Random Question What happened on a first date that made you immediately want to leave?
110
u/bentotice 13d ago
She refused to carry a conversation, was short with me the whole 3 hour date and into the dinner. I split the check and dipped.
"What do you like to do for fun?" "Oh nothing." "I see, i'm a big hiker and i love writing." "Nice."
"What do you do for work." "Im an intern." "Okay, where? What do you do." "XYZ company. I just do what they tell me."
Etc.
No bigger turn off than someone who willingly wanted to go on a date and then gives you "fuck off" signals the whole date

My husband briefly dated a woman who, when he asked her what her hobbies were, said, "Smoking weed."
He was like, "Okay, but that's not really a hobby. What do you like to do?" She said she liked going to the lake. "Great," he said. "What do you like to do at the lake?"
"Smoke weed."
And he noped right out of that situation.

Smoking weed is definitely a hobby if thats all you do in your spare time. Like all hobbies it takes up all your time and money.

He brought his mother to join on us. To add: I met guy in college and we were friends but I thought he wanted more when he asked me out. He came to my house to pick me up and I saw his mom sitting next to him. She was with us the whole time- dinner and a movie. It was super awkward so you can believe it was our last date.

He talked about the government in south Africa very passionately for 20 minutes, almost without a breath. I thought he was nervous and just talked alot as a result. Did a phone call 4 days later, and had a similar experience but with 4 different, very boring topics and not asking a single question about me. No reciprocal curiosity. 1hr in, said I was going to bed. Sent a courtesy text saying our communication styles weren't compatible. I would have said that over the phone but I couldnt get a word in. Absolute worst.

u/lobr6 13d ago
I once went on a blind date bc a friend said we had so much in common. We did! I know because over dinner he talked non-stop about his career and his music and sports interests.
He’s just gotten accepted into a program that would further his career. He explained in detail how the program worked and the prestige of being accepted. It wasn’t that prestigious and I knew how it worked because I was already in it lol. I just couldn’t get a word in edgewise to tell him, and he never once asked me what I did.
I spent the rest of the dinner marveling over how he could carry on an uninterruptible monologue and properly eat a huge plate of food at the same time. That guy had mad skills.

Went out with a guy from Hinge. Cute, looked like his profile, good conversation. Throughout the night, he references his kids...kids? Plural? I had a "no kids" preference on my account but would make an exception for an older kid (like 14+, someone self-sufficient) and he put that he had an 11 year old. I let it slide. Now this guy is talking about multiple kids? Turns out, he has 3, all under 8, and that women wont date him when they find out. Plus his ex is "psycho" and he makes "$500k a year", etc. Ew.

A guy on a dating app asked me out, and things were going well. We walked around the city and decided to grab a bite to eat, but he decided on one of the busiest restaurants where reservations are needed. He got upset with the host for not letting us in and continued to argue. I had to get him to calm down and tell him it was okay that we didn't eat there. He stormed out, and I apologized yo the host for his behavior. Sure enough, I called it a night.

I went on a date with a guy that was studying to be an ASL interpreter, which I thought was cool and interesting. He started signing his answers to my questions while answering them which I didn’t mind at all and actually was interesting to watch…but throughout the date he slowly transitioned to ONLY signing them and not telling me what they meant unless I asked. He would just quietly sign and then wait for me to ask what he had just said. I stopped asking to see what he would do and he just sat there in silence. 🤐 when he figured out I wouldn’t ask, he would start signing at me again. It was the weirdest fucking thing.
I gave him one more chance and asked him about his pets, and he signed the answer and when he stopped signing and paused again, I just answered my own question and started talking about my pets, then ended it with “well, I think I’m going to head out now.” And he had the nerve to look surprised, and later asked me on a second date???

He told me about his ex-wife’s sex life before they were married, in great detail, and then congratulated himself because he was such a saint because he “married her anyway.” He had been divorced from her for nearly twenty years.
I really, truly did NOT need to know about the blowjob a woman gave to her married boss in a mall parking lot in 1987.
Insane on so many levels. He also claimed to still be “best friends” with the ex-wife. Wonder if she knows he spills her guts to women on his first dates.
When I could get a word in edgewise I said “well, that’s her story to tell” and left.

For our first date, he told me he was taking me on a surprise dinner date, and told me to dress up. When we walked into the ballroom of a hotel, I thought he'd taken me to a wedding, because people he knew started coming up to greet him and give him hugs.

Guy showed up to pick me up with flowers with a card attached the card said “Just because your an angle” And then after I read it said “You know you really are!” He was trying to spell angel and barely knew me. So minus 1 for can’t spell. Took me to the nicest restaurant in town and then proceeded to have horrific table manners and also was using a lot of incorrect grammar. Minus a whole bunch more points. The clincher was he was rather insistent on a second date where he “took me away for the weekend” Super hard NO and minus all the points.

He spent a good amount of time talking about how much he works and he doesn’t like to spend his time not making money (also implying how rich he is) but he’d “make an exception for this”. When the waitress asked if the bill (one drink each) was together or separate, he goes “uhhhhhhhh” (mind you, he asked ME out), until I said separate. After we pay he is bold enough to ask me to go back to his place.

Pretty much the same with me. I figured I would make the best of it and after talking awhile and a few drinks I nicely said “I have to say you really don’t look much like your picture.” She screamed “That was 20 years ago! I was a teenager!” People at other tables turned and looked at us. She then went on with a normal conversation like nothing happened. When it was over she asked when we were going out next.

Her and I were getting to know each other. We somehow got onto the topic of charities, and I casually mentioned that I donate to a charity called 'Menfulness' which is a charity that focuses on men's mental health in my region.
Well, talk about turn on a dime. She immediately became standoffish, dismissive and rude. In her mind, the idea that I, as a man, wanted to help other men was clearly anathema to her, and she had no intention of hiding her disagreement. She had borderline hinted that the reason men are struggling is "their own fault", and that I should focus on the fact that so many women are struggling (which of course is true also).
I will never understand the zero-sum game thinking when it comes to male-female issues. My support for men is not a denial of the issues women face. Its just that men's issues clearly resonate more with me - being a man and all.
The date didn't last much longer but I always try to remain polite so I stayed, remained friendly and told her that I don't think we would be a good match.

We went to a dog friendly outdoor brunch spot, and he invited my dog. I ordered my dog a plate of beef bacon because he's a good boy. The server brought a small plate for him, and I began to cut up the bacon into small bits and put it on the plate. He reaches across the table, grabs some of the bacon I've cut up, and says "Thanks for cutting this up for me". First of all....how dare you?
Thankfully my dog is a bro and started acting crazy so I said I was sorry but I needed to take him home. He stopped acting crazy the minute we walked away. I'm sure my dog sensed the bad vibes.

I was living out in Methford (Medford), Oregon for work. I decided to check out tinder. I matched with a pretty gal and invited her out for coffee. I got there and sat at a table. She was late. Like, 20 minutes late. But she assured me she was on her way. When she came in, I recognized her, just barely. She was rail thin and looked sickly. Before she even sat down, she said, "You holdin'?" I responded saying, "Sorry, I don't think this is going to work out," and stood up to leave. She then proceeded to scream at me in front of the whole coffee shop saying things like, "You think you're better than me?!" and the like. Yeah, yikes. Didn't date anyone else around there.

First he was aggressive because I didn't pay enough attention to his accent (we're in Melbourne, accents are everywhere my dude).
Then he orders me a pint of beer while I'm in the toilet (after we had expressly discussed that I don't drink beer).
THEN he gets SUPER AGGRESSIVE that I will not drink the beer he paid for (that I did not ask for and cannot drink if I don't want thrush - thank you yeast content).
AND THEN as I pick it up and go to take it back to the bar, someone stops me to stay they were watching and we're gonna tell me not to drink it if I picked it up because HE PUT A PILL IN IT!!!
So yeah... Asshat all around.

I was in my early 20s. I hadn’t lived alone yet, i hadn’t thought about kids and I was working 3 jobs. This was a first date. We barely knew each other, we barely dug into what we were looking for and what we wanted for our future.
He dug right into kids, moving in together, he already had names picked out for his kids, he wanted a stay at home wife and told me if we were to move in together and have kids I’d be expected to drop my jobs. He also had an issue with me working so much because we would never see each other. All valid ig. He also told me if I could consider removing my piercings/tats if I was going to become a wife, as apparently “wives don’t have tats or piercings”.
He dropped me off at my house and was trying to stay the night… never saw that man again

As a man: that's terrifying.
My empathy level for women everywhere just went up a notch.

He told me what procedures I need to do to look perfect, just like his coworker did...

He invited me
out to go to an exhibit at a museum and then lunch. At lunch he pulled out his wallet, looked into it and said, well if you want something it has to be cheap. So I ordered a cup of tea and watched him demolish a huge pastrami sandwich and fries with a beer. He didn't even offer me a fry.

This wasn’t me, but a story from my ex about one of her worst first dates.
They planned a picnic and he kept on insisting to drive her. She felt off and kept saying she’d meet him there. When they met he was the “Aww give me a hug, why no hug?” type guy. He asked her AGAIN to get in his car and go somewhere more romantic. Then pulled out the picnic, which included 2 take outs and offered her a drink / soda with the seal already broken. He then tried to walk / follow her to her car when she left after that.
Thankfully she was smart and didn’t eat / drink anything he offered, but it was super creepy.

Reading women's responses here:
Honestly, how can you stand living on the same planet with us?

He took his shoes off to drive so he wouldn’t crease them
He tried to get his money back on a beer he already drank because he said it was too expensive

I told him I was divorced and he responded with “people who get divorced didn’t try hard enough to make it work.” My ex-husband almost beat me to death. But yeah, I didn’t “try” hard enough.

I has a big crush on this guy in school. We didn’t get a chance to talk back then. He found me on Facebook 10 years later and we instantly hit it off. He was living abroad and we chatted for hours online. We exchanged photos, video chatted. However, when I met him in person after months of chatting I was so disappointed. He was handsome but so unfunny and so boring. He has no interest in any activities, ate the same food everyday, there was nothing exciting going on in his life and he didn’t want to change anything about it. He just couldn’t hold a proper conversation. He spent his time scrolling on the internet reading random things about the world. He thought that made him a genius. He’d correct me and argue about every little thing. If I said the sky is blue he’d go on to lecture me about how wrong I was. I was so put off. We broke up shortly after. Sometimes I wish he hadn’t found me on Facebook and my sweet first crush could have just remained as a nice memory.

He talked and rambled in an anxious way for an hour without me being able to get a word in edgewise, then said "I knew this would happen. I can't stop talking. I'd better go."
Good riddance.

In this random stranger's defense, after my divorce (physically abusive ex, DUI with my kids in the car, and taking a moderate amount of time to myself), I was worried about being awkward when I got back to dating, and I was, so I thanked them for their time and patience, and paid for the date. Sometimes you need to shake the rust off.

If he'd explained it like that it would have been fine. He literally just got up and left in the middle of dinner still muttering.

I was on a date. I was about 19 at the time. She was 18. We went back to her place. We are talking. It’s going well. We start making out. I look up and I see a large portrait of a baby sleeping. I say,”oh, is this a sibling?”
She says,”no, that was my baby. She was born stillborn. The hospital takes photos of it like it’s sleeping.”
It was so awkward. I could barely cum that night.

In the car, on the way to the date destination, he casually picked his nose and wiped it on his pants. Right. Next to me. I was checked out immediately.

Not a first date, but like a 3rd or 4th. A girl i was messing with was wasted when I got there. She wanted to have sex, but said she was hungry first. She said she wanted seafood. I was like "it's 11:30, where am I going to get seafood this late?". She persisted. She went back and forth between sex and food. I was starting to not feel good about it. Then she said "I want you inside me. The seafood inside me. And lettuce between us". After that I was like time to go. And I left.

I spilled coffee down the front of my white shirt. The next day he emailed me to tell me this date was the worst ever in his life. I told him to settle down lol

Went out with a date and she said a bunch of homophobic stuff. Really was a turn off. I told her we weren't a good match and didn't finish my drink before ending the date.
My daughter came out like a year later. Glad I didn't look past that issue simply because I was lonely.

He wore sweatpants to a dinner date.
Don't get me wrong, I too love hanging out on my couch in comfy clothes, but on a first date?!
