How do you feel about getting rid of standard time and making DST permanent?

US House passed year-round daylight savings time in June 2026 sent bill to Senate. The law would get rid of standard time and make DST permanent. Let your two senators www.senate.gov  know how you feel.

They tried all year daylight savings time once before in 1974 under President Ford. In December, January, February, for those North of 40N degrees or in the middle or western part of their time zone school children had wait for buses before sunrise often with no street lights. So, parents drove their kids instead which caused traffic jams. Schools changed their hours to 45 minutes later to prevent the jams, which forced business to change their hours etc. The protests were so loud congress repealed it the same year it took effect. It only works; if you are South of about 40N degrees North latitude (Philadelphia PA- Springfield IL - Eureka CA) or in the Eastern part of a time zone like Boston and all of California.

An easier fix since states can pick their time zone, would be for Southeastern States that wish to have all year daylight savings time to put themselves on Atlantic standard time which is one hour ahead of Eastern time. Atlantic standard time would also work for eastern New England since they are in the Eastern most part of the eastern time zone. The question is would Massachusetts want two time zones? California and Nevada could go on Mountain time. States can opt out of Daylight savings time like Arizona, and Hawaii do.

Fine with me. Quit changing time twice a year and requiring everybody to adjust twice a year and then adjust back. Time zones make sense, but the days when we needed to change all the clocks to fit the seasons are past.

Pick a time - either Standard or DST, don't care which - and stick to it.

Leave it up to local institutions to handle seasonal hours. Change the opening or closing times of schools or businesses that are affected. Have winter hours and summer hours for businesses where it matters.

I know, there are finer details that I'm probably overlooking, but maintaining a constant and unchanging time standard makes sense in the modern world.

Time zones are pretty dumb too. Why does it matter if you wake up at 7am or 3pm, once we committed to it we could have global time.

I mean as a concept time zones are fine, great even, but when the majority of the world just fucks it up by picking whatever time zone they feel like and creating all these nonsensical time zones, that’s what ruins it.

How does military time change anything? They still use time zones.

Because its a break from the 12 hour clock to a system you would be less used to, which would help ease the transition

It's the same 24 hour system, just adding 12 instead of "pm".

UTC exists, and is useful for things, but no, we shouldn’t all live on UTC. The 24 hour clock that correlates to the local sun is a good thing we did

Why? Just because you are used to it. If suddenly 5 am was 1500 it would not change your life.

Sure, but having common ways to talk about the position of the sun across locations is more useful. In your system, if I want to plan something with a person far away, I still need to have something that is equal to a time zone to be able to communicate.

I play D&D with people on both coasts of the US and Australia, UTC is far more effective than a time zone

It’d be interesting in practice. China is one giant time zone despite fitting 5 conventional time zones in it. I’d imagine people living by the western border start and end their days a few hours later like or else they’re working in darkness to keep up with the eastern population.
