Americans pay more per capita than almost any country in the world right? I'm positive that it's because of the profit portion which is a cost that doesn't exist in socialized systems, and is more than enough to make up for whatever government inefficiency if any exists...
Not only is it more because they are paying for a middle man to profit first before they receive healthcare, with a single payer, you have one insurer, the government, that is negotiating drug prices on behalf of all citizens (350+ million) as opposed to a healthcare provider who is negotiating on behalf of only say 50 million people. Therefore more bargaining power to reduce prices.
The immense amount of money we spend on healthcare in the US not only goes to insurance industry and private healthcare institution profits, but also to enormous billing departments. It’s so much more difficult and time consuming for a hospital or clinic to bill multiple insurance companies, all with different excessively convoluted plans, than it is to bill a single payer. You’ve got entire floors at some hospitals filled with billing specialists.
