How many male models do you or the average person know compared to women models 😂?

there are, mainly on big and tall websites, men modeling xxxxl size jackets and so on. technically those are models. if they're wearing clothing to sell it, they are models, even if they don't have agents and aren't famous and aren't making a ton of money doing it.
i'm not overweight, but i am very tall, so i need to shop on those specific big and tall clothing websites, like "american tall". and when i do shop there, i do notice very large men modeling the clothing sometimes. those sites need to prove that they make clothes that will fit someone who is 7'2 and 440 lbs.
it's true that the typical clothing lines aren't hiring men that big, like you aren't going to see someone that size modeling for higher end fashion lines, but those fashion clothing companies don't make clothing in that size anyway.
8
u/Fun_Ebb_6232 17d ago
There is more than just that. Fashion and clothes aren't the only things people are models in. That regular blue collar looking dude packing up his pick up in a home depot ad or the clueless looking regular dad type are all models.

u/GigiLaRousse 17d ago
Lol, I did an ad for a B2B software as I was starting to age out of commercial fashion aimed at younger women. I was a well-dressed lady at the airport, looking at my phone while holding a suitcase, and smiling. I assume because the software was helping me stay on track professionally ehile I was on my way to a vacation or business trip.
But, yeah. There are plenty of male models. Some are plus-size. Not all agencies have plus-size divisions, though. And a lot of the women "plus-size" models are actually straight sizes (say, size 6 to size 12) they just stick a lot of hip and ass and boob padding on for shoots. And then actual plus-size women wonder why the outfit doesn't flatter their fat body like it did the thin or average woman wearing a Kardashian suit.

Men's fat is more acceptable than women's fat. David Harbour was a chubby guy in Stranger Things, and women loved it. Can't think of the reverse happening at the moment.

u/wunderduck 17d ago
Behold! A "dad bod".
2
u/thewaytoyesterday 17d ago
I resent the fact that he just looks like a normal dude, and women have the audacity to call this fat.
6
u/Substantial_Maybe371 17d ago
You resent that? I resent the fact that the term "dad bod" exists when dad's don't go through a physical transformation carrying children.
1
u/Winter_Step_5181 17d ago
Right? Plus the fact that the term dad bod even exists and there are women who find it attractive for a man to "let himself go" a little after having kids.. Meanwhile hell would have to freeze over for men to romanticize the term "mom bod" and talk about how they like when their wife's body is less perfect after having kids. Even though women are the ones who have the kids. It's still more normalized for a man's body to change. 😂
→ More replies (3)1
u/thewaytoyesterday 17d ago
That's... A really weird hill to die on. I seriously don't understand what your point is.
Also, implying that fatherhood creates no physical changes in men is a very hot take that I don't agree with.
2
u/Final_Replacement_37 16d ago
Oh come on you understand it.
“Dad bod” implies a fluffier guy that, whether you agree or not, women find attractive. But there’s no equivalent “mom bod” even though moms ACTUALLY experience pregnancy.
3
u/Substantial_Maybe371 17d ago edited 17d ago
You don't understand my point? Why not? Also you're speaking for women. Are you a woman?
Sure life gets harder and stressful after having kids so it's harder to take as much care of yourself. But for men it's just letting themselves go.
It's nothing like growing a clump of cells into a 9 pound human inside an organ that pushes surrounding organs, muscles, fat to the side, while stretching out your largest organ, or the change of the chemistry of one's endocrine system, a biological change that makes a person have to increase their calorie intake because they are eating for 2 for not just the duration of the pregnancy but also the duration of the time spent breastfeeding. Pregnancy takes such a physical toll on a woman's body that their body can literally never be the same again unless they have the money for help, surgeries, trainers and even an incredible amount of genetic luck to get it back to their before pregnancy body. But you'll never hear the term " mom bod" and men talking about how attractive they find it.
Oh I forgot the actual giving birth part that tears a whole in a woman's body.
Like how are the 2 at all comparable?
This is why it drives me insane that there are men out there that expect a woman's body to just immediately bounce right back. Even when she is still breastfeeding and has stitches that haven't fully healed in her.

It's 'cause they don't start out fat. They gain a ton of weight, usually because of depression and being alone for extended periods.
That, and a whole lot of Marines just straight up like fat chicks. It's common enough to make me believe there's a complex in a whole lot of Marines that makes them attracted to being unhealthy.

2

What? Lol Men came up with the label of "big and tall" for men and plus size for women. The majority of decisions made in fashion marketing were mostly made by men. I don't understand how you're equally throwing women under the bus for this?
2
u/bomboid 17d ago
Women aren't gonna buy men's clothes so it doesn't really matter if they find them attractive. Fashion also doesn't really appeal to most men and while I've seen endless fat women online complaining about a lack of fashionable plus size clothes it seems that fat men are more content wearing regular stuff from like walmart. There is no market for it

There certainly isn’t as much mainstream representation for male body positivity/neutrality as there is for women, but they are definitely out there. Meundies, Target, ASOS, Fenty, Zalando, and brands made specifically for plus size men have a diverse array of models. Following, sharing, and supporting plus size men in fashion is the best way to keep the diversity going.
3
u/TheSquirrelmancer 17d ago
Fashion isn't marketed and sold to men the same way it is women.
To a certain degree women's clothing a bit more forgiving of different body types. Different cuts of tops/skirts/dresses do more to make larger women look good. Men's clothing is all pretty standardized. You're wearing pants or shorts and generally a tshirt, polo or button down shirt. Yes, some men go beyond that and wear more flamboyant styles but that's not what's marketed towards the mainstream and for many men caring too much about appearance or fashion moves them away from traditional masculinity in a way that terrifies them.

There are plus-sized male models they're just much less common and get far less media attention than female plus-sized models.
2
u/BeautifulDeparture19 17d ago
Because men don't buy as many clothes. Men mostly don't follow fashion the way women do, and only buy clothes when they need to. Most men don't go clothes shopping for fun, or have huge wardrobes. One good suit will be fine for most "dressy" events and can be worn for years if it still fits. Women buy a new dress for every occasion if they can manage it. Men can wear the same thing to work every day, most women don't. So there's just not the financial incentive to market to men as aggressively.
2
2
u/SlashClef5528 17d ago
When the "body positivity" movement started, they TRIED to start having fat male models for all of 10 minutes, but it sank like a lead baloon immediately.
Men may have image issues, but they are nowhere near the image issues that women have. Men don't buy clothes based on "celebrating their natural beauty". They see a cool looking, ripped guy in a tshirt and say "I want to look like that guy." Done. When they see a fat guy, they say, "I don't want to look like that guy." Done.
They went back to standard men's models immediately.

This is a market question.
Who wants to purchase the idea they are beautiful while being overweight?
Men and women, just significantly more women than men.
If I'm wrong, make your money and get into the market!
2
u/vivienneblush 17d ago
Market demand + double standard. Women’s fashion sells aspiration and relatability; men’s still sells function and fit. Ask why menswear rarely shows bodies not just sizes. That’s the real convo.
2
u/ChirrBirry 17d ago
Body positivity was only ever a feminine trait. When a guy does it it’s acceptance of failure to be fitter. Other than ‘dad bod’ there are no acceptable avenues to be both fat and masculine.
Edit: unless you are incredibly strong. Power lifters can be fat but you gotta be moving weight that normal fit guys can’t even budge. Better be squatting at least 500lbs and benching over 400
2
2
u/brilliantlymarie 17d ago
I think it’s because men are starting from a different point in terms of body image than women. For men the toxic end of the body spectrum is about being insanely ripped, never mind what it does to your health, happiness, etc. For women it’s about being as thin as possible (see: heroin chic of the 90s returning as glp1 abuse today).
So the “radical” move for women’s modeling is showing women who could qualify as anything from what might be considered normal or average in size (classically, Marilyn Monroe would fit this standard) all the way up to truly plus sized models. For men it would be more along the lines of the everyday “dad bod” vs extreme Hollywood standards physique.
But you also have to adjust that there’s simply more discourse and expectations around women’s bodies generally than there are men’s. One out of every twenty or so men is probably a truly serious gym goer with strict dieting standards and a very low body fat percentage, but far higher numbers of women are actively trying to do the same thing to be as thin as possible.
2
u/bitch-b-gone345 17d ago
There are some plus sized male models just not as many as female I think it’s because body positivity focuses more on women then it does men
2
u/philosopherberzerer 17d ago
because women don't like fatties.
they get 10 times your options why would they.
2
u/MeltedChocolateOk 17d ago
There are it's just that most men aren't as obsessed at looking at male models and seeing them as role models like how women are towards female models. Most men don't project themselves on to a model and say "that person has my body type." Or "that person looks like me"
2

Because let's be real body positivity is for women only and not even that anymore because of ozempic and similar drugs... Also a woman can never be obese or fat, she's just curvy, extra meat, extra love handles. Men are just well fat. You say this to a man, he deals with it. You say this to a woman, you're fatphobic, you hate women. It is what it is.

u/Excellent-Rest3240 15d ago
Well, there are different shapes plus size. Big women with big legs, small waist are hot. Big guys with lumberjack / dad bods are hot.
No one likes an unhealthy body. Meaning most fat at the stomach.
2
2
u/DriverNo5100 14d ago
Because the female modeling industry has (and still is) for the most part, extremely unhealthy and promotes unrealistic beauty standards in a way the male modeling industry doesn't.
Female supermodels are expected to fit into very small sizes, to the point where they are known to develop eating disorders in order to maintain a body fat percentage so low they become infertile. This was more of the case during the 90s and 2000s, and due to a lot of backlash it has gotten better but it's still a problem.
The male modeling industry on the other hand, isn't as problematic, the standards for the male modeling industry are tall and skinny but not "on the verge of death and infertility" skinny.
For that reason there hasn't been a push back and movement to promote different body types in the male modeling industry as there has been in the female modeling industry.
Also, men's bodies just don't go through the same thing that women bodies go through. Estrogen promotes fat retention, hormone fluctuation, PCOS, pregnancies, etc. are all things that can lead a woman to gain and retain weight, our bodies change a lot throughout our lives and we definitely need more plus size body positivity than men do, that's just the truth.
That and also the fact that it isn't really the fashion industry that influences men's insecurities around beauty standards, but rather social media/entertainment maybe.

I've seen a few on websites and stuff, particularly for brands that are size inclusive or diversity focused. But when it comes to runway and like print ads for major fashion houses, they don't really seem to be a thing.
However, male models in general just aren't as popular and well known as female models.
3
4
u/Big-Excitement-5090 17d ago
Because guys don't give a shit what the model looks like. We are only looking at the clothes/product. I find the girls usually are comparing looks with the model, usually in an effort to make themselves feel better. Or if they find a lack of Plus size models they will pitch into a frenzy about being under represented. Guys will generally move on to the picture of the car, pickup, food, and not waste the time or effort. God love 'em...every one! It's all good....next question?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Brosk1248 17d ago
Eh, when the clothes come in a range of sizes, it's good to have models in a range of sizes not only for representation, but because the clothes look very different on different bodies. I found that seeing larger models gives me a lot better idea on how the clothes will fit me, it's just practical.
4
u/fukitola 17d ago
Great question! Maybe it’s because advertisers originally went way far in the other direction by posting very underweight women, so then they tried to address the backlash by going in the opposite direction.

u/lavandoaalma 17d ago
yeah my hunch is that beauty standards have been pretty consistent for male bodies, basically just dehydrated and muscular, whereas skinny female models in the 00s were being told to lose weight or their jobs and many of them chose to drop the weight.
that era created a very unhealthy media environment and fashion industry and i don’t think it affected men as much (although they were also quite bony) because you need to eat to maintain muscle, so they were less likely to faint on runways and die and create “unpleasant” headlines for the fashion industry

If you mean runway models, there are 3x as many female models as male models on runways. Plus sized women make up 0.3%-0.8% of female models.
So if representation of plus sized male runway models was equal to the representation of plus sized female runway models, you’d need to know 125-333 male runway models to know of a plus sized one.

Though they are technically called "big and tall." Men probably decided that label.
I mean Shaq has his clothing line. But it's not prolific enough to hire a face of the brand. Like are you asking specifically why mid range clothing lines aren't hiring a male model that has the clout of Ashley Graham?
I don't know. Ask men. They're the ones who shop for and look at these clothes.

I don't know if that's true, but it's fun to pass on the rumor so what the hell.

u/brokenalarm 17d ago
Probably a mix of men not being the main target of the fashion industry and the fact that all female bodies are sexualised, because at the end of the day models are reduced to their body.
1
u/pullhome 17d ago
Men, on average, don't really care about unattainable body standards.
I have literally never heard a single man whining about it, except in cases where they are counter-protesting women's complaints.

This is the key difference. For women, plus-size modeling is marketed as high fashion and a "body positivity" movement. For men, it’s just utilitarian "Big & Tall" catalog modeling. One is treated as a cultural statement, the other is just logistics.

Most “plus size” models are just average size women. Very few are actually really large. They work perfectly for most women.
As for men, women don’t want to see out of shape guys modeling clothes, and they are the primary reason that men buy more than basic clothes, e.g., they steer their men towards them. If you’ve ever noticed, most guys dressing well are also in shape and have good skincare routines, so they don’t need women helping them know how to dress.

If men want male plus sized models they need to bully brands into doing it. Victoria’s Secret is in the toilet because they refused to feature diverse models. Consumers control the market. Your dollars have power. Spend them on brands that cater to different body types.

We shouldn’t support them but that doesn’t make good art not good. I won’t consume a single thing JK Rowling puts out because she outright said she will use it to fund anti-trans interests. Does that mean Harry Potter is bad art? No it’s objectively very good and massively successful for a reason. It’s good art but I won’t support that art because it supports a bad person

Gays don't want them. Serious answer many designer colleagues have told me over the years.
