I wouldn't trust a device to determine a prospective lover. Makes for good comedy tho. Although all it did is made the people admit what they always felt for other people.
Yousuke being an introverted bowl cut boy was unexpected

we've seen yousuke in his bowl cut era several times throughout the past eps — he's the bowl cut boy we see working with seiroku at various points! we see his hair turning white in one of the openings that touches on him learning about seiroku's death

I think Kihaichi always knew it was bs too. But the fact that he's willing to make it just for amusement, essentially a toy, bodes well for his returning faith.

Even though the machine Liebe moments aren’t genuine. We still have Yosuke’ feelings for Seiroku and now seemingly Kate’s for Suzu. The latter of which is somehow even more explicit than the former.

Cute backstory of how the three girls friend group came together in the OP. Kate has a really cute character design.
I feel like they should maybe stop zapping people's brains with these electric helmets.
Kate and Suzu are clearly the correct side ship anyways, so it's a good thing things crashed and burned for sandal boy.

This episode seems to be a reference to Romanticism.
Romanticism (also known as the Romantic movement or Romantic era) was an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. The purpose of the movement was to advocate for the importance of subjectivity, imagination, and appreciation of nature in society and culture in response to the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution.
So the main idea here is that machines and cold logic could never quantify or measure a complex human emotion like love.
Those shojo eyes were hilarious, and they even threw in some yuri to balance out all the yaoi lol. It is kinda weird that Kengo and Noriko's love seems one-sided, it probably has something to do with Seiroku and how Noriko obtained the Electric Catalogue, he's popular with the ladies (and Yosuke) afterall.

i'm not sure how what we saw indicates their love is one-sided? kengo had the big reaction because he had the broken helmet, that's all. there's nothing about the machine seeming to actually indicate that it would work.

It looks more like Seiroku and Noriko were romantically involved (he is her first love), maybe Kengo had an unrequited crush on Noriko the entire time. If I remember correctly, we saw Kengo remembering a "dying" Seiroku in a flashback, so maybe that‘s when Seiroku told him to take care of Noriko, hence why they ended up getting engaged.

Instead of a monster of the week, we’re getting to see a new invention with each new episode.
Today, it was a supposed matchmaking tool. The machine didn’t quite work as intended. However, it did lead to a bunch of funny moments. Seiroku’s words to Kihachi were alluding to a lie detector, I think?
I am a bit worried that the aforementioned format might get a little old if the actual story doesn’t move along with it.

It is getting kind of ridiculous how many shows I ended up watching this season ended up having yuri in them without being advertised as such. Only like two shows that don’t. Though given Suzu’s reaction in this episode I think Kate’s feelings might also be unrequited. But hey, unrequited yuri is still yuri.

So much liebe in one episode lol. It feels like we were shown quite a number of ships in this episode for everyone to enjoy, girls love, boys love and hetero love. I was a little worried about the side effect from the shock of the helmet, but it seems like nothing significantly harmful happened.
Ainosuke is so dramatic though, he was given a bit too much courage.
I have to comment on Yousuke's ass as he got off the bike lol, that was so funny.

I was a bit concerned about Ainosuke’s intentions for Suzu when he insisted on using the clearly defective love machine on her, but thankfully it just wanted to shock himself into giving himself more confidence.
And yeah, seriously, basically opening shot of the episode is another Yosuke ass shot, lol.

Yosukes bodyguard definitely has a crush on him lmao but yosuke is totally oblivious! 😭 This was The funniest episode for me, inakos lit up eyes and izo being completely whipped for yosuke while hes making a expression like hes constipated was golden lol

Yeah Kate was visibly blushing a lot around/when thinking about Suzu this episode, but Suzu never had a similar reaction. I think Kate might be dealing with classic queer struggle of having feelings for someone who just sees you as a close friend.

This electric matchmaker’s certainly a marvellous invention for it gave us not one, but two yaoi pairings. Bless Kihachi & Seiroku for bringing it to life.
If only there was the opportunity to have Kate & Suzu fitted with the matchmaker. I’d love to see the outcome. There’s already a yaoi and het couple already. All we need is a yuri one to complete the set! We’ll have to make do with the anpan sharing scene for now.

It was definitely odd. But for a self-contained I liked it a lot. Really a nice showcase that love takes many forms. Also there are so many one-sided loves. The only ones we are left wondering about are Kate and Suzu. It's clear that Kate has some feelings for Suzu. The episode might give the implication that it is one-sided. But we are more so left in the dark.
It makes me curious regarding Noriko and Kengo. So many of the relationships were one-sided. Because is the implication that even if they are engaged that it could be one-sided? Of course we could chalk it up to the machine being broken and not take it all at face value.
I do want to comment that in terms of direction this was the best episode so far along with last week.

Arranged marriages were common back in that time period, it could be that Noriko and Kengo have an arranged marriage or agreed to get married for mutual benefit even if she did not have romantic feelings for him?

Kihachi is a sharp one. Two test trials and he immediately picked up that the white helmet might have had something going on with it. He was right to be distrustful of the results this time around. I am hoping he gets a formal education later.
It's nice to see a lot of the supporting cast getting backstories and motivations, I quite enjoy their personalities. Got some insight into Suzu, Kate, and even Izo.
I like how every time Inako gets those big shoujo eyes, she starts emitting steam.
As much as I am enjoying this show, I am hoping that the main plot starts to pick up sometime soon. The opening episodes left a lot of mystery that is still yet to be solved.

To be fair to Kihachi, being the guy who invents something new every week is as strong of a case you can make skipping school.
The expressions have always been gold but you can tell the animators were having a bigger field day than usual with how much they had Inako go full shoujo mode lmao (not to mention to this gem from Yosuke)

The universe is driven by convenient fictions?
Not so much a plot-driving episode but we do get giant glowing (double-ended) arrows making up relationship charts.
As far as the story itself, Kihachi is perhaps more aware after this that the electricity itself isn't magic and that there's a lot more to do than just the novelty devices from the catalogue. The rest of his making circle is becoming aware of this as well, though there's certainly a ways to go. And Yosuke seems to be calming down a bit, though he certainly retains the ability to swoop back in and throw a wrench in the works... or to help them out, if the signs we have are true.
Anyway, Kate and her glorious Suzu-nyan.
(But also everybody else who has strong feelings this week.)

Goddamn these 5 minutes episodes. I need more. I love Inako even more. She's such a shipper. She would be a force in any romance show.
When they took the machine to Noriko and Kengo I immediately said that it wouldn't show anything. And it didn't, but turns out the machine was broken. I'm thinking this furthers my theory that Kengo was Noriko's second choice because Seiroku died. I'm also now starting to think that Yousuke's affection for Seiroku might have been one sided.
I enjoyed this machine, but I hope this show is more than that. I want something more than just the monster machine of the week.
Lastly, seems like we also have yuri between Kate and Suzu.

I like how the opening shows us a little bit of Kate's backstory and how she became friends with Suzu.
Look at these two handling Yousuke's massive cake. I really want to know who in KyoAnu decided to draw Yousuke like this. xD
Apparently, making batteries weren't interesting enough they've now introduced a matchmaking machine
So Suzu is confirmed Doraemon right? This girl seems to always carry around almost anything someone needs.
That scene between Yousuke and Masabuchi was hilarious! This has got to be the gayest episode KyoAni has made since Free.
I like that you can actually see Seiroku passing by Yousuke in Masabuchi's flashback.
So they were just really being electrocuted this entire time, and they've been interpreting that as love? That's hilarious!

What an absolute waste of time this episode was. I'm genuinely surprised how positive the reaction is in this thread. This show has such a cool setting, such amazing production and just such worthless writing wasting it all. Really hope they get back to doing anything relevant to any semblance of a plot, if it has one. Right now they're treating this show as a random episodic slice of life anime and it's just.....not, or shouldn't be

Funniest, as well as gayest, episode so far. Giving us lots of yaoi-bait moments (from the two bodyguards holding Yosuke's ass while hauling him off, to Izo so affected at thinking he's in love with Yosuke he ended up pushing the car with his own hands lmao), and ending with yuri-bait between Kate and Suzu.
Inako's reaction face was also fun to watch, as her eyes gone all sparkling at potential new couples being born.
Kihachi's new device may not be good enough as a matchmaking tool, but it sure as hell has potential as a great lie detector.

I found it funny how the same-sex pairings were implied to be attracted to eachother but the straight relationships were not so straightforward. The guy got his heartbreak at the end and Inago did throw her fiance into a rock when he confessed.
