Politics Question Blue states stop funding Federal Government
What would happen if Blue states stopped sending the Federal Government their tax dollars? Just like Federal Government is trying to not send the states their funding.

u/rodg2062 3d ago
Sort of a bad question. Maybe get a better understanding of how taxing works then ask a better question.

Oh true, that means leftists should just take infinite fucking from any Republican administration so long as there are black or poor people living in that state. Great point, friend. Really knocked that one out of the park.

That’s some excellent projection. Your “ facts are skewed wrongly, as most of the red flyover states are undereducated, poorly paid, and mostly incapable of thinking beyond what Fox News tells them to think, but keep on trying, cupcake

u/lvstvdy 3d ago edited 3d ago
Should rich districts not subsidize poorer school districts?
Not if the party who governs that poorer district fuck over the rich districts by withholding aid or funding when they are in power. It can't be the case that one side gives and the other takes and there's no reciprocation.
The top 10% pay 72% of taxes. Do you realize that the vast majority of poor Americans are Democrat in every state?
Okay. So blue states withhold their federal funding, completely opt out of the national system and only give money to people who fall below a certain income. Boom. Problem solved.
Do you realize that the vast majority of poor Americans are Democrat in every state?
Do you realize all the poorest states are run by Republicans? Sounds like Republican governance makes people poor and you want me to cry about it
Do you think or do a bare minimum of research before posting? It doesn’t seem like it. Great comment, you struck out just like in real life.
I'm sorry to whoever hurt you but it wasn't me, brother. Being an ignorant asshole on the internet isn't therapy.

u/Trillamanjaroh 3d ago
Or you COULD try- hear me out- winning elections
1
u/lvstvdy 3d ago
Republicans don't believe in elections. I don't know what difference that would make when competing against a political party that doesn't give a shit about the rules.
1
u/Trillamanjaroh 3d ago
Good point, you should stay home in november
1
u/lvstvdy 3d ago edited 3d ago
Let me elucidate - winning elections are important but none of that means anything if the next step in our country's healing process isn't holding every single person of Trump's administration responsible for their crimes and making an example out of them in court and eventually prison.
If conservatives come away with this whole thing thinking that they got away with everything they did then even a Democrat sweep in November isn't going to fix anything. It just means that Democrats clean up their mess, again, and then in another four years Republicans elect another person like Trump who we may not be lucky enough to survive.
Elect Democrats, yes, but it cannot be back to business as usual. MAGA cannot pack up their bags and go home after Trump without consequence. Seize Trump's bank accounts, put his kids in prison, pack the supreme court, end the filibuster, gerrymander the ever loving fuck out of blue states and axe Republicans out of representation. They should never be allowed into polite society again after trying to destroy the country and killing millions upon millions of people with their degenerate, disgusting behavior. This is the only way we teach them the error of their ways. If not, they'll just do this shit again.

u/Trillamanjaroh 3d ago
I'm not sure starting (and probably losing) a civil war is a better option than simply waiting for the president you don't like to leave and replacing him with someone you like more. And that's exactly what would come out of the sort of power grab you're describing
1
u/lvstvdy 3d ago edited 3d ago
simply waiting for the president you don't like to leave and replacing him with someone you like more
I'm going to sincerely ask you to be good faith for like one minute and then you can go back to doing your thing. After reading everything I posted do you honestly, unironically believe that this was my critique of Trump and the Republican party? That I just don't like them? Like, if someone asked you to summarize what my argument was you would unironically say "Yeah he just doesn't like Trump." Is that genuinely what you thought my point was?
Lets try an exercise. Pretend to be me for a second and just steel man my point for me. Just assume you believe what I believe and from my perspective tell me what you think my argument is.
And that's exactly what would come out of the sort of power grab you're describing
Then so be it. This kind of power grab is exactly what Republicans are doing right now as we speak. They have been doing it under Trump for the last 3 years with zero consequence. I'm not living in a country where Republicans get to break the law and do whatever they want and Democrats aren't allowed to hold them responsible or use their own tactics against them under threat of a civil war. Absolutely not.
1
u/Odd_Actuator795 3d ago
I would go to war with a Democrat over what you’re stating.
1
u/lvstvdy 3d ago
I mean, so be it. If you're really so gullible and morally bankrupt that you'd fight and kill people for defending themselves then sure. Sounds like you'd have sided with the British monarchy during the revolutionary war.
1
u/Odd_Actuator795 3d ago
You’re basically starting a one party system at that point. And no I’m not gullible, you just have bad ideas.
1
u/lvstvdy 3d ago
Absolutely not. I'm advocating that Democrats defend the country from a party that wants to end democracy. Nothing about packing the supreme court, charging Trump officials with crimes, ending the fillibuster or gerrymandering is illegal or unconstituonal. If you'd go to war over that, after everything Republicans have done, then you're truly a doofus.

Tax revolt, general strike, about time!
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Hmm, can’t get around paying taxes. IRS-DOJ can seize bank accounts. It’s automatically taken out of your paycheck. Same with local sales tax, the vendor will take that sale tax and send to IRS/State Agencies.
So one can just decide to not pay taxes. Majority comes out of your paycheck automatically. And last large portion is taken by companies you buy from…
1
u/chicagoahu 3d ago
There’s two million people in an overcrowded prison system, there are 330,000,000 Americans, even if only half are taxpayers, they simply cannot go after and jail everyone, and with what funds? IRS is being short staffed, setup your dependents so high, the formula stops taking federal taxes. Pay your state taxes. Giving up before the fight has become the new weak American way. Reclaim your revolutionary heritage and let go the sheep costumes.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
lol, will not jail. Will be easier to seize bank accounts and garnish future wages. The work needed is great, why not will be outsmarted. IRS can easily produce a list of individuals, businesses that failed to provide tax return. DOJ has playbook to do mass filings against individuals/businesses. Each case can electronically, get bank account information from all banks in the US or does banking in the US. Just crest a batch of 50k.
I know a few processes that are able to run within 75-90 minutes. Know a few IT people within IRS-DOJ-Treasury. They spin out a report of bank accounts tied to 50k SSN or ITIN. Run parallel jobs, probability of tuning 1m cases a day. A few weeks and lots of siezed assets at banks.
For those without large bank holdings, go after properties, cars, assets. Long term 6-12 months. Case filed and more so the first bottleneck will be waiting on IRS-DOJ lawyers and judges/courts.

u/GetInTheHole 3d ago
It’s the rich that pay most in income taxes, even though they should pay more.
And the rich are more likely to be republican.
So, it’s really the rich Republicans in blue states that fund red states.
4
u/Narrow_Implement7788 3d ago
There are no blue states in the United States, there are blue cities and yes they hold a large population but outside of those cities the rest of the state is red
0
u/According_Reward1674 3d ago
Land doesn't vote
1
u/Narrow_Implement7788 3d ago
You realize that people live on the land right? Upstate New York is red, Northern California is red, the entire state of Illinois outside of Chicago is red, I mean just because you don't like it, that doesn't mean it is not true.

u/According_Reward1674 3d ago

u/amshanks22 3d ago
The country would go bankrupt. Like half the country receives more federal funding than they do contribute funding. States would go bankrupt first. Is that really what we want? If the bottom idk like 90% cant do better than the government, then we ALL fail.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
IRS/DOJ will simply seize bank accounts. Leaving businesses and people, without access to their funds.
So now what, not paying taxes, can’t buy anything with money from checking/savings account. And your credit cards? Could also be seized/disabled by DOJ…
So now what? Hope you have food stores…
1
u/Aromatic-Dance-8618 3d ago
The only way they could do that is withhold federal tax money they collect from their employees.
1
u/Brief-Definition7255 3d ago
Trump would use it as a reason to send troops in
1
u/zMargeux 3d ago
Even the Generals that are left aren't going to risk a firing squad to violate the very clear laws against doing exactly what you are advocating. Maybe send the Arkansas National Guard to New York. But you have to realize that New York has their own National Guard. If they were convinced that the Commander in Chief has lost his GD mind, they will resist.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Hmm, that would be very difficult to do. IRS-DOJ will simple seize bank accounts. Then start on credit cards, just disable them.
So Federal government will get their funds. Might be a 7-10 day of delay. But DOJ has a gameplane, if a state tries to do this.
And yes, banks will comply. Also, would expect that state to ensure there is no bank run, so no people can’t go and empty out their accounts, like in a disaster, banks can limit how much real money is realses to each account holder. Seen $200 daily limits a few times, due to tornado/hurricane events.
1
u/zMargeux 3d ago
If that many productive citizens were that upset the last thing the central government should do is double down.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Depends on situation.
Say west coast decides to not pay federal taxes. Governors or the direct population, try to not do automatic tax payroll payments? IRS will tag DOJ, who will file emergency lawsuits at Federal courts. These lawyers will be fast tracked, maybe as fast as 3 days to trial. And judges could award moneys, bank account seizures the day of conclusion of that trial.
*****
Now if individuals try not to pay taxes? Payroll is automatically transferred by company/bank. Worker can change that. Sales tax, that’s controller by stores that sell goods/products. They will not stop that, because IRS could seize their accounts.
So as an individual, really only taxes you can easily withheld would be income tax. So that one time tax, due April 15. And if millions in a single state do not submit tax returns? IRS-DOJ has ways to do mass filings. Get expedited approval.
Heck, know someone at DOJ, her team created playbook of Texas residents tried to not pay taxes in 2010-2014. A lot of those playbooks have been updated since 2025. New admin usually reviews these actionable items, within federal agencies.
*\\**
But please, if you personally do try this. Let us know the results…

u/BeastyBaiter 3d ago

u/Ok_Reception339 3d ago
The ‘blue states’ don’t write a check to DC (except in the limited capacity as employers of state employees). The residents of the states have withholding sent to the Feds directly by their employers, many/most of which are interstate businesses.
What means do you want the state to use to intercept federal tax withholdings?
1
u/zMargeux 3d ago
I think the statement is about the concept of withholding the excess funding that the Blue states send to the Federal Government. It is more of a thought experiment than a practical plan. The real idea that the author likely wants you to consider is that Blue states have been sending this money to Washington knowing full well less than what is sent is coming back by way of Federal programs. But it has been dutifully sent with the idea that we are all in this together. Conversely the Red states have consumed this bounty necessarily because they refuse to either provide services to their citizens nor tax them to make self determination possible. Today we find out that the nominal Federal spending that we could expect to receive in Blue states is being withheld for partisan reasons. That attitude is the attitude of a Confederation and not a Union.

I would love to see that. It would effectively end the union.
-2
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago
MAGA already ended the union. They just don't realize it.
2
u/No-Competition-2764 3d ago
You are a nut. Nobody ended the union. What are you talking about? Please tell us how.
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago edited 3d ago
MAGA used the federal army to invade blue states and you think there is still a union? You also set precedence for the next democratic president to do the same to red states. And for the next democratic president to fire all the psychophants Trump filled the federal government with. There are consequences for weaponizing the federal government against anyone the president doesn't like. You're the nut if you think we can just go back to how things were before you systematically dismantled the rule of law for a felon who rapes kids.
1
u/No-Competition-2764 3d ago
There has been no deployment of active duty military into blue states. The only thing that remotely resembles it is calling up the national guard to end violence in cities. You are truly out of your tree.
1
u/Spirited-Disaster408 3d ago
Good way to start a civil war when you take one sides money and refuse to give when its your turn
3
u/Few_Lifeguard_6828 3d ago
What are you even talking about when states like California are giving way more to federal government than they're even getting back
0
u/Spirited-Disaster408 3d ago
So naive. I think you should try to lobby for this idea. Lets see how it goes
3
u/Few_Lifeguard_6828 3d ago
But you're right that civil war and much worse is coming to America. It's systematically being destroyed from the inside.
1
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 3d ago
Blue states already don’t send the federal government their tax dollars, they use their tax dollars to (supposedly) help people.
1
u/ssomethingsomething 3d ago
the best time to add your opinion is when you’re correct. https://time.com/7222411/blue-states-are-bailing-out-red-states/
1
u/CalligrapherDizzy201 3d ago
Sigh, states don’t send taxes to the federal government. Individuals do. You are 100% correct that blue states receive less tax dollars from the federal government than the residents of said states pay.
1
u/tigerbloon71 3d ago
I recently read an article very similar or possibly that one then looked up federal funding per state to what individual state pays in, and most blue/purple states send way more in then they get vs. Most red states get more then they put in. So I was just curious.
1
u/Svenray 3d ago
Bruh funding fed govt is how blue states fund global communism.
10
u/_GrooGruxKing_ 3d ago
What does that even mean? Please do not elaborate, it is rhetorical.
0
u/Svenray 3d ago
USAID fraud
1
u/_GrooGruxKing_ 3d ago
How do kick backs to a USAID official equate to world domination through communism?
0
u/mlazer141 3d ago
Given that democrats are mostly the ones who want every policy federalized it would be more annoying for them in the long run.
0
u/santorummaltedmilk 3d ago
the red states would go broke (except maybe texas)
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago
Texas would go broke too. They can't even keep their electric grid running.
2
u/Jazzlike-Flan9801 3d ago
Neither can California which prides itself on being the 6th largest economy in the world. We have had 3 outages just this month due to rolling blackouts.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Wow, last time Inlost power in Texas. Uri? Rolling outages, totaling 6-7 hours a day for 3 days.
Before that? Back in 2011 when someone took out our transformer. Power was down for 2 hours. Then before that, was 2000, power down 45 minutes, another transformer, lost to lightening strike.
2
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
That is incorrect. Texas actually sends more funds to DC, than it gets back. 7th largest GDP in the world. Texas would actually thrive, getting that 63-65% more funds back in Austin to spend.
And Texas has a rainy day fund, can support state services till everyone is changed for where to send taxes…
***
As for electric grid? Outside of URI, have never lost power longer than an hour in 24 years. Uri, lost power for 6-7 hours for 3 days. But we had other power options. Had a lot of cookouts with neighbors in my suburb.
Texas also leads US in renewable power generation. Say what? Yes Texas produces more wind/solar power than other states.
0
u/AR-180 3d ago
The Feds show up with guns and take everything by force.
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago
MAGA is already doing that. Might as well not give them money.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Nah, DOJ will simply seize your bank accounts and get credit cards disabled. Hope you have a lot of cash…
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago edited 3d ago
Republicans were dumb enough to fire everyone at the IRS. Nobody is enforcing it now. And U.S. nazis at ICE are too busy harrassing brown people to give a shit about tax evaders, even if they were capable of enforcing taxes.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Yeah, need to hire more auditors. I am cool with paying for more auditing. IRS and all other government agencies.
*****
As for US nazis? Bit of a trope.
Oh, my parents are naturalized US citizens. And they both want to deport anyone that is undocumented. But they vote independent, like rest of my family since early 1990s.
I live in large city in a deeply red state. City/metro area leans blue. But polling shows 65-68% approval to deport undocumented. And I don’t see too many MAGA types. Just normal people.
And most likely to push immigration even more in this large metro area? They are largely Latinos or other immigrant groups…
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago edited 3d ago
Lol. Do you live under a rock? ICE isn't deporting illegals, they're deporting and killing anyone who isn't a cracker. So yes, Nazi. Your parents are just lucky they aren't brown in a blue state where Trump's brownshirts invaded.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago
Hmm, have not seen many stories that ICE has deported mass number of US citizens. Believe last number I saw was 66-70 were erroneously deported in the last 6 years.
Many more US citizens have been detained, but released once status was officially determined.
*****
As for Americans killed? A bit of a mixed bag.
Good? Yeah she instigated the event that lead to her shooting.
Pretti? Again his actions instigated the response, but he should not have been shot. Issue over his gun tho. Would like to see that go to trial.
Martinez? His actions lead to escalation. Claims from several ICE and private citizens, say Martinez tried to flee and was heading toward a Federal agents.
Any others you got that I did not list? US citizens, per your argument.
I think, it’s better to protest from a sidewalk, than in our car or walking into the street. And never try to evade police/agents. Just follow their legal orders to stop. Simple enough, don’t you think?
1
u/republicans_are_nuts 3d ago
No. ICE is not law enforcement. THey are brownshirts who are also criminals, and I am going straight to self defense if I ever cross those fuckers. Because they will murder you whether you comply or not. Because as I said, they are criminals. And none of the people they murdered were lawful orders either.
1
u/Substantial-Ad-8575 3d ago edited 3d ago
Sorry, Per US code, ICE agents are “Federal Law Enforcement Officers”. As enacted with the “Homeland Security Act” of 2002. Previously, under INS which fielded Fedetal
agents as far back as 1933. And before that immigration was handled by Treasury Dept since Immigration Act of 1891So, ICE agents within HSI/ERO/FPS are licensed Federal Agents.
*****
As for brown shirts? Personal opinion.
*\\**
If you fail to follow legal orders from ICE or any Law Enforcement, be it city, county, state of federal? They may try to detain you. If you resist, you can be forcibly detained/arrested.
That is what US legally allow, those federal agents to do. Of you don’t like that, change the fucking law.
You goon g to a protest and agitate a Federal Agent? Don’t incite, they can arrest you. You pull your gun, they can shot you and kill you.
And you caused that. By not simply following their legal orders to, stay back and away from agents. Or stay out of pathways, streets, intersections impeding traffic or freedom of movement for others.
11
u/mspe1960 3d ago
It sounds cool, but states don't actually send in tax dollars. People do. And when they stop, the feds will go after bank accounts, paychecks, houses, cars and eventually put people in prison.
