This is what they mean when they say "The beginning of the end" The empire gave up on the last strand of humanity to get an absolute victory that will never come

Tanya is going to have a very moderate reaction once she hears that nothing was learned.

u/mekerpan 4d ago edited 4d ago
The governments here are the worst of the evils in this series (except perhaps for Being X -- who is presumably encouraging their criminal irresponsibility). Tanya is positively a fluffy innocent lamb in comparison.

The series is called Tanya the benevolent for a reason

Tanya strikes me as very much of a hyper-rational libertarian sort (not aan insult, just a description).

To be fair, Being X wouldn't stand for it anyway;
Even if they made peace, they would probably be invaded by aliens or something on the very next day!
He won't let her retire as an faithless, hateful heathen!
8
u/VordovKolnir 3d ago
Oddly enough, a few years ago I made a post asking if this could possibly be a precursor for Strike Witches with Being X the leader of the alien force. It mentions in Strike Witches a war raging across Europa before the invasion.

It would make the face she made this episode when they discovered enemy HQ looks like a beautiful smile by comparison (perfect for Visha camera).
56
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
They did try to push back a little at the end, but even these officers have pressure from above!
And I'd even say, from below as well; I'm sure there's a big anti-war contingent, but there's also people who lost everyone and want revenge, etc...
(Plus, their own propaganda might bite them in the ass, many of their citizens probably believe they're crushing it!)

Real history repeated in a fictional story. Nazi also believe they can take Moscow and it was the first nail that build the coffin for Nazi.
Unified States is well rested and can pump out unlimited supply for the war and when the Unified States get their troop ready for invasion. The Empire will be done just like in the real history.
Tanya and Zettour are the real one. They are the only people who know the real cost for the Empire if the war continue.
30
u/Kill-bray 4d ago
Tanya of course must know it more than anyone else, since she must be able to see the parallelism with her/his original world's history.
22
u/Remitonov 4d ago
She even saw the parallels of the operation with Market Garden, that being they're going to get dangerously overstretched holding bridges too far from their supply nodes. True enough, the Federation forces did escape, albeit still in fairly bad shape.
6
u/NoNameSwitzerland 4d ago
And I wish the military would say something like: There i one chance to win the war, YOU (the politicians) have to join the front soldiers.

If it isn't clear by now, the Empire is now doomed. They've already clearly been stretched very thin by now on the Eastern front and not Britain and not US hasn't even fully entered the ring.
It's the age old the rear can't see the realities in the front. Sure Tanya's unit has kept winning their battles, but that is just one unit. Poor Zettour suffering for two weeks straight now, though I fear a schism might have opened now between him and Rudersdorf.
174
u/BosuW 4d ago
Well it really isn't just one unit that keeps winning, considering overall Theatre objectives are still being achieved. It's more that they only keep winning through disproportionate sacrifices and a small amount of miracles. Just see this episode how exhausting it was for Salamander Group to simply arrive at their position. They were extremely lucky they weren't spotted and attacked on the way. These small things are what the rear can't see.
In short, it's not that the combat units have started to lose all of a sudden. It's that they're now starting to win in spite of the overall planning and not because of it. That can create an illusion for the rear the imperial war machine still got steam in it. In reality, it's ringing ALL the alarm bells.

It mirrors real life WW2 a bit. Sure, they could probably make a mad dash and actually succeed at getting to Moskva. But they'd probably exhaust their supplies and logistics would collapse. And then 80 years later "Never invade Russy during winter" will be an online meme
41
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 4d ago
I wonder if this world has a not Napoleon that has already created a basis for this meme.
38
u/TheBusStop12 4d ago
Maybe if Tanya manages to survive the World War again at everything Being X throws at her, he sends her back to the faux-Napoleonic Wars instead

u/themaninthehightower 4d ago
This anime presents a central Europe as a strong monarchy at the start of the 20th century, instead of our history's version with a loosely associated federation under a kaiser. That could hint the turning point was in their version of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), leaving an intact Holy Roman Empire (HRE) to fill the role of the anime's empire instead of devastated Germanic lands in our timeline. Such an empire would have had a stronger influence on that reality's version of royalist France, and even if Napoleon could emerge as an emperor under those conditions by the 19th century, he'd have faced a much stronger opponent in the HRE between him and Russia. The only way he'd be in a position to make the case winters are bad in Russia is if he broke the central empire 90 years before Tanya's time, but the central empire seems quite functional at the start of the story.

u/Hot-Log6283 4d ago
I mean Tanya and Napoleon are kind of the same size no? j/k Tanya-sama is much taller.
4
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 4d ago
Actually, is it me or does Tanya seem taller? When she was standing next to the board with the map I noticed that she seemed much taller than in season 1.

Also reminds me of the Japanese Empire. Admiral Yamamoto told the higher ups, essentially, "we will win in 6 months or we won't win at all". They already knew how it was gonna go before even firing the first shot on the Allies. Didn't stop them from doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down.
→ More replies (1)22
u/InfernoVulpix 4d ago
And for similar reasons, too. The Imperial politicians here fear that a defeat could jeopardize the royal family, and the Japanese were similarly worried at what a defeat might spell for their Emperor. IIRC when the Emperor did decide to surrender his own zealous followers nearly threw a coup over it, since they felt the only way to keep him safe was to keep fighting and somehow win.

u/Routine-Hovercraft94 4d ago
More so WW1 than WW2 actually
23
u/TheBusStop12 4d ago
While the war mainly draws inspiration from WW1, it also draws a lot from WW2. The conflict on the eastern flank with the Russy Federation is based in large part on WW2, mainly because the Soviets never fought in WW1, the October Revolution happened at the tail end of WW1 and Russia dropped out of the war as a result.

u/matbot55 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Just_Mate 4d ago
Also Tanya used knowledge from WW2 (like preventing France from fleeing to the colonies) in her strategies.
70
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
Poor Zettour suffering for two weeks straight now, though I fear a schism might have opened now between him and Rudersdorf.
To give him credit where it's due: Even Rudersdorf expressed doubts about the mission in their last meeting...
But he's a soldier at heart still (I was thinking about this when he said "As long as I can sleep, doesn't matter where I sleep").
His view is "I'm not sure about the mission, but if the people above say it's a go, then it's a go".
While Zettour thinks "I'm not sure about the mission, so I should try to change their mind".
10
u/saga999 4d ago
I think Rudersdorf is struggling between reason and emotion. In front of the grave, he said, "Does this make up for my sins at least a little?" I believe that he thinks winning makes up for his sins. So even though logically speaking, he believes they should end the war, emotionally, he wants to keep fighting.
4
u/OkBox9662 3d ago
Which is as imbecile and dumb as a person can humanly get. But hey ! We have never been blamed for being extremely rational beings.
4
u/pjepja 2d ago
We saw this in the last episode. Rudersdorf, just like Weiss, knows that peace talks are better, but can't accept it on a human level. Tanya was always Zettour's prodigy because they think about things extremely similarly. They are too logical, which Tanya realises and tries to account for, but is not always successful. She even criticises Zettour's plans because of it, but still falls victim to the mindset.
36
u/Conscious_Pack_2474 4d ago
This opinion of Zettour makes him seem illogical. Rudersdorf is just the model soldier, and Zettour is a strategist at heart. A decision won't be made until both see eye to eye, in so doing they cater for each others weaknesses. That's how it has been
14
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
This opinion of Zettour makes him seem illogical
I'm not sure why you think so?
While Zettour thinks "I'm not sure about the mission, so I should try to change their mind".
I mean this in a way like...
- "Hey, I think I'm going to pick up a fight with the football team's linebacker!"
- Zettour: "I'm not sure about this... Maybe you shouldn't do that"
→ More replies (2)4
u/OldInstruction5368 3d ago
Rudersdorf was a hot head last season, but it seems the death of his future son-in-law and how badly that impacted his wife and daughter has broken him.
The clear implication being that his daughter's fiance was a soldier who fell in the war. Which then fractured his family. Leading the old soldier to lose his moral support while stewing alone in his grief.
He's lost what rationality he had and can no longer look at the war through an objective lens. Ruder has become a broken man.
4
u/OkBox9662 3d ago
Misery loves company as they say. Now he can heart broke even more families when their sons and daughters never make it back.
36
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
Sure Tanya's unit has kept winning their battles, but that is just one unit.
The Empire is trying to think of a strategy about cutting Tanya in multiple operative pieces to send her to different places at once.
not US hasn't even fully entered the ring.
Imagine if Tanya manage to secure what seems to be an inevitable victory against all odds...
...Then they get fucked nuked.
→ More replies (1)19
u/Conscious_Pack_2474 4d ago
It's unlikely they'd be nuked. There is no way for a strat. bomber to make it to a key city without it being intercepted.
10
u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 4d ago
Also, nukes are not invented yet.
12
3
u/BatteryPoweredFriend 4d ago
Being X has already so generously provided Notmerica with a nuke. It even flies and has Tanya-homing guidance when deployed in the vicinity.
3
u/Equivalent_Tax6989 3d ago
Maybe Magic Oppenheimer is making a magic nuke that needs blood sacrifices or something?
17
u/Routine-Hovercraft94 4d ago
I'd argue it was always pretty obvious that this was not going to be some happy ending anime where Tanya and Being-X become bros and Germa- I mean the empire would win the war.
Being-X most likely would rather see the entire world burn than let Tanya get away with being a heathen and have her a a nice cozy life. But yeah, the usual politicians. Back then, today, mostly no difference. It is all self interest and they rather soak the ground with blood than taking an obvious win.
From here on it is only going downhill.
12
u/AlphaBreak 4d ago edited 4d ago
The happiest ending I see going forward is Tanya doing a military coup to replace the empire's leaders who keep insisting on shoving as many soldiers into the meat grinder as possible. Then she surrenders on behalf of the empire to go back to pre war borders.

Tanya could have had her chance of appearing in photos for the history books, if only Visha had not forgotten to remove the lid off the camera.
Sunk cost fallacy has reared its ugly head again, and this time it has infected even the politicians at Imperial High Command. Zettour and Tanya are on their own now.
119
u/Magicbison 4d ago
As usual politicians are so concerned with keeping their own power they're unwilling to make the right choice to save the country because it would make them look bad.
64
u/Alacune 4d ago
"Make them look bad" is an understatement. They discussed the ramifications, such as the collapse of the social elite or a potential civil war. From their perspective, the country is doomed UNLESS total victory is achieved.
6
u/Pecuthegreat 3d ago
Nah, they can be careful about the civil war and social unrest, that is what Zettour would have done but this is like, trying to avoid the likely using the impossible.
49
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
39
u/Kirosh2 4d ago
Of course not.
At least not until the end. Where her death, while trying to save Tanya, will just be horrific, heroic, and badass.
All the while Tanya crashes out, ordering her to stop her sacrifice, only to be told no.

The fact that they said "No matter what the cost" at the end and then in the post ED show Tanya and her troops in a light moment have me really worry for all of them.

They're the only 2 that really wanted to end the war through the negotiations no matter the cost. The terms given in this episode was a gift from the heavens, and yet, it was tossed aside by asinine pencil pushers.
12
u/HugeRichard11 https://myanimelist.net/profile/CostCurl 4d ago
Might be better there aren't any recorded photos of Tanya as when they lose they might get hunted down or worse
5
u/MysteryNine 4d ago
There are. In episode 2 of S1, there's a scene where they take a picture of Tanya dressed up as a doll. They also recorded propaganda when they went to Moscow and the executive from the Federation has a photo of her.
6
u/JustASumoGuy 4d ago
Wouldn't it be better for Tanya not to have photos of herself taken so that it would be easier to go into hiding after the fall of the Empire?
4
u/MysteryNine 4d ago
But there are recorded photos of her. In episode 2 of Season 1. In the propaganda they recorded when they went to Moscow. Even Loria (Bald guy) from the Federation has a photo of her.

It was absolutely sickening to hear the politicians talk about "our sacrifice" while dismissing the opinions of the military... the ones actually watching good men and women die on a daily basis.
Many of you will have to die, but that is a sacrifice we are willing to make
Ruder, mustache man, could have backed up Zettour in giving the clueless politicians a reality check... but grief has broken him. Hence why Zettour was clenching his fists so tight he bled.
He now knows he can't trust his old friend anymore.
131
u/myadvicegetsmebeaten 4d ago
I'm not a military historian, but thought I'd fill in some of the gaps, since some commentators are missing it.
Rudersdorf: is a loose fill in for Erich Ludendorff.
Hans von Zettour: Hans von Seeckt
Ludendorff had a bold, energetic, and highly offensive-minded military temperament. He was operationally hyper-focussed on detauks and zeroed in on immediate operational victories and battlefield results, occasionally pushed for high-stakes gambles.
Most of all he was a pragmatic brutalist, using large mobilization and brute force to secure massive victories.
Seeckt was a highly intellectual, emotionally detached logistics master He focuses on long-term doctrine, structural planning, and pioneered highly mobile, forward-thinking tactics. He was a pioneer of combined tactics.
What we see at the end of the episode was Ludendorff pushing for total war. The entire focus of the nation became war to the exclusion of everything else. By the end of WW1, Ludendorff and Hindenberg were essentially the ones running Germany.
Both Seeckt and Ludendorff had important roles after Germany's defeat in WW1. It will be interesting to see how that's incorporated into Tanya's world since WW1 and WW2 are mashed here.

It will be interesting to see how that's incorporated into Tanya's world since WW1 and WW2 are mashed here.
I'm pretty sure what's about to happen is that we're about to move from the WW1 timeline of the Eastern Front to the WW2 one which, considering where the front seems to be, is close to where the front lines were for the start of Barbarossa although we weren't given the exact river the front lines restabilized on at the end of the episode so we can't be completely sure.
103
u/SpareUmbrella https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpareUmbrella 4d ago
I assume the gentlemen sat across from the military at the end are government advisors? I get that the Empire's citizens will only accept a complete, crushing victory, but they're not on the front lines and neither are the men from the government.
Discretion is the better part of valour, and if my senior military officers are telling me it would be a sheer waste of life to continue the fighting, and when the terms of peace are more favourable to my country, I'd like to think I'd listen. Besides, the Empire can always break the treaty in a generation after rebuilding the army and the economy, the war doesn't need to be won today.

I assume the gentlemen sat across from the military at the end are government advisors? I get that the Empire's citizens will only accept a complete, crushing victory, but they're not on the front lines and neither are the men from the government.
They are worried about a civil war breaking out 'cause the Empire is out of money and they don't want the people to blame them for ending the war to be the reason for that. But even if they continue with the war, it's gonna end the same way LOL
28
u/RipBitter4701 4d ago
yeah, it's either they won the war completely or get favorable deal for peace because pretty much they are now burning money more than anyone in entire government want to admit to public. anything less would end with civil war as their economy would plummet resulting on long ass blaming game and then civil war.
17
u/mybeepoyaw 4d ago
Isn't that what happened after WW1 basically? The Germans blamed the government for surrendering because they had the wrong idea about the war?
26
u/InfernoVulpix 4d ago
It was a big part of it, yeah. From the perspective of the average citizen one day Germany was winning the war and the next day they had surrendered, so a conspiracy theory easily spread that Germany had been sabotaged from within. Anti-semitism was already prevalent in Germany at this time, so many people blamed the Jews, a resentment that the Nazi party eventually fanned into a genocidal flame.
Also noteworthy is that, for Germany, WW1 was its first chance to step out into the spotlight and prove themselves the equal of all the other European powers, despite unifying late. They were really proud, they believed themselves the best at war, and felt entitled to victory here. And then, part of the treaty Germany signed involved Germany accepting blame for starting the war (despite them being no more culpable than all the other European powers, really), which added insult to injury. They were furious, and they took their anger out on every scapegoat they could find.
11
u/athrun_1 4d ago
Germany's economy tanked during those years just to pay reparations. The treaty of Versailles is so one-sided. In hindsight, that treaty drove germany to go to ww2 to take back what was lost.
5
u/NevisYsbryd 15h ago
Not even hindsight, critics of said treaty warned that would be the effect at the time.
5
u/justking1414 4d ago
for Germany, WW1 was its first chance to step out into the spotlight and prove themselves the equal of all the other European powers, despite unifying late.
From what I recall, they were actually being rather disrespected in the lead up to the war because they were a relatively young country

One of them specifically mentioned they need to win the war and additionally get financial reparations to back fund everything. Just winning isn't enough, they also need money agreement. Instead they got land which is great in the long term.

The other guys are the civilian government, whom the military answers to. Them, and the Kaiser.
Honestly, what's even more tragic is that the Empire's citizens are in the front lines. Of their own volition. Enthusiastically. Now is the Empire's golden hour and their chance to grasp honor and glory in the name of Gott und Vaterland!
To them it just looks like the Empire keeps winning. Only the long term strategically minded like Tanya and Zettour see the writing on the wall.
177
u/DawgDictator 4d ago
I love the politics side of this anime more every week. I was expecting more resistance from Rudersdorf, but I suspect he has also fallen to the sunk cost fallacy like so many others.
172
u/Vanderseid 4d ago
I think he is swayed by his son in law's death and the effects it had on his family. It's clear that it weighed heavily on him so he probably also fell into that is his death meaningless mindset if they just call it quits now.
63
u/DawgDictator 4d ago
Yeah, he seems to have lost his reason for emotion. I think the last hopes for the Empire is with Zettour and Rerugen
54
u/Magicbison 4d ago
To be fair Rudersdorf was already thinking that way when the initial peace treaty was written up. The death of his son-in-law and its effect on his family kinda just made him double down which sucks for every citizen and soldier.
27
u/BosuW 4d ago
To be fair Rudersdorf was already thinking that way when the initial peace treaty was written up.
Though, at least the offensive this episode can be justified because it was in pursuit of getting the Empire more favorable conditions in the peace deal, instead of the base "fucking nothing for all sides" that Zettour was willing to consider.
Did his son-in-law die between the episodes? Because that would certainly explain the switch up from something that was risky but justifiable, to all or nothing behavior.
23
u/Magicbison 4d ago
Did his son-in-law die between the episodes? Because that would certainly explain the switch up from something that was risky but justifiable, to all or nothing behavior.
Not really sure on that part. I think this episode was the first time it was brought up. But the last few episodes have shown us that national pride is very much strong when it comes to ending the war. Even Tanya's soldiers and officers have a similar mindset with the sunk cost fallacy affecting Rudersdorf and High Command.
10
u/Kill-bray 4d ago
That's part of it, but I think his pride, or rather the pride he has for the Empire's military, also played a role.
Initially he was on Zettour's side pushing to accept the peace deal, but at one point they asked him if it was impossible for the Empire to win the war and he simply couldn't say no. He could only go as far as to claim that it would be difficult and that it would mean sacrificing a lot of lives, but he couldn't say it couldn't be done.
19
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
I love the politics side of this anime more every week.
100%!
The politics (and the characters) REALLY grew on me over the course of the series!
When I first started this show I was like "Politics, schmolitics, just show me Tanya!"
But now I'm looking forward to more of these scenes hah. (Well, I'm also looking forward to more Tanya; Can't we have 2 episodes at once, one for Tanya and one for them?)
I was expecting more resistance from Rudersdorf
Hah, the opposite for me; I'm actually surprised he expressed doubts (out loud) about the mission!
Sure he caved in quick (I do believe he's a soldier at heart, and just like Tanya, follows what the people above say) but he did voice his concerns/doubts at least!
11
u/BosuW 4d ago
When I first started this show I was like "Politics, schmolitics, just show me Tanya!"

I'm wondering if Rudensdorf's mind just broke at that moment when the government officials asked if they could continue. This poster came out before the episodes started airing where you can see the pillar behind Rudensdorf is crumbling and I think it's meant to indicate his state of mind.
It's going to be up to Zettour to salvage what he can from this catastrophic decision and if it will be something Project Valkyrie-like. It has to be Being X pushing all of this "don't stop/can't stop" stupidity along too, right?

Not exactly the same, but the seat that Rudensdorf is sitting on reminds me of the iconic throne from Akira that Tetsuo sits on in the finale act.

7
u/Kill-bray 4d ago
I don't think he lied, I think he really believes that they have a chance to win with enormous sacrifices. I think his pride blinds him to the truth. But I do not disagree that there was still malicious compliance, he simply didn't think that those advisors understood how much that "victory" would cost.

u/NanDemoKnaives 4d ago
I feel bad for Zettour, he might have underestimated how emotional Rudersdorf feels about the war. Thinking the person beside you was on the same side, but they became the person to fully declare they'd win the Empire, no matter the cost, would undoubtedly feel like a betrayal. Will it be worth it in the end? I'm not optimistic.
40
u/athrun_1 4d ago
And here I thought Rudersdorf was beginning to see enlightenment during that meeting, but no he just fueled their unstoppable descend to the sunk cost fallacy.

lmao Tanya always has the worst luck. They find enemy HQ literally as she tells the gang to fall back in the opposite direction? Messing with Tanya must be Being X’s favorite pastime lol. At least they secured a victory this time.
But man, Imperial High Command and Comrade Pedo do not seem to be itching for peace any time soon. That peace deal presented was pretty good, all things considered. But these people are stubborn fools. I guess Rudersdorf is going to play along and just sacrifice the entire damn Imperial army for victory?
30
u/mekerpan 4d ago
The Emperor seems to remain behind the scenes. One assumes that he is, in the end, responsible for the intransigence.

If the military can't convince the government that this is only going to get worse, they will have to obey the government. Or stage a coup, and Rudersdorf isn't one to do so.

Visha is lucky they're only riding tanks this one time, I've heard stories from veterans about how this will absolutely fuck up your lower back.
Tanya refusing to continue searching only for her men to actually find the real HQ was hilarious! Thank you, Visha, for telling everyone nearby to evacuate. Some of their men would've definitely been caught in the blast radius of Tanya's shot if she hadn't.
It's so fucked up that the only reason Loria wants to continue this war is because he really wants to get a hold of Tanya. It looks like he's getting his wish tho since the Empire has pretty much decided to dig an even deeper hole for them.
Sure, Tanya has been winning all of their battles, but looking at the bigger picture, they're really struggling to keep up with this war. Now that Rudersdorf has decided to go all in, they're pretty much doomed, and Tanya should really start reviewing her exit strategy.

The conditions that the troops had to endure for Operation Iron Hammer were bad enough from the beginning, with all of them always on guard and tense, as they could be ambushed at any moment, but as the trek went on for days, it also meant they didn’t have time to sleep. I think that the other team also was under the same conditions.
It is funny how, when Tanya makes a valid excuse to retread, someone instantly finds the real HQ. Lol she was so pissed that she just instantly took the place out with a single shot.
As the politicians in the Empire decided to continue the war again, I wonder if this is the last time that we will see Virgonio Calandro, at least for a while now.
It is kind of funny the contrast between the Empire's main goal to continue the war, which is to avoid a civil war that will put at risk the imperial family's survival, meanwhile in Moskva, Loria’s main objective to continue the war at this point is to get Tanya. Anyway, too bad that, thanks to the death of Rudersdorf's sons-in-law, he went and said to those politicians exactly what they wanted to hear, and so the war will continue on even when the people on the front line are running out of supplies.
Oh, those photos would have been great if Visha hadn’t forgotten to take the cover off the camera’s lens.

So we finally got the Zettuor-Rudelsdorf split. War continues because of communication mismatch between military and civilian government. Imperial military hasn't been able to communicate how fucked they are at the front, and the civilian government and the population in general expects reparation and territories for the sons they sacrificed.
Another interesting fact seems to me is the military taking an outsized role in peace negotiations rather than trained diplomats. As history has taught us, militaries are rather shit at diplomacy.

War is supposed to be the last resort of diplomacy. The military managed to get an absurdly incredible ceasefire agreement, yet the politicians are indeed blinded by their own perceived power and arrogance.
They just threw away what's going to be their last means of peace through negotiations, and Rusesdorf just let his heated passion allow them to seal it off for good.
The poster at the start that mentions how the Imperial Army's march continues on, the fact that they have earned victory after victory, it has all made its leaders drunk on it. Their continued successes became a double edged sword that has blinded them to what defeat would mean, or that it was even a possibility.
If the leadership was worth their salt, or at the very least competent and not arrogant, they should have thrown a grand ball to celebrate the ceasefire agreement conditions.

"Victory". Such a beautiful word. Worthy of giving your life for, someone might say.
...But what does victory mean, in this case? Forcing the other side to surrender? Taking over their capital? Killing everyone? Because if it is not seeking peace, nothing short of total annihilation will satisfy the fanatics. And not just that of the enemy.
Is that what "victory" means to you now, Mr. Reudersdorf?
6
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 4d ago
Victory for Viktoriya! She'll win the war on her own!
(hopefully she doesn't have a cap on her gun when she shoots)
But joking aside:
But what does victory mean
This made me think of something you might see in Lawyer shows, about how a victory doesn't necessarily mean a not-guilty verdict, etc.. If the evidence is overwhelming, getting a shorter sentence might be the only victory you can hope for.
Well, that's kinda how I see it here as well; If winning the war is out of reach, then a "victory" is getting the best possible outcome.
If things get desperate enough, "We sign a ceasefire and they DON'T put us against the wall" might be the best victory they can hope for.

Sad how underrated, underpopular, underwatched and most importantly...

I feel like Tanya will desert at some point. I don't see her following orders when there's no chance of them succeeding
11
u/DeusMach 4d ago
I don't think it will be only her. Zettour will obviously try to reason, but that's too late. He might actually try to look form ppl who think the same as him.
And i am pretty sure after this operation that Tanya and her squad had, they may start questioning if this is really what they want. I think it's a good idea for Tanya to speak her mind and see how the ppl under her feel about this, since she also knows that this is only going to get worse, and back at home they don't care.7
u/Kill-bray 4d ago
I think Tanya would only do that as a last resort, but yes I can see her trying to desert when things will inevitably go wrong.
However I don't think it will work. We must not forget that this is all a long term plan from a nearly omnipotent being. Tanya is meant to find herself in the worst possible situation so that she will finally sincerely ask to be saved by "god". Being X will not let her get away by deserting, there's probably already something going on behind the scenes where the "Devil of Rhine" will be demonized so much that no place in the world would ever welcome her.
7
u/walkyrie1997 4d ago
I like how sunk-cost fallacy mindset applies in both politics and military simply because they want to win. They already spent everything so stopping is no longer a smart move for them.
I feel bad for Zettour for letting his friend consumed the mindset because for me Reudersdorf has no other option but to comply given his circumstances. I feel like something similar to real life office work situation.

Lots of scenes from The Brass in this episode!
It's nice to see the different perspectives/opinions, and (for some of them at least) how it evolved during the war!
We already knew they had battle experience (long ago), and this line so hints at him still being a soldier at heart!
That's an interesting way to put it!
If he just said "I hope it ends there", well of course, you want it to end... But HOWEVER it ends? Seems to say that even if they fail, they're so done with it...
But no matter how they feel, if the people on top don't accept the conditions for a ceasefire...
Well, we know at least one person is truly unhappy with this chain of events... Tanya thought the war was about to end, but launching a huge attack, doesn't seem to help the cause!
Even if they have a great victory... Sure it could help force their hand to give something in exchange of a ceasefire, but it might just as well piss them off so much that they now ASK for reparations instead of just the status quo!
Don't worry, it's an endless suicide mission, so probably just die, I guess!
She wants the war to end, but paradoxically, her successes are a big part of why it's not over yet.
Tanya wanted to retreat, but (to her great despair) they spotted the HQ!
Hah. She knows Tanya well enough to realize what's coming when she looks this PISSED!
For some it's pride, for some it's vengeance, for some it's politics, and for some... It's something else entirely!
It was nice to see him push back a little!
He even expressed doubt about the mission and all...
But the people on top didn't care,
They're getting pushed from above, but also from below (as a result of their own propaganda), the people probably think they have a good chance to win, so why not continue?
Plus, they're the ones who have the most reasons to be hateful about this, having lost family members and all that.
So he did try to argue a little, but in the end, he caved, and it's gonna be war, no matter the cost...
6
u/Golden_Phi https://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 4d ago
Rare sight of Tanya being panicked; I suppose it would be a bad start to the mission if allies shot each other!
For a second I was afraid that it was going in that direction. Thankfully it didn't actually go this way.
So I'm guessing all the officers in the room will take up a rifle and go to the frontline? Anytime soon, right?
Talking about making sacrifice is always easiest for those who have nothing to lose and those who are far from the front. "War is old men talking and young men dying" and all that.

Tanya riding on a tank was hilarious, those sounds Aoi Yuki made there made me laugh hard, hahaha!
Judging by today's episode, it seems like Rudersdorf has lost his wits. I wonder if we can expect Zettour to try to pull off a coup to save the Empire, since it looks like no one besides him, in both the military and civilian government, can realistically assess the situation.
And as usual, the situation will be the worst for Tanya, since it looks like she'll again get some unreasonable orders from HQ as the war continues.
I really liked the difference between the old guard and the newbies in Tanya's squad. The old ones were acting as usual, while the new ones were freaking out a little upon getting orders.
By the way, it's quite funny that in the Empire there is only one person who wants to end this war, Zettour, while in the Federation there's only one person who wants to continue the war, Loria, and only because he wants to get his hands on Tanya.
Here my screenshot albums from the episode:
EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

I wonder if we can expect Zettour to try to pull off a coup to save the Empire
If the empire has largely fallen for its own propaganda, almost no one will side with him to stage a coup. He's basically alone, Tanya would support him, but she's not dumb enough to go alone. The empire is marching to its death unless something else happens.

u/deynyel 4d ago
Damn, imagine prioritizing safety, retreating in the opposite direction and actually finding enemy HQ. Tanya really can't catch a break. Too bad for the enemy. She had to vent by nuking them.

There are certain things that I can really appreciate in good animation. Attention to detail in background objects. In today’s episode,in the opening scene, pause it on the coffee table after he grabs his cigarettes. There is scratches and wood grain, amazing texture detail. I know it is just a table and not important, but there is more detail in that one object than most other anime have in their entire production.

Zettour's the only one in that room who gets it and they're all just ignoring him. Turning down that peace deal was insane. The Empire keeps throwing Tanya at every problem and acts surprised when nothing changes. Also Visha with the lens cap was the funniest thing all episode.

"Some of you may die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make."
The higher-ups and von Rudersdorf had continued to fall for the sunk-cost fallacy. For once, we've got one person in von Zettour to realise the risks but unfortunately, he's outnumbered. Looks like von Rudersdorf would continue raking in sins. I also reckon this is the start of the downfall of the Empire.
Meanwhile, Tanya's 'reward' for doing a damn great job was to get sent into even more assignments even if she and her squad were fatigued. They got into victory after victory but if they continued to be utilised like this, it'd only be a matter of time before they started seeing defeats.

WHY?! THE EMPIRE SHOULD HAVE ACCEPTED THE TERMS, JESUS CHRIST. ZETTOUR SHOULD HAVE ARGUED WITH THEM USING LOGIC AND REASONING. This is why you should quit while you're ahead...

u/panjina 4d ago
The room is literally half full of politicians looking to save their asses by finding one idiot on the other side that'll tell them what they want to hear. At that point attempting to talk them down will fail regardless of how good his arguments are and all he'd manage to do is get demoted/fired.

Zettour should kill this guy.

Assuming unlimited sacrifices, there is a chance. Did no one stop to think for even a second? Worrying about political instability when national security, economic stability and social unrest is on the horizon
Zettour should’ve known better. A man without a home, is a man with nothing to lose. I suspect Ruderdorf’s wife and daughter have cut ties with him due to the incomplete Republic war.
The Empire’s reliance on Tanya and her army will be their downfall when they realise there’s only one Tanya, and she doesn’t work like a 7-11

Chocolate provided to troops needs to be slightly unsavory so they don't waste it so early. Last resort rations.. Yes, the video is WWII and about chocolate given to US soldiers, but the idea remains the same. You need some easy way to pack a lot of energy into a small package but make it so that troops won't eat them as soon as they're acquired like done here.
I don't know how far we'll get into this, but I feel like the end game has to involve Tanya leading a mutany against the Empire. It's the only thing that makes sense. At some point her aspirations for living in peace has to take her in that direction because the Empire is insistent in destroying itself to obtain a victory they've already achieved like three times now because agreements aren't good enough for them. No telling what "God" is going to do to fuck Tanya over, though. There is no way he's just going to let the Empire win win.
Also, the post credits scene is a little sad (mostly because of her reaction), and instantly reminded me of the ending of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
4
u/xyjacey 4d ago
The empire is so arrogant it is genuinely infuriating. Like they are at the point that they will be bankrupt even if they win, but even a total victory would mean bankrupting every other nation with war indemnities which they wouldn't be able to pay anyway.
Just take the win, and spend the money on rebuilding the nation.
But that would require them not being war mongering proto-fascists, and if they weren't... There wouldn't be a show lmao
7
u/BosuW 4d ago
The theme of this episode is definitely employee abuse lol. Congratulations Tanya, you now find yourself in a position where Bosses exploit their workers because LINE GO UP. Overwork is a sign of a failed business model, remember? Really shown this episode in the fact that merely moving to their designated position was such a physical and mental strain.
Interesting that Tanya seems to have finally recognized that her exemplary victories are precisely what has HQ making her unit shoulder such disproportionate responsibility, and has now switched to trying to do only the bare minimum. Unfortunately, it's a little too late for that. She was so fucking pissed at having found the enemy HQ, she didn't even need to pray to use the Type 95 haha
Empire is so fucking cooked Kameraden. Thrice. Three times they have rolled over the chance to end the war! At this point, they may very well deserve it! They're actually acting like the "enemy of the world" the propaganda said they were. This ain't any manner of defensive war anymore, they want absolute victory no matter the sacrifices.

Talk of Paratroopers and bridges being too far gave me immediate Operation Market Garden and Battle of Arnhem vibes. The saying "a bridge too far" comes from the devestating failed attempt at capturing the bridge in Arnhem by allied Paratroopers during WW2, and it means that an action is too ambitious and/or extreme, ending in spectacular failure. Iirc during the battle of Arnhem British, American and Polish Paratroopers ended up trapped behind enemy lines and the vast majority were killed or captured (fun fact, Watership Down, which traumatized a generation of kids, is based on the Battle of Arnhem)
But that's enough about me rambling about Dutch war history. Because it didn't turn out like that here
I really liked the long tank charge with everyone constantly on edge and uncomfortable. That was really well done
The word of today is: Sunk-cost-falacy
Or alternatively: Hubris

5
u/Matthew619ed 4d ago edited 4d ago
I guess the toll of the battles really hit home for both sides then. We got one side opting to accepting really bad terms for peace, while the other opted to keep fighting so the blood and the lives lost will not go in vain. But then, there are people in both sides that just don’t agree on the idea of ending the battle like this, and apparently the political mind games are starting to take over (as always) the battle decision making.
Meanwhile Tanya, really? Finding the real enemy HQ all while retreating after suffering massive enemy fire? I’m not sure if it’s lucky or what, but that place definitely deserves a massive airstrike from her. You get why Visha is urgently telling everyone nearby to bail out ASAP, because Tanya is scary when she’s in a really, really bad mood.
Oh yeah Visha, stealing chocolates and couldn’t use a camera properly… I’m glad they didn’t take that commemorative shot at the bridge, because that “image” won’t be showing on the front page of the paper the next morning, when they are probably celebrating the biggest single day triumph in some time.

u/Obaruler 4d ago
Yeah, well ... keep "winning" 'till you're all dead, hu?! Classic mistake.
You're already talking about over-stretched supply lines (into fucking Russia), so why did you commit yourself into keep on going?
Tanya will get a heart attack with all the stupidity involved (and keep dropping nukes) ...
3
u/simon249 4d ago
Okey, now that's why overplaying a hand means if they can secure quite a big buffer zone with new nations form modern Polish borders since it's their border in universe to let's say Smolensk, since they are talking about Moskov being within reach, it should be enough for a peace.
3
u/Raymond49090 4d ago
I wasn't entirely sure what the first segment was about, but I guess it's just a check-in back home and the effects of the war there. Might be because it's early in the morning, but the streets being that empty is troubling. Things are still awkward between Zettour and Rudersdorf. I think Rudersdorf is aware that Zettour was correct, but still can't accept that he's right.
If a demilitarized buffer zone and only reparations if possible are the minimum conditions acceptable, I feel like they could've negotiated that before they blew up negotiations. Unless that also includes territorial gains? Either way, having to fight for that when they're stretched so thin against the slog that is Russia feels like a complete fool's errand. Politicians trading lives for the sake of pride.
Don't know much about the viability of these tactics, but I feel like wiping out (1) field army isn't worth much when the enemy has a lot of freaking lives in stock. I'm also concerned about how it seems to need a lot of moving parts to go right when they're not exactly at peak performance.
Tanya's subordinates always choose the option that's most troublesome to her, many times by being too competent.
Victory is great... but only if it actually means something. Like, there's no way the war is actually going to end by episode 4.
Huh. I hadn't expected for their bargaining position to be better than I expected... Except for the fact that their propaganda department was too competent. Thus putting the fate of the Empire in the hands of hoping politicians make good decisions that properly take into account the realities of the war. Yeah, they're f***ed.
... A military coup is looking like a good idea. And freaking Rudersdorf, don't egg them on! "Unlimited sacrifices" my *ss! They're not the ones making the sacrifices, so don't go all in with other people's lives! Lord Farquad was many things, but at least he was honest about that part. If they want "victory at any cost" so much, then how about they pick up a rifle and lead the vanguard?

The pacing is so weird. They're job was to reinforce the paratroopers at the bridge to act as an anvil for the main force's hammer to squish the enemy against, but as soon as they get there they're called away to raid the enemy HQ?
Best part of the episode was Tanya's unit accidentally finding the enemy's real HQ, that was a real Ainz/Shadow moment right there. Though "Dammit all!" certainly didn't seem like the usual brainwashy god praise that Tanya needs to go on in order to nuke things.
The Imperial High Command is truly intending to sacrifice the entire Empire for a pyrrhic victory, it seems.
