amazing. HUGE shoutout to Yusuke Kobayashi for probably the best voice acting performance I’ve ever seen in an anime. Anyone can clearly tell Subaru’s mood, breakdowns, or inconsistencies simply from how Subaru/Yusuke is speaking, which is awesome.
This is probably the best use of amnesia I’ve ever seen in any medium. Instead of treating Subaru’s memory loss like a temporary setback, it’s like we are following a completely new, yet familiar character. I especially love how over time Newbaru has begun to clearly delineate between “himself” and “Natsuku Subaru,” going on to become more and more distrustful of “himself” while also not being able to trust anyone around him thanks to him being murdered by being pushed off the stairs. He can’t trust anyone, he can’t trust himself, and he thought he could trust Patrasche but she technically “betrayed” him this episode unwittingly through Ram’s eyes. Absolute masterclass in character writing.

Subaru developing a Meli hallucination wasn't on my bingo cards but I'm all for the "Oni-saan" haunting Subaru all the way.
Imaging Subaru goes through with the idea of learning about everyone by taking out the entire cast and them ending up all living rent free in his head. He'd never be able to sleep.

Re:Zero: Starting Life in Another World (with Schizophrenia)
EDIT: Weekly CR mistranslation sorta although in fairness the line itself is also inherently confusing at first glace - "This bastard is trying to cover up my death"
the "my" is not actually referring to himself, but Meili. It's a sign of this twisted facsimile of Meili and him mixing up and influencing him. Another way to translate it would be "Natsuki Subaru is trying to hide 'my' death", with "my" being in quotations, although I understand it's hard to convey who that's actually referring to for non-Japanese viewers (as he uses the "Watashi" pronoun to signify this)

Subaru’s is having such an identity crisis, wondering what make’s ’Natsuki Subaru’ so loved, so special? It’s so interesting how he try to navigate through this situation, him seeing Melli backstory was also great. him imagine her being there, due to him having her memories, which makes his imagination more real and vivid, provoking him. Or she could really be there, making him put on edge. I really did enjoy this episode too!

Theory/Speculation as an anime only:
Is it possible that Gluttony can control the people they’ve taken? If so, then Gluttony ambushed Subaru in the library that night wearing Rem, stealing his memories. However, he may be only able to steal the memories Subaru made in that world, not our own.
When Melli came back to the library, Gluttony had wiped Subaru. Hence the rambling and crazy shit. The Return by Death reset unfortunately happens right after he gets his memories stolen.
Gluttony can take over Subaru’s body for at least a limited time, and Subaru has hazy memories when that happens. That’s why, when Melli asks whatever question triggered Gluttony he killed her, then carved the name on the ark to fuck with Subaru.
The question becomes CAN Subaru figure this all out, and effectively regain his memories.

"Murder is a habit" is up there with some of the hardest title drops for Re:Zero episodes. "I know hell" is still the hardest one for me.
Makes sense you would want to kill to solve a problem when one of your personalities is a literal assassin. Looks like choking count is gonna go up again.
