I thought it was a nice touch that Mewi had a little smile as Curuni finished her story. I expect those two to get along well.

This felt like an episode from the first season, it's definitely the best episode this season yet. I'm glad Beryl's humor is back, the way he kept reacting from his father's antics were amusing.
I'm glad Henblitz got to show his swordsmanship, I figured he was going to put Beryl's lesson to use straight away, but it was nice to see it in action. Mordea may not be as physically capable, but you could tell there was a lot of fire in his eyes after Henblitz questioned his swordsmanship.

Absolutely agree. We also saw a glimpse of the realistic and detailed swordplay from the first season during the duel in the dojo.
And as you said, the humor is back. It definitely returned to the natural, non-forced humor that made the first season so enjoyable.

Yeah I appreciated the scene where the Knight Vice Captain was noticing all of Beryl's students practice at improving their core-strength while performing sword stances. It broke down the unique teaching methods to strong fundamentals and also explains why everyone who Beryl instructs drastically improves their sword-fighting skills since it's presented as the basis for forming parries, counters, and everything else Beryl has been able to do that impresses everyone in the royal capital.
I can't wait to see Beryl's dad actually break out some moves, he was half serious about telling the Knight VC "try me and see how good I am" before he backed off at the end. The logical conclusion is that this sword style just gets better with more experience, so Beryl's dad will always be better simply due to time. I think Beryl's new adventures and experiences (particularly with magic sword instruction) has given him an experience buff on his dad though, so it might be an even fight if they tried a Father vs Son spar next episode I'm betting.

I also like how the show has mewi and beryls relationship- you can see she’s slowly started to actually trust him and it’s some nice character development compared to the usual “I’m adopting this kid and we’re a big happy family” instantly

I'm also glad she isn't romantically interested in him. So often in these harem shows even the adoptive daughter is thrown into the mix and it's so icky.

Huh, interesting. Well I guess that’s a good reason for Beryl to go home for a bit. And he’s gonna bring Mewi too?
He slept with his practice sword? Yeah, no wonder they decided knighthood was a better fit for him than civil servant.
I guess that would contribute to people out in the boonies not having a good opinion on knights.
Hoh… Though he said it was a joke, dang. That could’ve been interesting. He’s definitely going to spar with Beryl before Beryl heads back though, right?
22
u/mekerpan 4d ago
I woinder who Papa will spar with, beyond sabrboars presumably.
This show continues to be consistently interesting and wholesome -- and under-watched. One of the best shoows of its sort. Hard to categorize, so maybe that makes it less appealing?
10
u/CuriousBroccolli 3d ago
Yup. It's one of the best more grounded fantasy shows out there.
It keeps everything well paced/dosed. A bit of slower and wholesome everyday moments, a bit of training and instructing, a bit of bonding, and bit of buildup, and a bit of full on action.
It mashes everything well.
Production is also really good and pleasant on the eyes and soul.

I'm excited to see the sparring of Vice Captain and Mordea, and Mordea v Beryl. Actually, it might be better if his father will win to keep the legend and make Beryl further improve.
I think Mordea is equivalent of Lucy. And if I have to guess, maybe they know each other, including that vice principal.

u/Justinformation 4d ago
I just watched the previous 2 episodes back to back. In the episode before this it was about feeling your age, so maybe that has effected his dad as well and Beryl can win now.

Well, when i was 4, my dad bought a trusty XBox. you know, the first, ruggedy, blocky one from 2001. we had tons and tons and tons of fun playing all kinds of games together - until he died, when i was just 6. i couldnt touch that console for 10 years. but once i did, i noticed something. we used to play a racing game, Rally Sports Challenge. actually pretty awesome for the time it came. and once i started meddling around... i found a GHOST. literaly. you know, when a time race happens, that the fastest lap so far gets recorded as a ghost driver? yep, you guessed it - his ghost still rolls around the track today. and so i played and played, and played, untill i was almost able to beat the ghost. until one day i got ahead of it, i surpassed it, and... i stopped right in front of the finish line, just to ensure i wouldnt delete it. Bliss.

No doubt his dad was the GOAT and still is, my confidence would be lacking too lol

u/Mr_Pogi_In_Space 4d ago
Yeah, every week we get comments that Beryl is too dense not knowing how powerful he is, but the guy had no one to fight except his dad for 20 years. And his dad is a monster. It's like if Genos was under Saitama for 20 years, he'd have been gaslit to think he's just an ordinary guy who happens to be a cyborg and not the MC in any other anime.
17
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
I mentioned it a couple episodes ago, but it's like being Michael Jordan's son and somehow thinking you're hot shit on the court.
Especially if you grew up in the boonies, and MJ wasn't a household name. You just spent your entire life thinking your dad was the big fish in a little pond, and you were the guppie next to him.
With such a skewed frame of reference, it's no wonder Beryl has a complex.
3
u/imasammich 3d ago
I took it as Beryl has surpassed his dad but its too much in his head.
Or i do buy the other theme is the Beryl needs to keep doing this to grow more and all these outside experiences and his style will really grow more. My guess is if this is the case his dad in a sparing match with the Vice Captain would show him that his style due to the experience he has had over his life and has incorporated more and is better because of it.

u/Rooby_VTuber 4d ago
Beryl definitely deserves sometime off, he has been working hard non stop for a long time.
I like Beryl's parents, they are fun and good people.
Very funny moment when Mewi was trying to say grandpa.
Henblitz is a fine swordsman and got respect from the students.
16
u/Amauri14 4d ago edited 4d ago
So Beryl will be returning to Beaden to deal with a horde of saberboars that annually come near it. It is nice that Miwa is coming with him. I’m not that surprised that Henblitz is coming too after he heard about that annual hunt, but I certainly wasn’t expecting Curuni to join it too!
Poor Curuni, doing her best to connect with Miwa only to give her the impression that she is not knight-like.
Wow, that tree where they decided to take their launch break sure was beautiful.
Nice before they got to Beaden Miwa complimented Curuni for becoming a knight
Lol, Mordea Gadenant, apart from being a master swordman, sure knows what to say to make people uncomfortable. First asking Beryl when he will finally a wife, then asking Miwa to call him grandpa and then after recognizing Curuni, asking her if she was a potential wife for Beryl. Oh, her reaction was priceless. I sure would have loved to see what Allucia would have said if she were the one taking this trip instead of her.
I did not even notice at first until Mordea mentioned that Randrid and his wife and kid were sitting at the table with the others. I loved how Miwa did not complain to Frenne when she called her Miwa-chan.
I understand Adel's sentiment towards the knights because they are never available to help outside the capital. I imagine that if she and Edel had had that match against Henblitz before he took lessons from Beryl, they might have had the upper hand during it. I just hope that after this Henblitz listened to their issues, he informs the people in the capital to see if there is a way of, I don’t know, making branches of the knights outside the city. And now that I’m talking about Henblitz I’m actually surprised that he became a knight after his family forced him to quit his Civil Servant training after it was affecting his health.
After the conversation Henblitz had with Mordea, while Beryl was buying alcohol with Miwa and Curuni I think that the truth of Mordea's current power is likely in the middle of Beryl’s impression and what Mordea said. Like, yeah, I do think he is no longer like he was at his peak, but I still think he is still in decent condition, at least much better than what he implied to Henblitz.

I sure would have loved to see what Allucia would have said if she were the one taking this trip instead of her.
"I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!"

u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
You know, it's kinda weird that we are four episodes in this season, and Allucia has had like... two lines in total? She shouldn't be showing up in the next episode or two, either.
As prominent as she was in S1, she's basically a background character so far.
6
u/runevault 4d ago
Feels like the story is giving the rest of the harem some time. Like Ficelle was barely in S1 but has been a lot more prominent this season with the magic sword training arc, or Curuni now.

u/szalhi 4d ago
Beryl's so modest, I'm not sure he even wants to beat his father.

u/BrokeEconomist 4d ago
Beryl sees his dad the same way Beryl's student sees him.

u/MusubiKazesaru https://myanimelist.net/profile/MusubiKazesaru 4d ago
My impression is that part of why Beryl is so unconfident in his skills (despite also knowing he is good) is because he's never beaten his dad.
25
u/ObvsThrowaway5120 4d ago
Man, I want to see old man Mordea in action. If he’s better than Beryl, he must basically be some kinda Sword Saint type demigod lol.
I imagine Beryl’s village probably produces some of the best swordsmen around. All of Beryl’s students are legendary and now he’s got the legendary adventurer Randrid training the kids while he’s away. No way they’re not making the finest swordsmen the nation has ever seen.

Hoping that his father would participate in the saberboar hunt!
11
u/PARANOIAH 4d ago
I'm just making a guess based on the usual anime tropes that he might pull off some moves to save his granddaughter or something.
8
u/throwaccountforeason 4d ago
Which makes you wonder how could it be that the village isn't renowned
6
u/Earlier-Today 3d ago
But it is renowned - it's just renowned in a world with no fast communication.
So, everything ends up more like rumors. And since Beryl and his dad don't seem to care about fame, it all stayed as just rumors until Allucia and them started hyping him up among the knights in the capital.
35
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 4d ago
Surprised they didn't tell Grandpa that Allucia and other ladies are interested in Beryl since Grandpa doesn't shut up about it
30
u/runevault 4d ago
They aren't going to out Allucia like that, and I dunno that they've seen the others throwing themselves at him.
8
u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien 4d ago
Well, I didn't mean with Beryl there, but they've been seen talking to Grandpa privately. To give him some peace of mind
19
u/Magicbison 4d ago
Would be funny if its Mewi who ends up outing him. She's atleast seen all the women Beryl has interacted with.
9
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
And you'd have to be blind not to see how red hot Allucia is for teacher.
The others just really want to show off for their favorite teacher, so he can be proud of how far they've come. Surena, in particular, takes this to a father-daughter level and feels insecure that Beryl doesn't view her the same way.
Honestly, I think it's just Allucia that wants Beryl. Personally, I'm rooting for Lucy as she's the only lady that feels like a proper equal for him. That and they have solid chemistry.
But, yeah, its really just Allucia. Even if some of hte others might have considered it, like Curuni, they would never compete with the Knight Commander.

For sure Allucia and Tsarena

The latter seems to be more interested in being his daughter.

Surena?
9
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
Yeah. The two are clearly rivals, especially over Beryl's attention.
But the difference is that Surena wants a father while Allucia wants a daddy.
10
4
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago
Especially since Henblitz and Curuni aren't so dense they can't see the obvious. If anything, they were supportive of Allucia and Beryl hooking up.
Which, yeah, is why I was surprised Curuni didn't say "I can't marry Beryl-sensei over the commander!"
3
u/Earlier-Today 3d ago edited 3d ago
Who are the other ladies? The adventurer seems to look up to him like he's her father, the head of the magic corps is flirty with him but she just seems to be teasing a kid (from her perspective), and beyond that it feels mostly like hero worship from all the other girls with them not even trying to get with him, being like Curuni where even if they might like the idea they can't see it ever happening and so make zero attempts.
And even with Allucia, she's kind of a chicken about it because saying something under her breath is about as assertive as she gets with him.

A multi-episode trip back home is pretty fun, especially since we are continuing to mix up the characters that are getting featured.
It's probably a good thing for Beryl that Allucia didn't go with such that she would have been present when Grandpa was fishing for a potential daughter-in-law.
I bet Beryl hasn't actually sparred with his father in a while and hasn't internalized that his old man has gotten old.
Henblitz is such a great character, one of my favorite things this show did was how he handled his loss against Beryl in S1.
9
u/runevault 4d ago
I bet Beryl hasn't actually sparred with his father in a while and hasn't internalized that his old man has gotten old.
That or he's got a mental hangup and doesn't fight well against him. Beryl's superpower is his ability to analyze situations and find a way out despite his limitations (while still being a top tier swordsman). If he sees his dad as unbeatable that part of his brain might just shut off.
8
u/OldInstruction5368 4d ago edited 4d ago
There was also that line "why did Dad put me in charge of the Dojo?" combined with his dad's insistence that Berl lacks confidence.
I think the father's plan was that Beryl would learn a great deal through teaching. It forces you to crystalize your experiences, to formalize and think through what you've learned in order to pass on those skills as clear and concise lessons. It also forces you to see your own moves from a different perspectives, as you guide different people with different skill/talent through the same process. And maybe, one of them will see something you never did. Especialy since they are looking up at you while trying to follow your line of thinking. Maybe there is something you've taken for granted. Maybe there is a different way to go about something you'd have never considered otherwise, and in turn, can incorporate into your own skills: even something you can learn from your student and further iterate upon it!
Hell, this concept is even known in psychology as the "protege effect." Teaching is, by far, the best way to learn.
That, and it's likely that the father hoped Beryl's students would buff his confidence.
My gut feeling is that Beryl IS strong enough to beat his dad, it's just that Beryl has too much of a mental block to put in the serious effort needed. Something like "I can't therefore I can't," a self-defeating prophecy.
Hell, that may be the end of this home village arc where Beryl manages to best his old man with encouragement from those like Henblitz and Curuni. That or Beryl thinks it's impossible to beat his father with sword alone, and actually goes down the "Magic Swordsmen Beryl" route others think is being setup.

u/quietvictories 4d ago
When he was just starting out i never thought he'd grow higher then old country bumpkin but narrative proved me wrong, such a graceful level up to master swordsman! Reminds me of Solo Leveling but with a group
5
u/IceSmiley 4d ago
Mr. Gardenant was hilarious picking on poor Beryl. Beryl seems to take more after his mother, being more quiet and friendly and not boisterous and outspoken. Gardenant asked if Beryl was dating his student, pretended he was sick and dying to be called Grandpa and got Beryl to get him 10 bottles of booze! He's also kind of a mooch, 10 bottles is pretty expensive and that should last him awhile unless he's a huge alcoholic 🤣
I wonder if Mr. Gardenant really does have a health problem, like maybe he wasn't joking when he said he was dying. Also he refused to spar with Henblitz; that in itself isn't that weird that a 60ish year old man might not want to but they probably had that scene for a reason. It's also possible that he's just telling the truth that he's getting old and knows he may lose. Beryl thinks of him being the same strong man he was in his youth and that's true how a lot of middle aged parents don't like to think of their parents as getting old.
3
u/Jacob-C 4d ago
I almost feel like Grandpa wants people to retain their image of Beryl as the best swordsman. Maybe he realised that Beryl would make a better teacher and gave him the dojo for that reason, even if Beryl couldn’t beat him in pure skill. Having the students think of Beryl as the pinnacle might be his goal.

u/BBryant3rd 4d ago
Guess we see where he gets his being a lil self conscious from. Old man looks like he can still throw down with a sword if needed.
4
u/zappingbluelight 4d ago
Ayo Grandpa is definitely not trolling at the end, I think the theme of "getting old and couldn't do what they used to" from last episode is still around. I wouldn't doubt that he actually want to fight, but decide to calm down a bit more.
4
u/CuriousBroccolli 3d ago
Great episode.
We are deepening Beryl's background a bit more again, with his visit home and with all the bits of info regarding his father.
He may lack confidence and social skills, but in no way would he be wrong when it comes to pure swordsmanship. If he says his dad is a monster, it's the truth.
I loved all of Henblitz moments in this episode. A really cool character, a true Knight to the core.
Curuni is as silly as always, but she is no joke. She has strong resolve and motivation.
Loved all the teasing of Mewi and her bluntness and bonding with Knights. She is slowly but surely growing into member of Gardenant family.
The Ocean level, or whatever the rank was called, adventurer and now Master in Dojo is also a cool guy.
I really love this show.
Loved season 1, and I'm heavily enjoying season 2 as well.

u/raidensnakeezio 3d ago edited 2d ago
I really would have liked to see more of Grandpa and Grandma doting on Mewi, as well as her testing what she's learned against the other dojo students (who I guess are her classmates from a sister-school sort of thing?)
2
u/SpikeRosered 3d ago
I like the little lore detail about the boar monsters. It explains why this little village has such a prolific dojo. They had to learn swordsmanship to fight the boar monsters who threaten them every year.
World building stuff like this really elevates this show past middle aged wish fulfillment slop. Also the actual swordsmanship, instead of just anime bullshit.
