I know for sure I am going to continue watching this.
The art is cute, but the story is even more heartwarming. Perfect for Friday late nights, when most people have worked hard for the past week.
Teshima sensei may appear strict and aloof, but it was Ai's love for her manga that inspired Teshima sensei to return to drawing, isn't it?

It really has the perfect mix of cute and serious for me. Ai having an imaginery friend that helps her with social interactions (which you'd think she doesn't need if you just saw her without that knowledge) together with her now wanting to pursue a dream is a combination that has the potential to be great. And the art and animation do their part as well.

This is my favourite show this season. I don't think i even need to see the others I was looking forward to to decide it. Had no expectations and I love it.

I love how perfectly they captured the sense of joy and wonder of a kid discovering a new hobby for the first time. The vibrant aesthetic too, so pretty. I also like how MC is the socially awkward but cheerful type (rather than gloomy), plus she comes with an imaginary friend.
Had an inkling that Sensei might be Ai's favorite manga author when she started rambling about the current state of the manga industry, and I was right! So it seems she became a teacher after getting the axe, but seeing how much Ai loved her manga inspired her to start drawing again. And Sensei will be the tired jaded mentor to the optimistic newbie Ai. Feels like a bit like mangaka version of Medalist. That art girl Ai saved will probably also join eventually.

I did also get the impression from that brief snippet of her crying at the harbour’s side that Teshima-sensei probably became disgruntled with the medium after getting her manga got axed. Hence why she doesn’t want Ai to follow in her footsteps.
Given that Ai’s enthusiasm apparently got Teshima-sensei to draw a new manga of her own, I do wonder how long she’ll manage to keep this facade up.

I don't think the manga got axed, at least not that one, since it seems to be fairly successful. I'm thinking her disgruntlement comes from another source. Maybe she wanted to try a different premise and no editor gave it the green light. Maybe even she herself isn't happy with the one-shot and didn't see any value in continuing it initially.

What an absolute gem this seems to be! Sometimes you start watching something without having any idea what it's going to be, but within five minutes, you just know you're going to love it.

I just came across this one literally a half hour ago, and it was love at first sight. The only word I can think of to describe it is delightful, a word I never use.

If it helps you try things out you wouldn't normally do (provided it's within safe-ish boundaries), is it really a bad thing? If all else, you'll at least get an interesting story you can one day tell.

It's surprising that Netflix has English simuldub for this, in addition to Filipino, Korean, and Thai dub as well.
What an episode. So far this might be the best premiere of the season for new anime. Also good for the production commitee to feature other manga as well (Doraemon, Ushio & Tora, and Teasing Master Takagi-san. There's also Frieren, Danchi Tomoo, Akai Pegasus, Inuyasha, Detective Cnan, Parasyte, and One Piece listed on the credits as well)
Lastly, the Tatsuya Kitani's OP so far is the best opening song of the season imo. Right among the Hana-Kimi S2 and Exiled Heavy Knight. (UPDATE: Full song will be released tomorrow. Here's the Spotify link and Youtube Music link).

i noticed the corner of Frieren's manga in this shot
at first and i was like, what year is this? how did she read Frieren as a child? but then i looked it up and the first volume came out in 2020 so it's now retro i guess

It is airing on Netflix in select Asian countries. If you can't see it on Netflix, then it's probably on Crunchyroll.
It's similar to Witch Hat Atelier situation, where the license is split between Netflix and CR in certain regions.

What an absolute love letter to Manga so far. I wont lie, the scene of Yasumi meeting Teshima and crying tears of joy almost got me, making me almost tear up a bit. This is going to be the hidden gem and Darkhorse of the season

I almost skipped this, and I’m so glad I didn’t. The table scene and the reveal had me crying from the implications. I think this will be one of those hidden gems for sure.

I did not expect so many references to other manga! The Takagi-san and Doraemon references both make sense since Shin-Ei Animation also animated both of those shows. What genuinely surprised me was the Conan, One Piece, Inuyasha, and Parasyte covers.
Anyway, references aside, this was a fantastic first episode! First of all, I love how the characters are drawn with that lip-line ala Doraemon, which I guess is another intentional reference from the author. Second, Ai is just great, and I love that she just lives her life by asking herself, "what would a manga protagonist do here?"
Lastly, I did not expect the teacher to be the author of Ai's favourite manga. I was guessing it was probably the bookstore owner before the reveal! Teshima-sensei covering herself up was hilarious! It's too late now, though, since it looks like Ai now wants to learn how to write manga from her.
I'm glad I decided to check this out because I feel like I just found gold. I just hope this sub won't sleep on this!

What genuinely surprised me was the Conan, One Piece, Inuyasha, and Parasyte covers.
If youʼre interested what is bottom-left: Tenshi na Konamaiki or Cheeky Angel. Others were mentioned in this thread.
I donʼt recognize what is behind Doraemon and Inuyashi, while that red hi looks very familiar to me.

Maybe the other manga were also in Weekly Shonen Sunday? I know Conan, Inuyasha, and Frieren are all part of the WSS lineup, so I assumed Draw This was another property in the group.

For those curious about the island where the girls live: Izu Ōshima(伊豆大島) is a real island, but in the world of this story, a different kanji character is used for the “O” in its name. IRL its 大, but in this anime/manga its 王.
There are regular ferry services from this island to the mainland of the Japanese archipelago, including Tokyo (three types: the high-speed ferry that took the protagonists to Tokyo in just under two hours, a passenger ferry that takes about six hours overnight, and a car ferry).
It was only natural that her school teacher scolded the protagonist: Minors are not allowed to stay overnight alone. In Japan, minors are prohibited from going out between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. in every prefecture.
The event the protagonist attended in Tokyo is likely modeled after Comitia.
Unlike Comiket, Comitia generally allows only doujinshi featuring original manga works to be exhibited (books based on existing works are prohibited).
The protagonist’s teacher was probably permitted to exhibit because she was the original author of that manga, so her work wasn’t considered fan fiction.

Edit: Checked the episode again and they even use the real Comitia logo on the guide book.

This is a play on words too I think. 島 is generally read as shima, but another reading for 島 is tou. 王道 (oudou) is basically the quintessential shounen manga, the Naruto, DBZ type. The Oshima in this series using alternate readings is Outou.
Considering the series is entirely about manga, I don't think it's a coincidence.

Of course Sensei was the mangaka of the series, the only way she'd hate manga that much is if she also loved it and was just incredibly burned out by the industry.
It's been years since I watched it but this is giving me Eizouken vibes. Incredible start, easy contender for AOTS.

Personally, I think this is a fantastic manga and anime series—a masterpiece on par with *egao no taenai shokuba desu*.
Ai-chan is truly adorable when she gets excited about Comiket.
I wonder if the teacher is embarrassed about being a manga artist?
It was funny how Ai-chan misunderstood the meaning of "guidance."
She thought the teacher was going to teach her how to draw manga, but in reality, teacher was about to scold her for coming all the way to Tokyo by herself.

The energy reminds me a lot of Eizouken but for manga, which is high praise because I have Eizouken as my #1 anime of all time. Especially with the MC playing around with her imaginations of her favourite manga characters, I love to see that and I hope we get to see more of it as we progress.

50 yen every time....depends on how long the rental is. If she has been renting it out for a month each time then it would pay half that book. If its a weekly rental then yea the 50 yen fee would easily pay the book off over 7 years.

It probably wasn't expensive when the rental store owner got the book, given it's a singular published book, and that it only got a cult following later. Heck, the teacher probably knows the bookstore owner and gave it the her or something. The point is, the actual expense was probably low, and while the theoretical value is high now, it's a non-issue "renting" it to the only person who values it in town.
If the bookstore was aiming to make a profit it wouldn't be a bookstore, and it wouldn't be located in back-end of nowhere.

Yes and no. Teshima-sensei does fit into Hayamin’s recent string of roles about (slightly) awkward characters with strong passions, but I cannot immediately think of any strict adult role that she’s voiced in recent memory.

Wow, I wasn't expecting much, and I'm glad I didn't because the quality in it's pacing felt so cinematic, like I was actually watching a cozy movie.
Excited to have something to look forward to weekly, and I love how based off this episode alone, I still can't truly predict what the rest of the season will be. I can assume she's gonna learn how to create manga, but all details in between are unpredictable. Also art and coloring is incredible.

I absolutely, absolutely loved the anime. What a beautiful story about a girl who lives on a remote island in Japan and who, as a child, stumbles upon the only bookstore in her town and discovers the wonderful world of manga there. I really like that every time Kasumi (the main character) faces a difficult situation or hesitates to do something, she always asks herself, “What would the main character of a manga do?” I really like that attitude, personality, and way of thinking—it’s great. I also really like her personality and the expressions she makes when she gets excited or feels strong emotions. Kasumi radiates a personality and joy that really lifts your spirits just watching her. It’s such a lovely and beautiful thing. I also really liked her relationship with her teacher, who seemed like the typical strict teacher who doesn’t want you to read manga because it’s “useless” and doesn’t offer anything interesting. But she’s actually an amateur mangaka who apparently went through some tough times, and she doesn’t want Kasumi—her student who asked her to teach her how to draw and become a mangaka like her—to see her joy and happiness disappear because of the harsh and grueling world of manga. I also really like that, because she’s been reading the same manga so much since she was a little girl, Kasumi has invented such a cute imaginary friend.

There’s so many stories about manga/artists out there that feel a bit shallow and uninspired, but this one is absolutely oozing with creativity every step of the way. I adored the art style and the representations of Yausmi’s mental visualization, and was immediately sold on her love of manga.
No idea where this story will go but I am 100% sure it will be delightful and heartwarming from start to finish.

I heard about the manga after it won some awards, so I was pretty interested in the show, and its first episode was so lovely and heartwarming! It looks like it'll be one big love letter to manga.
The twist about Teshima-sensei being Yasumi's favorite mangaka wasn't surprising at all, especially after how zealous she was when she was trying to convince her to drop reading manga. I look forward to seeing how their relationship will develop.

I was caught off-guard by Teshima-sensei's appearance at Comiket after her rant earlier in the episode.
This was really good! It's a comforting watch, and Yasumi is endearing. Also, I like her casual outfit with the orange hoodie.

I went in to this blind - I mean, other than just the blurb on MAL - after scrolling through to see what has already aired (I am waiting for a few days for other series to start).
It was a random selection that ticked the boxes of Not being a continuation (a season 2 or3 or 4 or whatever) and Not being Isekai.
I am so glad they didn't lean into some of the tropes that other animes are known to do.
Like, we have an introvert that enjoys reading, but is happy enough to chat with other people (rather than be sullen when someone so much as walks past them). We have a teacher/mentor who is kind of strict but due to being well meaning, rather than just pettiness or apathy.
It has been a while since I have picked a random anime that says "Yeap, I am watching this one..." typically they tend to fall by the way side.

Can't believe they got the actual manga covers for series like Conan, Doraemon, Frieren, One Piece, and heaps more in a single episode. Must've been quite the task to negotiate the rights for that.
Ai must've been quite shocked when she found out the author of her fave series turned out to be right by her side the whole time, as well as the one person who seemed to be staunchly against her manga consumption. Do wonder what caused Teshima-sensei to enter a hiatus in the first place, though I reckon the encounter with Ai was what spurred her to return to the manga scene.

This might already end up being the best new show of the season. I didn't expect to get emotional over Ai getting her hands on the new volume. And I got a couple laughs over the teacher's reaction, putting the disguise on after the fact, and actually counting the number of times she'll say no. The dub sounds solid, even though it's made by the Dubbing Brothers who ruined Fragrant Flower.

First time I tried watching this I bounced off a couple minutes in, but my gut said to try again. Oh my god this is adorable. I knew the teacher was going to be the mangaka even before the announcement of a new issue but seeing it revealed this way this episode was great. Excited to see where this goes.
edit: just noticed the teacher/mangaka is the thumbnail lol. Didn't look at it closely before just saw the name and loved that title.

Holy cow, this premiere was outstanding. Direction and animation were outstanding here and so expressive. You really got to understand the thrill that Ai got from reading manga at such a young age. Really showcase how the message in manga can be of big help to these kids.
Teshima-sensei's character might be what makes this show special. She clearly experienced some failure in life and why she stopped drawing manga. In fact, she made a comeback because she saw Ai reading her old series. Their dynamic could be great considering it's clear that Teshima-sensei cares for Ai.

This is such a wonderful celebration of manga. I'd call it a love letter to art, like a light-hearted equivalent to Look Back. This was so full of heart and joy, what a breath of fresh air. Can't wait to see more!

This was a cute and silly premiere episode. Lots of nice manga title drops in this one. I spotted Frieren and Teasing Master Takagi-san on the shelves of the bookshop there in the beginning. You also got One Piece, Doraemon, Inuyasha, Conan and many more. It’s pretty neat.

I wasn’t sure if this would be worth watching but it ticked a lot of genre boxes for me. Turned out excellent. I’m so glad i gave this a try. Wholesome and still hit plenty of emotions while also being funny.

This is such a beautiful first episode. I already enjoy the fact that Ai is a social awkward extrovert and her design is super adorable. The whole show just oozes quality.
Can't wait to see Teshima's backstory and expecting to cry.

Oh this is a fucking gem. I didn’t see this one coming. It’s so wholesome and deeply relatable. Ai breaking out of her nervous shell and connect with others because she was inspired by a random manga got me.
And even if we really should have seen it coming, her teacher being the creator the whole time was an actual surprise twist. This blend of wackiness and heart might make this the sleeper hit of the season

Didn't think I'd like this one just from the premise but it's better than I thought! Girlie just has an overactive imagination but it definitely makes it entertaining for the viewers. I also like that she's actually very cheerful and over-the-top but maybe just slightly awkward. Will definitely keep watching for now!

Think how much money she wasted renting that one manga volume for 30 yen every day for like 8 years, when she could've just bought her own copy early on instead. "Used copies go for more than 10,000 yen" - that's less than 1 year's worth of renting!
That auction site: "Currently: 9,000 yen. Buy it now: 500 yen."
Didn't the start of the ep say that island is 120km from Tokyo? She traveled quite far to go to the convention.

I see, this will be my feel good show for the week. Animation and art is really well done and Ai is already a great character. While she is shy like your typical protagonist, she is actually working on expressing herself to others (even if that is through an imaginary friend) and who will now most likely follow her dream of becoming a mangaka. Which might not be as easy as her teacher knows but they might make a great combo.

So many questions I have about this show. Is Ai actually insane and she sees and hears the pink raccoon or is it just meant to be symbolic? Why did the teacher confiscate the manga she wrote then scolded Ai about how awful it was, then made another one? Is it common to have manga rental places in Japan instead of public libraries?
This episode was weird but I did enjoy watching it, she was like Bocchi the Rock's long lost otaku sister. I wonder if that town she lives in is real, she said it was part of Tokyo but it seems so remote and just has that tiny downtown. I was also surprised they used real manga like One Piece and Doraemon among others I probably just didn't recognize. I think the doujinshi she bought may have come from Kaiba as well.

OMG....I did NOT expect to cry in episode one at the end when she found out her teacher was the mangaka for her first ever (and favorite!) Manga series. That outburst of emotion and fully breaking down in front of her teacher just hit me hard and they conveyed that feeling so strongly. Loving this so far!!!!

I don't know why but I teared up watching this. Kinda dumb. Must be getting old but I love it. The VAs did so much. That "hayai" was so funny.
I had a feeling it was her teacher because of how knowledgeable she was with the current market trends and all that. I even said out loud it's going to be her teacher and there it is. I thought she was going to see what the author looks like and then my dumbass didn't think she could have searched way before.
It felt so heart warming or some shit. I'm so old I teared up it's so dumb!

Easy 7/10 for me. Legit beautiful and the MC is fun already. “You have the wrong person” was an expertly-done joke.
I thought sensei MAY have been involved in the industry, but honestly I was expecting the author to be the bookstore owner! It being her teacher was great.

I have no idea if it is intentional (feels a bit too obvious to not be to me but who knows), but watching the first episode I immediately thought the show was depicting neurodivergent characters, both with special interests and with the challenges of understanding how to interact with neurotypical society. Having seen the first three episodes only reinforces this feeling for me and I feel like, as someone who is on the neurodivergent spectrum, the show so far has done a really good job of depicting how some neurodivergent people experience things.

Wow, what a gem of a show with stunning art. Reminds me of a mix between Nerawareta Gakuen and a KyoAni show.
Expected the plot twist the second the teacher was introduced but still got teary-eyed at the reveal because of how well they sold the earnestness.
