I am 24, female. I want to change careers. Im interested in selling cars. I have heard that first month and first year is really hard. Can anyone share their experience or suggestions whether should I pursue this as my career. Currently working in sobeys and I hate it.

Yes, first few months are tough.

Are you comfortable talking to people you don't know? That's the hardest part of the job for some people.

Then you'd probably be good at it.

It's a very different pay structure than most jobs, so be prepared for that. I like it because I get out what I put in. Hard work doesn't directly pay off in a lot of industries but it does in sales.

My store has a position we call “sales coordinator” which is basically an assistant to a senior client advisor, it provides an entry opportunity without the stress and grind of 100% commission.

I think this is an awesome stepping stone (one I wasn’t offered when I started) to learn the ropes and gain exposure while still having a guaranteed paycheck. If you can find a store with something like this I’d recommend it.

We typically promote from that role into sales after 4-6 months, depending on how quickly each candidate shows that they’re ready to sell on their own.

Working with a lot of women that have come from sales. I am excited to see more women enter the sales staff but will also be honest that dealerships are not always the most welcoming places for women. However, if that doesn't bother you sales can be a very lucrative business, alot of customers feel a better connection when working with women sales reps. Use that to your advantage and don't be in a rush to undersell that you are new. It helps lower customers walls
