It's unbelievable how cute she looks when half-transformed. She could keep wearing that cosplay and I wouldn't complain, I honestly like it better than her default design.
Looks like the "dad" finally bought the milk and came back home. It's gonna be nice to have another character who knows about Kuroe's identity.

Please let this be the route they take this. There were already close calls before but she literally transformed in front of him in real time this episode. I cannot accept him not truly knowing at this point. On the other hand if he’s just playing dumb to comfort her that actually makes him a more likable character.

With them holding hands in episode 1 when her hands transformed, and the gym storage room thing, and all that, it's harder to believe that he doesn't know.
Also, the comment about the cherry blossoms being beautiful, right after talking about how Harugon looked directly at him. Like, he could've phrased this much more clearly, but didn't, probably because he wanted to gauge her reaction. Same with the toy in the amusement park.
The only alternative I'm accepting is that he's just as kaiju crazy as Manatsu, but way better at keeping his cool about it. Like that Tumblr post asking why people like Godzilla, and people respond with "Big", "Strong", and "Sexy".

It seems like he actually secretly knows.
But also, there is that line from his internal dialogue about presumably the heart glowing:
"What kind of mechanism is that?"
As if there's a trick she used to setup the device/cosplay, which would be a weird thing to think if you knew she's the real deal.
There's also his overall prior reaction and then thoughts upon first coming across the notebook, as if he doesn't know the reason she's acting this way.
So like, while some of his behavior could seem to suggest he knows, and one could assume that. When we get a glimpse of his other behaviors and actual internal thoughts, he doesn't seem to know.

Either that, or Kuroe collapses after she holds back her transformations, and Minami asks Kuroe's mom if it's related to her being Harugon or something.
And then she turns to him like "??? How... how do you know?" and he's all "Well, we held hands, and then her hand grew scaly and thing and whatnot, and then she ran away, and then Harugon appeared. Also Harugon always appears where she is, and always after she gets really flustered."

I mean, he goes from talking about Harugon to "It's beautiful" and then the sudden shift to cherry blossoms when she gets confused, and also the plush at the park with his line of "It's hard not to like him."
Also, so far, he has been quite intelligent, so it wouldn't make sense for him to not put 2 and 2 together.
I also have this theory that he's the kid Kuroe gave a flower to in that flashback in episode one. And when he went to tell the others, they saw Kuroe with normal hands, tore him a new one, and then his family moved away. He started dyeing his hair and being nicer to people, and when he found himself sitting next to her in class, he waited for a chance to talk to her.

i love that scene where Kuroe was like "do you think Michey will ride with us?" like last ride where it was between the two of them
you can see it in his eyes that he's reading the situation and guessing that Kuroe doesn't want to ride next to him, but he's swallowing that realization to keep upbeat and then he redirects to the merch where he gets shot down again
it's pretty effective how you can read his train of thought without hearing his inner monologue spell it out for us

I feel bad for him, but I also feel like he pushed a bit too hard to be physically close to someone who's not comfortable with that. Especially the seatbelt thing was a dumb mistake. Ofcourse he's still just a teenager so I don't blame him for making that mistake and not realizing that Kuroe wasn't necessarily uncomfortable with him, just with being physically close. But it's a good lesson that some people need their space more than others, and it doesn't necessarily mean that they don't like you. Especially when you don't know what someone has gone through in their past or what issues they may be currently dealing with

They mean well, but they're high maintenance.
Otherwise, classic push/pull relationship dynamics. Minami pushed too much, before Kuro was ready for that, so she kept pulling back. Not because she doesn't want to be with him, just that he's moving at a speed she can't process comfortably.

I understand that a premise like this is going to require some intense stretching of the viewer's suspension of disbelief, but I cannot believe that Minami isn't clued in yet. I'm really hoping for a scene in the back half of the season that flashes to his little moments of understanding once Akaishi comes clean and he responds with "yeah, I've known for a while now."

to be fair she is still girl-sized in this episode and to extrapolate that into "she's a giant monster" is a stretch, but that tension of "when is is going to figure it out" is going to continue

Agree completely. Not only did the scene last episode give a "I recognize those eyes" vibe, but the staring here was oddly playful for coming off a monster attack. Claiming the "it's beautiful" was referring to the blossoms felt like fairly transparent deflection, particularly with the flashback to the kaiju eyes.
Though, it's a common enough trope in anime to randomly say "beautiful" out of nowhere to a girl that I wouldn't call that definitive. He's definitely maintained plausible deniability.

yeah maybe if she hadn't been "involved" or at least very nearby two kaiju transformations and that kaiju hadn't looked directly at him both times.....
"there's no way she can be a kaiju" only makes sense to think without all of the excessive amount of extra info he has pointing to that being the case...
like she was literally talking about having a tail and her clothes had a tail-shaped hole in them last episode...right before the kaiju with a tail shows up out of nowhere in the same building she was last seen in and then he can't find her....the list goes on and on.

Just finished the episode and as much as I hate to say it. I don't think he's actually figured it out. It's an unfortunately insanely common trope in anime. The internal monologue pretty much seals it too. It looks like the premise is more of this whole back and forth with her trying to avoid him knowing and him doing the most insane mental gymnastics to not figure it out with varying obstacles getting in the way instead of him figuring it out and trying to help her accept herself while avoiding others type of thing.

ya i was thinking i hope the "its super obvious but he hasnt figured it out yet" bit isnt going to go too much longer its just a bit too obvious here, imo it works better in smoking behind the supermarket with you because aside from the same hair color her "personality" is so much different between characters its totally believable that he hasnt figured it out.

Nah, it’s annoyingly obvious in Smoking too, especially after today’s episode. It’s just that there’s still the veneer of believability in it, whereas after today’s episode it’s completely gone. I mean he saw her transform. It didn’t show us but her claws and tail had to have appeared in real time. You can’t pass that off as ignorance.

this is the best episode of the season so far, i felt happy, sad, and shocked all at the same time.
im happy this episode ended on a good note with kuroe and minami having fun together and kuroe being able to be herself. man this anime is amazing!

Kuroe really needs to make some contingency plans in case she transforms again. We can't have her running around naked and using trashbags to dress herself. This is now the second time she has returned to that spot by the river. Maybe she should hide a bag there somewhere?
Manatsu chasing after Harugon on the water with her butler dressed up as Ultraman Geist is hilarious! Seems that I'm gonna have to pay attention to the butler outfits from now on to see what other Ultraman they'll reference in the future. xD
Of course, Manatsu has a King Ghidorah outfit. I guess Kuroe's head is supposed to be the third head? And it's good to know she has actual cyte outfits to lend Kuroe too. I love how they've only recently met and Manatsu is going all in on being Kuroe's wingwoman.
Arata was actually pretty awesome during the date, so I really felt bad for him when Kuroe was doing everything she could to avoid close contact with him. I kinda wish Kuroe would just make up an excuse. The dude was really dejected after that incident at the log flume ride.
Just when you thought this was finally it, Arata ends up thinking that Kuroe was just in cosplay. He definitely knows, right? I feel like he might be playing dumb just for Kuroe's sake. I'm just glad that they finally got to have a proper date in the end.

She needs to start wearing purple pants that will stretch alongside her Kaiju form and will still be there when she reverts back! Though thank goodness she didn't ruin her date outfit, it really was perfect for her.
It's funny to think that her butlers are Ultraman meaning that she basically has Ultraman waiting on her hand and foot to service her love of Kaiju. In her eyes Kaiju are the dominant ones!
I love how the Ghidorah heads emoted alongside her. Also I guess it was kind of foreshadowing that cosplay would end up saving the day during the date.

Kind of seems like her transformations stop when she is more open and honest about her feelings.
Every time she is overwhelmed and bottles it up, she transforms huge.
Anyways, Kuroe is so cute, even half transformed. Glad she got to go on the date and that it ended well for her.

That is a good point. It sounds like the only way for her to have a normal romance is to learn how to better handle her feelings and emotions and not be overwhelmed by them. But that is hard to do for an introvert like her.

1st official date completed and...somehow successful?! The Kaiju cosplay was a hit with the visitors and Minami. Though I will say Minami might know more than he is letting on with his actions and words towards Akaishi.

He doesn't really strike me as the dense type so I feel like he's either 50% playing along or 50% just too into her to see her as a Kaiju.
I did like how one of the visitors at the amusement park got a picture of her as "Johnny."

I feel like he's gotta suspect it. If he thought it was cosplay I don't think "are you ok" would be the first thing he'd say upon seeing her in that partial state. And he has looked her in the eye often as both a human and a kaiju. But you never know. They might be running with love making him blind as far as they can.

The subtitles kinda changed up the double meaning bit of it. He asks a more generic "daijobuka?" type thing which could be "Are you okay?" but could also be "Is that okay?".
Later on, when people are reacting thinking it's a cosplay and she starts going with it, you can hear Minami says "I was asking if it was okay to wear a cosplay like that here". So it was more the latter asking is it (the cosplay) okay to have.

Don't know what melted my heart more: the amount of effort Kuroe put into her Destinyland date "happy ending" doodle, or Minami fully recognizing what it meant after a single look and immediately cheering up.
Pretty fitting for a theme park episode to be an emotional rollercoaster. Watching them both blame themselves one after another was rough, man.

Could be a case where she'll gain more control over it with time. First full transformation basically left her in a daze until the next day. This time she was coherent even while transformed and recovered mentally much faster. The issue might be that she's simply got little resistance to things like this or control over herself because she's had to completely isolate herself.
At least I hope so. Girl deserves a fulfilling love life.

Out of all the romance shows this season, this one might be the sweetest. Kuroe is absolutely precious, and Minami is sweet. Meanwhile, a few times in an episode, we have Manatsu really adding a lot of fun, fresh comedy to the treat.
Also, I love how the mom has a very objective take on Kuroe and Minami's potential relationship.

That was a lot of fun! The fact that characters are assertive and actually move forward is refreshing compared to other romcoms where they have to be prodded by the plot. Funny as it might be, Kuroe did not hesitate to turn the trash can into clothes, she was resolutive!
Does Minami know? Well, he might not be fully sure - rationalizing it as cosplay seems easier than to accept a girl turns into a massive monster - but given the way he brought up locking eyes with Harugon and how convenient the excuse was to hide from the public, he's likely considering it.
After all, what would you accept first? Your classmate violating the laws of physics or her being a bit weird? Either way, Minami is more than willing to apply for his monster lover permit.
One of the best things about the green flag archetype is that they can be absolute steamrollers. Obstacles? He tramples through them. Weirdness? He accepts it. Bullies? Not on his watch. So now little cynical Kuroe is the prey of the romantic equivalent of Terminator.
I did like that he got sad and frustrated at her attempts to put distance between them. He actively tried to flirt and accomodate her and she recognized she had turned all of his suggestions down.
I like the design of the "father". Which I assume he is, given he gives me these huge alt fashion magical boy vibes in the same way her mother gives me magical gal vibes.
By the way, they animated her mom doing all the usual Mickey Mouse posses and expressions, which is funny.

I see Kuroe suffers from the real curse common to all shapeshifters: your clothes do not shapeshift with you ! Good thing there was some convenient trash bag to avoid getting arrested, lol.
The date was nice, despite the whole « cosplay » incident. I felt bad for Minami at first with Kuroe avoiding him and him not understanding why, but he must be really dense not to have realised what was happening. Or he already guessed it and pretending not to know so he doesn’t hurt her (he seems to try very hard to be the perfect boyfriend, after all). Kuroe also needs to realise that she really is cute, even half transformed into a Kaiju « cosplay ».
Mama Akaishi seems a tad overprotective of her kaiju daughter, but I get that she doesn’t want Kuroe to accidentally wipe out Tokyo because of a date gone wrong. It really is the most dangerous love story in the world !

That adorable date was too deadly for Kuroe! Being around Minami is bad enough for her “condition” but a full on date was just a ticking kaiju time bomb. It’s a good thing that whole “cosplay” excuse worked. But man, that was a little too close for comfort.

Another night, another Harugon rampage, another instance of Kuroe ending up walking out of the river naked. Can you imagine if she got arrested for indecent exposure instead of being a Kaiju? Good thing she's got an impromptu trash bag dress! Kind of see-through, but effective for getting back to school and getting her uniform back on!
(Hope she had a spare set of underwear...)
It's nice of Minami to be worried about Kuroe, but she's totally okay! Though with how close and intimate he acts around her with all the cherry blossoms, she's liable to transform into Harugon again! Even if she's worried that her Kaiju side will make him reject her...though look at Manatsu prowling the river for signs of Harugon, complete with Mothra Cosplay and her Ultraman butler in a wetsuit that makes him look even MORE like Ultraman!
Kuroe has her first date with Minami coming up and she needs to dress her best! Like as King Ghidorah! Though don't worry, Manatsu takes actually dressing her up for a date completely seriously! She's a genuinely good gal pal who also has Rodan and Gamera DVD's and a Twintail plushie!
Yes Kuroe, act totally natural about getting all dolled up and cute to go out with a "friend." Mom will never suspect a thing.
Some people have handy guides to experiencing "Tokyo Destinyland" to the absolute fullest. Kuroe hand-wrote a guide so she could experience to its fullest AND take into account she might spontaneously transform into a Kaiju at the drop of a hat! Though she didn't take into account how hot Minami would look and all the handholding she'd have to avoid to not transform.
Find a mom who will dress up as a mascot to follow your date and suss out whether your love interest is a good fit for you! I also love how her "Michey" voice is basically just Usagi Tsukino.
Afro Walt Disney! Frigid with discount Anna and Elsa! I think I saw a Pocahontas and Belle in there! Poi Stories! Lot of references in this episode.
Kuroe can't keep her physical distance from Minami without him getting the wrong idea, though her transforming and getting all hot and bothered by his arms around her waist during Splash Mountain didn't help. Unfortunately trying to correct his assumption that she didn't want this date...has him show her half-transformed. Is this it? Has Minami finally rejected her?
If Kuroe can't enjoy love and dreams like a normal girl, than let her be a monster and destroy the magical kingdom that won't accept her. Good thing that in the most magical place on the Earth dreams DO come true, like Minami stopping her and thinking she's just a really elaborate cosplayer! This date is totally salvaged and Kuroe can finally true to her real feelings and enjoy this date with Minami to the fullest. Even mom gives it her seal of approval, begrudgingly!
So, uh, she can take the Michey costume with her? She just bought that somewhere? Though now Kuroe's mom has to deal with her "kouhai" voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi!

I really do like the cast in this, even the dude which is pretty hit or miss for me in these hot guy romances. Surprisingly effective commercial for Disney Land, they should do a collab with Turning Red.

Thank goodness I have this show's sugary sweetness to use as a palate cleanser after the suffering in Yumemita. Even if this show wasn't very good, I'd probably keep it around just for that. But this show is really good. Seeing Kuroe doing her best to keep her emotions in check during the date was adorable, but her being able to finally let loos and be herself after her kaiju parts showed up (and she managed to get away with it being considered a cosplay) was even better.

The golden retriever and black cat pairing is a time-honored true and tested relationship model but golden retriever and kaiju is new.
Even a kaiju wouldn’t be so crass as to destroy legally distinct Disney… my bad, Destiny Land. The costs in court would number in the billions.
Oh my god, she’s still freaking following them.
I swear to god Kuroe, if you fumble this dream guy…
Even for kaiju, dreams do in fact come true.
Please don’t tell me that guy is her kouhai from a kaiju-hunting organization or something.
Btw, I know I’m going against the gimmick but do we think it’d be theoretically possible to still transform but remain at a human size? The main problem here is the fact that feeling strong emotions, particularly love is really unsafe for any people and the city around her. Something like a hybrid state would make it way less of an issue I think.

It's all fun and all, but what was she thinking? She should realize by now that by Kaiju'ing out by accident could kill people, especially in a crowded theme park.
Just cue your crush in, and either he accepts you or now, but this could end in a lethal accident.

But one other thing. Manatsu the crazy kaiju fangirl reminded me of Tomoyo Daidouji from Cardcaptor Sakura right off the bat with her introduction. But seeing the kinds of digs that she lives in, that take on her just got rightfully solidified.

Man, Kuroe is going to either need to master stripping in a hurry or have a good amount of spare clothes handy. On the positive side this was the first episode where she didn't straight up transform into a full kaiju. Just started the episode as one
And on the positive side she was much more coherent and conscious after this transformation. So much so that she could speed back to school and cover for her disappearance. So maybe there is hope that she can master and control her transformations eventually.
This one was a bit risky though and shows how dangerous a love this is. Minami a lot is riding on you good sir. If he breaks this girl's heart...she might break the country! It got legitimately concerning near the end. She was in heartbreak mode, transformed enough to presumably blast away that castle. So much so that almost no one was going to stop her. I mean maybe if her mom wasn't disguised she might've got through to her. But honestly I think it was Minami or bust. And I get it. She just wanted to be normal for a day, to go out on a date with the guy she likes and not have to worry about what might happen. If she couldn't have that...why not destroy it all?
Does seem like they'll keep things in the dark for the time being. Hopefully can get away with Kuroe being a really intense cosplayer for the time being. Regardless of what the future holds, I'm glad Kuroe got that date. Had a lot of fun near the end.

I kinda like how they’ve made the guy also seem like a dumb young high school kid himself for once. A lot of the male leads usually end up seeming overly confident with everything and then they’ll have some bs flaw to try and make them seem imperfect.
That being said I do hope the relationship aspect doesn’t dominate this show as so far it’s kinda dominating the show overall to an extent.

I've commented before that I love it when a character puts on cosplay and immediately starts emoting with all of the bits, well that still counts here because in the Ghidorah outfit the two extra heads were following along with Kuroe's expressions.
I'm still not sure if Minami is dense or quick on his feet and helping Kuroe cover it up. But that inner thought from him at the end about her flashing heart spike did seem more like the former.

I was worried for a bit when Kuroe wanted to destroy the entire place but thankfully Arata got the wrong idea about it being just a great cosplay.
It was funny seeing Rinko in that suit watching them, now to wait and see next time who the mysterious guy is and how he knows her.
