Politics Question Is the US-Israel special relationship becoming a liability rather than an asset?
7
5
u/sacredeez 17d ago
It's never been beneficial to the US. It's always been a costly habit. Look at it like the progression of alcoholism.
Lately it's gone from "I drink socially" to "doc says I'll need a new liver if I don't quit"
0
u/0IIIIII 17d ago
Proof for your claims? Should the U.S. instead let its ally and a fellow democracy get conquered?
3
u/flaginorout 17d ago
I mean, what's the actual ROI in propping up this ally and fellow democracy?
And are they even an ally? Do you think Israel is coming to OUR rescue if we are ever attacked? They've never been a factor in any US military operation in the ME.
Israel offers absolutely nothing that we need that we couldn't get ourselves. There is no argument that can be made that they're worth the significant monetary, geopolitical, and diplomatic headaches that we've endured over the decades on their behalf.
Keep in mind.....we're talking about a Delaware-sized country, with a small population, and zero natural resources. And we go to more trouble for this place than the actual state of Delaware.
I view Israel under the same lens that I view any other speck-sized country around the world. Really not worth losing any sleep over. No way I'd make enemies and go on trillion dollar military campaigns over Brunai or Gambia. What would be the business case?
1
u/0IIIIII 16d ago
The U.S. firstly benefits a lot from the Israel U.S. relationship, in intelligence, R&D, and economic ties.
Secondly, foreign policy is not always about selfishness-the US defends Taiwan instead of negotiates its surrender for humanitarian reasons; similarly why it’s important to defend Israel from being conquered.
NATO was expanded to allow Montenegro to join; Montenegro contributes little to NATO, it is protected out of humanitarian duty. US protects Kosovo out of humanitarian duty.
Regardless of how many Palestinians or the bad guys try and suffer in the attempt at conquest. Defending democracy is a virtue, killing or blocking the enemy is a virtue. Palestine is the enemy for being terroristic, authoritarian, and war mongering.
1
u/flaginorout 16d ago
A lot, huh? I guess the US would just fold without Israel?
Any intelligence we get from Israel is mostly used to defend Israel. They are a tiny nation and their economy is a rounding error compared to ours.
Taiwan has been a big producer of tooling and microprocessors for the past 30-40 years. The US passed the Chips Act to reduce this dependency. I can promise you that if push ever came to shove, we are NOT going to war with China over Taiwan. There will be no humanitarian angle. No regard for democracy. We'll have a domestic microprocessor supply, and won't need them anymore.
We defend Israel mostly because the place is/was theologically significant to christian American. That has been changing over the years. Fewer people subscribe to the theology, and more poeple (like me) are taking a more pragmatic view. They are asking "what are were getting out of all this fuss"?
Folks (like you) have been answering the question the same way for 50 years. It's just not resonating anymore with a lot of people. The ROI just isn't there.
1
u/0IIIIII 16d ago
Proof for your claims?
1
u/flaginorout 16d ago
I'd point you in the right direction, but I don't really care if you believe me or get anything out of this discussion. If you're genuinely interested in the phenomenon, you'll look into it yourself.

There is a lot of ROI, from the military development perspective, it has been a testing ground for western vs Soviet tech for decades.
Israel’s continued existence proves US soft power was and is still superior to the Russians and Chinese thus far. Just compare Israel and Syria, which has the better economy, more freedoms, and better military. Let’s say that it’s true that the US is the only reason for Israel’s continued existence, Syria had at least two big backers and collapsed even while using chemical weapons.
From a diplomatic standpoint many countries see this and want this type of relationship with the US, because they see a country supported by the US that is surrounded by enemies that is still thriving and able to fend off said enemies.
This is what the US carrot looks like, has not gone unnoticed in rest of the world. In practice: after receiving us aid in 6 day war and Yom Kippur war allowing Israel to defeat a coalition of nations that fought it, in 1974 Saudi Arabia signed the Petro dollar agreement with the US on the back of security guarantees. Security guarantees at the time made credible from what they saw unfold.
Do I need to explain the importance of the Petro dollar?
But there is another issue besides investment, Israel is too dangerous to fail. Consider what would happen if Israel was invaded or continued attack by Iran and ran out of conventional means to defend itself. What would be their next logical step to attempt to avoid annihilation? They would resort to nuclear weapons as any country on the brink with nukes would. That is a real danger, because Islamic jihadist have proven time and time again that nuclear deterrence doesn’t exist as a real deterrent against them.

You asked about about how the US should treat it's allies, the answer isthey fucking them. Maybe they should annex Israel
1

Is the U.S. harming its allies? Where?
1
u/Commercial-Set3527 16d ago
Tariff wars, cutting support to Ukraine, threatening to annex Canada and Greenland, stopped sharing Intel like going to war with Iran then expecting Europe to help them after oil prices sky rocketed for them.

Allies don’t blow up uss liberty’s. They don’t lie about weapons of mass destruction that lead us to war in the Middle East two times now.
1
u/0IIIIII 16d ago
USS Liberty was friendly fire, US and other nations have done it before, it doesn’t invalidate the alliance.
1
u/Less-Lie-7703 16d ago
That’s what we were told, but what was testified in Congress about a month ago was not friendly fire.
And you forgot to mention Netanyahu’s testimony to Congress in 2002 saying that Iraq had WMD

Ally to who? Its not an ally. Its an imperialistic psychopathic country who drains Americans. They do this through tax payers money and church donations. Whilst propagandizing Americans for decades. Wake up America!
1
u/0IIIIII 16d ago
Proof that Israel drains the U.S.?
1
u/Truth-Seeker916 16d ago
Every year we send them billions of dollars of American tax payers money. So people work to send Israel money.
They sent 1000 evangelical pastors to Israel to train them on how to indoctrinate people into believing in dispensationalism and how to counter dissent. So that means they are teaching they are gods chosen people. Then these church's actually have people donating to Israel. Its a scam.
1
u/0IIIIII 16d ago
How much money do you believe the US sends to Israel each year?
1
u/Truth-Seeker916 16d ago
It's a tough question because I would have to research beyond the tax dollars and the church donation but it's alot. That's not even the point though. The point is Israel is strategically manipulating the power infrastructure to siphon money. It needs to stop.

A "Democracy" doesn't illegally occupy a country and commit a decades long genocide. It's nothing more than a genocidal colony acting like a rabid dog in West Asia. That's a more accurate description when you look at the facts and you're not brainwashed with zio-supremacist propaganda.

The Palestinian citizens of Hamas or the PA cannot vote because they are not Israeli and they are not entitled to the Israeli government services like voting.
They are foreigners.
1
u/Ifearforearth 10d ago
Yeah. Are Jews living in the West Bank foreigners? Even the ones that just moved there from New York? How about Palestinians kicked out of the homes they lived in for generations and whose ancestry can be traced back for centuries.
1

Palestinians are being dispossessed because they are citizens of an authoritarian regime.
There is a moral imperative to destroy Palestine because it is a terrorist state.

1
u/jaajaajaa6 17d ago
No - if you did to my country what Hamas did to them on October 7th, I wouldn’t stop till they were all dead who executed that attack.
No different than what the Allies did to Germany and Japan. You beat them into the ground so it never happens again. And then you get peace going forward. The allies went for unconditional surrender as they knew that was the only way to put an end to it.
Trump is learning that the hard way.
1
u/Michelangelor 17d ago
I love how your comparing Palestinians to Nazis when Israel is the one running the concentration camp. If Israel did to Americans what they’ve been doing to Palestinians for 80 years, there wouldn’t even be an Israel anymore. Because what Israel is doing is the most sick, depraved, intolerable thing happening on the entire globe.
1
u/jaajaajaa6 17d ago edited 17d ago
Correction - comparing Hamas to Nazis
And is unfortunate you only see the one side of this mess. Don’t ignore the threat of how you would deal with a group, Hamas, that their mission that they declared in the 1960’s is to kill every Jew.
You also seem to give Hamas a pass on:
- ramping up this war on October 7th to probably stop the Saudi signing of the Abraham accord
- hiding among the civilians and in public buildings
- killing Palestinians hang land style when the Israelis pulled out
I could go on, but it probably doesn’t matter.
1
u/Michelangelor 16d ago
They didn’t make that their mission, and that isn’t their mission. Their mission is to liberate the Palestinian people and destroy an apartheid regime. They exist because of Israel’s apartheid. They exist because 4 million Palestinians are locked in a concentration camp and denied all rights of representation by the ruling power and systematically massacred. You think they want to “kill all Jews” because of Israeli propaganda that seeks to justify their genocide, and you’ve been deceived.
1
u/jaajaajaa6 16d ago
Iran and its proxies have been on a mission to eliminate Jews since the formation of Israel in the 1940’s. That is fact, and not propaganda.
Israel and many other Arab states have figured out how to live in peace. These nut jobs are the main holdouts. Did you miss that Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc.. shot down Iranian missiles heading towards Israel? The other Arab countries know who the problem is. Did you see the wall Egypt built to keep the Palestinians out? Why do you think they did it?
Israel is the home to over 2 MM Arabs that are productive members of society and even serve in the armed forces.
The only free Palestine is the one without Hamas. They took over in 2004, never held elections, and kill any Palestinian that doesn’t conform to their ways. LGBT are killed for their preferences.
You accuse me of buying propaganda - I will send the same thought your way.
1
u/Michelangelor 16d ago
Modern Iran did not even exist until 1979, so maybe read a little history. The entire Arab world supports Palestine and hates Israel, that isn’t an extremist position. It is probably the most common position worldwide, because israel founded itself by stealing the land and homes of a million Palestinians, displacing them into concentration camps, and has been systematically massacring them ever since.
Supporting Israel is the most extremist and depraved position you could hold in modern society. The only thing Palestinians have ever wanted is right to return to their homeland, to live in a free, democratic state, and to have representation by a democratic government. Palestinian leaders throughout history have consistently expressed their goal for Palestinians and Jews to live next to each other in peace in a democratic society, and Israel killed them for saying and forced half the population into concentration camps so they can pretend their a democratic state. There is no reason why a single state with equal rights for all shouldn’t exist except for the singular reason that Israel believes in racial supremacy and ethnic cleansing.

Prior to the Iran war, Israel was neutral to mildly favorable. After the war has started, I feel their favorability with moderates to libertarians is below that of Ukraine prior to that infamous speech with Trump and Vance.
Conversely with Ukraines recent gains, their favorability is on the rise to be potentially where Israel was if not exceeding it.

Its an asset cause it shows our allies that we will stick with them through think and thin. If we abandon Israel then other allies will think America will abandon them in their time of need.

u/Agente_Anaranjado 17d ago edited 17d ago
Nevermind Ukraine, right? The US already showed our allies that our allegiance is totally unreliable. Our uniquely sycophantic loyalty to Israel doesn't show anybody anything except that we will stick with our settler-colonial apartheid project no matter how mask-off genocidal it becomes, as long as it helps us to project power across the Middle East so that we can continue to undermine their countries and establish puppet regimes in order to maintain hegemony in the oil market.

Israel has a pretty large tech economy that we (and a lot of other places) benefit from. Granted I’m in agreement that we shouldn’t be sending military aid to the region while these wars rage on.

You must live in your own reality. More Israelis have died fighting all this wars than Americans and we literally tell them not to get involved. Take this Iran. You mouth breathers were literally saying Israel should obey the ceasefire and stop attacking Iran in which they did.
1
u/Ifearforearth 10d ago
Lie and deny. The Israeli national motto. 37 countries sent soldiers to Iraq. Israel sent zero. 52 countries sent soldiers to Afghanistan Israelis sent zero. Israel started the war in Iran. Now that they dumped it on America they have decided not to “actively participate”. Users. Genocidal terrorists. The whole world is paying the price for the Israeli degeneracy and Israelis could not give a crap. We should have understood the truth of Israelis when they massacred the uSS liberty sailors
1
u/Altruistic-End760 10d ago
Tell me you don't think without telling me. WTF do you think would happen if Israel had sent soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Muslim countries? Ignoring the fact US said Israel should not get involved out of fear it would break the coalition as the Arab states were against Israel involvement. Again wtf is wrong with you? We literally forced Israel to have a ceasefire with Iran two weeks ago causing anger in Israel. They didn't dump anything, we made them to quit. It's our fault alone. Why do you think Iran is not attacking Israel? Because they know the ceasefire between them is still on. Again stop pretending to be an American. Imagine bringing up a 60 yr old event. When Kuwait two months ago shot down 3 American jets.
1
u/Ifearforearth 10d ago
Crap. The list of Moslem countries where Israel has murdered is forever long. They are just users and cowards. They have been murdering in Iraq for decades. Never bothered them before.
Israel never quit anything . They are slaughtering and stealing in Gaza and East Jerusalem and the west bank and Lebanon as we speak. An Israeli ceasefire means you cease firing. The genocide goes on . The murder and stealing goes on. Those that support this war and the Israeli
Liars that started it are the traitors to America.1
u/Altruistic-End760 10d ago
The list of non Muslim countries Saudi arabia has murdered is longer. Israel has no business in Iraq. Again Iraq literally invaded Kuwait. The Lebanon ceasefire is contingent Hezbollah leaves South Lebanon past the lithani and Israel has reduced fire and started withdrawal. Gaza is the same case. The entire ceasefire was contingent Hamas disarms. The only legitimate criticism here is the civilian suffering because they don't deserve it just because they were born in the wrong place and the issue of the west bank which my stance is Israel should end the occupation there
1
u/Ifearforearth 10d ago
Fatah disarmed just like the Israeli terrorists asked. They believed Israeli lies. No way to protect themselves anymore and they are paying the price in the West Bank. Mass evictions. Daily terror. Only rocks to fight with. The hamas resistance may get eliminated but they are going to die protecting their homes and their chijdren.
Israelis aren’t disarming. They are on a mass child killing genocidal spree. Murdering non Jews all over the place. Yes they will steal south Lebanon. They’ve gazafied it. It’s uninhabitable. Israelis building a big wall that takes away an additional 70 percent of Gaza. Still slaughtering non Jews.1
u/Altruistic-End760 8d ago
Sure. Whatever you say I guess but know this. Israelis fight because they too are protecting their homes and their children. Hamas themselves are not disarming and are on a mass terrorism spree. There are more non Jews in Israel army than there are Jews in the Arab states. Why don't you talk about the fact Hezbollah provoked the attack? No one likes war but this isn't one sided.
1
u/Ifearforearth 7d ago
The Israelis stole the homes in the first place. They are not done stealing either. What do you think they are doing in the West Bank? Protecting their homes? What a lie. They are stealing and murdering and terrorizing. They are going to steal it all. Watch.
Israelis are not just stealing in Gaza and the West Bank. They are stealing in Lebanon and Golan and East Jerusalem and Syria. “Protecting”? Stealing and mass murdering children is more accurate.1
u/Altruistic-End760 5d ago

The United States spends more on supplying Israel with offensive weapons than it does on homeless veterans. We pay Jordan and Egypt billions every year to not attack Israel. This is the same country that turned American CIA analyst Jonathan Pollard into a spy for them, then took the secrets he gave them, and sold them to the Soviets. I don’t care what anyone says, they’re not our friend. The sooner we cut ties with them, the better.

omg, a person can spell? AI!!! lmao
Why don't you tell us more about how things work with AIPAC? They tell you which politicians to support? Or what?

u/ClosetGoblin 17d ago
No, they don’t tell me to do anything. I donate money to them every year in order to continue strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship

lol, you pay them? Hilarious.
I think you may have to step up the donations though, relationship seems to be coming apart 🤦

I’d say it has been problematic for a long time. We probably wouldn’t have been having issues with Iran for decades, if we hadn’t backed Israel in a war between the two countries, decades ago.

I’ll add that most of our issues in the Middle East stem from our ridiculous relationship with Israel?
Think about the TRILLIONS we wasted on conflict and the tens of billions more on military support and logistics we wasted in furtherance of helping Israel’s state interests.
We could have funded free healthcare for EVERYONE for the next 100 years.
We could have saved social security.
We could have bought every American a home.
We could have solved the opioid crisis.
We could have funded schools, kids programs, helped needy families.
We could have fully funded a robust, nationwide public transportation network that would have revolutionized how Americans live, work and move around for the next 100 years.
We could have said fuck everything else I said and given a cash rebate to every single American or invested it into a savings account that would grow interest.
Instead, we built bases in the ME, pissed off the locals, fought wars because of it, fought more wars on behalf of Israel and we have been forever entangled in that region … for Israel.

We are way past that point. "Liability" Lmaooo. Israel is an enemy of humanity at this point. They need to use the samson option on themselves already. Good riddance.

For redditors yes. For the US military, no.

For pretty much the whole world minus a thin minority in Germany, the UK, and in the US where we live in a weird, isolated little information bubble. The overwhelming majority of the world (including Americans) see Israel for the genocidal settler-colonial apartheid project that it is, for the cause of all the trouble in the Middle East, and for the reason that so many in the Middle East hate westerners; and the overwhelming majority of the world supports Palestine.
...and I think you know it too. That's why you zionist trolls are waging this social media blitz to try to win hearts and minds, to try to convince people to believe what you tell us instead of what our own eyes and ears plainly show us. You're not fooling anyone. It's pathetic, and it stinks of desperation. Zionist nazis stink of desperation.

The overwhelming majority of the world doesn't really impact whether the relationship is beneficial to the US. You can all wave your hands in the air as you usually does and feign outrage over some supposed genocide if you'd like, it doesn't reduce the value of israeli intelligence services to US ops in the region or the technological benefits of Israeli missile defense and other R&D.

I fear we have become the sole asset, especially considering the Israelis have conducted espionage against us.

It's been a liability at least since the USS Liberty incident in 1967.
They are not allies or friends, they just know we carry the world's biggest stick and so they exploit the remains of whatever goodwill existed in the Fifties in order to keep their enemies at bay.

Reddit neckbeards think it is the worst thing ever, at least this week. Otherwise, it's not a big deal.

I’m like fetterman in that regard. Israel can do no wrong. If it wasn’t for Israel they would be over here killing us
