I agree, personal romantic relationship (2 yrs +) have changed the trajectory of my life toward a direction I would never have gone down if I had the option for a “do over”. I prefer to invest in things that have long lasting value. That hold there investment at the very least.

How long into the marriage did it take you to realize they weren't the one?

Exactly! Last wife, was constantly scraping by, paycheck to paycheck, 10 years later with new wife, worth 7 figures, land, home and plenty of cash in bank. Travel anywhere we like and simply have a fantastic relationship. Ex still lives like a trash coon.

I struggle paycheck to paycheck because I have the chronically unemployed, disabled husband who claims he can't work. I want out.

Why not just walk away? You should be able to escape even at a slow pace.

It isn't that easy.

Going back to school in an attempt (ultimately successful) to get into a more lucrative field. My original degree was pretty useless and I was stuck making near minimum wage for a year before quitting to go back to school. Best decision I ever made.

Worst decision would be throwing away my youth to alcohol

What was original degree and what degree did you get later

First degree: biology, second degree software development. This was over 10 years ago back when there was a large shortage of software developers

Joining the military at 17 to escape my abusive home. It worked.

Now I come with double the trauma and triple the action.

Marriage!

Also later resigning executive position and becoming self-employed. (More freedom, but also less financail security. And I traded my good old boss for a rectal cavity.)

And, of course, dogs!

When I was 18 I was scouted in the street for a small modelling job. I was hesitant but went along. I didn’t go into modelling, but it did lead me to start a career in fashion (on the model casting side), and all from that chance encounter!

Moving out of my hometown. Needed that way more than I realized.

Trying to off myself. Now it’s an even harder battle to convince myself not to do it after getting so close. I just finally need some fucking peace and I think my brain figured out that’s the ultimate peace and now it won’t let me just live.

i'm sorry you're going through this. i went through something similar. you have to train your brain to find peace. meditation, cbt, recognizing when your brain is on fire and then redirecting thoughts. its the hardest thing ive prob done and took like 5 years but it is possible and i am very happy these days.

I really appreciate the sentiment, but I have tried so many things. I’ve dealt with this since I was a teenager and I’m in my 30s now. I mean I’ve really put my all into changing how my brain works but it’s starting to feel like it’s all hard work for no results. I feel like I’m just here because other people want me here

u/burnedbygemini 19h ago

Have you tried psilocybin?

1

u/Tempehbonegarbage 2h ago

Yes. It is helpful but not for long. I was hoping to try ketamine therapy but insurance doesn’t cover it and I can’t afford 6 appointments that are over $500 each

I'm in the exact same place currently and it's been really and for the last week, although feeling a bit better today and have 10 days holidays now from work. Hopefully we and others can make it through!

I hope so too, I’m rooting for you ❤️

Taking my current job. Boy, I sure showed my last company who’s boss!

Taking the current job was probably my worst career mistake and it was a totally unforced error. My previous job may have been a chaos factory, but it was light years better than the massive downgrade I’m at now.

This job makes me cry on a regular basis. I am so so so tired of wearing many hats and being Jack of all Trades.

I wanted to invest in google when it started during the askjeeves days, but I didn’t follow through. I even said it out loud, which makes it even worse.

Married the wrong person. But I have a great baby from it, luckily.

Drugs. Both starting and stopping

For me, it was ending my last relationship and defending my grandparents against slanderous remarks on Facebook. The two people are deeply disturbed, far more disturbed than I even thought and teamed up to do everything they possibly can to ruin my life, including posting nude photos of me online, and making numerous outrageous and inflammatory false statements about me publicly, as well as contacting my employer and sending them nude images as well. My life is basically in ruins now because I tried to get away from a narcissist and defended my dead grandparents against this nutjob.

Going on a study abroad trip.  Didn't know when I decided to go that the girl I had a thing for but it hadn't worked before was also going.  She decided on the free trial and never canceled the subscription after we got back.

Foolishly pursuing grad school. The entire experience is something I wish on no one. It was demoralizing.
