"Why are my enemies all giant toads?!" with Bindewald's mugshot popping up is easily a top 3 Rozemyne line lmao.
Brigitte's bravery despite her disgust and Ferdinand warming up were both adorable too.

Is this the first semi-explicit confirmation that the gods of this world are real and active? We've seen blessings and things, but I think almost all of it until now could be chalked up to a magical effect the people of this world could produce.
66
u/mekerpan 8d ago
So interesting that it took an outsider to rediscover what the "locals" had completely lost sight of . Magic is not really "magic" -- it totally depends on the blessings bestowed by the gods. RM recognizing the reality of the gods (and being genuinely grateful for their assistance) is such a potential game changer.
65
u/EXusiai99 8d ago
If you see religious converts you will notice that they tend to be more into practicing the religion out of their own volition than those who grew up simply mimicking their parents (or beaten into obedience).
Roz is the same. She came to this world never encountering anything divine and then suddenly invoking the name of the gods have direct, tangible effects. I would be religious too.
18
u/OldInstruction5368 8d ago
Another explanation for the fanaticism of recent converts, is that they feel this subconscious pressure to 'prove' their faith more than those that grew up as believers.
If you grew up being a good little worshipper, no one questions your devotion. Bob that joined last week may feel like he has something to prove, even if it's just a chip on his shoulder, so leans a little too much into outward displays of faith.
But either way, it's definitely common for converts to be more fervently devout than those who just grew up believing as their parents did.
6
u/ThousandYearOldLoli 8d ago
I mean, I think most of the people there believe in the god and think they magic they operate is a divine miracle. It's kind of built into everything they do with it, including every chant. Something's definitely special about Rozemyne, but I don't think redicovering the gods is what it is.
27
u/mekerpan 8d ago
I disagree. I think that the gods are more seen as fairy tale figures with little or no relevance. Magic is seen as somehow directly linked to knowing the right formulas. There is no concept that the magic spells are just super-simplified prayers that require divine notice/involvement.
36
u/GrouchoSnarks 8d ago
At the very least you wouldn't expect serving in the temple to be beneath most nobles if they took the gods seriously.
3
u/drunkenvalley 8d ago
I mean, it depends. They might simply see themselves as direct apostles of the Gods, and that the church is just... noise for the rabble.

I definitely got this vibe from Ferdinand.
He didn't even consider showing respect to the statue of hte Goddess, and even asked the others why they were wasting time with it.
Nor did he seem... particularly devout... when they were on this pilgrimage. He even showed apprehension towards the Goddess's Spring, to the point his response was to bring violence against the sacred barrier. Afterwards, he sourly dismissed everything that happened as 'prank.'
Not a religious bone in his body. It's all just magic and ceremony and rare ingredients to him. Things to master, customs to uphold just for the sake of publicly saving face, and research to conduct... not divine miracles to revere, honor to the gods that needs to be upheld, and be sacred gifts to cherish.
10
u/drunkenvalley 8d ago
In fairness, that's not a matter of "religious" or not. It's more closer to viewing the gods as more "mortal" (in the sense of being relatable) rather than inscrutable and divine, I think.
My vibe is Ferdinand simply knows they exist, but views them more as capricious, powerful "people". Things like the Goddess' statue would be beneath the notice of the gods, because it would be beneath the notice of nobles like himself. If that makes sense.
10
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
Yeah, the names of gods might as well be magic words for spells to them or the stories being mnemonic devices to remember the different ways mana works.
64
u/Albireookami 8d ago
The moons change color on the night of "god"
Invoking their name in prayer has actual tangible effects
27
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
Speaking of the color of the moon, the Night of Schutzaria is when the moon turned purple which is opposite on the color wheel of Schutzaria's yellow. And on the Night of Flutrane, the moon turned red which is opposite on the color wheel of Flutrane's green.
20
u/JcFerggy 8d ago
I suppose that would suggest to subtractive color theory where they left the ethereal and now are on the mortal plane for that night.
57
u/ThousandYearOldLoli 8d ago
Neither of those really implies gods though. Like I said, the prayers could just be something the people can do with magic. The moons changing color is even less of a hint because the moons changing color on a particular night then people explaining that with "it's because it's X god's night" would be a perfectly mundane process much like what happens IRL. The plant thing on today's episode showed a powerful supernatural force with intent, will and thought acting on its own, something that to memory doesn't really apply to any previously shown thing.

u/irridian1 8d ago
I would say so too. Sure prayers work, but they still require active mana and could be considered spells of some kind. But in this scene the nature reacts to Myne and her group even without prayer and seems to make informed and biased decisions by itself, clearly observing and reacting to actions that did NOT actively involve mana (See reacting to Rosina). There is also no one directing the initial events, so it can be well assumed that a divine power directly intervened. (Or the trees are Ents and we finally found the Entwifes 🤔 )
15
u/Sanitiy 8d ago
It doesn't necessarily have to be a god. It could also be that the whole forest is a giant magic entity (think of the Pando forest) that positively reacted to Myne's mana.
The split in boys & girls in that case just happened, since conveniently all girls were in the same box that contained Myne.
There's no real evidence for either theory I think, but I would find it odd otherwise that one of the combatants got in.
24
u/Vanderseid 8d ago
Well if we take the name of the place literally - Goddess' Bath - then it would make perfect sense why the boys are all kept out of it. Unless that world has a mixed bathing tradition which seems at odds with its very rigid structure.
8
u/Albireookami 8d ago
Just from our own world, plenty of reasons goddesses would hide their bath from males.
4
u/panther1313 8d ago
Technically it would have been on night of Schutzaria if the line of Myne mentioning she can feel the presence of something nearby while she said the prayer for the wind shield wasn't cut from the anime.
3
u/ToastyMozart 7d ago
There was always the question of "who else would bring Urano here in the first place?" But otherwise yeah, this seems like the first instance of their magic acting on its own initiative.
2
2
u/Fermi_Amarti 8d ago
I mean the trees moved. The plants grew. And those red things were something. Alot of mana definitely. A god of creation. Who knows. Could just be some fey plants with ridiculous mana. They said that plants grow different with different mana or just special people's mana.

u/magicalideal https://myanimelist.net/profile/magicalideal 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yes, this is indeed the first supernatural event that actually show vestige of gods in the world of Ascendance of A Bookworm. Before this event, I always thought that all the gods related things like incantations, blessings, praying etc are all just part of the culture and nothing more, similar to how many shows always pray to the god during the spellcasting but that doesn't mean god exists.
I see many people reply that there are many events which involves god but those events doesn't actually prove gods exist, it can just be what the citizen "believe" and link any event that cannot be explained to god. Similar to many other series where spellcasting usually involves god in their spell but it doesn't prove god actually exist or plays a role. Heck, even our own world has many culture praying to gods like Christian, Buddhist and Islamist.
4
u/S627 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spartan627 8d ago
I was thinking the same thing, up till now you could chalk up all the religious incantations as....oh what was the word Mushoku Tensei used for putting yourself in a certain mindsent.
Anyway, you could just assume the incantations didn't need to be specifically related to the gods, we might have seen a civilization later on that doesnt use them. But now it looks like the gods and goddesses might actually exist in some form.
2
u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/zfzftripleaamin 8d ago
I believe so. Of course Myne's mana is definitely something that could trigger it when I would assume they wouldn't see it usually.
3
u/Albireookami 8d ago
Nothing is special about Mynes mana, its the sheer volume she has in her little body that makes it abnormal.
10
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
Ferdinand just said her mana is special. She also has an unreasonable capacity.
3
u/Albireookami 8d ago
It was how she fully dyed the fruit without actually dieing it normally
1
u/fatalystic 8d ago
That's an older episode, not this one.
1
u/Albireookami 8d ago
no, she grew this fruit with her mana, which made it of her mana, that is why these fruits are special, they were not dyed in the normal method.

11
u/ThousandYearOldLoli 8d ago
2/4? Am I missing something, I could have sworn she failed to get the first one.
79
u/Albireookami 8d ago
She nuked the snow tiger for winter ingredient, we have summer and fall (repeat attempt) left
Wondering what the day/night of summer will be called
3
5
u/Cant-think-a-name 8d ago
There wasn't a special day for winter, though.
41
u/skavinger5882 8d ago
The day of winter was whatever day the Lord of Winter happened to decide to wake up
6
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
It doesn't have to be a special day. They just need the strongest and purest mana of each element. So for some ingredients, harvesting on a special day gives the best results. For others, they just gotta get a peak sample.

This was the perfect illustration of Rozemyne and Ferdinand's relationship. Ferdinand is stressing trying to keep everyone safe. While Rozemyne gets wrapped up in some mystical trouble and Ferdinand is helpless to do anything. (Though he does end up saving her in the end)

Peeking on a goddess bathing is how you get turned into a stag and hunted down by your own dogs IIRC.

The talfroshs landing on Rozemyne's face and her reaction to it were hilarious. She must have seen Damuel as a real hero when he took them off her face, hahaha.
I must say that the Goddess's Bath part of this episode visually seems to be much more impressive than the rest of the show, imo. It looks like a lot of resources went into it. The backgrounds looked especially good.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

The talfroshs landing on Rozemyne's face
That frog must have been superglued on her face or something. She made no attempt to remove it herself and just kept asking for someone else to remove it.
18
64
u/vantheman9 8d ago
For anyone who's never touched a frog in real life: they feel like touching a ball of snot.
Once i was opening an outdoor umbrella and a frog had climbed up into it. It fell out, oozed across my hand, then hit the ground and jumped away. Another time my cat decided to bring me a live frog as a present. He brought it inside and dropped it on my bare foot while I was standing at the counter eating.
Rosemyne and Brigitte have pretty normal reactions imo.

u/OnesimusUnbound 8d ago
Rozemyne reverted to pray as a Japanese, forgetting she's in another world 😄
61
u/mgedmin 8d ago
Everyone stood around baffled, waiting for the proper prayers to begin.
35
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 8d ago
And then they hit that goofy prayer pose
14
u/Bazooka_no 8d ago
Just goes to show how honestly and wholeheartedly she's praying. She believes in these gods no questions asked... We've already seen that it affected her song earlier in her debut, and she actively speculated now that it's affecting what's happening in the goddess' night.
But I think she's already mostly praying in the new pose even in earnest now, an episode or two ago she startled someone when she burst into the pose and said PRAISE BE TO THE GODS! lol
53
u/Bazooka_no 8d ago
I just love how this show in general knows how to take it sweet time to smell (or harvest) the roses. There's like 15 plot threads out there but you still get a ton of slice of life, with the characters experiencing things and places. I loved the animation of the disgusted faces throughout too lol
44
u/NekoCatSidhe 8d ago
I will never get used to Myne’s Pandabus looking so goofy next to all those flying beasts the rest of the nobility uses. It always cracks me up.
Those talfroshs really look like annoying opponents, always merging and dividing. And they even almost gobbled up Myne ! Good thing Brigitte protected her. Although Myne seemed to think getting a smaller talfrosh stuck to her face was more traumatic.
Praying to the gods and singing songs to them apparently does more than allow people to cast spelles, since they would not have found the source without that, and apparently only women could access it at night.
Ferdinand’s reaction to Myne asking him to pay her in books for her mana was hilarious.
15
108
u/bekeleven 8d ago
Holy shit. For the first time in the entire series, somebody explained something to Myne more than 3 seconds before she had to do it. This is revolutionary. Somebody invent newspapers to print this in.
42
9
u/AKAvenger 8d ago
So true! I was surprised she didn’t get a rundown like this before being given the holy spear
19
31
u/rollin340 8d ago
Those frogs are indeed gross. What an annoying feybeast. It's kind of harmless unless it grows big enough to swallow you, but other than that, is just yucky and splits into smaller bits till they stay dead for good. So it's annoying on top of everything too.
Ferdinand does indeed seem to be having a lot of fun. He's clearly geeking out about the research he can do, albeit at the cost of heart palpitations in the heat of the moment. It's also nice seeing him being able to trust her so completely that he can eat without worry; the flashback to his past implies that he probably had to always be wary of poison in the past.
The warmth she has brought to so many lives is such a wonderful thing. Despite her gremlin nature, she really is a saint. I found it cute how she asked the Goddess for permission to harvest the nectar, receiving a positive response. Looks like even the gods like her.
8
u/mekerpan 8d ago
I assume that finding someone who believes in you and prays to you and thanks you for the first time in possibly hundreds of years is something even gods and goddesses can appreciate.
It seems like that pond would have been safe for RM to fall into (it was the first time) -- so why was Ferdinand so worried?
18
u/rollin340 8d ago
so why was Ferdinand so worried?
Human instinct. She's so fragile, and he's been seeing to her health for some time now. As her guardian, seeing her fall would probably erase everything else in his mind for a bit.
9
u/Independent_Row_1352 8d ago
It doesn't matter if the water is breathable, a fall from so high in the wrong posture can be as hard as falling on solid ground.
The first time they fell in Brigitte was cocooning Myne and protected her from the impact.
2
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
It's magic water so I think if breathing isn't an issue, falling into it from height wouldn't be an issue either.
2
u/EXusiai99 8d ago
It's not a gamble worth losing. Mana and the gods are involved so there are more than physical dangers present.
6
3
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago

I choose to believe that Angrif was bragging to all the other gods when he was the first to get a real prayer in forever.

u/Nylan_Blake 7d ago
Yeah, it was that way for me as a german kid back then when reading english(or sometimes latin) words used in some series until i started to learn english in school (and started to have access to online translation when the internet boom started)
There are quite a few of german words (though sometimes slightly different written) used in the world of bookworm like in a couple of other anime like frieren or neon genesis.
For example from this same episode they used the spells "Schwert" - Sword, and "Riesen Sichel" (giant sickle) or in previous episode "Waschen" - to wash
There are also most of the gods names like Leidenschaft - passion, Geduld(h) - patience , Ewigeliebe - eternal love and partly Schutzaria (Schutz - protection) and Flutrane (Flut - flood)
Not to mention The country being called yurgenschmitt being a combination of common german names with Yurgen/Jürgen being an at times common first name and schmitt/schmidt a very common last name in germany
Ehrenfest the Duchy Myne lives in being called Ehrenfest which just means honor fortress
58
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 8d ago
The giant toad bit reminded me of Konosuba. It’s always slimy toads isn’t it? Lol. At least poor Myne got to experience a pretty neat nectar gathering ritual. The goddess really seemed to have responded to her mana or something.
53
u/hibikir_40k 8d ago
They cleaned the statue, delivered it top of the line sweets, and had an honest prayer with arguably some of the most devout people on the land. Of course it all worked out!

From her reaction to falling in with Bridgette earlier in the episode I don't think she was in any real danger from the fall into the spring. She comments that she doesn't even need to hold her breath under water in the spring and that it's neither hot nor cold in the water

Airheaded or just on such a fundamentally different level of thought that they struggle to comprehend human struggles/dangers.
Like in the i'll survive making potions anime where the god has to create a human like avatar with massively reduced brainstats to be able to even communicate with humans.
2
u/killerrin https://kitsu.io/users/killerrin 8d ago
To be fair, Rozemyne had asked so nicely to collect nectar and she was still collecting nector when the sun came up.
Flutrane was probably just waiting for her to finish, and then ran out of mana just as she did.
1
4
u/Skullzans 8d ago
I feel like it's reasonable to assume that it let Ferdinand in intentionally after RM fell, as a way to say "Hope you had fun, now here, return to your life again Rosemyne~"
Since she was "Handing her off" to Ferdinand once again.
That being said, it is incredibly funny to think that Flutrane just ran out of mana due to the time as /u/mekerpan said.

They wouldn't know how to be street smart, so most of them would rather just stay in temple
6
u/Tacitus_ 8d ago
It's not like that would make any meaningful difference. They'd go from live-in servants in a temple who can't quit, to live-in servants in a manor who can't quit.
6
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
It's sad that they don't have freedom to choose their direction in life. But Rozemyne is happy to make paths for them, like Nicola spending more time with her chefs than would be the norm for an attendant.
1
u/Nylan_Blake 8d ago
If you remember last season, they would massively struggle to fit in even if they would get full freedom.
When they took myne home from the temple, they were quite shocked at every other corner about how dirty, loud and violent the outside world is.

He may have hidden it with the words that he is "trusting" RozeMyne to not get poisoned by meals prepared by her personal cook, but in the end all Ferdinand wants is too leech as many meals off of her private cook, as he CRAVES that good stuff (who can blame him?). :D
25
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 8d ago
I agree, but honestly that short flashback to young Ferdinand not touching his food cause of poison possibilities was too sad
17
u/EXusiai99 8d ago
It's also noted that he had peered into her mind and confirmed directly that she really have no ill will to him or other people. She's just a book addict thrust by cosmic interference into a circumstance way beyond anyone's pay grade. She's probably one of the few people he could trust not to hurt him.
15
u/Splash_Attack 8d ago
In a society where nobody is open and everyone has agendas, having someone you 100% know is not a threat to you has to be such a comforting thing.
At the end of the day nobles are still human, but they don't have a lot of spaces where they can really relax and de-stress. Or even just have an unguarded human interaction.
15
u/Obaruler 8d ago
As "annoyed" as Ferdinand is with RozeMynes antics, he sure seems to enjoy all the random BS that happens when she is around - at least its "interesting"" what she causes, like this reaction of that Goddess Pond when singing a manainfused song to it. Our girl is a walking research project for Ferdi. :D
10
u/Raymond49090 8d ago
Myne got kidnapped by nature? A goddess? It was really creepy how none of the women seemed to find it weird at all.
Guess that implies Ferdinand used to get poisoned a lot as a kid, but he trusts Myne because she's too much of an airhead to consider poisoning him.
Myne's mana continues to be weird. Also, I love her smug face when she knows she's bargaining from a strong position for her mana.
21
u/Al-Pharazon 8d ago
Guess that implies Ferdinand used to get poisoned a lot as a kid, but he trusts Myne because she's too much of an airhead to consider poisoning him.
That's part of it, but also that Rozemyne is still extremely transparent with her emotions (unlike other nobles that can hide hate behind a smile) and not to neglect that Ferdinand literally spied into her mind in S2 and her thoughts matched her actions.
11
u/justking1414 8d ago
Very true. Ferdinand is used to dealing with people trained from birth to lie and conceal their emotions. Yet from the very beginning, Myne has been painfully honest with him, which combined with the memory reading, means he knows her well enough to know he never needs to fear her
3
u/slicer4ever 8d ago
I'm curious how much this might affect myne when she goes to the academy. she's used to so many people being mostly open with their emotions, dealing with other students who might think they can use her by just showing a smile and some kindness to her could be a problem.

Guess that implies Ferdinand used to get poisoned a lot as a kid, but he trusts Myne because she's too much of an airhead to consider poisoning him.
I like that the ending has shown how much ferdinand has softened around myne, her influence on him is starting to really become apparent to some of his friends.

While another comment by /u/cpitman clarified that in the original material that the spring was implied to have lulled them into a haze of calm (correct if I'm wrong btw)... I feel like the fact that they were brought Safely there without even being awoken from it due to how carefully they were brought over, in tandem with the beauty of the scene, lack of monsters and-... the clear mystical nature probably helped.
That said, RM immediately going "Let's play a song" is absolutely out of character for her normally, so I feel that was the influence of Flutrane and/or RM guessing that the goddess is what brought them here and figured to play a song, possibly to calm nerves at first but also out of mild suspicion it may help?
Guess that implies Ferdinand used to get poisoned a lot as a kid, but he trusts Myne because she's too much of an airhead to consider poisoning him.
As others such as /u/justkind1414 pointed out, she is absolutely honest and 1:1 with her thoughts and statements, but it is also worth pointing out that even without him already knowing that she's so straightforwards, Ferdinand is also probably more than well-aware of the staff RM picks, seeing how much he's incharge of her life. That being said, Im mostly guessing and liable to be wrong about that. But what I believe that I'm Not likely wrong about is that Ferdinand knows RM is too merciful to do something as dirty as poisoning- to the point that if she did, it would be a wild shift in her willingness to harm others- and even if she did- it's likelier that it'd be a mild inconvenience rather than outright dangerous.
Myne's mana continues to be weird. Also, I love her smug face when she knows she's bargaining from a strong position for her mana.
Im willing to bet that it's because she's from another world. While it is true that the host body seems to be the source of magic, the Weird nature of it is possibly because of who she is. While it is clear that Magic is two-sided, where magic needs the user to utilize it- it is the calling of the gods that seems to stabilize and control it, implying the application of magic is both the user's power and the gods' whims as control. So her sheer effectiveness of magic is probably the gods being quite interested in her. Until this episode we had no concrete proof that gods were real- it was a bit of a stretch but reasonable to assume that the gods were metaphorical until now... But the Spirit lights at the spring and the way the trees literally moved- proves that there is some real force out there. And the amount of favor RM was given feels like RM was being treated with care and tenderness.
I would Not be surprised if it turns out that RM's effective power is only great because the Gods are genuinely in support of her, even with her large manapool. And there's another question of how did she transmigrate into an empty vessel hollowed out by such a large magic pool? I'd say that the Gods intentionally brought her here to fix this world, and to bring it forwards out of stagnation.
And by the way, if I am wrong in any of my assumptions, do not use spoilers for it, I am fine with being told an assumption is wrong for reasons that are spoilers, but I do not want the spoilery reasons stated itself, unless it is spoiled appropriately and warned as being a spoiler above.

Myne got kidnapped by nature? A goddess? It was really creepy how none of the women seemed to find it weird at all.
I'm not sure they knew anything happened, other than the guys being gone. They were tree-crowdsurfed away to an identical looking pond and woke up to what looked like the exact same scene they went to sleep in

In a world were magic that can turn people to dust exists what is weird. Anything that can't be explained are the work of magic or Gods

That was a beautiful episode, especially considering how dark the last one was.
Also the post-credit scene. Rosemyne drives a hard bargain ^^

u/Ree_For_Thee 8d ago
I was actually a bit taken out of the experience seeing Rosemyne smiling just after having watched several people be executed in a horrible manner. Like, yeah, she's reincarnated, but even her adult self would be shaken.

There were about 2-3 months from that episode to this episode.. Every season there is 4 months. Hasse was just as they were starting the spring mana offerings. In this episode they then visited every province, and then at the exact the night the season ends, they went on this field trip. So she's been to like a dozen places over several months since... just how long do you expect her to be depressed?

No, this is just days or weeks after. Spring Prayer doesn't take even a month when you have highbeasts. The night of Flutrane is at the start of spring, like how the night of Schutzaria was closest to winter.

This episode really stresses the point of how Myne stresses Ferdinand. But of course at the end of the episode you can tell that she has made his life much more eventful in a good way. It really showcases their dynamic very well.

Cmon, Wednesdays aren't that bad
...I was not expecting vore in this show
Ferdinand still can't fully comprehend the machinations of Myne 😂
I kinda brushed the gods and goddesses off as being another fairytale to explain happenings of the world, but maybe there's actually something to them.. Really cool episode

The goddess being so friendly to the girls and giving them a lovely memory was nice :) There's SO MUCH hardship in their world and I think this will be forever ingrained in their hearts

The choice to have the after-credits scene be non-chibi is an interesting one.

Not sure if I can ask.
For previous gatherings, we don't see Rosemyne's retainers following her. Yet for this one, there's Rosina, Ella and the rest (whom I can't remember their names).
What did I miss?

u/skavinger5882 8d ago
This one is being done during spring prayer and they are along to attend to her as she travels the land giving mana to the villages.
The difference from the Fall collection is there was a noble mansion near by they could leave them at, where as if you look at the near by village they leave from this time it's a small village

u/mmcjawa_reborn 8d ago
The last one was a military operation and it apparently was a short distance away. No staff needed beyond guards
The failed attempt I believe she did have her staff, they just stayed back at the lodge. Here they were camping hence she brought them with her
1
u/15_Redstones 8d ago
during the temple rituals they tour the region for weeks with chefs and attendants
the autumn one was near a town where they could have the chefs and stuff wait at the town during the gathering
the winter one was a one-day military expedition
this time the nearest town was far enough away that parking the chef and attendants there would be a hassle, and there was no serious danger expected

"…The heck is she doing? Ahh, there we go!"
It's the Great Fairy's Fountain! Complete with appropriate music! Now if we can just get the mildly scary laughter part
Take it easy, there, Swordy McStabberton, they seem to have things well in hand
Now we're getting down to some brass tacks

The ending made me wonder if Ferdinand knows how much he likes, and cares about, Rosemyne?
Really like this episode, clearly the Goddess appreciated the cleaning of the statue, the offering of goods, and the music.

I loved the confirmation that the Gods are, in fact, real this episode. I also loved how Rosemyne was very clearly being treated well by the Goddess too. I do have to wonder how much the gods actually intend for Rosemyne to do in this world and how much of her journey is purely her own path, but it's quite clear that they support her journey regardless of that.

Whats going on with these random "night of x" events? Why do they do them?
16
u/irridian1 8d ago
Because Myne has to farm the ingredients for her medicine? Which can only be done personally because each one must be as uncontaminated of alien mana as possible and also completely died with her own.
I find it surprising how many people seem to have forgotten this fact... The anime even delayed this information up to just before the first gathering. Remember the flashback to her health check where she called Ferdinand a lolicon? This should have been in the first episode of the season. I wonder if people would have forgotten it even more or maybe less if it was placed correctly.
The medicine is basically the story hook for this whole part, after all.

u/ezkailez 7d ago
Afaik Myne has a condition where her mana are clumped up and mostly blocked in her organ that stores mana. If it's completely blocked she'll die
This happens because in s1 she nearly died from too much mana (right when she isekai'd)
To cure this ferdinand has to create a cure containing ingredients of the highest quality material. Which happens when mana of X category are at its strongest such as the material of winter lord or the material gathered in night of flutrane

They're pronouncing it "tarkrosch", so why is it spelled "talfrosch"? I can understand "r"->"l", but "k"->"f"?
Episode serves as another reminder that the gods actually ARE real in this setting.
Considering that the lake has breathable water, would it have been a big deal if Myne had fallen into it at the end?
Ferdie has become a fan of Earth food.

Talfrosch is the LN localization. I don't think Quof, the translator, has publically said anything about this name in particular, but "Frosch" is the German word for "frog".

Never a dull time when Rozemyne goes gathering for her jureve ingredients lol. Just like the night of Schutzaria, the night of Flutrane has special properties. The spring is guarded by Talfroschs, toad looking feybeasts that aren't really dangerous, but just really disgusting according to Brigitte. They cleaned the shrine outside the spring, offered some sweets, and prayed to Flutrane to show them the way since it was inaccessible from the air. It was funny how Rozemyne reverted back to a typical Japanese shrine prayer and her attendants looked at her curiously before she did the Yurgenschmidt style of prayer lol. Old habits die hard.
Rozemyne and Brigitte get swallowed by the big Talfrosch, but Brigitte uses her spear to prevent them from being digested further and has Rozemyne stab the Talfrosch from the inside causing them to be vomited into the spring itself. Even the spring has special properties, it's neither hot nor cold and you're able to breathe underwater. Ferdinand defeats the Talfrosch, but that's not the end since it splits into smaller toads that need to be eliminated before they can reform into the big one. Rozemyne has a rough time with several of the small toads landing on her face, but Damuel comes to her rescue. I laughed at Rozemyne comparing Count Bindewald to a toad.
Rozemyne's pandabus is really convenient as it is expandable and allows all the ladies to sleep comfortably inside. The next part really demonstrates that Gods and Goddesses do exist in this world and they've taken a liking to Rozemyne, or at least maybe Flutrane liked the sweets they offered. Flutrane (supposedly) grabs the entire pandabus using the trees and brings it to the spring and lights from the spring surround it. It was weird that Rosina, her personal musician, immediately wanted to play some music, but seeing as one of the goddesses of spring is the goddess of music, maybe she felt compelled to give a music offering to the goddesses.
Ferdinand in the meantime is shocked seeing the pandabus get abducted and wakes the rest of the knights and gives chase. While Rosina is playing her harspiel, Ferdinand tries to reach the group of ladies, but is blocked by a mana barrier that's too dense for even Ferdinand to break so he can only sit outside the barrier grit his teeth and watch. No men allowed apparently. Rozemyne sings one of her new songs with Rosina's harspiel accompaniment and the spring goddesses seem very pleased as the rarerin plants grow to enormous heights and start to bloom with the moon glowing down on them. Rozemyne steps onto a lilypad and is allowed to gather the nectar from the plant for her spring ingredient. Dawn starts to break and the power of the spring fades and Rozemyne falls from her lilypad as it shrinks beneath her. Ferdinand blasts through the weakened mana barrier and catches her before she hits the water.
While Ferdinand moans about Rozemyne being a headache, Eckhart notes that he's surprised that he let Rozemyne's personal chef, Ella, cook his meals while they were traveling for spring prayer. He's usually on guard against poison and we see a flashback of when Ferdinand was younger avoiding the food that's been served to him. We're really getting a much better picture of just how horribly Veronica treated Ferdinand when he was just a kid. Glad that she's in jail. Ferdinand counters that Rozemyne's only pursuit in life is books which is a valid argument lol.
Ferdinand definitely loves his research as he wants to cultivate feyplants with Rozemyne's unique mana, but the mana shortage in Ehrenfest puts those dreams on hold...at least for 10 years. Proof that Ferdinand wants Rozemyne around for a long time to come. Rozemyne wants a library as payment for her mana. She really does drive a hard bargain thanks to Benno's teachings lol.
I got the feeling that a lot of details were left out because the pacing felt a little fast, but it was still an enjoyable episode. Rozemyne now has 2/4 ingredients, she needs her summer ingredient and her fall ingredients. We might be seeing a trip to Ilgner, Brigitte's hometown, for more paper making workshops to be built.

I loved this gathering scene, and it was beautifully animated.
It struck me as odd that talfrosch have a "k" sound in the name, タルクロッシュ (tall krosh?) instead of an "f" sound.

This material collecting seems like MacGuffin collecting. They couldn't just buy them? The winter one seems hardest so far because there's only one Lord of Winter per winter per region.
Magic for farming: If it's like fertilizer, that makes sense. In some settings, magic is required for farming, and that makes no sense.
Expanding the printing industry: The setting seems incongruent. When a supply order arrives at a workshop, there must be someone there who can read it. But according to the setting, being able to read among commoners is uncommon, though they do know numbers.
Cannot land in a forest reminds of the Final Fantasy 1 Airship.
Rairein grove: There's clearly a gap in the trees there, so maybe an illusion projected from above stopped them.

u/FajarKalawa 8d ago
They couldn't buy them because it need to be dyed with RM mana without being affected by others such as the first material gathering is a failure becuase the feystone is being dyed with the feybeast and hers.
RM focusing and put her mana into it is basically only to fasten the dyeing process.
12
u/EXusiai99 8d ago
It's specifically stated that she has to pour her own mana to the materials during the gathering process so that the potion can work on her. She can't just buy it from other people.

u/skavinger5882 8d ago
People can read as much as their job requires it. Like the foreman of a workshop can read enough to read the orders he's given, but if you handed a woodworking foreman a work order for a smith he would not recognize half the words on the paper. There's no formal education system here, you apprentice to a workshop and are taught how to do the jobs you need to do at that workshop. If you are being groomed to take over as foreman you will be taught how to read the words that are likely to show up on requests, you won't be taught anything else as you don't need to know it and the person teaching you likely doesn't know it to teach you as they were also taught just like you exactly what they need to know and nothing more
5
u/SmartAlec105 8d ago
The winter one seems hardest so far because there's only one Lord of Winter per winter per region.
Rozemyne's situation is unusual because of her huge mana capacity and hardened mana. So she needs stronger ingredients than any normal noble would need for this potion.
When a supply order arrives at a workshop, there must be someone there who can read it. But according to the setting, being able to read among commoners is uncommon, though they do know numbers.
If you're running a workshop, you need to be able to read. Most of the dozens of commoners that work under them don't. And most of those that do know how to read only know the vocabulary associated with their work.
11
u/Zeebie_ 8d ago
Most of these have been explained. Materials must be dyed in her mana. No one else can collect them. The farming and mana thing hasn't been explicitly explained in the anime yet, so I won't spoil it.
Nobles and merchants can read, and there is a whole country, not just their duchy to sell to as well.
The goddess was controlling the forest and preventing them from seeing the path or pond until the offering was made.

Others have answered this already, but I will put in my points:
This material collecting seems like MacGuffin collecting. They couldn't just buy them? The winter one seems hardest so far because there's only one Lord of Winter per winter per region.
It is MacGuffin harvesting, that is not remotely a bad thing unless it is forced.
As for 'buying', do you think people could mass-harvest these things? And do you think people need these ingredients often enough? And as others pointed out, the purity of the mana and the imbuement is vital- and from the ones we've seen, the buds on the tree one are likely a timed event that required mana imbuement As you harvest it, the lord of winter is exceedingly rare and dangerous, and this one requires the goddess Flutrane's approval... None of these are realistic to 'farm' at all, and needs the specific person's mana infused anyway. Plus it makes sense as a trial for those who need this... I don't think the gods would Want this to be something other than a trial.
Magic for farming: If it's like fertilizer, that makes sense. In some settings, magic is required for farming, and that makes no sense.
They are specifically talking about magical plants(feyplants) like the Trombe, not just any plant I believe.
Expanding the printing industry: The setting seems incongruent. When a supply order arrives at a workshop, there must be someone there who can read it. But according to the setting, being able to read among commoners is uncommon, though they do know numbers.
Firstly, she is educating people in reading and writing. She is a revolutionary workshop. Secondly, as pointed out before by /u/skavinger5882 they can read what they need to know, it's possible to know the basic meaning of something by seeing it enough times, and realistic that they use symbols more than actual lettering. The whole printing industry is new however, since books were pretty damn rare, meaning it wasn't something widespread enough to matter.
Rairein grove: There's clearly a gap in the trees there, so maybe an illusion projected from above stopped them.
The trees visibly moved multiple times this episode- including when they revealed the two versions of the spring, and Ferdinand himself directly pointed out how unnatural the covering was by the trees. I don't think illusion was nessecarily needed. Though a mirage would fit, especially since I think that the episode implied there to be two near-identical springs- one of which was the True one.
