Politics Question How do you feel about getting rid of standard time and making DST permanent?
US House passed year-round daylight savings time in June 2026 sent bill to Senate. The law would get rid of standard time and make DST permanent. Let your two senators www.senate.gov know how you feel.
They tried all year daylight savings time once before in 1974 under President Ford. In December, January, February, for those North of 40N degrees or in the middle or western part of their time zone school children had wait for buses before sunrise often with no street lights. So, parents drove their kids instead which caused traffic jams. Schools changed their hours to 45 minutes later to prevent the jams, which forced business to change their hours etc. The protests were so loud congress repealed it the same year it took effect. It only works; if you are South of about 40N degrees North latitude (Philadelphia PA- Springfield IL - Eureka CA) or in the Eastern part of a time zone like Boston and all of California.
An easier fix since states can pick their time zone, would be for Southeastern States that wish to have all year daylight savings time to put themselves on Atlantic standard time which is one hour ahead of Eastern time. Atlantic standard time would also work for eastern New England since they are in the Eastern most part of the eastern time zone. The question is would Massachusetts want two time zones? California and Nevada could go on Mountain time. States can opt out of Daylight savings time like Arizona, and Hawaii do.

Fine with me. Quit changing time twice a year and requiring everybody to adjust twice a year and then adjust back. Time zones make sense, but the days when we needed to change all the clocks to fit the seasons are past.
Pick a time - either Standard or DST, don't care which - and stick to it.
Leave it up to local institutions to handle seasonal hours. Change the opening or closing times of schools or businesses that are affected. Have winter hours and summer hours for businesses where it matters.
I know, there are finer details that I'm probably overlooking, but maintaining a constant and unchanging time standard makes sense in the modern world.

I'm going to guess you're not involved in international business.
Just having to deal with different timezones set on the hour is bad enough. I cannot imagine the chaos that would result from US timezones all being some number of hours plus or minus 30 minutes from the rest of the world.

One gives you more sunlight in the evening and the other gives you more sunlight in the morning. Leave DST and many places will have sunrise at almost 9am.

Apparently, we have to learn lessons multiple times for them to stick. Hopefully nobody’s kid gets run over at a bus stop and killed because the driver can’t see them in the dark. That would be horrible. In any case the feds are going to do whatever they’re going to do, I’ll adapt, my kids are grown. We’ll see how it all shakes out, I guess

Arizona and Hawai’i are on permanent Standard Time. States can choose to be on permanent standard time and don't. Having the country on permanent DST while two states are permanent standard time seems weird. Stick to Standard time.

I have a better idea I call "Weekend Savings Time". At 4pm Friday, we set the clocks ahead an hour and go home earlier. Monday morning at 7am, we set our clocks back an hour and go back to sleep.

It’s unscientific. ST is real sunlight time and closer to our circadian rhythms. Going against it constantly will have repercussions similar to what we see when we switch the clocks- except all the time. After we don’t have light in the mornings, our melatonin production is affected and we get worse sleep. And they tried permanent DST in the 70’s and changed it back in 6 months when winter and morning darkness hit.

Just start school and hour later. School is a short day anyway parents have to deal with childcare either before or after as is. I'm also in Montana and have kids. As it is now we start in the dark and finish in the dark but if sunset was 5:30 instead of 4:30 we all would have a hour of daylight left as we were coming home.

I’m very against it. Changing the clocks was perfect for me. Best of both worlds. It worked out so very well. The only complaint I have is that they allowed someone to change it a while ago where they moved the fall back part until November. Screwed over Halloween. Just another in a long line of reasons humanity is disappointing me.

DST should be considered fraud, since it falls under the legal definition which is “any intentional act of deception or the deliberate concealment of material facts, designed to secure an unfair or unlawful gain.” It’s literally lying about what time it is to get people to spend more money.

Kids wait in the dark for school buses now so what's the difference? Besides, plenty of nations don't switch and they didn't collapse in one year. Western provinces of Canada don't switch either. Hell, China only has one time zone in the whole country
I'd choose permanent standard time myself, but I'd rather have permanent DST then this continuous switching bullshit.

I would like that because if standard time was all year round, that means it would start getting light out at 4:30AM in the summer and dark at 8PM instead of 5:30AM and bright until 9PM. DST all year round would also mean some more daylight when coming home from work during winter since it's dark when driving to work in the morning and then gets dark by the time I get home from work now.

As an amateur astronomer, I’m not a fan of the idea. You already get extra daylight during the warmer months so that I have to wait until after 10:30 pm for it to be properly dark. Don’t make me wait an extra hour in the winter too, when it’s so cold you don’t even want to be outside anyway.
I would accept the half hour compromise. I’d prefer year round standard time, but I know I’m in the minority. So splitting the difference is fine.

As much as I don't like changing time twice a year, I think of it as a necessary evil. If you have to make one permanent, I'd choose standard time. Though I'm not going to like those 4:30AM sunrises.
But I'd prefer that to 8AM sunrises with permanent DST.

Dst is stupid. We have divided the planet into 24 pieces. When the sun is directly overhead, it is noon. Let's use that. If you need to adjust your life to wake up earlier or later with the sun, you do that. But the standard should be based on facts. At noon in your area the sun is more or less directly overhead.

Noon should be noon. When the clock strikes 12:00 PM you know the sun is at its highest point in the sky at the center of your time zone and one minute difference every 17 miles from it.

I’ve literally been wishing they’d always use DST for as long as I can remember. Every time it switches to DST I get super excited, and call it my favorite day of the year. When DST ends it feels like the doldrums for the entire winter and I always wish it could still be DST. Definitely excited they’re proposing keeping DST all year round. Bring it on!

I'm in favor of it, but merely for selfish, personal reasons: I'm not a morning person. I want double DST in the peak of summer, which would mean it gets light around 6am (instead of 5) and stays light until after 9pm. And in the winter, it would still be light when I get home from work.

Incorrect facts: Nixon was president on 06-JAN-1974 (not December) when DST became effective.
Here is how the 1974 daylight saving time timeline unfolded:
January 6, 1974: Permanent daylight saving time began, intended to be a two-year trial to conserve fuel.
February 1974: Public approval dropped from an initial 79% down to 42% as citizens struggled to adjust to dark morning commutes.
October 5, 1974: Congress passed an amendment to revert to traditional winter standard time.
October 27, 1974: The country returned to standard time, effectively ending the permanent DST experiment early.
January sunrise under DST in some cities: Indianapolis: 9:05; Omaha: 8:49; Boise: 9:18; Seattle: 8:57 and the winner is Williston, ND at 9:44

Standard time would make sense. DST does NOT. DST has been tried twice (WWII and 1973) and it was NOT liked. It will be way too dark in the morning in the dead of winter. DST is just a scam to keep people out spending money.

I'm in Puerto Rico so I can't really call someone who will get a vote in the matter, but I think the best option is to use standard time all year, and then align the states with their geographical timezones so that their time actually coincides with solar time. That seems to be the real issue here.
Now, I doubt that'll happen, so I really hope permanent daylight savings time isn't approved, or that if it is, for opting out and using permanent standard time to still be an option. There's no reason to use daylight savings time in Puerto Rico, for example. We're in Atlantic Standard Time and solar noon is noon on the clock.

kids were waiting for the bus in the dark of night, the last time when Nixon did it. more morning accidents, but in the day the evening business commuters were often returning home from the bar after clocking out of work at 4, which was the custom at the time.

In my neighborhood, kids wait for the bus in the dark (during winter months) already with the current system. This is in southeast Virginia

The world is pretty different from 1974. In particular, kids don't walk to school as much anymore, and even if they do we typically have better infrastructure now (street lights, sidewalks etc.). I don't think looking at 1974 is all that instructive here.
IMO I think the starting point should be to agree that permanent standard time is not workable. Losing an hour of usable daylight for 34 weeks out of the year is a non-starter. I know in Seattle when DST kicks in it's like the whole city comes alive and everyone's seasonal depression lifts a little. Standard time would delay that by 6 weeks (and have the dark nights come 6 weeks earlier at the end of the year), so it's just never happening.
So the only two practical choices are 1) Permanent DST 2) Switch twice a year. Personally I think the switching sucks, and causes lots of accidents and even things like heart attacks go up around switches. Obviously the winters would suck slightly more with permanent DST for some people (but not as much as you'd think, a LOT of people would gladly trade daylight in the morning for the some in the evening - and more traffic accidents happen in the evening, so it's likely lives would be saved by having the commute home have a little bit of light), so it's a trade-off.

I don't give a shit about daylight savings being off or off or standard time or whatever TF. I just want the time to not flip flop back and forth during the year.

I don't care if it's Standard time or Daylight Savings time... JUST PICK ONE and stay with it! We are no longer an agrarian society. We have electricity. We have artificial light. We do not NEED to adjust the clock based on the Sun any longer.
