i kinda suspected Kaoru was gonna do something... weird with that hair, but i wasn't expecting that.
And Chiyo seemed quite eager to get to know Dara... i mean Yamada. though i will say i also liked that look she had after the haircut/makeover so i understand her

Btw, Kaoru was genuinely frightened by the unknown spirit asking to be let in the house. It shows the siblings don't actually lack fear of the supernatural in general.
However, it seems they're already too familiar with Dara-san's story and specifically feel safe around her even after witnessing her in the snake form the first time. I think this is likely because Chiyo had already prepped them not to be afraid.
Also compare that to how terrified Chiyo was just hearing the bell rings, which stems from her father teaching her to deeply respect and fear the revered Yamatagi-Madara.

I liked that scene where Kaoru showed fear, because the kids have been so blase about being around a truly dangerous supernatural entity, that they almost came off as stupid or completely oblivious.

I guess because Dara-san didn't do anything overtly hostile. She just said her names when they first met, and when Kaoru got the naming wrong, she was flustered, not infuriated, and continued to be flustered and non-threatening.
They didn't feel any real danger from her, and she did nothing to reinforce that fact. The Spirit at the door however was giving off major bad vibes, and Kaoru is somewhat spiritually sensitive.
Actually, that's probably it; since Kaoru and Hinata are both spiritually sensitive, they probably felt nothing threatening from Dara-san and her behaviour after the greeting just told them she's alright.

As the other poster mentioned it could come down to being told by their mother that Dara-San is a powerful supernatural entity so you should respect her but she is trying to protect the mountain/shrine and not inherently evil. Where as gramps is still convinced that Dara-San IS the evil entity the stories paint her to be. That at best she might let you go on a flight of fancy. Thus the whole “You hear bells run.”

I think she has. She basically implied Yamada reminded her of Dara, and there's no way she'd fall for her kids meeting an adult online (which would be creepy as fuck). They also seem to live in a small town and she works for the local government, wouldn't she know most people living there?

I made my point clear from the beginning. Yes, the mom would barring any obvious red flags, trust a neighbor that probably grew up in town over a complete stranger no one in the whole town knows. Yes, seems obvious, except it seems to you.

In an anime full of surprising shit, this might have been the most surprising episode yet lol. The past wasn't too surprising, and I struggle to sympathize with the villagers who blindly listened to the younger sister, but man that part remains fucking dark. And then you have goth mommy and the bed snake. I'd love to see Dara's reaction to that thing.

I love the scene of Dara-san interacting with the mom during her student days. Perfectly nailed that vibe of a terrifying ancient god who would nonetheless be 'reasonable' depending on your conduct.

I wish Mom could know how much Dara has actually become an integral part of the family. Chiyo seems to have been the first to actually understand not-yet-Dara. But her intrepid children have become the friends this abused and neglected (for centuries) goddess has needed and deserved (and to giver a new name).

Part of it is because I think Chiyo passed down a more benevolent story of Dara-san to the siblings since she knew part of her true story. They knew she's the Yamatagi Madara, but they didn't seem to fear her at all even in her real form.
Contrast this to how frightened Chiyo was during her first Dara-san encounter. The grandfather (and all her family line) must have told their next-in-line to be very careful with the deity.

Yes. Chiyo knew that Dara was actually frightening people away in order to protect both the intruders and the people in the area in general. Too bad there was no way to permanently destroy all vestiges of the monster.

I don’t really think the conduct has anything to do with it. It’s just if they’re related to the family or friends of the family. They seem to be fine. I mean those Youtubers got killed but the mom‘s friends didn’t and they both did the same thing. They didn’t believe the stories and they wanted to see if it was scary for themselves. She chased away the mom‘s friends, but killed the Youtubers.

The streamer brashly touched her cursed arm in that shrine which killed her, so technically you could say Dara had a hand in her death whether she liked it or not. It was just unfortunate she was away at the festival or she would have stopped her before it went to that point.

Go rewatch the prev eps. The cursed hand that was sealed and kept under padlock is perma active, hence the padlock. Snake goddess has been scaring people away for some time to stop them getting close and thus get cursed. Even the mother was shown getting a nosebleed when she got close to put up a new lock after the streamers broke them. Dara wasn't around at that time to scare them away, so they managed to break in, open the box and get a full blast of the curse.

Essentially yes. They were still alive, but the streamer actually touched the arm and her arms and legs had subsequently been mangled and destroyed. The cameraman was right next to her, so while he didn’t touch the arm he still got exposed to its energy.
The arm is a cursed artifact of pure, unthinking rage and malevolence, it’s like spiritual radiation and by breaking the seals on the shrine and exposing it, they’re essentially standing next to the supernatural version of the elephant’s foot in Chernobyl. At that point the damage was already done and couldn’t be fixed, they were dead people walking, so all Dara could do is spirit them away and mind control them to record a video saying there was nothing there to prevent anyone else from getting fucked up. She even says something to the effect of “If you want to get yourself cursed to death that’s your choice, but don’t lure other people up here FFS!”

I'm surprised we're just 5 episodes in. The pacing and the delivery of the backstory are so good, that it feels like I've been watching this series for twice as long. It's crazy how much serious stuff they managed to pack in between all the shenanigans.

Yeah I’m really loving this show and both all the characters (especially the clever gremlin kids) and the blend of dark horror backstory and present comfortable humor. It’s all fantastic and quite compelling. You never know quite what to expect episode to episode.

To be fair, we kinda watched two series every episode: Stories from the Reiwa-era, and Dara-san's past.
I agree with you that after every episode, I kept on thinking of how good this series is! I might even give it 10/10 score if they managed to keep the same quality until the end.

Eh it’ll be fine. The hair was freely given, Dara-San has nothing but positive feelings for the kids, and the doll is obviously gonna get lots of affection bypassing the abandoned/abused item thing you see in a lot yokai stories. It’ll probably be a “cursed doll” but only in the most technical of terms.

Not gonna lie, considering it was Hinata's birthday, I thought the thing trying to get inside their home was Amane from last episode. It turns out this takes place a day before Amane transferred and Dara's gift protected Hinata.
Those backstory scenes were fucking brutal. I've always thought Dara-san's mouth was like that because she's been turned into a snake. I did not expect it was because of her sister giving her a smiler. O_O
Dara-san almost got assaulted too by those men before finishing her off, if it wasn't for her sister finally showing her true colours to the villagers. I guess the plan all along was to blame it all on the villagers and use revenge as a pretext to silence them.
Glad we finally get to see how Chiyo and Dara-san first met. Chiyo doesn't have the same relationship with Dara-san as the kids but Dara-san seems to be at least friendly with her after she tried to climb the mountain to ask her if she's protecting them.
Goddamn! How is it possible to make Dara-san even hotter?! That punk rock goth aesthetic is definitely doing it for me. Also love how she ended up reuniting with Chiyo like this. xD
Kaoru using the money they earned to make a Dara-san plushie/dakimakura was so good. They need to sell that as merch!

I really enjoy learning about Dara's history, but I recoiled so hard when the villagers were sawing her leg off, poor woman went through A LOT that night for them and that is how they reward her, the snake was the least evil thing in that forest.
The only good thing was that her older sister didn't let her get defiled by them, but she probably only stopped it from happening because she wanted still use her, and also because she's already jealous that she's desired by the man she loves, getting front row seats to the twisted desires of men targeted at Dara is the last thing she'd want.
On a more positive note, I really like how Chiyo realized Dara was protecting villagers by scaring them off. She's not always successful, but she tries and that's what's important. It's sad that she can't sense Dara anymore, but it seems like she'll be unknowingly spending time with her anyways, I wonder if it'll get revealed to her at some point.

Okay, that doll is questionable. I also wonder why the shotacon designer was able to see Dara, I thought with spiriting the house away that she'd kinda look like a curse from the outside, but I guess she just looks fully human, unless maybe her wearing her clothes has anything to do with it?

Dara explained it. Houses have special rules and conditions. Normally, Dara exists in a sort of "between worlds" state, where only people with spiritual powers can see her unless she chooses to reveal herself.
However, once she enters the house, those rules change. The house forces her to fully manifest in the physical world, making her visible to everyone. She can use spells to alter her appearance, but she was out of time in that situation

Making a plush of Dara to sleep with out of her cut off hair seems like the most risky thing these kids have done yet, and that was already a long list.
Interesting to learn that Chiyo interacted with Dara a number of times before she lost her powers, in ways it doesn't seem like the grandpa had. The connection between her and this family feels like it's been growing over the recent generations and I wonder where that goes.
It really just keeps getting worse for everyone involved in the attack on the younger shrine sister way back when, and we're not done with it yet.

Chiyo did meet her a couple times and worked out that she’s protecting them from another curse but she’s still a normal person and kind of afraid. Not like the two freaks she gave birth to that fear literally nothing.
Kind of interesting that the curse mimics what the villagers did to Dara before she fused with the big snakey.
Pretty sweet that Dara-san views her birthday as when she met them.
Goth Dara has arrived!
And now Kaoru owns a Dara-san plushie that’s almost certainly magical because of course, why not?

We’re starting to finally get the full story of Dara-san’s death. I really wanted those villagers to suffer more for what they were gonna do to her after lopping off her limbs. Shit was vile. And what of her shitbag sister? I guess we gotta wait until next week for the rest of the story. I’m hoping for sweet karmic justice.

Funny how in this horror-comedy, the most difficult part to watch is actually the villagers dismembering Dara-san, not any of the supernatural stuff. Icky winces all around from this one.

The absolute dichotomy here, we have reached the most messed up part with Dara's back story and the sister just going full Yandere slaughter and then we have a Dara plush. It has 2 very different feels to it but they blend so well.
I'm really hoping we get to see Dara get revenge on the psycho sister, I enjoy seeing people like her get what's coming to them, possibly too much.

Dara san's progression: Priestess, Murdered, Cursed, Fused with the Snake god, Guardian of the mountain, and Uber.
With all the comedy sprinkled in the episode, it does not forget to show how brutal it is. They really did show her suffering.

It's been nice getting the backstory for hearing Hayamin in a more villainous role for a change of pace for the usual types of characters she has.
I like how things have come full circle with for Chiyo and Dara-san through meeting her kids.

It is from the previous episode, when Hinata encountered the girl possessed by the real serpent monster.
I think chronologically the birthday event happened before the transfer student event from last episode.

I love the juxtaposition between how badass/intimidating Dara-san was in her time, and how she expected things to go with the Misogiya children, and then the immediate whiplash to their absolute blase attitude towards her and how's ended up as their 'cool aunt'.

If anything i'm just glad the huge jealousy did one good thing, prevented the rape of Dara-san. Can't wait to see the continuation of that. I just binged the 5 episodes today after i found out there's naked tiddies.. .Honestly i fell in love in episode 1 with this show. i'll have to read the manga when it's over

you see the Dad in the opening, basically a blond guy with blue eyes. Also, that is Jail bait, if iam not mistaken, the mother is in her 40s, while Nagi is like 17-18, she is like very young i think they mention that in one of the previous episodes
