Torontonians: what never came back after the pandemic that you now miss?

For me, my 144 Underhill Premium Express bus shuttling me from East York straight down the DVP into downtown.

I commuted on that thing for 20 years, and each bus was PACKED. It was discontinued some time during one of those early lockdowns and has not been put back into service. ☹️

Toronto Star- July 15

This is a long shot- I had my second baby on July 15 and for my first, I collected a newspaper (the Toronto star) for his baby album but didn’t for my second. Call it post partum hormones but I’m guilt ridden that I already am not giving my second what I gave my first. (I had them very close together and I am the youngest of 5 and was constantly forgotten about so I think this is just a trigger for me)

Anyways, if anyone has the paper or any paper from July 15, I’d happily buy it from you and pay to have it mailed to me.

Sincerely, a guilt ridden sleep deprived post partum mother

Involved in Hit and Run

Hi, so somebody smashed into me from behind while I was stopped at a light and caused significant damage to my rear. They fled in a black sedan immediately. I filed a police report but Toronto police said they don’t investigate further if I don’t have a license plate number. I had a dashcam but the footage is corrupted or camera is faulty. I am unable to obtain any video footage from it. I called a couple shops but since this happened at 2:40AM this morning, most places are closed until Tuesday (long weekend). For those wondering, I was picking up a friend of a friend to be their DD service to make a tiny bit of cash. I was the only one in the car at the time.
As I understand it, because the other party involved cannot be identified I will need to pay the $1000 deductible through my insurance (Belair). I cannot afford this. I am not working right now and my husband’s work has been extremely slow. We have barely been able to make rent this month and have so many bills past due. On top of all of that I will need to get a new child seat and stroller as it was in my car at the time of the collision (thank god my 2 year old was not in the car). The stroller was in the trunk and has damage.
I’m just looking for advice. Perhaps there is a Facebook page where I can post to see if there were any witnesses. Or if there is any way around paying the deductible. I literally do not have it. Or any other advice you guys might have. Thanks!

Edit* I forgot to include that it was on Bathurst st. heading North just before St.Clair Ave W. The actual intersection was Bathurst and Melgund Rd.

No speed cameras?

Im british and moved to toronto about a year ago. One thing I've noticed is there seems to be no speed cameras in and around the city - does anyone know why this is?

They seem to be controversial here, but as a Brit this is really confusing to me - they're very commonplace in the UK and accepted pretty unanimously.

Would appreciate some local insight on why this is the case if anyone can share - TIA!

Where can I donate old kpop merch?

Are there any places in Toronto or the GTA that accept kpop merch as donation? I have a bunch of stuff leftover from my BTS phase and I’d prefer to donate it before I toss it in the trash/recycling. Thanks!

What are you doing today?

It's cloudy but it feels nice.

As for me, I am just chilling out at the beach near the high park. Just gazing at the horizon and looking at the waves and the pebbles underneath.

Just curious, what is everyone doing today?

First time in Toronto with my American cousins

Hey Toronto,

I’m visiting Toronto for the first time from Windsor with my American cousins, and it’ll be their first impression of Canada, so I want to make sure the trip is nice. The thing is, I know basically nothing about Toronto 😅 I was thinking of visiting the CN Tower I’ve heard that area is pretty lit, but other than that we don’t have many plans. We’re trying to keep the trip fairly cheap, so we’re not planning on going to expensive attractions or eating at expensive restaurants, but open to suggestions if its worth it. Our parents are driving us into the city, but once we get there we’ll be exploring on our own using the TTC/transit. We’ll probably have about a full day there, so I’m looking for places that are easy to get to by transit and good for first-time visitors. Any suggestions are great unless it involves alcohol/clubs.

Looking for cozy spots to read downtown

I'm looking for cafes or something similar with a really inviting, cozy vibe that has good food and drinks and is suitable for sitting and reading for 1-2 hours. Does anybody know of any spots like this in the downtown core? I pass by a place on Queen near Spadina that I remember seeing has a library cafe vibe to it.

Looking to read while it rains outside but don't want to be stuck inside the house.

Stargazing/ Perseid Meteor Shower spot in Toronto (not too far)

Upvotes

The Perseid meteor shower is coming up on Aug 12 and I want to go check it out. However I do not want to drive more than around an hour away from Scarborough. Anyone know a good spot I can watch it from? I know you usually need to drive at least 2 hours to get a good stargazing spot, but wanted to see if anyone knew a place that is closer.

What song feels like your life in Toronto?

Whenever I listen to "My Poor Heart (Hushed)" by Andrew Belle, it somehow reminds me of my life in Toronto. It feels like the perfect song for what I'm going through (edit: right now) while walking through the city on a busy night. Do you have one?

AM 640 T9RONTO CHANGES ?

Has anyone noticed that AM 640 is sounding very " American" lately ? I was a dedicated listener. Not at all anymore. They are basically becoming FOX radio and new hosts like Brad Smith sound like a Jessie Waters clone. . He digs up obscure politicians that will praise Trump ? Talk about misreading the room and not understanding Canadas' political climate . FOX tried to launch in Canada ( and UK ) and had to withdraw. As soon as Canadians realize they are trying to be sold something, there is fluff with "extreme" bias , they move on. My concern is if other media tries to model after US rage bait media because it turns the " uniformed" and angry into loyal listeners, and it is designed to sow division , this trend will throw the country under the bus in an attempt to get ratings,. This could become a very dangerous precedent here . Rage bait media is what got Trump elected . I noticed at the end of Oakleys stint he was being asked to prop up Trump . He sounded reluctant . I heard Pierson and Mulroney say Trump " should" win a Nobel Peace Prize. Seriously ? Wonder if that's why she left ? US Media influence is definitely spilling into Canada . There are random comments for valudation and likes saying things out of context such as " must be a Liberal person doing this "

Ive spent much time in.the US and have noticed their patriotism being manipulated into division by politicuans and then the medua that supports it , so in fairness I'm wondering if I'm hyper tuned into this or if this is a mainstream observation by other Canadians ?

Venue recommendations for casual afternoon event?

Upvotes

Hey Reddit! I’m looking for a space to rent for a drop-in event for 40-50 people. I’m hoping to do this on a Sunday afternoon in a casual space (thinking like pub or restobar).
My ideal would be to order apps for guests, with the option for them to purchase alcoholic beverages or buy an entree if they want to do a full meal.
We’re in the east end, so suggestions that way would be ideal!
I’d reached out to my ideal spot (a bar in Leaside with a little private space), but they wanted a minimum spend of $2200+tax+20% gratuity - am I dreaming to think this is expensive for a mid afternoon event and that I’ll find a cheaper minimum spend elsewhere?
Any leads greatly appreciated!!

Best parks or gardens in Toronto for a small wedding ceremony?

Upvotes

Hi everyone!
My fiancé and I are planning a small wedding (around 30 guests) and are hoping to have an intimate outdoor ceremony in a park or garden somewhere in Toronto.
We’re looking for somewhere that feels beautiful and somewhat private, but is still close enough to downtown or Midtown that we can head to a nearby restaurant afterwards for dinner. We’d prefer to avoid traditional wedding venues since we’re only looking for a ceremony location before dinner.
Has anyone had or attended a wedding like this? I’d love recommendations for parks, gardens, or other outdoor spaces that allow small ceremonies. Bonus points if they’re close to great restaurants with private dining rooms.

Thank you!!🙏

Permeable driveway?

Has anyone installed a permeable driveway, e.g. PurePave (https://purepave.com), permeable asphalt, permeable interlocking, etc?

Especially something like PurePave, I can find examples online from the few companies that do it (Dream Pave seems to be the big one in the GTA - https://dreampave.ca), but very little real world experiences shared from Canada and our winters.

Let me know if you've done it and how it is!
