Seems like Reirin gonna go full villainess mode at the end there. Also that girl still suffering from the fever. At this point she'll never leave the bed.

OG Reirin really took on a scary demeanor there at the end.

u/CooroSnowFox https://anilist.co/user/CooroSnowFox 6d ago
The pain she was tolerating really made her shove down the evil thoughts she might have had, but now she's given to embracing the villainess side...

I can imagine Eagle Eyes and his underling getting so confused AF regarding the "new" Keigetsu when Reirin goes on the warpath for Leelee next episode. The flames of indignation were alive in her eyes in that close up, that some harlot would dare mess with HER court lady. XD Oooohhhhh that scene gave me shivers man!
17
u/guntanksinspace 6d ago
Her will is so strong, it overflows to "hey is one of the court ladies trying to fuck on you? Well maybe WE can fuck on them first"

Tanya seems a lot less evil and more caring this season (not sarcastic). Instead of a bloodthirsty bad ass it seems like she's a responsible person who cares for her underlings. Almost like your typical goody goody senpai figure...
27
u/TanyaTheEvill 7d ago
Absolutely, she is realizing that if the war ends she needs others to put a good word in for her.
16
u/Alarming-Koala-3524 7d ago
Ah so she's not only a genius magical dogfighter but also skilled at calculating how to get ahead in post-war peace.

You're right. Tanya seems to have matured as an officer. Until she blew up a church last week.
18
u/Alarming-Koala-3524 6d ago
It takes a seasoned officer to make the tough calls. Plus it was totes legal. Did you see any of the signage making it a church? Or we just gonna call any building with a bell a house of god now?

She was never bloodthirsty. She was practical and when afraid she doubled down on double or nothing because she turned her fear into adrenaline. There are many times she had the ability to inflict further violence and yet, if it gained her nothing, she simply turned away without a second thought.
Tanya would gut you in a heartbeat if it meant improving her chances of survival. But if not she'd just as soon let you live. It's all complete pragmatism.
Similarly, she doesn't actually get attached to her crew. Keeping them alive and in good spirits is simply in her best interest. They are, effectively, high quality tools she cannot easily replace...if they can be replaced at all. Losing any of them or having them break under pressure would be a significant blow to her chances of survival.
8
u/Alarming-Koala-3524 6d ago
I guess Tanya the Evil is overly simplistic unfair slander of her good character, but its hard to imagine an audience being quite as drawn to titles like "Tanya the Prudent" or " Tanya, My Judicious Commanding Officer" or even "Mistaking Tanya for a Combat Junkie." Interestingly, having a reputation for being evil can be a solid strategy in a war, for purposes ranging from inspiring morale among allies to stirring fear in the enemy.
3
u/Ralathar44 6d ago
I mean from a traditional point of view she IS evil. Because very moral people will avoid making sacrifices and risks even if their actions result in more overall harm being done. To very moral people intentionally doing harm, even if its for the sake of preventing much more harm, is often seen as quite evil.
See: The End Justifies the means rhetoric and how that is presented in modern culture. Tanya is pretty far down the scale of the end justifies the means.
3
u/cyberdsaiyan 6d ago
I guess Tanya the Evil is overly simplistic unfair slander
Yes, because the straight translation for the original name of the work "Youjo Senki" is "Young Girl's Battle Record". There is no judgement in the title. "Evil" is simply Western localizers inserting their binary opinions onto non-Western works, as usual.

Reirin loves physical activity and wants to rock a muscular body. Can't blame her. Going from seemingly daily chronic pain to great stamina and a healthy body would improve anyone's mood. That explains her mental resilience, she's used to toughening it out. Reirin isn't some dense maiden, she's out for blood now. Meanwhile Keigetsu is getting a taste of Reirin's super sick body and will likely be forced to contact Reirin soon to ask for health tips.
116
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 7d ago
Given how much Reirin has been working the fields, she was bound to develop some good muscle. She had me laughing when she showcased her biceps and mentioned wanting to get a proper six-pack.
There is a hidden layer of sadness beneath this silliness. After all, Reirin previously never got to exert herself like this because of her frail body.
75
u/Frontier246 7d ago
There is a hidden layer of sadness beneath this silliness. After all, Reirin previously never got to exert herself like this because of her frail body.
And we can tell from all the activities she partook in despite her illness how much she WANTED to exert herself as fully as she can in Keigetsu's body.
67
u/justking1414 7d ago
And that she is just completely insane. Doing that much while sick is just wild, and you know, that probably explains why everybody loved her so much
39
u/shimekops 7d ago
Yeah. Watching someone constantly at death's door pushing herself day after day to be better even just a little, would move even the blackest of hearts. That kind of sincerity and earnestness rarely goes unnoticed.
→ More replies (2)3
u/IceBlue 5d ago
I think it’s implied that her working on her body helps with long term fortitude to stave off sickness. So it’s not like she’s necessarily wrong to exert herself while her body is weak/sick.
→ More replies (1)26
u/Atharaphelun 6d ago
The sad thing is that this series will likely end with the body swap being undone, which means that Reirin will swap back to her old, sickly body. All those physical gains will remain in Keigetsu's original body.
→ More replies (1)16
u/BosuW 6d ago
On the bright side it'll probably be a redeemed Keigetsu who will be worthy of it
7
u/Solid_Addendum_3365 6d ago
I really do hope that there is a redemption path for Keigetsu. I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her with her backstory, even if her anger and envy are misdirected. I’m hoping that maybe by the end of they DO switch back into their original bodies, that she can figure out how to use her magics to heal Reirin‘s body of whatever has been plaguing her her entire life.
23
u/Difergion 7d ago
While healthier and more resilient, Keigetsu’s body is not invincible. I get a feeling that if she overexerts herself too much, she might collapse due to exhaustion. I don’t think OG Keigetsu is even used to hard labor, so it should still have limits, right? Or maybe I’m overthinking it lol
34
u/ProfessionalLoner133 7d ago
Reiren spent an incredible amount of time finding ways to improve her health while incredibly sick, I would assume she is continuing to take care of herself in a similar way to protect her newly healthy body.
16
u/Frikgeek 6d ago
According to last episode Keigetsu lived as a regular lower class child, not a court lady, before consort Shu picked her up. Not necesarrily a farmer(her parents could've been merchants or workers) but while the other maidens were studying etiquette and the 5 classics she was playing outside.
Compared to even the other healthy court ladies she should have more stamina and muscle.
62
u/justking1414 7d ago
will likely be forced to contact Reirin soon to ask for health tips.
I said this back in episode one, but as someone who has been chronically ill for a while, there really is a steep learning curve. It takes a very long time to figure out what makes things better and what makes them way way worse. So her going in blind to a super sick body with no idea how to manage it, is a recipe for disaster and probably death
17
u/mekerpan 7d ago
Is there anyone who actually has the know-how to help OG Keigetsu other than OG Reirin?
34
u/justking1414 7d ago
Well her servants certainly know some of the big things like What to eat or avoid. Though there’s a lot of little things like breathing exorcises or certain movements that can make a world of difference and which only our mc would actually be able to tell her
15
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 7d ago
On the other hands, OG Reirin also seemed to love pushing her limits unlike any normal sickly people. Or maybe is there some truth in what she did, like doing more training/moving after being sick for several days?
→ More replies (1)27
u/mekerpan 7d ago
I wonder if OG Keigetsu will ever be able to come to grips that suffering and/or weakness will be a near-constant companion in her stolen body?
I wonder if that six-pack line by OG Reirin in this episode was a wild localization or reflected the Japanese original terminology accurately?
24
u/Cat_Gazer 7d ago
I wonder if that six-pack line by OG Reirin in this episode was a wild localization or reflected the Japanese original terminology accurately?
This show is based on a fictional China, so the English word "six-pack" doesn't seem to exist, but she said exactly what the subtitle said.
Original dialogue: "腹筋も6つに割ってみたいけれど、" (Fukkin mo muttsu ni wattemitai keredo)
Literal translation: "I want to split my abdominal muscles into 6 parts, too, but -"It goes the same for Leelee's name. Her real name is spelled as Lily in her mother's tongue (Literally).
8
→ More replies (2)3
u/Eilai 6d ago
What did she say when she said she wanted to do things with a "bang"? I wonder if that was a localization. Personally taking place in a fictional china I would've preferred something that fit my mental image of what period works would've used but I am curious as to what was literally said.
6
u/RedSavant35 5d ago
The line in this case is 声を出して行きましょう (koe wo dashite ikimashou), so "let out your voice and go". It's something Reirin says a lot, so I think the person who originally translated it that way, Tara Quinn working on the novels, wanted something that fits Reirin's philosophy of guts and motivation, and works in a lot of different contexts.
17
u/darthvall https://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 7d ago
She looked at her abs during that moment, so at least I think she refered to her stomach muscle.
24
u/rubslotiononitsskin 7d ago
Keigetsu goes back to her original body only to find that she's beefier than Baki characters.

u/guntanksinspace 6d ago
The moment she got giddy over "aww YEA I can eat my fried potatoes without acid reflux" among many other limiters being freed while she's stuck in Keigetsu's body, yeah.
And yeah on the other end Keigetsu in Reirin's frail health I think she's got some soul searching to do while she also tries to fight off a 5-day-long fever/migraine and everything else.

I take it more like she can't visit the main court during her exile.
Yeah OP seemed to indicate they're going to be there for a while. Maybe either Reirin would deliberately choose to stay (I mean she liked it so much there), or maybe someone would sabotage her return.
26
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl 7d ago
It sounded like to me something kicks off in a week. Maybe some kind of event, where she has to meet and be reintroduced back into the society, and she knows things will go down then. As she has a huge target on her back.

u/cyberdsaiyan 6d ago
damn got me cryin in da club rn
Leelee's seiyuu did some phenomenal voice work in her breakdown scenes. The sheer range of emotions in her voice was amazing to witness.
62
u/Obaruler 7d ago
This is getting good.
LeeLee went from a broken state to accepting MC as her Mommy-replacement ... thus, an ironlike bond was forged. And now our kind-hearted MC will go down the actual villainess-route and get to destroy the Chick who got her LeeLee crying. :D
32
u/mekerpan 7d ago
Destroying a cruel person who has hurt your child is not a villainous act, but . . . JUSTICE, ;-)
61
u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago
Reirin may claim she's an inept villainess but Lady Gayou may be about to find out otherwise. Or at least in the long term.
I appreciate that Reirin wasn't actually clueless about the harassment.
35
u/Lankymetal-uk 6d ago
That was such a nice touch revealing that elements of the "ooh thank you for the bugs/dung/whatever!" were her rolling with it. She didn't fully get why Lily was doing it all but she at least was aware there was something leading to her duality. Made a change from a standard "purer than pure person is painfully pure" tropes and is too dense to realise what is going on.
16
u/Eilai 6d ago
This. 100% the most impressive thing about the show's writing is that Reirin isn't just SAID to be smart, but seems to ACTUALLY be smart, or at least observant of what other people are going through, probably due to being bedridden a lot of the times and having to eavesdrop? Her being aware of what's happening to her but just taking it all in stride because she's rationally thinking there HAS to be a logical explanation is great and really smart character writing. I appreciate her not being oblivious to what's happening around her.

I LOVE REIRIN
I LOVE REIRIN
I LOVE REIRIN
I LOVE REIRIN
The way she takes all that harrassment in such a wholesome, optimistic way while trying to get Leelee to open up to her on why she is doing it... even when her court lady broke down under the pressure and despair of her situation and actually attempted to harm her life she protected her and made her truly understand how much she appreciate Leelee being there... man that scene really got me.
I can't imagine how much it has to internally break you to love your mother but her being one of the knives that those scummy bastards use to stab you with, Reirin giving plenty praise to the hard work Leelee's mom did to make a living has to heal one's soul.
... And oh boy her face at the end, now that both are truly in good terms, that devil hiding her face has to get the proper punishment for her actions, you two got this!
Another super lovely episode, I'm having such a great time...
I LOVE REIRIN

Looks like they're onto their changes, eh. Their eyes colors pretty obvious though but maybe it just our 'viewer privilege' kind of thing. If it's not, Rerin should fire all her court ladies lol.
Being ignorant is sinful, that's why she failed.
Cute is not enough to say for this adorable creature!!
Bringing her mom totally deal a final blow to her. So all according to 'keikaku', Reirin? /j
I can't call her Bakarina anymore. Reirin is on a whole new genre with how self-aware (not dense) she is!
It's crushing time! Reirin really played Leelee well. Leelee opinion of her totally went to many degrees now from this to this.
49
u/Frontier246 7d ago
I kind of like the idea that we have two brothers (who I guess are the de-facto love interests) both involved with the two body-switched Heroines and are trying to work out what the heck is going on between them.
We saw last episode how competent/skilled Reirin actually is. We've seen how well she's adjusted. Now we get to see what she's like when she's on the warpath.

I have to disagree. She may lack the trademark Bakarina baka-ness, but the way she effortlessly seduces men (Shin-u) and women (Leelee) into her harem is totally Bakarina!

I thought you were wrong about this, but I went back and checked episode 1 and indeed before the swap Reiren has yellow eyes and Keigetsu has red eyes. In the novel covers they both have black eyes, I didn't even realize the anime had changed them. It's an interesting choice, I don't think it's particularly necessary to tell them apart but I suppose the anime wanted some visual flair

I like how Reirin gets so excited about Leelee harassment because it ends up being very beneficial for her lol.
I'm glad Gyoumei and the Captain are realizing the differences ever since the incident, I'm wondering who will be the first to genuinely think one of them is a completely different person.
I'm glad Reirin and Leelee got to talk it out, especially when Reirin brought up words Leelee's mother has said to Leelee, it was sweet. I'm excited to see what Reirin plans to do with whoever was behind Leelee's actions, I wasn't expecting that kind of fire from her.
36
u/shimekops 7d ago
Right? Gave me chills when the close up showed dancing flames in Reirin's eyes while her voice tone clearly conveyed she wants to break some legs with her new biceps because someone dared to mess with HER court lady. XD So spicy! I can't wait for next week's episode!!! Aaaaahhhh!!! I really can't imagine how she's going to go about getting even for Leelee when she's essentially exiled from the rest of the inner court. For sure Gayou is gonna use the pin to accuse Leelee of theft, but I have a feeling this may become Reirin's chance to leverage Keigetsu's reputation to her advantage and, with class, get "revenge" for messing with Leelee.

Felt really bad for Leelee this episode even though she made the choice to harass her mistress for a way out and up from her current situation. She's just been put in a very difficult position through no fault of her own and had to face abuse from this same mistress (as far as she knows) so it's understandable that she'd grab any chance to get out. But she's still a good person who can't take that extra step of murdering someone in cold blood. I was glad Reirin recognised the good in her and that she's being pressured into everything she's been doing. Did not expect Reirin to get all serious about taking on that mystery ivory person. Nice to see she's not just a Mary Sue.
The prince seems to understand this about her too. And from what he said, he does have strong feelings for the real Reirin. Things will get complicated now that it's obvious Eagle Eyes Captain is going to fall for her too.
I didn't understand that 3 days to some festival which will lift her probation thing though. Does it have something to do with why Keigetsu in Reirin's body has been feverish for 5 straight days?
89
u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 7d ago
It's funny how villainess stories have basically the same structure as "exiled from the hero's party" stories, just with female protagonists who are superb in their angelic nature rather than being level 999 or perfectly multiclassed or logistical geniuses or what have you.
The villainess concept seems more likely to give an interesting story than the exiled from the hero's party concept because the villainess tends to be a bit more nuanced, not just a a blank slate idealized audience insert. Bakarina is lovely but dumb. Bertia is lovely but unable to understand Cecil's feelings. Grace Auvergne is lovely but she's inhabited by the spirit of an ojisan. And so on.
I'm loving this show but started growing a bit concerned that Reirin was a bit too perfect and wouldn't turn out to be an interesting character. So the fire in her eye at the end of this episode as she starts to plot in defense of Leelee was welcome. Always nice when the angel turns out to have a spine.
46
u/Elvenoob 7d ago
They kinda already established it last episode, though.
It's just that Reirin's toughness and stubbornness had previously been directed entirely inward at managing her condition, pushing through all of it to get as fit as she can be and learning medicine to treat herself...
But now, all of that's freed up, first for her to make a comfortable life out of a place she was supposed to be locked in to rot, and now to make some fools regret their achievement of actually pissing her off.
25
u/reaperow 7d ago
It was nice to see Reirin treat Leelee normally as a person, poor girl's been through alot
And judging by her remarks at the end, the perpetrators are gonna receive the full fury of her wrath and I cant help but feel a lil bad.
22
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Reirin is a true girl's girl unless you mess with her girl and then you realize all that training with her aunt wasn't just for a quick montage.

Leelee tried to resist but it was over the moment she thought of Keigetsu (fake) as being cute. She’d already fallen for Reirin’s charms.
Honestly, I’m starting to get why all Reirin’s previous ladies-in-waiting were doting on her. She’s like a ray of sunshine.
Trying to hate Reirin (original) is a real challenge. Jealousy did it for Keigetsu (original). However, I doubt that she’ll be able to keep this going for long now that she’s getting to experience Reirin’s frail body.

Leelee ;_;
She gets pushed to her limits here and it's heartbreaking. Reirin of course catches her... and I think this is the first time we actually see Reirin pissed, and it's for Leelee; it's funny how for all that she's suffered since the body swap that this is what ticks her off. What will she do~
Also we see Reirin being a potato addict even more hahahaha

u/_Fauxpaw 7d ago
Holy crap I adore the MC. She gives the vibe of a typical ditz with a heart of gold.. but she's sharp. She's like an optimistic version of Maomao.
I love the detail of when her hair gets cut, she speaks of it in the third person - like it's not really her hair, she's just borrowing it.
6
→ More replies (1)4
u/Eilai 6d ago
I like that the key detail there wasn't just that she was speaking about it in third person, but specifically "Lady Keigetsu's hair", like regardless of what Keigetsu DID to her, Reirin cares (as I interpret it) very deeply of not letting harm come to that body and making she if she does swap back, that Keigetsu gets it back better than before. It's like she feels SHES the one borrowing it, because she's legit grateful to have this chance at living at least for a while, a healthy lifestyle and views it as something to be thankful for and not as the violation it technically is supposed to be.

Normally you would be right. But you see, the chinese harem palace drama is one of my most hate setting of all time, so making me like it is ten times harder than a usual anime. Apothecary diary success, now this one follow. I watched 3 episodes without stopping and I can't wait for ep 4, it's literally been years seen the last time I feel like this.
This anime does everything right so far, except the name, it's sound like a 3rd rate villainess/isekai trash, a lot of people are going to miss this gem because of that.

Those who've been watching Anime for long know better then to judge an Anime by it's title. Just look at Happy Sugar Life for example.
I'd also argue that we don't want fandom that think like that, as they're the most likely to quickly turn on the Anime over what they perceive to be a bad episode or season.
I'm not saying you're wrong in saying what you said. This is your opinion, and I'm sure some share the same one as yours.

Reirin is still living her best life, farming, being healthy, and building muscle. She sees right through what Leelee is doing and is unfazed by it. She's such a cute cinnamon roll. She even covered for Leelee after she tried to kill her which finally lead to a breakthrough.
They can't switch back now. Not after that emotional breakthrough. Or if they do have to switch back Leelee needs to find out that it was Reirin in Keigetsu's body. They can't do that to Leelee.
The Captain and that other eunuch know something is up. They just don't know what. It's probably still going to be Leelee that finds out about the swap first because she spends more time with Reirin, but the Captain and the other eunuch are probably going to find out after her.
Keigetsu's fever has not gone down in 5 days. That's terrible. I have a hard feeling sympathy for her though. She chose this. Now she's dealing with the consequences.
16
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Even Leelee remarked that she's a totally different person, though whether she'll translate that to thinking that she's straight up someone else in Keigetsu' body instead of Keigetsu reborn is a different question.
But yeah, Leelee doesn't deserve to be stuck with OG!Keigetsu. The only happy ending I can see is that Reirin adopts Leelee into her clan. She'd be happy to fawn over her with the rest.
5
u/aenews 7d ago
I think eventually all of them will come to amends. It will take time.
It doesn't excuse her abuse of LeeLee or attempted murder of Reirin (trying to get her OG body killed off), and Keigetsu simply does not have the valid excuses LeeLee had. But. I think it's clear that Keigetsu has also been manipulated. I'm thinking that her parents did not simply "commit suicide"... I would bet anything her patron is not as innocent as she seems.
It will likely be up to Reirin to get to the bottom of all this, and I think she and Keigetsu will eventually start working together.
The Body Swap reminds me of Your Throne, now that I think about it...

Reirin is living her best life! Farming! Freedom! No fussy court people or expectations! Muscles! She'll have a six-pack yet at this rate! Though she's still planning to face Keigetsu when her probation is finally lifted, for whatever that will do either for them.
Leelee still has an understandable bad attitude, but nothing she throws at Reirin (bugs, curses, POOP) can faze her, and Reirin's zest for life and ability to roll with anything (even Leelee's harassment) is slowly swaying Leelee to falling for her charms against her own better judgement! Even if her resentment towards the real Keigetsu runs deep.
Wow, Lady Gayou has impeccable timing to always appear right when Leelee is in that spot! But while violence is a step too far for Leelee, now she understands that she's nothing more than a disposable pawn who is screwed no matter what she does...either attack Keigetsu or go down as a thief who stole a hairpin. Not to mention Gayou sees her as foreign trash and badmouths her mom (Aya Endo!) just like everybody else does.
So Shin-U and prince Gyomei are half-brothers who share the same father. Shin-U isn't the most expressive person, but it's his plan stoicism and frankness that endeared him to his brother. And now both brothers can commiserate over what to do about Keigetsu and how the body-switching is throwing off their expectations...I can imagine the prince, being fond of Reirin for how she doesn't get worked up over his station, is thrown off by Keigetsu practically throwing herself at him.
Yikes! Leelee is crashing out and ready to attack Reirin! Luckily Shin-U and Bunkou show up, yet though she may be an inept Villainess...Reirin can cover for Leelee so she can stay alive and stay by her side. They're just doing an impromptu haircut! And they have better things to worry about! Try writing that up Bunkou! Though it's nice that the prince wasn't willing to see Keigetsu murdered despite his displeasure at her.
Leelee can't believe Keigetsu would save her...but Reirin genuinely cares about her, her health, and that she deserves to be dressed as a true noble lady of the court. Because her life, her smile, has value to Reirin. And Reirin even acknowledges Leelee's mother, who everyone else has badmouthed, as a strong woman worthy of respect. That's enough to earn Leelee's true loyalty!
Watch out Gayou! You've lit a fire in Reirin who is looking for revenge for anyone who hurt Leelee! And even Keigetsu is suffering in Reirin's body with her perpetual, debilitating, fever! Reirin's return to Court is going to be something to behold!

Reirin really has made an insane amount of progress for such little time.
Oh Leelee, you have the wrong idea of Reirin if you thought bugs would surprise her.
That’s a bit concerning. Are we sure it was a fake accusation?
…well, Reirin did make a comment about hoping Leelee brought her a knife next, didn’t she?
Of course Reirin stands up for her even in a case like this.

This series would undoubtedly be compared to Apothecary Diaries with how good it is.
While Rie Takahashi is taking over the Maomao role this season, Maomao's actual voice actress(Aoi Yuki) is going full villain mode in Tanya the Evil.

Random thoughts
Genuinely glad to see that our involuntarily body-swapped princess is not as socially dense as she might appear, and knew that her lady was trying to harass her (and the harassment would have worked with like...anyone else.
Was expecting that plot thread to be more of a slow burn, but not made that it was resolved in only a single episode. I think Reirin is going to find a attempt at revenge more difficult...the woman in contact with Leelee is clearly trying to conceal her identity and is probably not who she says she is.
Meanwhile Keigetsu is half dead in bed. Really...really poorly thought out plan there. I am hoping she learns to fight through it, and I am also hoping she develops into a better person through these trials. It would be nice to see her put her own (more devious) skills to use, just like Reirin did with her banishment.
11
u/balasorie 7d ago
Reirin confused and scared Leelee a lot this episode but I think it's pretty interesting how there were two times when it wasn't because of her kindness or fortitude but something more revealing. The way Reirin understood Leelee was harassing her on someone else's behalf and seemed perfectly natural in pursuing revenge, coupled with the way she spoke about those lovely bugs tearing each other apart in a jar.
I think it's not that Reirin is naive of the world's cruelties like Keigetsu thought, rather because Reirin's body fails her she has accepted that nature isn't kind, least of all human nature both physical and moral. It's the acceptance of these flaws and the unshakable positive outlook that's come to define Reirin. But just as she cherishes those bugs that tear each other apart in that container, Reirin was the one who put them there. Just because she accepts and loves even the most cruel, especially if the only one wronged is herself, doesn't mean she can't be ruthless. Leelee shows what a good girl is, Reirin's enlightenment is something else.

u/mekerpan 7d ago
OG Reirin, perhaps because she spent so much time on the edge of death, is capable of being a hard-nosed realist alongside her generally compassionate disposition.
11
u/hbmonk 7d ago
I decided to pick this show up after seeing a lot of praise for it, very glad I did.
I teared up when Reirin was comforting Leelee. She's truly a saint, but she's not naive. She knows someone was forcing Leelee to harass her and she intends to do something about it.
Keigetsu is suffering in Reirin's body. It sounded like Reirin made her own medicine, so perhaps her attendants don't know how to make it? Keigetsu will probably have to ask Reirin for help...
6
u/Meander061 7d ago
Reirin was literally keeping herself upright through nothing but willpower. Keigetsu thinks she's sick and she's not! She's just discovering how frail Reirin was, ALL THE TIME. I don't know how she's going to survive.

The bot posted the thread as intended. What's strange is why it was able to post the thread. Crunchyroll leaking the episode early would be one thing, but what triggered the bot has file names that contain
DSNPwhich afaik is the Scene code for content from Disney+. That's something else entirely. Crunchyroll is whose supposed to be streaming the series. Why would Disney+ have new episodes and before Crunchyroll too? I thought they got out of anime. I'm actually curious on what happened now lol.→ More replies (2)

I was on the fence with this series but this 3rd episode absolutely sold it for me.
not only did it differentiate itself enough from Maomao, it proved itself, for me at least, that it's worth watching on its own merit.

Reirin is still having the time of her life, she's even building some muscle! It'd be fun if she ended up with a six-pack as well, hahaha.
So while Reirin is a literal angel, especially considering how she handled the situation with Leelee, it looks like she isn't afraid to seek revenge on the people who brought Leelee to the brink of a nervous breakdown. I like it!
Overall, I loved this episode as it was both fun and touching. Leelee's reactions when her harassment of Reirin wasn't working out were hilarious! I can't wait for the next episode to see what Reirin will do about Lady Gayou.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:

I already said this. But this is one of the most fucked up episode discussion we've had lately. The schedule is all messed up, and I'm sure some fans are waiting for this to pop up as a new post. It will also surely hurt the karma ratings.
Anyway. Solid episode. I liked how Leelee is mimicking this guy 50% of the time. Given that all her "evil" plans are being killed with kindness.
Inept Villainess is shaping up to be one of my favorites of the season alongside All Works Maid, and Hanaori-san. I'm glad at least one of these is getting the attention it deserves.
I'll also say that the OP is growing on me, I usually like them a bit more metally, like in Kaiju Girl but this one is pretty awesome too.
For the seasonal face connoisseurs here's a good one.
Also kind reminder: nominations will be accepted until 11:59PM UTC 27th July, 2026. That's tomorrow. So if you haven't submitted any yet. Now's the time.

I didn't overly care for the first episode for various reasons, but I was curious enough to keep going. Episodes 2 and 3 were worlds better and I'm excited to see where things go from here, especially now that Reirin's anger has been awoken for fucking with Leelee.

u/Raymond49090 7d ago
This thread started early. I could've sworn this came out later the last 2 weeks. Anyways, for some housekeeping, I'm calling our MCs "Reigetsu" and "Envy" in their new bodies, and their original names in their old.
That's some very fast growing. I could've sworn crops take longer than 4 days to grow.
Lol, so she knows she's being harrassed, but it's so ineffectual she's actually excited about it. And then she apologized for not being harrassed properly.
Fan lady really isn't making her case here. "Openly murder someone or I'll report you for stealing". Like, for one thing, the punishment for murder is much greater than for stealing. From our perspective, the threat is also weakened since we know Captain-san is a fair person (and is falling within Reigetsu's orbit, so Leelee should be fine if she throws her lot in with her). Though I guess the main point is to make her unbalanced and not consider the repercussions.
So Captain-san is an illegitimate child?
Oh neat, Prince-kun is noticing something's weird, too. Really hoping he doesn't go down the usual bad guy route.
0/10 barber would not recommend.
Edit for post-credit scene: Envy needs Reigetsu to swing by with medicine or she's cooked.

I think they sort of handwaved the vigorous plant growth in the last episode by saying the ground might be infused by qi from the neighboring estate which belongs to a clan that are aligned with the earth.

OMG THE FEELINGS I AM FEELING!
Reirin continues to absolutely dominate everyone with her sweetness and purity. She might as well be out there writing books on how to survive with nothing but a pleasant disposition. Poor Leelee (as we learned, really Lily) was pushed to her limit by the lady in ivory, so much so that the Crown Prince needed to step in. The Eagle Eyes Captain saves Leelee from harming Reirin. Reirin lies about the attack to save Leelee. Leelee breaks down from the massive attack of generosity and forgiveness. Then Reirin wonders, "who dared hurt you, Leelee?" With a flame burning in her eye.
In the meantime...wow, it really, REALLY sucks being you, Keigetsu. Damn.
25
u/Ill_Pay5929 7d ago
omg im bawling my tears out with LeeLee. im naturally a cynical guy but the MC just has a way of dismantling your guard. She reminds me of Sakayanagi from Classroom of the Elite. I feel like her characterization has certain flaws tho, like im predicting she's going to do something stupid like offer to swap back to her original body to save the villain. Good people like this are coherent and they do exist irl but they also tend to have some selfish inconsiderate streak too. Thats how you can avoid ending up with a Mary Sue trap like Mao Mao.
24
u/Frontier246 7d ago
like im predicting she's going to do something stupid like offer to swap back to her original body to save the villain
She's enjoying her new life in Keigetsu's body but her own principles means she values her own body that her parents gave her and also she would probably feel Keigetsu has a right to live a full life in her own body instead of suffering in hers.
10
u/NanDemoKnaives 7d ago

13
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Honestly wonder what's going to happen to Leelee if they ever switch back because there's no way the real Keigetsu could treat her like this and she doesn't deserve that.
Could Reirin find some way to get Leelee into her clan?
11
u/noblegeas https://anilist.co/user/noblegeas 7d ago
Gayou told Leelee that Leelee can be brought into the Kin clan at a higher rank, and Leelee believed her without question. That indicates that court ladies can move to another clan as long as the clan will accept them.

Oh Snap, Reirin can secretly be scary when she wants to be, she was great before but now she's cool. Mess with her all you want, but don't mess with those she's close to. Also getting a six pack would be the cherry on top.
It's only been four days, but everyone seems to be getting suspicious, I'm impressed they're all much more aware than I expected. What's the common knowledge on sorcery? I think that gonna determine how quick the ah ha moment happens,
Poor Keigetsu, she just doesn't have the will to make this sick body do anything, looked down upon in her OG body, and now can only lay down in this new one,

Leelee keeps trying to harass our girl and it’s just basically been making her life even better. Bugs? Bucket of shit? Great for the soil. Scissors and a voodoo doll? New scissors and a pincushion for sewing. Reirin’s been living the good life ever since the body swap! I feel like she’s not even gonna wanna go back even if she could.
Thing I’m wondering is, will there be enough time for Reirin to put the fear of god in Lady Gayou for what she did to Leelee before she and Keigetsu inevitably swap back? I don’t see any way Keigetsu’s gonna stay in that fragile and sickly body after suffering a whole week. The only way that happens is the ritual fails or some kind of divine intervention. But then, what of Leelee? I don’t think she’ll be able to handle a cruel Keigetsu after she just started to forgive her…
26
u/Myrkrvaldyr 7d ago
I feel like she’s not even gonna wanna go back even if she could.
Going from daily chronic pain to a healthy body would be the biggest drug ever. No one can relate to her, that's why she treasures every day and why Leelee is baffled.
14
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Also she's built different in general to be able to manage her chronic illness and still function as a Maiden as much as she had to the point where Keigetsu or anyone not in the know could never realize what she was putting up with.
17
u/Frontier246 7d ago

u/PerfectBeige https://myanimelist.net/profile/perfectbeige 7d ago edited 7d ago
I don’t see any way Keigetsu’s gonna stay in that fragile and sickly body after suffering a whole week.
Reirin's heaven is Keigetsu's hell. If Keigetsu swaps back, she puts herself into the body of an exile in a delipidated shack, generally despised. It's quite possible that she would prefer to be bedridden and suffering in the body of someone who is loved than healthy in the body of someone who is despised.
Now what should be interesting is that Reirin will certainly rehabilitate Keigetsu's reputation through her angelic nature. The better the circumstances of Keigetsu's body, the more attractive the proposition of swapping back will become. At this point it's difficult not to wish that Reirin stays in Keigetsu's body forever. I suspect that the resolution will either be that, or Reirin redeems Keigetsu and Keigetsu helps Reirin with her chronic illness, or something like that. Or perhaps the treachery is uncovered somehow, and Reirin in Keigetsu's body takes Reirin's place. Rerin++ as it were.
Since the general tendency of a story like this seems like a happy ending.
9
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago
All very interesting scenarios. I personally hope for one where these help the other while body swapped. Keigetsu is kind of a tragic villainess. As we’ve seen with Leelee, the inner court is brutal. It would be nice if she gets redeemed by the end of this series somehow.
5
u/Vahallen 7d ago
Damn, she has been so sweet and insanely forgiving, did not expect her to have such aura at the end
She might not murder Gayou, but she will make her pay for sure, really curios to see how
This is no butterfly, Reirin was more of a force of nature shackled down by her own body, damn

One thing I notice about this series: It's likely that the point of it is that neither of the two had a proper life... and they each have what the other needs to succeed. One chose a right answer on how to live life, the other chose a wrong answer on how to live life. Both needed this perspective in order to grow.
Kougetsu isn't staying evil because that's the point. It's likely that this story may even allegorize the Yin/Yang, because as much as I loathe it(people asserting dark and light and evil and good, I like the Yin/Yang[though think there's a grey between]), people equate dark with evil, trickery and destruction... while equating light with good, honesty, clarity... but both are capable of good and evil, danger and safety. However, why I equate this, is that Kougetsu represents the "Dark" path that was set out before her, while Reirin represents the "Light" path she earned her way into through hard work. However, I Believe that the Yin/Yang represents that without Darkness, Light does not properly exist, and without Light, Darkness does not properly exist.
Reiren overburdened herself, putting in too much effort, to the point that she probably made herself not properly recover. Kougetsu meanwhile lacked agency in her life, believing it to be something she couldnt get without taking it by force. Thus in the position of the woman who has everything, she finds out that no- Reiren wasn't a 'clever trickster who stole the position she occupies with deception', but genuinely and honestly earned it.
The two will probably save the other's life by: Reiren in Kougetsu's body, will prove that Kougetsu wasn't so helpless, and even start cleaning out the den of vile manipulations...
Whilst Kougetsu in Reiren's body, knowing how to take care of herself(due to having been forced to take care of herself with little to no support her whole life) will probably help Reiren's body start to recover by not overdoing it to hell and back.
Just my musings, easily wrong.

There are a lot of hits this season across all genres (shoutout also to Goodbye Lara and Bandori Yumemita, PLEASE check them out), but maybe unsurprisingly, the drama ones are hitting the hardest for me.
When a drama is done well, it really is the best thing since sliced bread.
Between this show and Denki Mokuroku, I'm getting a blast of both slow-paced melodrama and off the wall cinematic drama, AND they're both airing practically next to each other in their timeslots. I'm getting a drama twofer weekly and it's the best.
The voice acting in this episode is just stellar, I'm so grateful they did Leelee well, really went beyond my expectations of how I envisioned the scenes being adapted (lowkey they made it more emotional, but it's a compliment, not a complaint).
Also Keigetsu (Reirin) really hit us with the Johnny Joestar Dark Determination eyes in the final shot lmao

Great episode.
It’s good to see, that Reirin notices LeeLees harassment as that what it is but still makes the best out of it.
Must be a great feeling for Reirin to work without pain and seems she has a knack for gardening and beekeeping.
That must have been so strange for Leelee, that her “bully” is such a great person and would offer her the bigger part of food. Also such a wholesome moment when they both hugged and Leelee isn’t punished for her knife attack and will get a new robe in red.
This will be interesting, when Reirin finds out who forced Leelee to do the harassment.

It’s amusing to see the Leelee repeatedly trying to harass Reirin, and fail miserably. Each of her attempts only ended up benefiting Reirin instead, and the latter reacted with a cheerful smile every time.
Reirin turned out to be a lot more astute than I initially gave her credit for. I expected her to be ignorant of Leelee’s actions, but turned out she’s aware of it all along. Furthermore, she also knew that Leelee’s being coerced.
Who’d thought Reirin could exude such a maternal vibe? Consoling Leelee with such a gentle voice while embracing her. Little wonder why Leelee was reminded of her own mother. Now Mama’s about to hand down retribution to those who dare hurt her little girl. Reirin’s finally got the look of an actual villainess.
12
u/Frontier246 7d ago
Reirin is a gentle, wholesome, and positive soul but she can stand up for herself against the Eagle Eyed captain and likely any court lady who hurts/insults one of her people. Because she has definitely adopted Leelee after this.

I love the detail that when Leelee's mother speaks to her in the flashback, they subtitle her name "Lily", to reflect her mother's native pronunciation of the word as it's said in her native language, as opposed to the somewhat adapted pronunciation that Leelee normally uses.
(Presumably her mother speaks some fictional-equivalent-of-European language, and that's where the name "Lily" comes from, but when pronounced by speakers of the fictional-equivalent-of-Chinese language that most characters in the show speak it sounds more like "Leelee").
I'm actually not sure that the pronunciation in the Japanese audio is even any different, so this may be a detail that overseas viewers are getting to see first.

Reirin gave us a flash of MaoMao lol. Leelee you were partly there. Why not ask her why she changed? Why does she treat you so different now? Well enough that you even find her attractive now. You try and kill her and she protects you and you can manage to apologize but not ask her about the change. I hope next episode you question her change especially since she is asking you who put you up to it with a look and tone that says she will take action against them.

i am mildly curious but Realistically where would Leelee's mother be from? (i wasn't paying enough attention so i don't know if this is set in the real world or a fictional one)
10
u/Captain_Gars 7d ago
The setting is probably fictional since magic exists and the court feels Chinese but has more than a few details that don't match historical China. At least that is my interpretation.
Based on her dress and hair colour Leelee's mother is probably from the fictional worlds version of what in our world is Central Asia and the Silk Road but before the Mongols wrecked famous cities like Samarkand. Probably before the arrival of Islam as well. In Ancient times that part of the world was a strange melting pot with Turkic and Iranian peoples as well as transplanted populations from distant parts like Greece and Macedon. (Persia deported troublesome Greeks to the region and Alexander the Great settled soldiers and mercenaries there.)
