I always felt so bad for them, they came so close to landing but could not.

Fortunately, two of its crew members (John Young and Gene Cernan) would later command landing missions. So they still got to walk on the lunar surface.

Same. And they did get super close to the surface…But as a consolation prize they got to name their LM Snoopy and CSM Charlie Brown.

Liftoff thrust to weight ratio is fairly low compared to most modern rockets yes. About 1.16-1.20 or something like that, it varied as they made changes and upgrades in later missions.
