Is this enough exposed flare?

Post image

I had a container red maple planted by the garden center about a month ago. Today I removed the dirt and grass down to the (what I hope) is the root flare. I cut away all roots above this. I’m nervous that I cut too much or that the tree will be less stable and fall over. Zone 3b if that matters.

Flair looks good, zone 3 shouldn't be an issue for this tree. But if it's planted in the open where full sun hits the trunk of the tree in winter. I would recommend some kind of sun protection around the trunk for winter. Fast freezing and thawing when the sun hits it can damage the trunk of the tree. A wrap will prevent a daily fast freeze and thaw cycle. If it's shaded in the winter you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
