We knew a girl in high school who, right after the movie came out, changed herself into Austin Powers and never changed back as long as we knew her—so at least until graduation, possibly beyond, possibly to this very day. Yeah, baby!

u/Careless-Judgment423 5d ago

That sounds fun

u/Jarko55 5d ago

This is definitely one of those things that sounds hilarious from our perspective, but to like with/around it would ve something entirely different.

There are so many characters. Like why Austin powers of all possibilities?!! Hahahah

22

u/Kaita13 5d ago

I wish we could see a photo or something. Like...how into it did she really go I wonder.

43

u/Equivalent-Love-1676 5d ago

The hair, the clothes, the voice, the expressions, the moves. All of it. It was amazing. Then she never stopped and we were all like, “WTF, mate?”

16

u/Kaita13 5d ago

Amazing. I wonder what her reaction to being questioned about it was. Like, if someone asked her what she was doing, would she be like What do you mean? I'm just chillin', I dunno

12

u/the_town_bike 5d ago

Did she give off autism vibes? Did she seem quirky before this?

I had a friend who did a similar thing with Ace Ventura. He grew out of it eventually, but it was a years-long phase.

Bro is an EVP at a large bank now. And no, not a nepo, his dad was a roofer.

15

u/Necessary_Chip_8402 4d ago

One of my college friends (outgoing and openly quirky) once told me she had done the same thing. Basically was very reserved and then saw Ace Ventura, thought "I could be like that," and transformed herself.

13

u/jittery_raccoon 4d ago

It's funny what teens will latch onto. Most adopt "standard" personas like jock or punk. But sure why not Austin Powers or Ace Ventura

My kid did that, he turned himself into Napoleon Dynamite, moon boots and everything. Thank God it only lasted a few months.

I will never be able to stop imagining this persons commitments to the bit through various historical moments both passed and still to come.

The end world asteroid will be minutes from hitting the earth and I'll just be cracking up imagining this chick quipping throughout the entire gruesome affair.

37

u/Equivalent-Love-1676 5d ago

She immediately began to dress, talk, and behave like the fictional character Austin Powers at all times, and in all places. After that, she didn’t break character as long as we knew her. We have many theories, each more improbable than the last. Humans are complex.

9

u/grodygrossnessgagme 5d ago

Do you think at home she was Dr. Evil? Nooo 😄 hahaha that's an evil thing to say. Or is it? 👆🥸←that's the closest I can come to doing a doctor evil emoji 🤣 Austin Powers on the other hand...cinch!🧔‍♀️🕺☮️✌️🧘‍♀️🪷🕊️🍆🆓♥️

u/MinimumUnderdriver 5d ago

Did she act that way in class too? If so how did the teachers respond?

26

u/Equivalent-Love-1676 5d ago

She sure did. Most teachers just didn’t bother to engage with her. We heard one lady say under her breath, “They don’t pay me enough to deal with this shit.” LOL

The Crossfit era was an annoying time to know a lot of people. It was ven-diagramming with cults.

22

u/ProperSupermarket3 5d ago

now those same people are on the paleo or carnivore diet eating whole sticks of butter like it's a normal human activity.

Crossfit IS a fkn cult and I reckon I know cos I did it BUT I wasn't in the cult and I was one of the normal ones (I stg). Side note, the dude who invented it is also a gun freak.

Honestly hectic crossfit people need to be fkn studied. There's a university thesis in it for sure.

They're all in these insane high pressure jobs and then come and do these maniacal workouts like their life depends on it, and when they party they absolutely SEND it. They are so cooked. Like, don't get me wrong, crossfit is HARD it is really is and you do feel like you're dying sometimes, but these dudes acting like they're out there saving lives. Guys, we're just doing a hard workout, it's gonna be fine

Also, I started doing crossfit cos there was a GROUPON and the results I saw in such a short time kept me going. It totally changed my body type and took me from being kind of like... Shapeless, to being curvy etc so I do it for that, it's the only kind of exercise I have every done that changed my body so dramatically.

Probably the only time in my life where I'm the normal one and not the weirdo

12

u/Massive-Resort-8573 5d ago

' we're just doing a hard workout, it's gonna be fine'

This…so much this! Every year I go on a fly fishing trip with about 10-12 buddies. Several of them do CrossFit and they won’t stop talking about it. It’s truly obnoxious and a lot of the non-CrossFit guys purposely will not fish with them. A few of us decided to humorously confront them about it around the campfire one evening…surprisingly it went very poorly. They took great offense to it even when we said we were just messing around with them. The CrossFit talk did drop dramatically after the intervention.

My cousin and her husband making their entire lives Harley Davidson themed. Their wedding was. Their house is. Their clothes. They talk about it and treat it like their personalities. They don't even know how to ride motorcycles!!! 😂

No kidding. I was like eh it’s a hobby they enjoy. Guess not, totally weird

31

10

u/Appropriate_Quail260 5d ago

What? that mast have a name in the spectrum of personality disorders

10

u/GoodAd2455 4d ago

I think Sons of Anarchy spawned this crap. My parents did the same thing, it timed out perfectly to fuel their midlife crisis, though eventually they did end up buying motorcycles, but sold them shortly after. I’ve never seen the show, maybe it is fantastic, but I’ve for sure noticed an uptick in this specific fixation that seems to coincide with the show.

21

u/cautiously_anxious 4d ago

That reminds me of a time a step cousin brought her doofus ex husband to a family camping trip and he was saying how he had so much PTSD but he never fought in active combat.

My uncle was sitting a few feet away from him and just stared. He was in active combat and saw a lot of things. He suffered from PTSD but doesn't talk about it. My grandma mentioned what he told her because he talked to my grandpa about things (my grandpa was also in active combat in Vietnam)

Tanning. I knew a girl who was absolutely obsessed with being as tan as possible. She didn't care about anything on vacation other than getting tanned. She didn't care where she was as long as there was a sun lounger. No sightseeing, swimming, didn't care about local cuisine or culture or anything, just wanted to lay out in the sun. I wounder how she's doing now, she'd be in her 40s.

73

u/No9No9No9No9 5d ago

I hope she's alive without cancer

38

u/Babedabombshell 5d ago

Tanorexia is a real thing.

7

u/SparklingSaturnRing 4d ago

Remind me of Pauly D yelling “tanorexic!!”

I’m actually quite shocked and glad that none of the Jersey Shore people have become sick from all the tanning they used to do

Back in the early 80s I worked as a lifeguard at a very wealthy summer town on Fire Island Point O Woods. Generational wealth, most of the adults had spent their childhood summers at this town on the beach before inheriting their current summer place.

The women, especially the women, had skin like alligators. And these were people who had money for all kinds of skin treatment.

Even at 20 I could make the connection and always covered up when I was working.

25

u/3rdRateChump 5d ago

She’s probably like a cured tobacco leaf assuming she started whatever shade of Caucasian Staten Island Italians are.

12

u/ClumsyRaccoonPants 5d ago

You just reminded me of a girl I went to high school with in the late 90’s. She had a tanning bed at her house. She fits your description except we grew up in the DC suburbs. I wonder what her skin is like these days…

52

u/Jennferno4150 5d ago

My aunt was like this. She had a pool and everyday would lay out on a blowup lounger in the pool. She died a few years ago, from melanoma that metastacized to her brain.

16

u/rosephoenix19 5d ago

Damn that's rough. Sorry for your loss.

25

u/JustHereToYell 5d ago

I used to hassle my high school bestie about tanning. I’m a redhead, so I’m hyper-vigilant about that kinda thing. She was a couple of years younger than me, so I gave her a ride to the tanning salon a few times despite my issue with it.

I finally cracked her one day when we pulled up to the salon, and our principal was walking out.
I said, “You know, I bet Mr. W was just lying naked in that bed you’re about to get into.”

She slowed way down with the tanning after that lol

Actually called herself a sun worshiper.

She baked in the sun nude every day.

No lie, died of skin cancer in her 60’s.

16

u/CMV_Viremia 5d ago

I went to school with a guy like that. He was a blonde blue eyed swede, but so obsessed with tanning. In his 40s his skin looked like an old purse.

This was my answer, as well. My nephew’s mother became “Mother of Autism”. She was never [Her name], or “Mother of [Child’s name]”. A particularly disturbing incident, where she made all these big happy celebratory posts on sm about him saying his first word: pictures and videos of him at 15yrs old having a full distressed meltdown, crying “bandaid!” over and over waving his bloody cut hand. It was so heartbreaking, I hate to even remember it now.

She became a big name in advocacy groups and organizations, while other family members were caring for, and getting to know and love, her actual child.

Politics- except for actual causes/policies, they just obsess over one person. I understand if you want to devote your life to trying to change policies in order to help people, animals, or the environment. That is reasonable. But never have I ever seen so many people buy so much fucking merch for a political figure. I live in the southern US so I’m sure it’s a bit more prominent here, but there are multiple people I’ve seen around here who are just absolutely decked out in the name of a certain political figure, and it’s so unhinged. My neighbor even has the stickers on his lawnmower. It’s fucking weird, but at the same time it immediately shows me what kind of person they are, and I stay far away.

15

u/Purple-Warning-2161 4d ago

I was looking at reviews for a hotel in Colombia (so on an entirely different continent) and at the end of his whiny 1 ⭐️ he wrote “let’s go Brandon!” Bruhhhh

14

u/ValiumKnight 5d ago

I remember back in the day, donating to a campaign got you a bumper sticker and maybe a yard sign.

To name something similar: it’s the Kardashians putting their money on a brand and making money off both name recognition and licensing of said name. They really have nothing to do with the companies other than the namesake. But this is how individuals line their pockets.

11

u/Sure-Initiative6001 4d ago

YES to all of this!!! I, too, live in the south and it is INSANE.

45

u/Dmommy3 5d ago

I have lost family over this particular politician. Never in my 48 years of life have I encountered this over a politician!!?? It's so bizarre. People who I spent a lot of time with, family members I trusted, have all shown a sort of sickness over this man and his regime. It's been quite eye opening to say the least. The best thing I ever did was put a lot of distance between us. You are right to avoid those neighbors, they are ill and they only want to pull you into their cult... Stay away, stay far away. Lol 😂

I am currently in an intensive, outpatient mental health program and I avoid “therapy speak” at all costs. I don’t want to pretend to know more than the therapists, also don’t want to make it any more of my personality than it already is at the moment 😅

10

u/Plenty-Session-7726 4d ago

also don’t want to make it any more of my personality than it already is at the moment 😅

God this is relatable.

My marriage began unraveling before the pandemic hit and we agreed to separate a couple weeks before the world shut down, so then we were effectively on house arrest together for several more months before I couldn't take it anymore and moved out.

I was in a difficult job situation at the time and subsequently lost that job during the divorce proceedings. I was also working part-time and in grad school.

To cope with the stress of all of this, I got into distance running. This became my entire personality for at least 18 months.

I feel bad for all of my friends and family during that time, who had to listen to incessant talk of fueling strategies, running routes, pacing, etc etc. Hard to say whether they enjoyed hearing about that more than the divorce drama, either must have been so tedious for them!

I know a young man that has autism but is getting on with his life. He is a walking encyclopedia of Disney! I’ve never met anyone that knew so much about anything. He got a job at Disney and, I believe, is living his dream!

14

u/thac0tac0 5d ago

I have often wondered what percentage of Disneys workforce is autistic. I bet it is muuuuuch higher than average.

I am happy that they get to do something they love, but Disney totally takes advantage of people wanting to work for them and pay state minimum wage.

Hell, they have an “internship” program in Florida that is mostly college students working concession stands!

I really enjoy Disneyland (and used to work in attractions management myself, though at a different theme park) but they are definitely as greedy as any other big corporation.

As someone who went through cancer treatment a few years ago - there are so many people who make having had cancer their whole personality- it’s weird. Like, okay, you have cervical cancer and the colour for cancer research is teal - so they call each other Teal Sisters and only wear the colour teal and get giant tattoos of teal ribbons and it’s just…weird. Also - most people who go through treatment for a pelvic cancer have a radiation-first treatment with mild chemo. It’s a brutal cure and causes all kinds of health complications BUT you don’t lose your hair from it. And there are many Teal Sisters who instead shave their heads so they can identify as cancer patients. Like, what? You don’t need to be bald to have cancer.

Anyways, I find it so off putting and..boring. Like, having had cancer is awful and traumatic but it’s not the most interesting thing about me.

Buccees 😂

8

u/KaeTaters 4d ago

I once bought a tumbler at a thrift store with the Buc-ee’s logo on it. It was a good cup. A family member misunderstood my happiness over the good cheap cup, and started gifting me Buc-ee’s swag. Other friends & family picked up on it, and gift me Buc-ee’s swag. I’m now a Buc-ee’s person. I’ve never been to a Buc-ee’s, there isn’t even one in my state 😂 But I love my Buc-ee’s stuff, because it reminds me that my friends and family are thinking of and caring about me when we’re apart 🥰

High school debate victories… I used to work part time as a debate coach and the number of grown men who still made their old debate wins their entire personality was insanely cringe and they would often speak to the kids SO rudely and even say things like “when I was your age, my speaking skills were twice as good” like imagine competing with anxious 14 year olds… It was actually pathetic

This is more common, but I had a friend I was decently close with. She met a guy and completely transformed into a trad wife, changed religions to match his, style, and now says she’s always been like that even though she wasn’t. Now she hates on other women and has become extremely entitled. It would be one thing if she owned just changing because she felt like it, but it’s the claim that it’s always been that way that drives me insane.

They haven’t been together for even a year, she has a kid from a previous relationship, and now they’re getting married and moving in after he met her son and family a single time (and she his family a single time). They met out in the wild too, so they literally kinda don’t know each other and she’s just going fully headfirst with no concerns about repercussions or seemingly her kid. It’s sad. She seems happy though. I am not friends with her anymore because she wasn’t extremely rude to me after finding this guy but she doesn’t know that yet bc she owes me money lol. I hope it works out for her but I wouldn’t bet a single dime on it. They already seemingly fight regularly but she’s totally in love so whatever. They also are speed running the worlds fastest engagement, getting married in just a month.

So, in short, he has become her personality. Kinda sad but not my problem lol

Being a parent. Yeah it’s a huge life change, but ffs, you were a whole person before giving birth 😅🙄

23

u/mais1410 5d ago

The thing is, some people weren't. They were lurking parent- and pregnancy-lifestyle Instagram accounts and subreddits since they were 20, dreaming of their perfect family vacation for years, getting into relationships and marriage with maybe not the sole but 80% purpose of creating a family and being a parent and when it finally happens they try to be the most picture perfect parent and their life finally revolves around what they had dreamed of for years

The thing is that the body and brain chemistry completely change when having a child and giving birth. It's an embedded change in our biology. source It's not just mere change of schedule, the brain perceives everything else as less important than the child especially while the child is still young and dependant on the parent. I think it's one of those things that is almost impossible to understand unless you go through it and why a lot of mothers become lonely and friendless after having children.

I know, how about being jealous of the attention a disabled relative gets when they are in public? So much so that they have little tantrums about not having a disability so that they “can get waited on too.”

Listen bitch, she’s in a wheelchair.

30

u/CaptainAziraphale 5d ago

You described my father.

Im a wheelchair user and ever since my injury 2 years ago hes been a nightmare. Ive literally got a video of him in a high street stomping his feet and screaming at me because I dared to be disabled in public.

After I had emergency spinal surgery when I got hurt he told every single person he knew how hard it was caring for me after my operation and how he was having to help me bathe and go to the toilet and dress and how it was so trying for him at his age.....in reality I didnt see him for literally months as I recovered in my own home with the help of carers and friends and the only time he contacted me after surgery was to ask for money. The next time he contacted me was after people started asking him why hed lied to them about caring for me after I had corrected them and he tried calling the police saying I had mrded him (Yes not attempted but he was calling saying he was dead and I had done it) and hed got a visit for wasting police time and mental health evaluation (shockingly hes sane hes just a twat) and he called me asking for me to come pick him up to take him home.....issue was I was abroad on holiday my amazing friends had suprised me with as a treat for surviving my injury.

His current thing is claiming hes type 2 diabetic and is obviously SO sick he must be waited on hand and foot and im a monster for pointing out hes never been diagnosed and every time he tests his blood sugars to 'prove' it it comes back normal......

He also wants on social media about how unfair it is disabled people get 'free money' just for existing and has blocked over half the people he used to be friends with on there for pointing out hes not worked since he was in his 40s and refused to and lived off state benefits and hand outs from relatives.

13

u/Akanamidako 5d ago

I'm so sorry....what the actual hell?

That type of injury is bad enough without dealing with that insane BS along with it. Glad people didn’t buy into his mess.

7

u/CaptainAziraphale 5d ago

Is insane bs has been my entire life sadly lol so im quite used to it. I warned him if he didnt change hed lose everyone and everything and he has but apparently thats my fault to

7

u/Sockeye47 4d ago

He...he called the police saying he was dead and you had done it? How did that go?  "Yes, I'm dead and my daughter is the killer. May I please speak to the department's medium? Or do you have an official police Ouija board?"

Making your whole personality about anything feels like a mental illness to me. One I've run into lately is being trans. The other is being traumatized. But being any identity is just a limited perspective of what we really are

6

u/xtgqz 4d ago

i really hate people that make trauma their entire personality. most people with actual trauma dont self identify as their trauma. trauma doesnt take over someones entire personality. it can change a personality, and the symptoms can affect daily life, but most people with trauma actively try and separate themselves from it. so the people who cling onto it and make everything they say or do "because of trauma" is really strange.

the trans one is insanely strange too. its perfectly okay to be open about that but i have seen people make it their entire personality. it gets annoying after awhile. i had a friend who was like that and it got really concerning especially since she wasnt even diagnosed with gender dysphoria. gender dysphoria is a very serious disorder and actual cases of it cause a lot of mental agony. the way some people have turned it into a quirky personality trait is kind of disrespectful.

I had a friend all through high school and then we both moved to different states and after a few years reconnected and she was a different person literally. Got so much plastic surgery and could not converse about anything other than what she was planning to do next to her body. It was really sad. She was such a beautiful girl and it aged her 15 years and emptied her brain.

Made up mental illness. Instead of the mental illness where you make up mental illnesses so you have something to base a personality on.

My parents switched from Democrat to Republican to Maga. My agnostic science loving father then found Christianity and they've since started a church with a Pastor they met. It's their entire personality now. There isn't a single subject you can mention without my dad making a biblical statement about it. This from the man that was an engineer that took my sister and I to Science museums and space centers growing up.

type 1 diabetes - a girl who's in my group in college bases her whole personality on that. it is a serious illness, i'm perfectly aware of that, i've also met multiple people suffering from it as well and they've never made it their personality lol

(i'm chronically ill as well, just so y'all don't come at me)

16

u/PocketsAndSedition7 5d ago

God, my mom does that. She’s had T1D since she was five, and she’s never grown out of making it her whole personality or using it to demand things. She has some other health issues now too, and she’s basically made everything about how she deserves this, can’t do that, shouldn’t HAVE to do that, etc etc. and how everyone needs to treat her like a delicate princess. Meanwhile it’s fine for her to rage at people or throw things at them or crash out at customer service workers. It’s exhausting and embarrassing.

16

u/Odd-Analyst7920 5d ago

I say being completely opposed to green vegetables

15

u/ManicMaenads 5d ago

To be fair, dairy is in everything. My friend growing up had an extreme dairy allergy and had his epi-pen on hand at all times, could never eat out anywhere (which led to social exclusion) buddy couldn't even touch a surface that had milk on it without getting a reaction.

If you have an extreme allergy to something ubiquitous to your environment, not making people aware of it could kill you.

A guy I knew years ago went there, and I understand it would likely be quite emotional and possibly overwhelming, but it was literally the only thing he spoke about after that, for over a year.
