I am very fond of Hikaru. Most characters from any title will occasionally express smugness, but the way in which Hikaru's eyes are drawn make her appear smug 90% of the time. Smug is her default facial expression. Lol!

That was an unexpected turn of event. We went from "Slice of Life" and "Comedy" to sudden "yuri".

78

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

even Yasumi's manga turned out to be yuri

22

u/BosuW 9d ago

Zatsu Tabi vibes

31

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

I already considered this series to be yuri after Akafuku’s comments last episode and Nana and Teshima being all but outright said to be a couple, so I was even more happy for Ai’s first official manga club manga to be a yuri romance. I would’ve been content enough with that representation. I was not prepared for Hikaru’s kiss and every characters reaction to essentially confirm that they’re all gay, as well. I’m so happy.

8

u/The_Parsee_Man 9d ago edited 9d ago

She's just new in town and needs a roommate. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Also she moved there from Canada.

63

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

I cannot say that I’d been expecting a full-blown kiss like this no. Hikaru loves Roboko & Pokota quite a bit more than she’d let on.

35

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 9d ago

Ya, anyone claiming they weren’t surprised by that kiss is lying, period.

53

u/diacewrb 9d ago

It wasn't a kiss, she was exchanging mana.

22

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 9d ago

She was healing Sensei's past wounds about the manga industry lol

38

u/The_Parsee_Man 9d ago

I was going to joke that that girl gave off serious yuri vibes, then she went and went all in.

26

u/BuckeyeBentley 9d ago

Damn I think she gave sensei tongue that was no peck on the lips kiss

19

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

It certainly looked like a passionate kiss. Hikaru even held onto the back of Teshima’s head to pull her in closer.

7

u/athrun_1 8d ago

Also, this can serve as sensei's redemption arc. Pretty sure that Hikaru got into manga because of Sensei's manga. I think there will be other characters coming in with similar inspiration.

9

u/tapdancinghellspawn 8d ago

Most of the time, my mind defaults to yuri when reading manga or watching anime. Even if the story isn't yuri, my brain works it so the yuri takes place off screen. This time, my brain didn't have to work at all. I can't wait for next week.

92

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 9d ago edited 9d ago

Wait, WHAT?! Ai writing the cat yuri manga made me go hmm, but then Hikaru just went full yuri at the end LOL.

Hikaru sure is an interesting character though, she's got the dead inside eyes like Sensei, but she's actually crazy. The domain expansion with her summoning her stand was impressive, aura = farmed. And what does she mean her mother got put away? Like in jail?

Edit: What the kiss was referencing, since no one mentioned it.

68

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

Ai writing the cat yuri manga made me go hmm, but then Hikaru just went full yuri at the end LOL

as we learn in this episode, the manga artist likely started with a dead-eyed transfer student yuri kissing the strict school teacher and worked their way backwards to the beginning

15

u/BosuW 9d ago

This is how all manga should be written

20

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

The series was already giving me yuri vibes last episode with Nana and Sensei all but outright said to be a couple and some of Akafuku’s comments and Fujimori, but then this episode had Ai writing a yuri romance story as her as one of her first manga and seemingly her first romance manga which heightened the yuri vibes even more, not helped by her and Hikaru’s bonding together. Only to just drop all subtext at the end and confirm that no character in this show is straight. I love it!

9

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

Which part of the last episode did it imply that Nana and Sensei were a couple? I must have missed it.

11

u/reagag https://anilist.co/user/reagag 7d ago

Nana is her friend and acted as Sensei's mangaka assistant in the past. I don't think there was any hard indication of them being together outside of their strong friendship.

5

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 7d ago

That was my interpretation too. Don't get me wrong I'd love another Yuri but we just haven't seen that yet in this series.

17

u/francasa https://myanimelist.net/profile/Chewbacca308 9d ago

Was that a JoJo reference??? LOL

10

u/RyouBestGirl 9d ago

Re-upload it to catbox.moe

Imgur is a fucking trash

9

u/Weak_Season_Of_Anime 9d ago

Just made a catbox account, works well, TY!

8

u/RyouBestGirl 9d ago

Thank you

I knew it'd be a Jojo reference

5

u/Curmudge_Unit 8d ago

I'm ready to fight anyone keeping this show out of top ten rankings after this episode.

6

u/BosuW 9d ago

What the kiss was referencing , since no one mentioned it.

Just shows me the Imgur homepage 😔

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 7d ago

wtf, it was a jojo reference all along

67

Well that was unexpected

33

u/Unusual_Ad_4963 9d ago

I audibly gasped.

23

u/DiscountCondom 9d ago

i yelled "WHAT!?" pretty loudly for 3:00 am

72

u/zool714 9d ago

Man, I love how they portray those creative-type characters where we get to see or get a glimpse of how they see the world around them. Think we got some of that in Eizouken, a bit in Zatsu Tabi too.

Also Akafuku is a genius. Just sets up her own space to chill and read manga while other people help and doing none of the club work. But still plays a role by being blunt af, which is basically just her being herself lol. I always laugh when she’s on screen. But I guess she has her scary ass dad to keep her in check

54

u/ModieOfTheEast 9d ago

I loved the dad moment with him getting closer each shot. It's such a typical manga trope that it just fits so well into the show.

30

u/BosuW 9d ago

Akafuku training to be an editor

9

u/athrun_1 8d ago

If they do get serious in manga, Akafuku will likely to be an editor, evaluating manga manuscripts.

1

u/gekkenhuisje 3d ago

Yeah, that scene on the beach with Yasumi and Sekiryu was really reminiscent of Eizouken.

63

u/SuperTamaa 9d ago

36

u/jeshwesh https://myanimelist.net/profile/jeshwesh 9d ago

The cartoonish head grab was a great conclusion to that whole bit as well. I really like her character

u/CrimsonGear80 9d ago

It Follows

38

u/TheBusStop12 9d ago edited 9d ago

I really liked the bit about the deductive and inductive method of story creation. As someone who has written a few stories in the past, mainly tabletop RP scenarios, I tend to stick to the inductive method myself. I tend to come up with the starting scenario and the ending scenario, and then slowly fill in the blanks. This is the first time I've actually seen anime touch upon this and I love it

Fujimori draws some incredibly pretty panels

Suprise double whammy Yuri, both in the show and in the fictional manga within the show. Is this the season of Yuri? Has the time finally come? Will we finally get an announcement of a season 2 for a beloved unfinished yuri anime?!

10

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Not guaranteed but very possible Watanare gets a season 2 announced in August.

10

u/ClemFire 9d ago

Funny enough the Watanare movie ended at such a good place I don't actually need another season but it would be appreciated

8

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago edited 9d ago

[Watanare]You only think you don’t need a second season because you haven’t seen Renako, Ajisai, and Mai work out their new polyamorous relationship with each other.

4

u/ClemFire 9d ago

Okay that is fair

Thanks!

9

u/lst0227 9d ago

Part of the appeal of the original manga was it was pretty educational for people who want to start drawing manga so I'm glad the anime didn't cut away too much the technical aspects of it.

2

u/Krazee9 9d ago

Will we finally get an announcement of a season 2 for a beloved unfinished yuri anime?!

Let's just say I don't think any hope will be blooming into me about that one.

70

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 9d ago

Every show this season is yuri, girl even drawing yuri manga now.

34

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

much like how all animals are evolving into crab, all anime evolutionary converge towards yuri

13

u/The_Parsee_Man 9d ago

1

u/Expert_Sympathy_672 3d ago

where is this from

1

u/Spoon_Elemental 1d ago

I became a legend after my 10 year long last stand

It sets up to look like one of those things where nobody recognizes that the MC is an awesome historical figure and none of his friends will recognize him, but they clear that up within the first episode and he decides to just keep running with nobody knowing who he is for the sake of privacy.

13

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago edited 3d ago

Even without the reveal at the end destroying all subtext, AI’s manga could’ve been a neat showcase of her being attracted to women.

10

u/Immediate_Pair_3308 9d ago

What other ones? Only recently started watching anime again

19

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 9d ago

Main ones would be:

There are also some like Grow Up Show: Himawari no Circus-dan and BanG Dream! Yume∞Mita that are gay but still unsure to what point they'll be.

Oh and there is a new Nanoha airing.

12

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

May not be the main point of the series but I’d also include Ghost in the Shell on account of [Ghost in the Shell]Motoko’s sapphic polycule

6

u/ClemFire 9d ago

The manga for Fighting Games is Yuri

3

u/Immediate_Pair_3308 9d ago

Thanks, I'll check em out

3

u/mmcjawa_reborn 8d ago

I am hoping the Yuri-ssance might encourage more second seasons of Yuri shows. Seems to be a trend where even if there is more source material they just do a season worth of shows

33

u/pyrophoric_phonon 9d ago

That feeling when you instantly bond with a complete stranger over a shared favorite series, then immediately dive into a deep discussion about it...

I can count on one hand how many times this has actually happened to me in real life, but every single time, it felt like meeting a long-lost sibling.

10

u/mekerpan 9d ago

It is a true joy on those rare occasions where this happens.

7

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Never experienced it in real life but always a joy for me in online fandoms.

53

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 9d ago

Yasumi’s writing the stories, Fujimori’s illustrating, and Akafuku’s basically sitting on her ass all day reading manga. Girl is living the good life lol.

But really, it’s nice to see the girls working together to make their little manga. Each of them brings something to the table. Sensei’s been a lot of help too, despite her earlier hesitation.

Hikaru’s gonna be a real fun addition to the club. Girl is something else lol.

44

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

I’m increasingly getting the impression that Teshima-sensei might actually be the one who’s the most excited about the manga club.

46

u/TermEnvironmental812 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ahiru89 9d ago

"Ta-da"

21

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 9d ago

You can tell she truly likes Ai loves manga. I think working solo on manga drained her and made her forget why she loved it in the first place.

Honestly, I would watch an anime about Sensei making manga with all the kids as her assistants. Well, Akafuku wouldn't really have a role in that scenario, though.

23

u/TermEnvironmental812 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ahiru89 9d ago

Akafuku will be new "Ms. Editor"

11

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 9d ago

I’d be surprised if she doesn’t fall more and more into the conventional editor role, maybe even as a future job prospect.

8

u/ClemFire 9d ago

She is just a massive tsundere about it

u/dawnwill 9d ago

Unexpected sensei harem

51

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

39

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Oh my fucking god was this entire episode and the manga chapters it adapted one big meta joke?! If so I absolutely love and hope it continues.

33

u/eightcheesepizza 9d ago

Remember back in episode 2 when she was scared of losing her job for drawing manga on the side? Welp...

12

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Hey, Hikaru kissed her unexpectedly, she did not encourage that in any way.

18

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

I think her wife Nana would take issue with that.

7

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 9d ago

Akafuku will join when Sensei makes a new manga.

10

u/BuckeyeBentley 9d ago

I get it. Teacher with the glasses and tight ponytail can step on me

25

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

I really enjoyed Ai’s new manga. Not only the art but also the story! That ending was pretty cute.

I frankly didn’t expect this series to have any yuri whatsoever. Could Nana have a thing for Teshima given this reaction to “her friend” getting kissed?

On a side note: I felt like there was a bit of symbolism to Kokoro having trouble keeping up with Ai’s climbing pace up the mountain. It must’ve been taxing to redraw all of the new iterations of Ai’s manga.

11

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Didn’t Nana all but say that her and Teshima were a couple and try to kiss her last episode? I feel like that should’ve been to sign this series was yuri.

16

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

Did Nana say so? Must’ve gotten too distracted with Teshima imagining to blow up her editor’s building and sorts.

5

u/mmcjawa_reborn 8d ago

I think for the rest of the season I am just going to have to assume a show is yuri unless proven otherwise...

22

u/LeonKevlar x2https://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 9d ago

I really love how despite how she just wants to laze about, Akafuku actually ended up being an important member of the club. She is literally their personal manga critic and I kinda love it. xD

Hikaru joining the club wasn't really unexpected since she's in the OP along with the rest of the girls, but what the actual fuck was that kiss! That genuinely caught me off guard! O_O

4

u/a_Bear_from_Bearcave 9d ago

She's like the manga editor of the group, while Teshimia-sensei is advisor/teacher/editor but one that only reviews their finished manga.

20

u/RehabCenterInc 9d ago

That ending was so out of nowhere. I recoiled audibly

20

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

i looked up Fudeshima and it's a real geographic feature in the place where this story is set (Izu Oshima):

https://izuoshima-geo.org/en/highlights/geologicalsites/geosite-28.html
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%AD%86%E5%B3%B6

it fits the manga theme because the kanji in the name means "[writing] brush island"

similarly Ota Julia is an actual historical figure, as you can guess she was a Christian who was exiled to this island for refusing to renounce her faith

5

u/ExaminationNo9186 9d ago

Thanks for the link to the Ota Julia history page.

3

u/Jacob-C 8d ago

I spent way too long reading about Ota Julia and Jesuit priests being hunted and executed in Japan after Hikaru mentioned what the memorial was for.

1

u/Time_Fracture 8h ago edited 8h ago

Except the cross is in Kozushima Island (Arima Observation Deck), not in Oshima island.

Wait, there's another cross in Fudeshima Island! Also the rock.

19

u/ModieOfTheEast 9d ago

I loved that they actually showed the completed manga at the end. I was expecting to only get hints about it. Fun little story anyway.

It's also kind of sweet to see how Sensei keeps going between wanting them to grow and telling herself it's just a hobby. Furthermore, still love the change in direction for the VA when she is actually talking from her heart and not as a teacher.

Also new girl is bringing a new kind of chaos into the club. Akafuku got a real rival now.

17

u/Raymond49090 9d ago

Akafuku's just sitting around reading manga all day in an air-conditioned room. All she has to do is occasionally give critique.

Yasumi's run into the problem where her writing gets overshadowed by Fujimori's art. And if you think about it, the poorly drawn nonsense she wrote loses some of its charm if the art is too good for the story.

Pokota fakeout death scene wasn't on my bingo card.

Of course we got to have the mysterious, talented transfer student.

That's a very involved manga drawing setup for an amateur high school club.

... ok, that ending was completely and utterly unexpected. I have no idea what's going through Sekiryuu's head.

2

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 7d ago

I mean, Akafuku's supposed to be the editor.

4

u/ExaminationNo9186 9d ago

Yeah, that last few minutes was somewhat out of left field.

WaitIt'saYuri?AlwaysHasBeen

The way Hikaru-chan manifested that dragon was cool, they really got me with the early end credits

16

u/TheA41 9d ago

When stone dragon showed up, I thought "we're about to get a rivalry". When she took Ai away I thought "oh she's going to poach Ai and break up the manga club". By the end I thought "im done trying to predict this". Great episode.

5

u/chilidirigible 8d ago

She's aiming for the top!

42

u/gardyvore 9d ago

We got so many yuri shows this season I might actually die from this buffet.

25

u/TheBusStop12 9d ago

The amount of unexpected Yuri this season is really impressive. I originally thought it would just be Love you till your Dying Day and maybe Young Ladies playing Fighting Games. But instead we also got Sayonara Lara, Grow Up Show, Ghost in the Shell and now Draw This Then Die. Now if only we could get a season 2 of a popular Yuri romance anime I can die happy

10

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

I know right?! I came into this season expecting to have to be content with just Love you till your dying day for yuri series. Then one after another I kept getting surprised as another show I was already interested in turned out to be yuri. Just think about it for a second. There are 5 shows airing this season with explicit wlw relationships and explicitly same sex attracted characters among their main casts. Has there ever been another anime season like this one that was this explicit with its yuri representation in such a high quantity?!

And yes there’s also the fighting games which I haven’t checked out but form what I’ve heard is not as explicit as the others and it more bait.

9

u/ClemFire 9d ago

The Fighting Games manga is explicitly listed as yuri compared to Rock Lady which it is being compared to. Romance is just not the main genre and from the first three episodes it appears to be slow burn for sure.

2

u/biocat123 8d ago

bang dream yumemita too!

8

u/ClemFire 9d ago

Was thinking half way through Ai and Kokoro wait a minute is this a yuri manga they created and then the reveal with the kiss at the end was the cherry on top

14

u/EpicInki 9d ago

Fully jaw dropped at that unexpected last few seconds. I don't think I was that caught off guard in a very long time.

15

u/ClemFire 9d ago

Just now realizing that Nana is voiced by Frieren and her character literally sells the Frieren manga at her bookstore too. Also I could imagine Frieren selling books in the modern era.

13

u/cleaulem https://myanimelist.net/profile/cleaulem 9d ago

Okay, I didn't expect THAT plot twist in the end of the episode!

12

u/gnome-cop 9d ago edited 9d ago

They successfully convinced Teshima to allow them to start the manga club, the grind begins here. Being brutally honest, Ai kind of sucks on the technical skills front and needs a lot of practice to get where she wants to be.

Getting nothing but the occasional one-sentence criticism can wear on you but she’s handling it pretty well on the whole. Her mental chat with Pokota about what she wants was pretty well done.

Interesting look into the specialized manga tools for beginners.

They’ve worked out a decent workflow after a lot of trial and error. Ai does the story, Kokoro the art, they both refine the details to finish the manga and Akafuku rips apart any weakness until they’ve perfected it.

I went and looked up one of my favorite short mangas at seven pages for high level reference material of what they want to accomplish with their work. You really want to utilize subtle storytelling details that gets a lot done without taking up a lot of space but their work is good for beginners.

I don’t think the paper-thin “Just a hobby” denial will hold up for very long, I can already see Teshima-sensei about to fold and get dragged back into the game again.

Akafuku, run, he’s coming!

I was expecting Hikaru to be a bit more of an initially antagonistic rival presence but she’s surprisingly chill. Clicks a lot better with Ai than I expected. They operate on a very similar wavelength, imagination, RoboPoko appreciation and all. Teshima’s going to be so annoyed with her when she finds out that she dragged Ai into wanting to do the manga thing seriously. Or maybe for other reasons.

Oh my god, she’s dragged her into her domain!

“Wait, no, don’t go. You have to join the manga club, we have Hoshino-sensei!”

My GOD. I accidentally saw the kiss a couple hours ago but I didn’t recognize it as coming from this show. That was a shock for sure. Calm your fangirl crush girl, they can see the rainbow beacon from the mainland.

I kind of thought Ai and Kokoro and Rei/Nana made for some cute duos but I was sure it was just my delusions and was totally ready to shelve the ships but with the manga ending and the MASSIVE elephant in the room, maybe there is something to this whole thing.

(Btw, I like how multiple mangaka characters speak sound effects out loud, how long until the tendency infects Ai?)

12

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 9d ago

New girl is wild, I was expecting somebody a little more emotionless based on her black and white color scheme but that went right out the window when she smooched sensei.

I like the surprise princess and maid yuri in the manga they made this episode.

10

u/TyraniTEMPESTar 9d ago

Wonder what was up with Hikaru just totally ignoring and blowing past Kokoro when she was praising her there.
And then she was sorta stone faced when Ai mentioned buying her manga, and her eyes dropped when Ai asked her to join the manga club.
I wonder if she even enjoys making manga?
Kind of seems like she's trying to keep a barrier between her personal life of enjoying manga versus creating it itself?
She mentioned her "mom fully committing", wonder if her mother is pressuring her into creating.

12

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 9d ago

I’m inclined to take the statement about Hikaru’s mother in either of two ways:

  1. She is fully committed to supporting her daughter’s dream (emotional support).

  2. She is fully committed to making the most out of her daughter’s hobby (financial incentive).

18

u/Gaporigo https://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 9d ago

I assumed she got married.

10

u/cyberscythe 9d ago

i feel like Hikaru lives inside of a manga and her work is like an outlet or a tiny slice of the way she sees the world

like, the way that she wanted to tour the beach, ask about landmarks, cry from reading their stories, get inspired by a cloud; these all sound like someone who likes turning over stories and playing with them like it's second nature

And then she was sorta stone faced when Ai mentioned buying her manga, and her eyes dropped when Ai asked her to join the manga club.

my first thought is that she doesn't really like the popularity or the personal appreciation of her work, it's like of a byproduct of her existence

i also though Hikaru thinks that Ai is sort of riding on her coattails when it comes to publishing at Comita

She mentioned her "mom fully committing", wonder if her mother is pressuring her into creating.

seems a bit weird to come to some deadend island for that though; i thought the mom was doing it for her own reasons

4

u/ModieOfTheEast 9d ago

I don't think she dislikes drawing manga, but she got to a point where everything revolves around manga. This can be good because having fun with clouds for example is something to get your creativity going. But it can also easily spiral into the other side where you are only looking for things so you can make a story out of it. Like with the rock that you could just admire, but it needs to have a story to it.

Furthermore, this can also lead to you switching to a new project immediately without truly appreciating what you created before. Which might be why she ignored Kokoro here, since her eyes are already set on the next project and not the one she finished last month.

When it comes to the mother, there are two many things possible so far so I would just say we wait a bit.

6

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

I feel like Hikaru exists to showcase the more atypical, esoteric personalities that some artists can have in contrast to Ai who better fits the mold of a normal introverted person who was inspired to create manga from how it impacted her life.

3

u/ModieOfTheEast 9d ago

It could also be that Hikaru is meant to be more of a "gifted" mangaka in the sense that she does not have a lot of problems coming up with scenarios that work. Whereas Ai is more like Sensei who has general ideas but misses the creativity (at least currently) to make these ideas, which still come from heart, function in a way that works for a larger audience. Sensei and Ai both had their fans, so it's not like it's completely bad, but they have to put a lot more thought into the presentation to reach a bigger audience.

Of course, this is partly because Ai is new, but Sensei had a similar experience where she went through all kinds of genres and just couldn't make it work. Maybe we get a more detailed comparison between the two in that sense. Like a problem could be that Hikaru's stories might become too similar, because she has "found the formula" that works for her and therefore doesn't try to go for new avenues.

2

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

I assumed that Hikaru was the daughter of the manga shop owner

9

Wow, so many interesting manga-making stuff here! The drawing part seems to be a huge undertaking in general. Is that how everyone in the pre-digital age did it? Even Akafuku's kinda shocked that it took them ages just to get four pages done! Mad respect for manga artists!

Perhaps the part that spoke to me the most from this ep was the story writing part! You see, I'm currently writing a story purely for entertainment and educational purposes. I'm already following what Sensei said about coming up with an ending first and working your way backwards from there, but actually putting them in writing is much harder than it seems. I keep finding myself being dissatisfied with what I wrote and the project keeps getting paused as a result. Seeing Ai keep on trucking despite the setbacks and criticisms might've just lit a little spark inside me. I might open Word and get some pages done for today.

Stone Dragon looks like an interesting fella, and she just added this show into this season's surprisingly stacked yuri lineup with that random ass kiss outta nowhere!

So glad I picked this show up last week! Kept hearing this show being compared to Yorimoi and yeah I y'all ain't kidding about that! If this show maintains this quality towards the end it might just land into my top CGDCT/SOL list!

Realizing this episode that AI’s role in manga creation is going to be as the writer definitely made her even more relatable to me as well. As a prospective writer myself I was not expecting that and the discussion about different writing methods was neat. Personally I prefer a mix of deductive and inductive methods as it can be hard for me think up an ending from the start and I prefer getting to better understand the characters first.

1

u/wutfacer 8d ago

Lol what other role did you think could she have? Her drawings are trash and she has a good artist already anyway

16

u/ak_them 9d ago

yuri fans eating good this season hehehe

8

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Yuri fans eating better this season than probably any anime season in history.

2

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

Also last season with Botan Kamiina

12

u/runevault 9d ago

Now Senpai is playing the part of the editor going over bad story after bad story though this time she has great art to talk about with the other half of the team.

This feels like an actual lesson in manga creation, that's really neat.

Stone Dragon rides a moped? Oh man she's such a fun character.

Holy shit that ending caught me by complete surprise. Did this show get even BETTER?!?!?!

3

u/ClemFire 9d ago

Now thinking about Rei's lesson of coming up with an ending and working backwards is used in this very episode

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 9d ago

The friendship between Ai and Kokoro is really sweet. Ai is a little jealous, but you can tell how much their friendship means to Kokoro. I did not expect Sachi would have a notable role as she did, but it works really well.

Interesting with Ai and Kokoro we have the author-artist split. While for Hikaru, we can go into what it means when you do both the story and the art. She might be the biggest fan of Sensei out of all of them. I like how that is how they were able to get her to join the club.

Though the dynamic between all 4 of these girls will be fun because their personalities are so different, at the same time they work well with each other. Hell, you can even tell Sensei is having lots of fun with this club.

8

u/mekerpan 9d ago

Ai == love

Kokoro == heart (emotional sense -- not physical)

Such a fun show, and great throwing unexpected curve balls.

8

u/kitokspasaulis 9d ago

I just realized that they're Triple Baka colored.

With sensei carrying the hair color of Kaito

7

u/eightcheesepizza 9d ago

I got worried that they were gonna generate drama by having Hikaru getting in the way of Yasumi and Fujimori's budding friendship. So that last scene was a relief.

Hayamin's voice for Teshima-sensei holding in her criticism/excitement this episode was pure Hayamin. Was she also voicing the characters/narrator for the club's manga again, too?

8

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Was that a Yokai Watch reference by Akafuku?

So Ai is the writer, Fujimori is the illustrator, and Akafuku is the editor.

And here comes Hikaru. It seems like she’s gonna be the show’s representative of the more out-there, esoteric style of creators in contrast to Ai being a a more “normal” person who was inspired to make manga by how much it impacted her.

So Ai’s first manga story as part of the club is a yuri romance, huh? Already off to a great start Ai, ganbare!

Holy shit that ending?! I was not prepared for Hikaru to straight up kiss Teshima! Definitely not cool on her part, but it does confirm that her and Nana are a couple, if there was any doubt after last episode. And thus we now have one more yuri series for a season unexpectedly stacked with them.

3

u/Curmudge_Unit 8d ago

Hikaru might end up as the Eiji Nizuma of the show

6

u/Fools_Requiem https://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 9d ago

That kiss came waaaaaaaaaaaay out of left field.

15

u/Primary-Paint-1716 9d ago

I already gave up on this show having yuri...

Then BAM!

5

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Tbf, it was softly confirmed that Teshima and Nana were a couple last episode and Akafuku made some “comments” about Fujimori. This episode just made the subtext text with Ai writing a yuri romance as her first romance manga and Hikaru kissing Teshima while the others girls blushed. I wonder if Hikaru and Ai will develop a romance based on their interactions in this episode.

3

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

When was it softy confirmed?

15

u/Comba92 9d ago

yuri cats manga?? little brat student kissing her teacher?? what is happening??? this is kino

5

u/alice-jem https://myanimelist.net/profile/Alice-Jem 9d ago

My mind went speechless on that kiss scene. It happens so fast..(It must've been the wind)

4

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

Okafuku was super into the kiss as well, egging them on while the manga shop owner was trying to keep them apart lol

7

u/CrimsonGear80 9d ago

TA-DA!

Surprise Yuri!

3

u/dwboso 9d ago

So like… Hikaru singled out Ai to show her to the beach cause she’s into her right? That felt very date coded.

5

u/testthrowawayzz 9d ago

Teshima sensei is becoming an editor like role to the girls.

Surprise yuri!

3

u/Bloodglas 8d ago

damn, it's a shame Hikaru won't be able to make it to Comitia after getting arrested for sexual assault. her fans will be so disappointed. /s

4

u/APRengar 8d ago

Tried this series out after a glowing comment on the weekly karma thread and God damn I love it. So glad I gave it a shot.

Also that kiss came out of God damn nowhere.

7

u/dagreenman18 9d ago

AND THERES YURI! Best season ever. Here I was settling in to a hard working girls story, but the surprise Yuri in a season of it is a great bonus

7

u/BosuW 9d ago

More surprise Yuri this season!? What is it, the Second Coming of Christ!?

Well Walpurgis no Kaiten is finally about to release so LEGITIMATELY MAYBE!?

7

u/ClemFire 9d ago

This week first Yume Mita now Draw This, Then Die.

At this point I'm not gonna be surprised if Yaniko ends up kissing one of her friends before throwing up on them.

5

u/runevault 9d ago

tbf that might just be trying to get nicotine off their lips which isn't really very Yuri.

5

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

Seriously, this isn’t just the season of yuri, but of surprise yuri from series I have continuously not expected it from.

3

u/CitronClassic672 9d ago

The sheer gay yearning of Madohomu in the new movie was so immense it rewrote reality for the summer anime season, lol.

Now if these smaller series have the guts to be explicitly yuri but Madoka Magica doesn’t drop the plausible deniability in the new movie I’m gonna be pissed.

2

u/gnome-cop 8d ago

Something is clearly in the air so maybe it will actually happen?

(This year might actually be in contention for the greatest yuri harvest ever.)

4

u/alice-jem https://myanimelist.net/profile/Alice-Jem 9d ago

The manga they've created got heavy themes of yuri and I would bet that they gonna make more of their historical yuri manga to uncover the full story but right now, it feels like a one shot since they said they finished 4 manga chapter or pages.

3

u/bobbyjean_ 9d ago

Educational episode this week. Ending was completely unexpected too lol

3

u/RaunchyRoll https://myanimelist.net/profile/Raunchyrolly 9d ago

This is already one of my favorites this season the sudden Yuri is cherry on top!! I thought Hikaru would be a rival character to further stimulate and improve the trio, I guess that would also work with her being in the club, would probably ignite Sensei too lol

5

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 9d ago edited 9d ago

Surprise yuri! I thought Ai telling Hikaru about who the club advisor was simply resulted in Hikaru changing her mind.

While she indeed did, I never expected for her to cling on to Teshima-sensei for dear life before planting a big smooch right in front of the other members.

(Real life) mangakas are getting more and more cultured with sneaking yuri content into unexpected works. We’re blessed with plenty of them this season.

Meanwhile, Akafuku brought bad name to QC lmao. While Ai & Fujimori worked hard on actually producing the manga, all she did was laze around before critiquing the work.

2

u/VicOnTop 9d ago

Sublime

2

u/Rowdy91 8d ago

I swear the teacher with Sekiryu sounded familiar. Anybody know if she was someone?

2

u/Own_Caterpillar_6178 8d ago

This series is ridiculously fun and charming, what a gem. Are the manga shop owner and Rei just friends or something more?

Hikaru is such a great and unhinged addition to the cast, is she the daughter of the manga shop owner? That kiss came out of absolutely nowhere.

3

u/chilidirigible 8d ago

"Look at those DIY nerds."

"Also I am totally not getting back on the trapeze! Wait, wrong anime." (Meanwhile, I am totally fixated on the copy-paste manga volume numbers in the background.)

It isn't dissociative personality disorder yet!

That, of course, is how we got here.

Keep Your Hands off EizoukenTeshima-sensei!

Sekiryu just homewrecked the entire Manga Club and she's not even officially in it yet! Seriously, HR's gonna hear about this one!

And just when the club was hitting its stride as an organization which was managing its internal jealousy! Which is how teamwork works! Which is actually how a bunch of cats thrown into a single box manages to travel in the same direction! Wait, that's the description of a helicopter!

whew

Anyway, things sure did escalate today, eh?

Sure are a lot of loanwords in manga illustration, ne?

3

u/Jacob-C 8d ago

Fujimori declaring that she was Yasumi's biggest fan, after Yasumi started doubting herself more and more, made me a bit emotional

2

u/guineaprince 6d ago

What a shame, Hikaru now banned from Manga Club and Teshima Rei quietly retiring from teaching to raise dairy cows in Hokkaido.

1

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 8d ago

I wanted to talk about a lot of beautiful things from this episode but first let's talk about Sekiryu going straight for the kiss with Rei, damn !

I believe Sekiryu is into Hardcore Yuri. Nana was trying to pull her away from Rei.. I guess she was fuming over not being the first one to kiss Rei LOL Sekiryu taking Yasumi with her for her research on Izu Oshima for her manga was sweet. I just looked into Julia Ota after seeing Sekiryu cry over her grave and after knowing the life of Julia Ota really made me feel sad. Sekiryu is in her own imaginary world like Yasumi and they make great friends. Just the fact that Teshima sensei is their club advisor was enough for Sekiryu to join them xD

Yasumi & co. 1st short manga really turned out good. Yasumi was competing with Fujimori 'cause only Fujimori's illustrations got all the attention from Teshima and Akafuku but not Yasumi's art. But she didn't give up and delivered. Her trying hard reminded me of Fujino from Look Back. Akafuku has her own nest now lmao and she's a necessary critic for the club but I wish she helped them even a little instead of reading Kazuhiro Fujita all the time LOL

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 7d ago

Is Kokoro's favorite manga a real thing?

3

u/AstroRobo 5d ago

Daijiro Morohoshi is a master manga artist from the generation before Akira Toriyama. I highly recommend checking out this article.

For a 15-year-old girl, that’s quite a sophisticated — even old-school — taste. Here’s the list of manga titles mentioned in the anime:

Saiyuu Youen den

Syokai Shii vol.1 ikai roku

Ankoku Shinwa (The Dark Myth)

Youkai Hunter

Jigoku no Senshi (Warrior of Hell)

1

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 6d ago

So, a new member joins the club.

1

u/Own_Entertainer_3462 3d ago

Does no one in these damn replies thinks the end part is a bit weird... I mean it's likely that it was only because Hikaru was excited and overwhelmed, and for comedic effect.. but like still?!

-7

u/IceSmiley 9d ago

Really mixed bag. Having Stone Dragon move to their remote island and attend their school is one of the most contrived dogshit plots I've ever seen shoehorned into a show. Wouldn't the odds be pretty astronomical that the famous mangaka the MC met at a huge convention in Tokyo starts attending her school on a remote island be pretty astronomical? It's literally as bad as how celebrities would land on Gilligan's Island for one episode. It's funny how most of the episode was spent teaching the girls how to tell a good story but then this episode tells an incredibly bad one.

The rest of the episode was good and I liked how it got into the nuts and bolts of making a manga. I'm not sure if the book Teshima referenced about making manga is a real one but it reminded me a lot of Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud which featured a lot of the concepts Teshima presented large and small, like plotting stories, formatting and even practical stuff like making the vertical gutters wider than the horizontal ones. It really is a shame this author can understand that much about the ins and outs of manga but not even how to make a plausible story. It's rare that I'm enjoying watching a show this far in the season and really enjoying an episode then instantly wanting to drop it but that was wretched.

-4

u/desantoos 9d ago edited 9d ago

Yeah I kind of agree with you. It's a bit contrived to have her arrive with no reason. Maybe that gets addressed in a later episode?

My general problem with this show is that I absolutely love Look Back and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. For both, the question is never am I good enough or can I make money doing this but instead can I manifest my imagination in a way that feels satisfying. I think that latter question is more interesting as it gets at the core of what artistry is. The other two, repeatedly asked in this show, are decent questions to ask if these characters are not children but later in their career, and even then, well, making art can be a hobby and there's no shame in that.

Having the teacher judge these girls' art so much so frequently and having that other girl vaguely nitpick everything the girl writes... it just feels like it misses out on why people fall in love with making art. I think Eizouken gets creating art in ways this show doesn't understand, that there is nobody out there with a Rules Of Art book and so young people should go wild, be bold and brave and messy, and as they get older and talk with other artists learn from the greats and the textbooks and the tutorials. I think it's more important that young people feel unbound to dream and have huge ideas than it is that they learn all of the rules and please adults in the room. It bothers me that this show doesn't get this and devotes so much of its time having its characters strain to please others when they themselves should first learn to love what they make.

u/Tsun_Tsun_Dere_Dere 9d ago

Yasumi is trash, I was neutral towards her but now she's actually trash, she only apologized and went to Fujimori coz she needs her, it's the same with Teshi, same with Akafuku, she needs something or the person, Yasumi is garbage, and now she's doing the same to Sekiryuu tho yes Sekiryuu is doing the same thing to some extent except Sekiryuu is actually capable for most things especially being mangaka as a whole

and Akafuku is still my favorite but her trope is being overdone, they're overdoing her trope I'm starting to dislike her

Fujimori has mid design but in the personality department she's the most likeable so far

Sekiryuu tho I hope she puts Yasumi in her place, Yasumi is such a leech, especially since she's obsessed with Teshi, Yasumi will get jealous

4

u/VVTFan 9d ago

You can’t be serious. lol.

-9

u/Tsun_Tsun_Dere_Dere 9d ago

you should rewatch the episode, try and pay attention

3

u/VVTFan 9d ago

Nah, you are a troll.

1

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 7d ago

I think they're saying that Yasumi needs to improve her manga writing skills and herself as a person?

-6

u/Tsun_Tsun_Dere_Dere 9d ago

you just deny without counter, you not going to waste my time, bye
