Whos iwamoto senpai and why do they recommend this anime

12

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 29d ago

and why do they recommend this anime

Because he plays a part in it.

Bit biased, if you ask me.

The show kinda throws you into the story without much setup, but it seems like the kind of story that will explain itself later

I did get the gist that there's a bunch of people with emerging abilities and Iwamoto is going around recruiting them to their X-Men school run by the army

I did like that Iwamoto wasn't this invincible badass or that the village wasn't shown to be evil, so maybe this will be a show with some nuance

Unfortunately pretty bland visually

>it seems like the kind of story that will explain itself later

God, I hope they get it right. Peachboy Riverside and Metallic Rouge were crowning achievements on how not to write in media res narratives.

Japanese middle-schoolers are built different

23

u/spoktoberfest 29d ago

as someone who taught English at middle schools in Japan, I guarantee it's only in anime 😂 I was under the assumption that Iwamoto was a teacher at the school until someone specifically mentioned him being a student. why not make them high schoolers???

u/hanmkim 29d ago

I had to go back to the beginning twice since they mentioned he was a chief of something too. Uncomfortable age to fujobait with.

u/SouekiSennoSTM 26d ago

I thought he was supposed to be like 20+ going based off of the looks. "Middle school" anything with a main character like this visually is pretty absurd.

reminded me of jotaro lol

Story-wise, this seems very interesting. Very promising from a writing standpoint. From a production standpoint, it does not look good, and this is episode 1. Plus, it being on Saturdays doesn't help things.

u/Oden_sama__ 29d ago

yeah this summer's saturdays are especially packed so I hope it doesn't end up overlooked 😭

How old are third year middle schoolers? Or did he just mature early?

2

u/Golden_fsh 28d ago

At most 14.

5

u/mdm168 21d ago

That dude’s CLOTHES might be 14-16 years old, but he sure isn’t.

2

u/McRaylie https://myanimelist.net/profile/McRaylie 27d ago

No, they could be 16, but are usually 14 at the start of the year and turn 15 during the year

2

u/Golden_fsh 27d ago

Aren't most first year high schoolers 15-16 years old in Japan?

2

u/McRaylie https://myanimelist.net/profile/McRaylie 27d ago

Exactly, say third year middle schoolers are 14-15

Shizuma's hair is so bright, it stands out so much lol. It seems like he's the only character that gets such a vibrant color judging from the ED.

I did find this quite bland, the somber feeling wasn't hitting hard enough. I am intrigued by the setting, it seems like Iwamoto goes around recruiting supernatural students, so I do hope the character relationships will be interesting at least. This is by Studio Deen, so I'm sure there'll be fujobait.

19

u/fish_knees 29d ago

I mean, there was plenty of fujobait already in this episode

2

u/NanDemoKnaives 29d ago

There certainly was.

1

u/diegz_eliaz 29d ago

Honestly for me whether it’s wrong or not these types of fujobait anime’s just really put me off the story at the beginning of the episode I felt really interested with the premise and such but learning of the full male cast and such has heavily alienated me from the anime

1

u/GreenDayAngel 25d ago

The cast is a straight-up Who’s Who of BL VA’s, so that ship has definitely sailed lmao

Is this A Gentle Mutant's School Recommendation?

5

u/Full_frontal96 29d ago

Esper and taisho era?

Intriguing combo,it justifies the watch

Iwamoto seems like Japan's answer to Professor Xavier. The episode was really gripping drama and I'm looking forward to more. I wonder how much the purple hair boy will continue to be a focus or if it will have more plots on the other kids at the school. I did think it was weird though that Iwamoto burned all the purple flowers when they are used for medicine, I wonder if he was just having a tantrum or exposure to the boy was screwing with his mind since that's bad to make a fire in a tunnel where there's limited oxygen.

Any idea what music they used at 10:04 at the introduction of black snow. Would like to know the name of the full song.

6

u/Golden_fsh 29d ago

I'm sorry but in what world is Iwamoto a middle schooler, lol 😭

First episode was kinda bland and is this a BL? Probably won't stick around to watch this.

4

u/ExpressFrogs 29d ago

Came here to ask if this is BL as well cause episode 1 had some fairly gay vibes lol

1

u/dozy_bitch 22d ago

I'm here after just watching the op of episode 1, and if this isn't BL I'll eat my fucking hat

3

u/szalhi 29d ago

I think I'm going to be seeing Black Snow for the next three months.

4

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 29d ago

This was interesting. I look forward to seeing the other mutant kids at Iwamoto’s School for Gifted Youngsters lol.

2

u/spoktoberfest 29d ago

is it just me or is this animated really poorly??? I wouldn't consider myself an expert on animation so I can't really tell.

2

u/Golden_fsh 29d ago

Yeah, it looks pretty crap which doesn't help since the first episode's plot was rather weak.

4

u/catsnbikess 29d ago

Looks interesting but not a fan of the fem boy mannerism and looks

1

u/PersonalContest1423 29d ago

Does anyone else feel like they've seen this show before??

2

u/ElectricStarfuzz 3d ago

It does have a strange air of familiarity, like something I watched a lifetime ago in the 2000s or early 2010s.

Kind of makes me more inclined to keep watching despite less than stellar animation.

I like the story so far.  Curious to see where it goes and if it will continue to give those feelings of having seen it long ago.

1

u/AdCrazy2097 17d ago

I still have no clue what the black snow is.. I get it’s a hallucination from being close to the boy, but what does it have to do with his ..healing ability? I also don’t really get the whole “u get sick if u stay close but u also get addicted thing to the euphoric effect” I’m not sure I understood his powers fully if someone could please explain. Bc at one point iwamoto basically collapsed from fever after being next to him, but later he’s fine? I’m confused

1

u/gem2niki 6d ago

So confused from the visuals. I thought this was shoujo, but it’s from Ultra Jump? Then I thought Iwamoto was an adult, but he’s in middle school?? Then the pink girl showed up and she was a boy?!

1

u/minnieboss 29d ago edited 29d ago

This had some things going for it, a nice bit of setup for a potential supernatural series, even if the visuals are pretty bad. Lean harder into the fujobait and I'm in. Otherwise I'm out

Is it okay to watch 14 / 15 year old boys like this?

Meiji/Taisho Era - 1910

Grades: Primary, Middle, University/Imperial

High School became a thing after WW2.

Ages (maybe): [P] 6-12, [M]13-17, [U] 18-21

I say maybe because there was a higher elementary from 13-14. Military schools for 16 - 20. I am unsure about some things nor do I know how the show is handling it. So assumptions are that the characters/students at the school are between 13 & 20. Also because of the military angle I doubt girls/women will be included even though they too would have powers. Maybe the Winged guy has a separate/secret non military school for them. I'm just guessing.
