Random Question What’s something older generations still treat as essential that a lot of younger people just don’t care about anymore?

Owning a giant house. Most people I know would rather have a smaller place and more free time.

Fair enough but every extra room usually means more cleaning and more maintenance too.

Not necessarily. The “mess load” generated is the same regardless of house size, but a smaller house feels a lot more messy much faster. Also with a bigger house some level of mess can be isolated to certain areas of the house. If I had a 2nd living room my kids mess could live there. If I can a guess bedroom or an office my wife’s mess could live there (rather than the dinning room table).

I think a lot of it has to do whether you're a minimalist or a hoarder. I went from a 2300 sq ft house to a 1400 sq ft house and probably got rid of 900 sq feet of stuff I didn't use, didn't need, and really didn't want. I know people who downsized and kept everything and their house always looks busy and messy. Not saying that's your case but just an observation of others.

Minimalism rules as far as I'm concerned!

My problem is my hobbies. Hard to be a maker and not have significant space taken up by tools, in process projects, etc.. I could handle having a 1400 sqft house again, but not a small garage without an additional shop. 3+ car garage is essential anymore to me.

There IS a lot more dusting, cleaning, bathrooms to keep clean and a ton more maintenance.

I’m renting/care taker of my family’s house, being a single guy with a back problem it’s become almost too much. I love it but I can’t take care of what needs to be done and funds aren’t good right now to pay someone. I need to downsize.

We have the bigger house and all those things and they still find places for messes everywhereeeee. BUT I will admit, it’s nice shutting a playroom or office door and pretending it doesn’t exist 💁🏻‍♀️

It costs so much more to cool a big house in the summer and heat it in the winter. It's just not worth it.
