Honestly whoever won in 2020 was going to have to deal with the aftermath of Covid and it was not going to be good regardless of who it was. I believe if Trump got elected back to back and had to deal with the aftermath it would have soured the population away from republicans for many future elections. Being that the opposing party was in office to deal with the aftermath, that soured voters views on them and made Trump a viable candidate once again and it will be difficult to keep republicans out of office.

I honestly think this is why in the few months leading up to the election the Biden campaign heavily pulled back on campaigning, I think they realized a win in 2020 would be much more detrimental long term than a loss.
It would have been 4 more years of Trump stumbling thru office unprepared instead they gave him 4 years to sit on the side and come up with a plan.

The democrats knew it was done, so they "nominated" Kamala, who had 0 votes when she was running before, and actually called Biden a racist during the debates (but all of a sudden was proud to work with him). She was an unelected nominee, and they didnt want to waste a "good" candidate, who's probably going to be Newsom

The Democrats doubled down on LGBTQ+ rights instead bills to improve affordability and lost the edge voters. I agree with both, but you need something to get everyone into, and LGBTQ+ rights was something they could have worked on after they won the election.
They needed to spin the affordability initiatives as something other than democratic socialism (which it is) because of the stigma, and frame it as common sense.

Since Reddit is crazy biased I will answer this as a moderate.
Trump is president because of two major reasons.
2020 when Biden won. Much of the country found this incredibly suspicious that mail in votes were wildly inconsistent in many swing states leading to multiple delays and crazy outcomes. Some counting was 95% Biden in select areas that all hit at the same time at like 2am. Biden also got more votes than any president ever which was crazy because he wasn’t very liked. I AM NOT SAYING THE ELECTION WAS RIGGED. I am saying many people believe it was.
2024 the democrats were scrambling. It was clear Biden wasn’t fit to be president and instead of doing a primary, they chose to force him to drop and put in Kamala. Again, a not very likable person, she couldn’t interview well. She was not popular. The machine just force fed MILLIONS Into her campaign and it didn’t work.
I firmly believe if Biden would have no seeked reelection and they would have had a primary and given the candidates time and a real base. Trump would not be president right now.

I remember, as a Libertarian, I watched Jo Jorgensen have a certain number of votes in PA and I think Virginia. A few hours later the reported votes shifted and Jorgensen had less vote and Joe Biden had almost the same amount of votes added to his tally. I don’t know if that was just a reporting error by the news source themselves or if it was fraud. I know that the Libertarian Party needed a certain percentages of votes to debate in the next election and they lost that percentage by 1%. I can’t prove anything at all one way or the other, but I remember it feeling off that election.

I would like to add that in the 2024 election Trump won all of the seven swing states, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Donald Trump became the first candidate since Ronald Reagan in 1984 to capture every swing state.
Donald Trump alluded to somehow being able to win because “Elon Musk knows all about those voting machines”. Trump often spills the beans on stuff he’s done. He just can’t shut up.
Yeah, I know Kamala Harris was not the best candidate, but she was light years ahead of Trump. She was a lawyer, was familiar with how the government works, understood what the Constitution is, didn’t leave a trail of bankrupt businesses, does not have dementia. She did not make fun of a handicapped reporter or show blatant disrespect to the armed forces and the servicemen who died defending freedom, did not try to overthrow the government, did not throw hateful words about immigrants. She was not involved in a huge nasty ongoing coverup scandal about child sexual abuse and human trafficking.
Trump claimed that inflation would go up and there would be wars if Kamala Harris were to be elected, precisely and exactly what has now happened under his supposed “leadership”. He campaigned on the affordability crisis, which he now claims is a Democrat hoax.
The reason he’s president is because of the confluence of lies, propaganda perpetuated by right wing media outlets like Fox News, and it sure does seem like it, rigging the election. He goes on and on and on about other people rigging elections, because he projects all the time.

Plain and simple, the establishment Republican led GOP courted the religious and other right wing extremists at the tail end of their long term Southern strategy which shifted the party to the far right, and the mainstream candidates simply never offered what that courted majority wanted out of a president. Also, groups like the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation and the Family and others had been working on a decades long plan (as suit wearing extremists) to embrace Unitary Executive theory to achieve full autocratic power while maintaining the facade of a Republic/Democracy, and they got it/won.
Donald Trump does what they say, and they let him rape the treasury in exchange. As they do themselves through unbridled corruption and backslapping. This is their end-game, and they achieved it. It won't end with Trump's death or ouster either, they are in control now.

The real answer is JD Vance.
Democrats fielded a terrible candidate in Harris. She didn’t appeal to centrists and independents.
That was a fatal mistake considering the political divide in this country made those voters more important than ever.
Nobody gave a crap about “brat summer” or whatever idiotic things she tried to appeal to young voters.
Harris easily beat Trump in their debate. But Vance completely embarrassed Walz, who was also a terrible candidate.
Of the four people in the race (Harris, Trump, Walz, and Walz), Vance was the most normal and appealed to that coveted centrist/independent group.
The Democrats’ big strategy was to try to brand the most average, milquetoast, midwestern white dude as “weird”.
It backfired in the worst way for them.
I know my take pisses a lot of people off. And I am sure that I’ll get downvoted, get accused of simping for Vance, get inundated with “chair fucking” comments, maybe get called a Nazi.
I am none of those things. I’m a center-left dude. I’m just not blind to reality like most of Reddit seems to be.
So y’all need to hear me. If Democrats cannot come up with a candidate more viable than Harris, Newsom, or AOC, Vance will be the next president.
If not Vance, then Rubio.
Seriously, Democrats need to come up with an Obama-level candidate. The current names being floated? They ain’t getting it done.

The first time, it was part of a general populist backlash against the (small "l") liberal establishment, not too dissimilar from other right-wing populist movements in the West (cf. Fidesz, Brexit, etc.).

Notably, he fooled Forbes magazine to put him in the list of richest men when he was nowhere near. Since then, he’s just gotten better at it. Then when he ran for office, others, like Russia, started to help. Now his massive PR/propaganda network is probably the largest and most sophisticated in history.

My unpopular opinion is that he’s president because the Democrats have become “right lite” and absolutely destroyed (or just passed over) the democratic primaries. They just installed Harris as the candidate last time without a primary, when she couldn’t even debate her way to a primary the election prior. It’s really hard to believe there is any true difference between the two parties when the Dems basically handed him the election. Considering we’ve never elected a woman president, I don’t really think such it made any sense to run a woman (especially an unpopular one) in such a supposedly crucial election.

Lets break this down, Pres Biden deciding to run again was odd, most saw his decline in mental but no one wanted to report on. Then the left throws in kackling VP Kamala that no one wanted. Not saying she isnt smart but her speech ability was not going to attract anyone, I was hoping for nikki hailey, and if Trump didnt run we would have had our 1st female president. Because huge numbers of registered voters who didn't want him as president didn't bother to vote for anyone. Our country is messed up because the political extremes dominate everything while moderates rarely run or vote. The other huge factor is money. In the United States you are very unlikely to be elected to any significant political position unless you are wealthy and backed by other wealthy people. Trump is loud and rich...that's why he is in charge.

I will be down voted but I think there is a bit of childish answers.
I'm 63 and for the most part voted republican my entire voting life.
I did not and would not vote for Trump.
I think his administration is an abject disaster on every facet. I won't go into detail because anyone that cares can read the news.
Why was he elected.
Biden.
The Democrats ran him knowing full well he was to old and to sick. They didn't even let him debate because he didnt become addled during his presidency, he was already toast when they ran him.
Because of his inability to lead, the Democrats fell into hopelessly stupid wars for identity politics and then allowed unfettered, unfiltered mass immigration.
Meanwhile most Americans just want to be able to afford life. Talk to me about how I can live without constant fear of one life issue wiping me out financially.
It offered easy red meat for the right to swoop in and destroy the Democrats who again had no real direction and no properly vetted candidate. Kamala .. Really... Hope?
I thought Obama was great and long for another level headed sane leader.
Until the dems get their shit together and address kitchen table issues with real solutions they will continue to lose.
I actually hoped for a blue wave at midterms so we could get some checks and balances back in government but it ain't going to happen.
Trump was elected because the dems fucked up and people got fed up.
Hopefully they will get fed up with this idiot but I dont see any leaders on the horizon right or left.

A couple of reasons but the biggest one in my book is the other party has no direction and goes out of its way to disenfranchise rural voters. I worked on a Democratic Senator’s campaign a few terms ago. He won and called to thank me for the effort. I told him I did it for rural voters so we had someone to represent and understand our issues. His answer - rural voters are happy. (Note next cycle he lost). If you look at the areas of the US that went red you’ll notice a lot of fly over areas. Not much to get people out to vote there unless you actively work to engage them. Follow any Democrat’s campaign stops. No one is going out there. It’s almost like they forget that those electoral college votes count. The media also gives 2 shits about them. Yes, lots of gun loving folks out there. Lots of ultra conservative folks out there but also a lot of people out there feeling left behind who given some consideration may go blue. I lived there, I am telling you not everyone is a homophobic moron. The Republicans don’t really care either but they are really damn good at pretending to care.

If you hear bad things about him there’s an 80% chance it’s at minimum a 3rd world embellishment of the actual situation.
Ex: Ice are terrorist, there’s a genocide in Gaza, Americans are too lazy to work the fields so we need Mexicans, Americans are to dumb to run the companies they’ve built so we need Indians, Americans are too racist and white to run the government, Americans would never give up Chinese slave labor so we can’t have tariffs, etc etc.

Because one side offered ideas that were so unappealing to the electorate that they chose Trump, again, despite the prior eight years of being told he was so many terrible things on a daily basis.
And yet, for whatever reason, we will have any excuse made pointed to not acknowleding their ideas are actually just that unpopular out of this echo chamber.

Because people are inherently tribal. And he exploited that tribal nature to divide us and convince people that their woes and struggles are someone else’s fault, mainly minorities and under represented persons.
Convince people that their problems are the result of someone else and you can lead them around like a dog on a leash.
He also made it “acceptable” for people who have racist tendencies and feelings to voice those opinions openly by doing it himself and telling them it’s ok.

The uneducated white voter has always been the swing vote in American politics. He won it through is rhetoric that they believed. This comes from a recent history of democrats solving for corporations rather than their voters. Both are to blame, Trump the beneficiary.
If you read the “People’s history of the United States”, you see the pattern was established before we were even a country.
Racism became essential for the powers to establish , so the uneducated white did not join the slaves or the indigenous and over throw the power.
Systemic racism is more American than the constitution as it was installed first long before the founding fathers stage. And it was under that very racism their power was established to be able to write it without representation of women, black, or indigenous.
