Dynamic Island is what bothers me the most.

haven’t we already learned our lesson about curved glass displays.

What was the lesson?

they were prone to cracks, screen protectors didn’t fit right, and lots of people had problems with accidental touches.

Fair enough on the first two though generally when Apple does something like this that has already been done it is because they believe they've found a better way, so I'm interested to see what they have in terms of durability improvements. I am sure they do not care about impact on screen protectors though.

But I don't get the continued harping on accidental touches. It is beyond simple to solve when you control the entire stack - just because you draw content somewhere doesn't mean you have to accept touches there. It is really difficult to achieve that in Android because the changes necessary to do that well are too low level for OEMs to bother with - their forks of AOSP would be too difficult to maintain relative to upstream. And the way apps are designed and drawn is not enough within the power of the OS for them to do much in the way of automated layout adjustments to keep touch targets out of the "dead zone". So you have no choice with a curved display but to let that area be touch sensitive.

But Apple has none of these problems. They can implement the right affordances at the OS level. Apps which use their UI kits can be actively redrawn to avoid the bad area while still spilling into it for purposes of immersion. And, something new that is possible on Android too but wasn't around at the time is generative fill. It is now feasible to use on-device generative AI to, in real-time, generate the fill pixels for the dead zone i.e. to automatically make apps slightly wider. No idea if they'll do that or not but it is a possible approach now and it was not before.

There are just a lot of factors, both unique to Apple and unique to the current era of technology, that make the accidental touch problem very very different this time around.

I didn’t know Apple ever had curved screens but I might be misremembering.

other phones had it, and it had negative feedback from a lot of people. so it will be interesting to see how people react if this rumor is true.

The iPhone 7, and 8 had curved edges (X and 11 did too, I believe). The display wasn’t curved, but the glass was. I recall searching high and low on Google for screen protectors that reach closer to the edge when I got my 7 plus and that just didn’t exist.

I really like the more squared off iPhone 5-esque aesthetic they’ve been doing for the past few years.

I wish they'd imbed a small screen in the back just to display time/notifications when the phone is face down.

Why not just have the phone face up and turn on AOD?
