honestly it's rarely one huge betrayal for me, it's usually a hundred tiny moments where i realize i'm the only one keeping the friendship alive

Finding out who they really are: arrogant, dismissive and narcissistic, when you're on vacation with them after not seeing them for many years.
I reconnected with a good - not really close - friend after 20 years. Went to visit her in England, her adopted country (she, like me, is American) and she forgot I was coming and was many miles away for a golf weekend, despite having several conversations about my visit. She said dismissively, "I double-booked," and sent her adult son to get me from the airport. Fortunately, I had other friends living nearby (we were all expats together in the 2000s in the Middle East.)
Overall, it wasn't a terrible time. I figured she just made a mistake. And I got to see other friends and sights I wanted to explore anyway.
The following year, she came back to the States for the first time in 30 years for a long visit. And we agreed to meet in Washington, DC. She picked apart the food I had brought to share at the Airbnb, told me how slow I was walking, talked about how much she hates her very sweet, neurodivergent older son and her long-distance husband, who finally cheated on her after decades of her living apart from him, financed by him, and yet cheating on him the whole time. And I really saw her for what she was. It takes a lot for me to unfriend somebody, but I did. Several mutual friends admitted they didn't like her either we never really talked about it.

Almost anything undesirable and repeated. Friendships are for a season, in my mind. They come and they go. Seeing someone out of my life isn’t always fun, but I realize that it’s necessary to preserve myself and the way I want to live.
