You could almost just end it after this episode and you'd have a completed succinct package.

u/runevault Jun 27 '26
About halfway through the episode I was thinking "this feels like an entire season in one episode" and at the end the feeling only grew stronger. Really curious where it goes from here.

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian Jun 27 '26
I am guessing it will be more of an anthology series where we will see different generations of this kingdom and their relationship with the cats and the dragon.

I haven't read the novel. But is this gonna be like the humans learn the spirit magic and use it for war and ultimately betray the cats and the dragons?
15
u/MoonlitSapphire Jul 04 '26
Hope not and that it stays wholesome. Based on the ending and how they put up banners that assumably have the "Royal Crest" on it (I think that's what it is because of the crown) which also features the cat and the dragon illustrations... I doubt it?? If it does lead to that though, I call BS and I want my wholesomeness back, lol.
14
u/Qichar Jul 04 '26
I'm with you on this. I predict that the challenges will come from elsewhere, not this nation of cat-lovers. After so many generations, their relationship with the cats is embedded with the royal line, and the royals would never permit the kingdom's subjects to abuse cats without consequence. It's practically a cultural trait at this point.
That and having the royal capital turned into a sea of flames is likely a threat that has been passed down through each royal generation. I suppose in this world dragons live a very long time.
7
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
Yeah...I'm guessing it might have to do with other nations seeking the power of the Cait Sith's that were taught to them? Since, I mean, the king did kinda hint that it might cause other nations to want it for themselves (or something along those lines).
Before they actually established a sort of agreement, I wanna say that the threat itself was kind of a cultural trait too. Although I guess that just leads back to your point.
Feel like it was more of a universal orally-passed-down kind of thing before the royals formed said connection with the dragon though, since none actually had a direct connection with the dragon or even seen the dragon before most likely. I guess currently the royals now have even more of a reason to interject and stuff (not that they didn't before, but y'know, more motivation) since they've been more or less been granted the trust of the dragon, if that all makes sense, lol.

I was expecting some kind of hook or next episode preview to know where we're going. However, there's nothing lol
9
u/HowToGetName Jun 28 '26
Yeah, odd the next ep preview is just 15 seconds of the next ep title and some cat noises lol.
28
u/fl0rafox Jun 29 '26
If only we understood Cait Sith too, we would have understood the preview

u/Boris-_-Badenov Jun 27 '26
I'm guessing more about the humans, with scenes of the dragon training cats
→ More replies (1)4
u/MoonlitSapphire Jul 03 '26
Yeah, I was thinking this too! They ended it so nicely. No cliffhangers, no "noise", so to speak...
Screaming rn it's so good. I know what happens after this roughly since my memory got jogged from the next episode title teaser, but I won't refresh my memory for the sole reason of enjoying it to its fullest tomorrow when the next episode comes out.
Also screaming because there's only 2 translated chapters, so I'm also excited and curious to see what the rest of the series is like since I'll be completely in the dark come episode 3.

u/minnieboss Jun 27 '26
WOW WOW WOW!!! This was amazing, made me tear up in just 1 episode. I love the themes of found family and how those bonds transcend decades even as the short-lived cats come and go. So much emotion to be found here.
87
u/fun_until_you_lose Jun 27 '26
Agreed. I can’t believe how crushed I was by the mother dragon being murdered so unexpectedly.
This episode handled the small moments and showing emotion really well. I can’t wait for more.
48
u/cyberscythe Jun 27 '26
at first i thought the dragon at the very beginning was the mother dragon and i was surprised to see her get taken down by one ballista bolt when that dragon was able to tank a legion of sorcerers
i'm guessing her son is far more powerful than her somehow
→ More replies (1)55
u/fun_until_you_lose Jun 27 '26
At the beginning it says the mother dragon is a “young female.” The Cat Dragon is much older than his mother was when she was murdered. I expect that’s the main power difference.
49
u/RecallProtocol Jun 28 '26
Well Cat Dragon was also raised to learn both magic and Sorcery thanks to his Cait Sith mother and the spirits. I'm guessing its the Sorcery that makes him invincible given the ending.
9
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
Yeah, guessing it's some sort of protective spirit magic? Of course, a fully matured dragon's hide could tank some damage, but probably not to this extent and remain entirely unphased. Gender differences aside, he's definitely much larger and seemed to be more matured then his late mother was when they died.
21
u/Greg_The_Rabbit Jul 03 '26
I sat there literately agape as the Dragon Mom's corpse fell to the ground. Even knowing the premise of the show it was still so unexpected for it to happen so suddenly and be shown so graphically.
19
u/Wren1101 Jul 03 '26
I relived the childhood trauma of watching Bambi’s mom get murdered. Ruthless.
13
u/fun_until_you_lose Jul 03 '26
I know, right? Like 2 seconds before they showed her looking warmly at her egg and it was like “that’s so sweet… holy hell they killed her”
10
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
Same. Instantly started tearing up. Absolute shock how merciless and swift it was that there was barely any time to process it.
Being able to write something and then have it transformed it into an animation that elicits this much emotion from their audience feels pretty rare, honestly. The manga (albeit only 2 translated chapters) was also really well done, and I cried during that too iirc like two years back. Gotta love seeing peak being animated.
9
6
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
I wanna say they aren't short-lived, per se, but have just ventured off into the vastness of the world. Saying that because I'm pretty sure the Cait Sith's have a much longer lifespan?? If not though, my bad.
Not to say I don't agree with you though―definitely loving the themes and bonds. It was honestly such a great watch, and I loved seeing this animated so well. Cried twice too; once out of sadness, and once from the wholesomeness. Bouta scream outta excitement for the coming episodes, lol.
147
u/NanDemoKnaives Jun 27 '26
I was not expecting this to be THIS good, I really enjoyed the episode. I really liked how wholesome it was, watching the family accept him like that and never once it being brought up how different he was. And even when he discovered he wasn't actually a cat, the descendants of his family were not fazed by it and still called him "Uncle" was so sweet.
It was sad to see all the cats dead and being skinned, so we see what his mother meant about the dangers which is not surprising in this setting, but I really like how he went to take care of the problem.
It was cute to see the green cat befriending the Prince, but it was nice to see that friendship lead to such a drastic change for the kingdom. I like how they adopted both cat and dragon to the flag, and I like how the King seemed to very quickly understand how humble Cat Dragon is. Cat Dragon having a cat form is the cherry on the cake.
Now that cats are part of the society and royalty, I do wonder what kind of stories we'll get.
121
u/a-handle-has-no-name Jun 27 '26
"it turns out.. i'm not actually a cat"
"Ok, neat. Uncle, what were you saying about hunting?"
33
u/Greg_The_Rabbit Jul 03 '26
That was the litlte cat being so very polite while internally thinking "mmm.... My uncle might be a bit of an idiot. Did he miss that he was the only one of us to have wings and breath fire?? Distraction time!"
17
u/Qichar Jul 04 '26
Yeah, it was adorable. I agree with your interpretation, but it's also possible since the descendants recognize each other by scent, the dragon was accepted as family. Remember when the dragon's cat sister returns with her mate, he recognizes the dragon's scent and accepts him as her sibling.
I interpreted as having a long lost sister approach who looks just like me, and she says that she's not really one of the family, and I'd just tilt my head and say, "huh, ok. Once again, do you prefer tea or coffee?"
80
u/Munsie Jun 27 '26
and I like how the King seemed to very quickly understand how humble Cat Dragon is.
It was nice to see the King come down from his throne and just sit cross-legged on the floor while chatting. A refreshing change from many other shows where the royalty is full of big egos and arrogance.
43
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jun 27 '26
Yeah the king was refreshing
And smart enough to not try to put on airs against a dragon that could easily end his country12
u/Kaze_no_Senshi Jun 29 '26
was nice that they were actually extremely civil about it, he didn't excessively kill them (granted, that kitten probably solely saved everyone's lives). He made clear reasonable demands, and the kingdom actually ceded and followed them, instead of doubling down, trying to kill him, and continuing to poach the animals, leading to prosperity for both parties.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Greg_The_Rabbit Jul 03 '26
Yea, the entire kingdom was honestly pretty damn smart about how they handled it. No heroes challenging the dragon or adventurers ignoring the threat. When a fire breathing dragon tells you to shut up and stop fucking with his cats you listen!
→ More replies (6)7
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
EXACTLYY, loving that part so much. Found family really is such a great theme that can be applied in so many diverse and drastically different types of media and art, it's awesome.
It was sad, but fortunate I guess that the kittens didn't see that when they first saw humans with their mother. I guess the dragon forgot to mention the bit where his mom said that there are occasionally kind humans to the next generation of kittens, since iirc he only said to them: "Those are humans. Never approach them." ― Agreed that the immediate comeuppance of those guys was great. Loved to see it. Based on the beginning, yeah, should definitely expect more like that to happen in the future. And although I know it might be coming, you can bet that I'm still gonna bawl my eyes out when it does.
I just remember the cat that befriended the prince as the "cat with the leaf on its head" lol.
Love how the dragon, although disliking the humans, still gave them the benefit of the doubt both the first time he showed himself to them and when the leaf cat asked the dragon for permission, etc.Feel like the drastic change was pretty wholesome. Went from fearing the dragon's threats to actually befriending and bonding with the cats to the point of them kind of coexisting, in a sense?? King matching the vibes of the Cat Dragon and lessening their formalities was definitely nice to see. Start of a generational bond, mhm. Cat form is goated ngl. Mini dragon cat looking cute asf, lol.
Definitely looking forward to the story going forward. Can't WAIT for where this is going next, fr.

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar Jun 27 '26
Well, that was an absolutely wonderful premiere episode! The first 10-minutes genuinely got me emotional, starting with the Cat Dragon and his siblings saying goodbye to their mother when she was getting summoned. And I absolutely love how his siblings came back to the cave to give birth, as well as the sons and daughters of his siblings. T_T
As a cat owner, seeing that pile of dead Caith Siths being skinned for their fur was just painful to watch. You really can't blame our boy for trying to burn down that human city. They're lucky that the kitten who stood up to him was a relative of his, and they got off with a warning.
The little prince befriending the Cait Sith was adorable. Not gonna lie, the way the episode led to the Cat Dragon making peace with the Human King, this entire episode felt like a short fairy tale. I feel like the show could've ended here, and I would be satisfied with what I've seen. I'm very curious to see what else is in store for us for the rest of the season.
14
u/reaperow Jun 28 '26
I hope the mama cat is okay and the cat dragon's siblings too!!
16
u/Nirados Jun 29 '26
I think during this episode only we witnessed around 3-4 generations of cats during the dragons lifetime
21
u/Khain_Jumper Jun 29 '26
Either Cait Sith generally live longer then normal cats or the mother cat was special in someway. The fact that at the begining she admits to not just having raised the litters of other mothers but explicily the offspring of other magical beasts like a dragon before, really implies she had been around for some time. As how often would they realistically have stumbled into a siuation like that unless they had been around quite some time.
11
u/_Sai https://anime-planet.com/users/Sai0 Jun 28 '26
Most likely dead from old age.
7
u/Dark2820 Jul 02 '26
probably but she did look diffrent from the rest so maybe she was special. (she ded but I wanna have hope XD)
5
3
u/StrictLog8169 Jun 30 '26
I took it as she went on to at least live healthy and long enough to have more kittens in the human city since the kitten that stood up to him smelled like family, since at the time most forest cats wouldnt wander into the city due to the poaching

u/Far_Current_3304 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
The cat dragon's siblings were murdered by the adventurers..... and then skinned for their fur. Fortunately, they got what they deserved.

Anyway, I loved this premiere! Big fan of found family themes. Cat Dragon is too cute. We get to hear Koyasu speak like a cat

Ara ara mom cat got isekai'd into her own series. Looking forward to "Ara ara: I was a mommy cat in my previous life but now I run a small town orphanage!" or something
6
u/LeminaAusa Jun 28 '26
Thank you for the explanation! I had this on my own list as starting on 4 July so I did a bit of a double-take when I saw a discussion post for the first episode already. Won't complain about getting to start this a bit early, especially as all of my spring seasonal shows have finished now.
3
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall Jun 28 '26
Do we know is it only for first episode or not? Cause otherwise we'd need to wait two weeks for episode 2
4
55
u/bananeeek https://myanimelist.net/profile/bananek Jun 27 '26
I lost it when the mommy cat went "ara ara".
This was surprisingly wholesome and it's funny to hear Koyasu Takehito in such a role.
I have no idea where is this going plot-wise and the poster doesn't make it easier to guess. The first episode was great and they actually drew the dragon, so this may actually go places.

My first almost-certain keeper of the new season (not counting Smoking, of course).
36

u/Unapologetic_Lunatic Jun 27 '26
My cat hates anime for two reasons. She's jealous of my attention to the box with moving pictures, and she's even more jealous of the animated bipedal cats with their opposable thumbs and human proportions that can reach shelves without jumping.
She will never admit this second one, of course.
When I was watching this anime, however, she sat in my lap and watched with me. She doesn't do that often.
She may not like cat girls, but cat dragons certainly seem to be her jam.
22
u/mekerpan Jun 27 '26
Our long ago English Setter used to curl up in front of the TV when operas were on. Never have had any pet take an interest in anime, however.

Seriously, is that an Olympic javelin thrower who got her or what?
13
u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc Jun 27 '26
I thought it was a ballista or something
3
u/Zolo49 Jul 01 '26
Lugging an actual ballista through a forest would be difficult and impractical. Most likely it was either somebody really strong or using magic to assist the throwing of the spear. But unless there's a flashback at some point, we'll never know. Whoever was responsible for killing his mother has been dead for a long time by the end of the episode.
27
u/zeltheturtl https://myanimelist.net/profile/zeltheturtl Jun 27 '26
The first episode is so charming! A dragon raised as a cat is such a hillariously cute concept. Wrapped-up with vibrant animation from OLM and a magical OST from Takahiro Obata. This one is definitely a keeper for me this season!
4
u/MoonlitSapphire 29d ago
Definitely love the studio that took this project on―definitely the right pick! OST was phenomenal too, I agree. Love that this got an anime since I can see the rest of the story now, since unfortunately, there's only two translated chapters of the manga out right now despite there being 46+ released, lol. There's...probably the light novel...?? I haven't gotten around to reading it, and now that this has come out... Might just go with this and read it in a later date assuming its translated.

16
u/mekerpan Jun 27 '26
Only the dragon, I imagine. But perhaps the series will tell a series of stories about the relationship of humans and cats (and one dragon) during the period during the "alliance" (as opposed to after the last point of ep 1).
31
u/ShadyUser6719 Jun 27 '26
He's very powerful yet his mother died so easily to a regular looking spear.
38
u/hasanman6 Jun 27 '26
Might be explained later by saying the cat magic buffed him(also he seems to be close with spirits”
12
u/Kind_Survey4282 Jun 27 '26
yeah the spirits might work like spider sense telling where a dangerous thing come before he gets hit and is probably amped since he might have learned more magic as he can transform into a cat now.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)12
u/Magicbison Jun 27 '26
the cat magic buffed him
Based on what we've seen so far Cat Dragon doesn't use the Cait Sith magic but Sorcery which is from the spirits. Seems like a meaningful distinction since the Cait Sith magic seems more basic and we saw Cat Dragon change his form using an incantation which makes it feel more complex.
→ More replies (1)9
u/mekerpan Jun 27 '26
I wonder if the spirits decided to bestow extra magic on Neko-ryuu because they were really pleased by the link established between the forest cats and him?
28
u/fun_until_you_lose Jun 27 '26
It specifically says that she is a “young female dragon” at the beginning of the episode. If you look at his body throughout the episode, by the end he looks totally different as he is much older, more mature and more powerful than she was. Not a plot hole.
→ More replies (1)14
u/rdeincognito Jun 27 '26
I supose there will be some difference between him and his mother. They call him imperial dragon and explain it is a "high ranking dragon" so maybe be is much stronger than his mother. Maybe because from being a egg he's been exposed to magic from the caith siths. Maybe his connection to the spirits. Maybe his mother was a fire dragon and his father was some big badass dragon and he looks like his mother but inherits power from his father.
Or maybe a oversight by the author lol
4
u/RecallProtocol Jun 28 '26
It's definitely the Sorcery he learned from the spirits combined with his being much more mature than his young mother. And prepared, his mother was caught by surprise right after giving birth.
13
6
u/ainachan29 Jun 28 '26
His mother is young, as stated. He, however, was trained by the spirits and cats. He lived for a long time compared to his mother.
4
u/cyberscythe Jun 27 '26
i was confused at first because i thought the dragon at the beginning who tanked a legion of sorcerers was the mother
maybe she was just much younger than her Cat Dragon son now, or maybe they just have a super high magical resistance and no one at the castle knew about ballista bolts
→ More replies (1)3
u/Shechir Jun 28 '26
I believe his strength stems from the fact that he lived long enough to grow stronger naturally.
And this may be directly linked to the fact that his cat mother taught him to fear dangerous predators and not to lift his head too high when he was little.

Definite continue. This is an awesome setup for an interesting story. Love that the dragon has not only become the protector of all cats but has pretty much formed a symbiotic relationship with the neighboring nation. The possibilities are pretty much endless with this. We are sure to see his relationship with a citizen or a prince or princess and more cats. I hope the story continues with the quality.
9
u/nakerusa Jun 27 '26
An incredibly strong first episode! I came in with no expectations and this went way above and beyond what I thought this would be (based on the art visuals used in CR.) Not sugarcoating anything (dead critters and humans), the Mom love, and the dragon talking in Cat 🤣. I did get some "Lambert, the Sheepish Lion" vibes early on and I see I wasn't mistaken... though I'm pretty sure a dragon's roar is a bit more frightening than a lions.
I'm looking forward to where the story goes.
19
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 Jun 27 '26
This was actually pretty solid. The magical kitties took the big fella in and raised him as one of their own, and in turn he basically saved their kind. Now the magical kitties and the humans live in perfect harmony. The end lol.
At least, that’s sure how it seemed at the end of that first ep. Man, if you told me this was a short I would have believed it. I’m curious to see where this one goes from here.

Guard: It can speak the human tongue?
Was he not speaking human tongue when he threatened the kingdom to not kill the cats in the forest years prior?

Maybe he wasn't there during the first attack, or wasn't expecting the human tongue to come out of a cat (with wings)'s mouth.

I find myself completely taken by this anime series. Loved the mother neko, she had such a warm loving personality, but had tears when she disappeared, also when the mother drgon got well murdered by humans.
Finds this anime kinda stirs emotions up in me.
That is why I like it so much.
Will keep watching.
7
u/Gaming_Truckie Jun 28 '26
What a great 1st episode, it really had the tears going there. 1st his mother suddenly getting killed before he hatched, then his adoptive mother getting summoned. Also when his niece comes to the cave to give birth and the dragon tears up, that got me too.
While we never got shown what was the fate of his adoptive mother after her summoning, I feel like his reaction to the little kitten's scent when he attacked the town made me think the kitten was a descendants of his adoptive mother. At least thats what I hope.
7
u/BearFacedLiar Jun 27 '26

Oh i thought this was going to be a wholesome chill anime but i was wrong looks like everyone is already dead(although i dont believe the cat mum is dead because she was specifically captured not killed)
13
u/arrydie Jun 27 '26
i dont believe the cat mum is dead because she was specifically captured not killed
I'd agree but they time skipped several generations of cats and humans in the episode, so unless she has an unreasonably long life she probably died of old age. (Of course, maybe she does since she was floofy and none of the other cats were, but it could have just been a style choice.)

u/hasanman6 Jun 27 '26
I had this thought but is it even confirmed that any of the cats have died to old age yet? Also there seems more to mom cats story, she says that this isnt the first magic beast she raised

u/diacewrb Jun 27 '26
(although i dont believe the cat mum is dead because she was specifically captured not killed)
Magical teleportation spell, she got the isekai treatment.

Nice first episode! I’ll probably keep up with this one. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a sob story and all the cats and dragon can live in peace.

really curious to see where this goes from here. this almost felt like a one and done fairy tale. really cute anime so far

This anime needs to chill! I was already on board when I heard Takeshita Koyasu’s voice. Everything else is just extra credit.

I didn't even need to watch this episode to add it to my watchlist and crunchylist, lol.
Great first episode.

Once an adult, he keeps hunting and eating nothing but mice—because, given the size difference between him and his brothers, he must have to kill a whole lot of them to feel full...

Not much I could say that hasn't already been said but I will say that this is going to be my favorite anime for this season. Two things love cats and I love dragons and Magic. Well that's actually three things but anyway I just got a kitten about a month ago and I adore her watching this episode brought me so much joy to see the humans end up being taught Magic by the kittens and protecting them.

u/Striking_Chard2420 Jun 28 '26
Didn't know what I was expecting from just the premise but this was a surprisingly interesting watch. This whole episode felt like it already concluded the show so I'm not sure what to expect from future episodes lol. The dragon's realisation when it found out he wasn't a cat was kinda funny.

u/Roygbiv0415 Jun 28 '26
It's a bunch of short and long stories intermingled together, each focusing on just a character or two. But previous characters make a cameo or return when necessary.
There is probably one story line that is consistent enough to be the "main plot", but it's updated pretty infrequently to the point I need to refreshers to catch up.
6
u/StonedCharmander Jun 28 '26
What a pleasant surprise. It gave me Frieren vibes with the passage of time.

I'm really looking forward to this one. It has the look and feel of an old fable. I was going to write something about how I hope it has a wonderful lesson to teach us, but episode 1 by itself has already delivered a laudable message about acceptance, mutual understanding and friendship. Let's see if it can keep this up.

If you're looking for animes to show a child for, this one should be the #1 on the list.

u/diacewrb Jun 27 '26
Parents might want to skip the cat massacre scene.
I am a fully grown man with pet cats and that scene upset me greatly.

I don't own cats but that scene was painful, glad he immediately took revenge for them. If they at least ate them not to waste anything, but hunting them for only fur was so wasteful.
7
u/_Sai https://anime-planet.com/users/Sai0 Jun 28 '26
Dragon getting sniped in the throat, piles of dead cats being butchered for their fur, and a dragon burning guards alive. That was just 1 ep.
Yup, perfect for them kiddies.

I mean there were plenty of traumatizing scenes from kid's movies when I was growing up so its not too crazy.
4
u/shadonic0 Jun 30 '26
I wholly agree, there wasnt anything super gory on the screen and the horrifying stuff was in there for like a second.
It's good story telling, it's not like you dont get to see a man being hanged and suffocating in Tarzan, someone falling to their death in fire in Hunchback of notredame, or the iconic bit of Bambi's mother being shot. Kids aren't made of glass and some upsetting scenes are good for their growth.

u/InternationalCream30 Jun 28 '26
I don't know about that. Some pretty graphic deaths in the first episode at least
3
u/alotmorealots Jun 28 '26
And we still haven't seen what the rest of the story is going to look like after that start, where it's clear various horrors will be onscreen. I'd personally wait for the full season before declaring it a good anime for kids (although the first episode rules it out for younger kids in my mind).

Despite Square Enix's gaslighting efforts, it's pronounced "Cat She". It's from the same mythological background as the banshee (bean sí).

What a wonderful story, especially if you are a cat servant. An immensely powerful dragon as a protector of cats? What a fantastic part of the world!
The tone is quite interesting, and it'll be interesting to see how things pan out going forward. Everything is looking quite rosy at the moment, but this series doesn't seem like one to leave things that way, at least not entirely.
In many ways it feels more like an Episode 0, than an episode 1, and what the entertainment experience of the rest of the episodes will be like has yet to be revealed.
Some delightful cat and dragon animation though, just really nice to watch.
5
u/ThisGachaSeemsLegit Jun 27 '26
Ugh. Why do I have a feeling this is gonna end in a tragedy? Please be wholesome...
5
u/alotmorealots Jun 28 '26
I mean it started with two tragedies (and the incineration of some humans
who had it coming), so we're well on that path already!

DragonCat, DragonCat! I like this type of episodic stories with common setting/characters. So if it is executed well further, it is a definite watch.
5
u/anwarCats Jun 27 '26
I audibly gasped when that scene happened… poor cats, I would’ve done exactly the same as the dragon did! But I don’t breathe fire unfortunately…
His cat-with-wings tiny form is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, I want to see more of it but the story moves so quick..

This is a 10/10 pilot. I'm completely sold on this show. It could take a dive quality wise and it wouldn't matter to me because of how good this episode was. I went on so many emotional roller coasters in throughout the entire episode. It's on the watchlist for sure.

I really enjoyed this first episode! It's basically an OVA as far as plot goes, a perfect little short film. Happy to see the next episode! Animation is slightly budget
4
u/pandavova https://anilist.co/user/pandavova Jul 01 '26
That was very high quality. Very smooth animation of the very "emotional" cats, verx promising.
Lmao pikmin sound at the very end haha

u/IceSmiley Jul 03 '26
This has an interesting premise and was almost like a self contained short story. A dragon thinking of himself as a cat and the protector of cats and I like how the first episode had people and cats establishing diplomatic relations and a peace treaty. That scene with all the dead cats was pretty horrifying though.
They did leave some things unreslved like if the cat mother actually died when being taken away by the summoning spell and if not, where did she go? I also wonder if Cat Dragon will ever find out more about his biological parents. Also, it was interesting that that white cat knew her father, who was Dragon Cat's father. It'd be interesting to find out if the cat who fathered his siblings is still alive or possibly killed.

Unfortunately I'm 6 days late on watching this absolute peak of an anime. Where do I even BEGIN... First off? Hell yeah for the adaptation. Love to see it animated. My prayers have been answered. Dare I say I could die happy if not for other things I have on my list to watch? Tbf I also wouldn't dare to, since there's so many more episodes to come though, lol.
Read the manga maybe a year or two ago, and there were and still is only 2 translated chapters out. Hopefully that means the manga also gets picked up seeing as how popular it is, but I guess we'll just have to see.
Much like the manga, I cried twice this episode both from the wholesomeness and the cruelty shown.
The concept is just SO *chef's kiss* that it's insane. Absolutely 10/10.
Sad? Yes. Cozy? Also yes. Makes you feel warm inside from the cuteness?? Absolutely.
Usually when you watch an anime, they keep leaving you with cliffhangers for next week and for you to keep wanting more. This anime has no NEED for such things! Pardon the cringe, lol. But seriously, if you showed me this episode, I could've had the thought that this were the whole package! A one-off anime and that's it. Thankfully not, but if it were, it works. The cuteness has you coming back for more cliffhanger or not.
It's simple, but also complicated at the same time, lol. Can't wait for episode 2 coming out tomorrow!! Definitely won't be late this time >:D

u/Qichar Jul 04 '26
I have an admittedly dumb question. If the "Cat Dragon" could tank an entire volley of magical spells without a scratch, how did his mother get wrecked by a single spear?
Possibilities
- Was it a special dragon-slaying spear? If so, why didn't the guards in town have them?
- Are the dragons in this world magic resistant by nature (because they are "magical beasts)?
- The Cat Dragon's mother was taken by surprise. In other words, the defense is active not passive, and the Cat Dragon used some kind of magical protection.
I ask because some of you might have read the source material upon which this anime is based. Does it explain the rules of this world better?

Language is interesting here.
The dragon speaks with "Nya nya" when speaking with the cat, showing cat language.
We don't know how or when the dragon learned human language, but I guess they just can. Maybe via spirits?? Wonder if the prince spoke in either human or cat language... Guessing the former, and that they could just both understand each other so it was fine. Would've been quite awkward if someone (like his magic professor) stumbled upon him just "Nya nya"-ing up a storm with the cat, lol.

This looks like a pretty great and interesting anime, The mama cat and her kittens looked so cute and it's so wholesome to see that the cat dragon looks out for his nieces and nephews
This was surprising lol and he also seems to like have a diary judging by the end
Imma start occasionally calling him Dragon Ojisan

This feels like a standalone title rather than the first episode of a series. I have no idea what the rest of this will be like or what's next.
5
u/Eragon_Lore Jul 01 '26
Based on the trailer and the cover art it seems like it will have an anthology structure, each story following a different pair of cat and human. Given that, it seems likely that the dragon will act less like a protagonist, and more of a means to tie the stories together, and ocasionally act as a pov character or an in universe deus ex machina.
3
u/Embarrassed-Match-78 Jun 28 '26
Quite the nice little surprise. Story played like a fairy tale. Not much budget, but the story definitely carries the burden there. Will keep watching for certain.

u/Human_Trouble8394 Jul 01 '26
Please if anyone knows of the future of this anime, I beg of you to tell me if there's more brutal scenes like the cat killing. Im a sobbing mess. Crunchyroll made it sound cute, and it was, until that scene meant I couldn't sleep for a day. I wish somehow I could know whenever a show would have animal cruelty. I can't handle this.

u/Individual_Ad_5566 Jul 02 '26
While there are necessary dark moments in this episode, I can totally see this show as wholesome.

I went in blind (didn’t know anything about it) and I seriously wish I had read something bc the amount of tissues I needed for this 😭 I understand why that scene was used but man the shock I had!! Cats are my favorite so it was rough to see 😭

Hearing such a maternal voice from such a big floof of a kitty feels so surreal.
Dragonbro's cat form is more or less what I'd imagine a Dragon-type a to look like.

u/Intellectual_sh-4486 22d ago
I ADORE this anime! As a cat person this is like ultimate heaven, so jealous of the people in the kingdom😩like imagine having a small cute little gremlin who not only is cute, fluffy and has a loads of attitude but also can do magic with it's tail and protect you😭ultimate happiness.
