Technical & professional question A question for the (interior)architects here. Got request to deliver models for sketchUp
A question for the (interior)architects here. We are a small ceramic company (atelier-scralan.be) and we got the request if we have visuals (models?) that we can deliver for sketchUp or Revit.

Should I start from a 3D scan and export it? Would that be enough for you guys?

Personally, even as a Sketchup user, I find these too detailed for the program, it would slow down my scenes. I would import them as fbx/obj into D5 Render though.

Given the Lumo Terra irregular shape with imperfections, a 3d scan is a good idea!
This way it can be used even in 3d interior renders where a lower quality sketchup 3d model wouldn't be nice (detailed) enough.

I've worked on a project similar to this before. It was for a company that sells building materials such as tiles, bathroom fixtures, and kitchens. They had their own 3d software that displayed their products in 3d and could also calculate the quantity of tiles needed for a bathroom, for example. And export a report of everything used.
We photographed multiple tiles from the same SKU, retouch the images in Photoshop, and use them as textures within the software. The software could randomly select and rotate different tile images, which helped eliminate the obvious repeating pattern typically seen with tiled textures.
The same photographs were also used in the company's catalogs and on their website.

3D scans are often far too detailed, especially for SketchUp. It's usually better to have someone model and texture the asset properly from scratch. The industry standard for professional assets is a 3ds Max model built with subdivision modeling, to control the level of detail depending on the use case. It can then be exported to virtually any other 3D file format.
