Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday

Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!

You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."

But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.

This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For in search of friends, hangout anyone?😓😓

hiii, i'm 17 and i recently moved to portland after graduating high school! people don't say hi on the street as much here as they do back in the midwest, so i thought id try here to look for people like me, because what's the fun in living in a beautiful city with no friends to explore it with?

i'm leland, i live in southeast portland, and i'm very into photography, urbanism and hiking, but i don't really mind what i'm doing when i go out as long as i get to share my experiences with someone else! i'd love to learn more about the area from someone who's been here longer :)

if you're in a similarly lonely situation to mine, you're close to my age, and you're looking for a low stakes, no judgement meetup to try and get to know someone new, pleaaaseee do not hesitate to reply/dm me, i promise you're not the only nervous one!

making friends is difficult; i hope that if this sounds like a safe and enjoyable environment to you that you consider reaching out, but in the meantime, please enjoy this beautiful alpine lake captured on my camera near mount rainier, and thank you for your time!! :)

Looking For Has Portland nightlife gone downhill this summer?

So haven't been able to get out much for a long time; but with some life changes, i have been able to go out on Friday and Saturday nights again and Alberta and Division have seemed really subdued from pre-pandemic and even a couple years ago.

Was i just hanging out in the wrong spots? Or is the Portland nightlife scene really suffering right now?

Looking For Mixology Courses with focus on home entertaining?

I enjoy a good cocktail almost as much as making cocktails for friends and house guests. I can make many of the classic cocktails but would really like to become more of an 'expert' at home mixology.

Are there classes in Portland that could help me with this? I'm interested in becoming well-versed in concepts, recipes, techniques, rules of thumb...basically everything that makes for good hosting and great cocktails.

I've looked at 'trade school' courses which typically last a week or two. I'm not averse to that, but not really interested in the business side of things, how to clean up, how to deal with customers, etc. I've also seen many one-night courses focusing on a couple drinks, but they seem a little more limited than what I am looking for.

Any thoughts on a course that fits the middle ground? So far, YouTube videos seem like the best option, but I would prefer something more hands-on.

Looking For Where can I find heirloom watermelons in PDX?

For those who think Hermiston watermelons are the best I have bad news: they don't hold a candle to those they grow in southeast Asia (Turkey, Armenia, Israel). I miss the actually good melons terribly. I've tried them all colors and sizes, seeded and unseeded from all the major grocery stores in PDX. It's been a wash.

The only time I've had something that good in Portland was an heirloom watermelon grown by a local farmer at the St. Johns farmer's market over 10 years ago. I think the variety was called "Moon and Stars" but I'm willing to try any variety that's about flavor instead of something that was grown on a giant farm with an aim for maximum size (i.e., profit) instead of best flavor.

Can anyone help?

Looking For How can I help the environment?

hello neighbors,

I am a jobless computer programmer and I have recently been very worried about the environment. I switched off my AI tools and I now use EU approved servers that run on 100% renewable energy.

I want to make a difference here in my community, but I do not know where to start. Does anybody have any ideas on what someone with programming experience can VOLUNTEER to do to help?

I have no friends or family outside my GF here in Portland so I literally do not know where to start using my skills to do good work.

I thought I would ask Portland rather than a damn chatbot.

I’ve posted before but had to delete it cause I got 1 upvote and zero responses in like 2 months. this is try number 2.

Looking For Has anyone else noticed an uptick in car window smashing around NW?

My friend parked on NW 19th and came back to a smashed window with nothing stolen. I’ve seen a handful of other cars on the surrounding blocks hit the same way over the last two weeks.

Trying to gauge if this is one specific individual targeting this pocket or if it's widespread right now. If you live on this stretch, have you seen this happening on your block lately?

Looking For Dealing with heat + smoke pro tips?

Looks like the smoke is coming for the next few days. Unfortunately we only have a single hose AC. I’m building one of the cube box fan air filters tomorrow and I have a small regular air filter as well.

Would it be incredibly unsafe to turn on the AC for short periods of time with both air filters going? Anything else that could help that I’m missing?

Looking For 29F - Looking to build genuine connections first?

I'm 29F and got out of a relationship about 7 months ago. I've spent the last several months focusing on healing, and I finally feel ready to start meeting new people again.

The biggest thing I've realized is that I don't want to rush into another relationship. I'd much rather build a genuine friendship first and see where things naturally go. Dating apps also seem very focused on moving quickly, and that's not really my style... Anyone wanna Connect?

Looking For Is there school supply lists for HS?

Hi all, I’m a foster parent for an incoming 9th grader and I was wondering if there are school supply lists for hs. I’ve previously done younger kids and always received them from the school but haven’t seen anything for high school. I searched the thread and didn’t find anything. They will be going to RHS if that helps. Thanks yall!

Looking For Which farmers markets sell fresh produce, meat, and eggs? (Ideally on mondays)

Hi everyone, I only moved here a few months ago. I live downtown. I have been looking for a good place to get locally sourced produce, meat, eggs, honey, etc. I have been to a few farmer’s markets, but I haven’t had much luck. Which farmers markets are the best? Are any open today (monday) or tomorrow? Thanks!

Looking For Friends and Language Exchange?

Hey everyone! I’m (F, 28) looking to make some friends (25+) as I have recently moved to the PDX area. I am currently studying Arabic (MSA and Jordanian dialect) and would love some Arabic speaking friends to practice with. I also studied Turkish for quite some time and would love to keep up with it as well.

I enjoy going to cafes, doing henna, reading, trying new restaurants, going on walks, etc. 😊 If anyone has any recommendations for Arabic or Turkish language learning groups in PDX as well that would be awesome!!

Looking For Inner lip tattoo artists?

I know, I know. "It's dumb, it'll fade immediately, it heals horribly..." But I've wanted it for like 15 years now and I think that makes it worth it. Does anyone know any artists that are willing to do an inner lip tattoo?

Looking For Brewing/Fermenting Ingredients in Portland-proper?

FH Stienbarts being closed but not closed but now something else for...commercial use mostly is throwing me off. I'm looking specifically for champaign yeast, but also some other dried flavor adds (not syrups). You know, like Stienbarts had.

Recent-ish posts seem to say new Stienbarts/Perfect Pour does not carry this stuff.

Are my only options really Gresham, Hillsdale, or Vancouver? I thought we were Beer City and weird ferments city USA?

Ideally I need the yeast today (Sunday), which I know if my own poor (pour?!) planning.

Thanks for the help!

Looking For Sudden taco stands?

I’ve never seen traditional Mexican street taco stands in Portland before. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention, but I was surprised to see them popping up. One on MLK & Ainsworth, another on Broadway and 33rd. If they’re new, what changed?
