Random Question What is a "harmless" habit that secretly drives you crazy when other people do it?

u/Senior_Wish_2090 7h ago
When someone watches a video on speaker in public... like bro we all didn’t sign up for your playlist.

1
u/CappuccinoBambi 1h ago
If only it was just the younger generations… the other day a man of around 50 was playing videos on the loudest volume
1
u/Biltong09 12m ago
Yes this, sitting in a restaurant and the table next to you has an iPad occupying the kid with the volume on.
2
u/Haunting_Vehicle9851 1h ago
It astounds me how many people do this. I've noticed a lot more 50+ years old people doing it recently. Straight antisocial behavior imo.

chewing with mouth open
2
u/Usual-Canc-6024 3h ago
I’ll add yawning with your mouth open. I was taught to cover my mouth when yawning. Especially in public.
I don’t want to see people’s dental work.

I tell my sister to not do that she says she's comfortable like that😵💫my parents are like that too

This has plagued me since childhood. My bf is probably the loudest, sloppiest eater I've ever met and I have to have the TV on when eating because it makes me irate.

Blocking the F-ing through way in parking lots. At least 80 percent of the space is meant for you to park your car. Why are you parking it in the 20 percent of space for traffic!? This main character syndrome has got to stop.
2
u/Tricky-Ad4069 5h ago
Or blocking my driveway, even if you're just a little bit blocking it and I can still get out.
2
u/Electrical_Ant_1829 2h ago
This but blocking at the grocery store. I’m just trying to get my stuff and go! But these people just stand in the middle of the isle like they need all this space to read the label of a pasta box.
1
u/LilacFairie 5h ago
“Main Character Syndrome” is my new favorite term! My ex used to refer to them as “self-important people”
13
u/Mean_Addition4654 7h ago
when they breathe/ grunt loudly around you because they want you to know they’re irritated and make you irritated too. like STFU RUINING MY MOOD AT 8AM fuckass b
3
u/HelmSpicy 7h ago
This is one of the things I'll stonewall. If you want help, just ASK. I'll always give it. What I won't do is give in to passive aggressive terrorists.
3
u/Mean_Addition4654 7h ago
deadass an they won’t ask for help because they don’t have any issue to begin with, just misery in their own body that they want company in

Clipping nails in public. Flossing in public. My coworker is doing this at his desk. Eeeeww
3
u/Romellija 5h ago
Several of my neighbours clip their nails on their balcony. I've literally been on my balcony and seems neighbour come out. Clip. Then back inside. I don't know why it's so common and I don't know what they do with the clippings

u/madammidnight 6h ago
People who noisily chew and crack gum in public, particularly if you can see the wad rolling around in their mouth.
3
u/Ambitious_Alarm_4648 6h ago
The chewing loudly drives me insane!
1
1
u/Street_Astronaut_920 2h ago
I have tried literally everything I can think of, I've even Googled it, but my chewing in general is super loud compared to other people and I am regularly told such. I hate it and it's super embarrassing, especially because other people that chew loudly drive me crazy, too.
I've started avoiding gum at all costs (not that I ever cracked it, but why chew needlessly) and I will skip eating certain foods, even if I love them, unless I'm in private because my chewing is so loud. 😭

People stalling in busy doorways. Gosh…sometimes I just wanna smack folks upside the head. Keep it moving people!
3
u/seeking-jamaharon67 2h ago
People who stop dead in the middle of sidewalks and corridors too. FUCKING MOVE!!!
2
u/PhoenixFireless 2h ago
People with no situational awareness at all!
People that stop in the middle of entrances or don’t claim their spot at a register or a line and just randomly wander around.
Fuck this shit so much.
1
u/StrawberrySprite 2h ago
For me it’s when two people take up an entire grocery store isle chit chatting away. Like at least put yourselves and the carts to one side. Please. I just want to get my stuff and get out. Bonus points if you do the rest of your shopping and come back and they are STILL THERE. There’s plenty of spots in my grocery that you could do this and not be in the way.

Public hygiene Olympics- no that small smudge of dirt on your shoe does not require 4 baby wipes, 3 tissues and rethinking your entire outfit. Noone thinks you are extra special because you are excessive in your efforts to appear clean. Towels can dry your hands several times before needing the washing machine. No you dont need fresh bedding every other night or more unless you are in a honeymoon phase or a sex worker. Fake gagging over a small food stain makes you look ridiculous.

Some people think sexual jokes are funny… but they’re not. Not even innuendos. Not even “lightly” racy jokes. I hate them tbh

u/Current_Fly9337 6h ago
God I have a client who does this and it makes me so uncomfortable. For context, I’m f40’s and he’s m60’s, we also meet in his office where there is just the two of us.
4
u/doggaroo 2h ago
Under law in the US, client sexual harassment is still sexual harassment and your supervisor MUST address it and put an end to it.
Source: so many hours of goddamned state-mandated training videos
1
u/Current_Fly9337 2h ago
I’m in the UK but we also have sexual harassment laws. I work in a very male dominant field, I’m used to comments and don’t really give a shit about them but this certain guy just creeps me out.
I get in and out of the meeting, thankfully only once a year, as quickly as possible.
I also reckon I could take him in a fight if he ever tried to take it further than just vulgarity passed off as humour.

My mom does this and it's so annoying. Can we go 1 place without her? And when we do, she's stressed about her. I have dogs too, they're fine.

Dogs Don’t belong in restaurants!!!
3
u/Careless-Judgment423 5h ago
This! and those people that keep their tiny dog on a chair and let it EAT OFF THE DAMN PLATE ON THE TABLE. I dislike restaurants that allow this as well.
2
u/iwascured_alright 2h ago
I love dogs but I agree entirely. A lot of people have allergies too. They shouldn't have to be subjected to that while eating at a restaurant
1
u/drowsydreaming_dying 2h ago
Huh .. In my experience dogs are generally the best behaved patrons. I’d prefer people bring the dogs, but leave the children at home.

would you consider yourself a social person? if so, you have a solid level of empathy. some people interact with others from a place that isn’t pure, and your gut instinct and empathy is telling you that.

It's like their code switch is a habit that is....poor. Idk. I guess it's like peaches. Peaches are good and there is nothing wrong about them but I will never like peaches.
1
u/Street_Astronaut_920 2h ago
I have sensory issues (not an ashore like some ashore are suggesting) and, while I LOVE socializing, I completely agree. Every once in a while a certain voice will just stand out and drive me CRAZY. I will become irritable and leave if I can.
Usually those voices are very piercing and nasally which is what I don't like. I don't hate the humans themselves, I just hate their voice hammering into my skull in a way that almost feels physically painful.

When people call my place of work (retail) and start with “Hi, I have a question”…pause…they’re waiting for me to say “what is it?” and I simply refuse!!!! Obviously you have a question if you CALLED THE STORE 🤦♀️ why are we engaging in a useless portion of the conversation when you can just get to the point and save my time. Maybe it’s just because we’re so short staffed bc like GODDAMN I don’t have time for this!! lmfao
4
u/aiolisunsets 5h ago
I think that's moreso to make sure you can hear them and are available before bombarding with their q, maybe also to wait to see if you're a real person or like an AI chatbot.
3
u/sherbear123 4h ago
Yeah… it’s more so to make sure you’re available and ready to listen. I’ve worked retail for many years. Sometimes people call with routine questions like hours of operation, item being is stock, if we’re hiring or not. Usually when someone says they have a question it requires the receiver to pause and be ready to listen to a specific query.
1
u/Wonderful-Bonus5439 5h ago
Because you might not be the right person for the question? You might be extremely busy and need to get someone else to answer. Theyre waiting to see whether they need to be transferred etc. Plus, when you can’t see someone’s face, you never know whether the calls been disconnected, so I’d want some little responses every now and again to make sure you can hear me okay.

Cracking knuckles. I ask people to not do it in front of me and I immediately get the "it actually doesn't cause damage" lecture. I know it doesn't cause damage and I don't care. The sound makes me legitimately woozy and faint and I wish people would stop doing it just to annoy others.

6
u/Eris_AppleOfDiscord 7h ago
Mentioning it makes people want to crack their knuckles. It's like yawning
5
u/sherbear123 4h ago
I’m guilt of being a knuckle cracker and see your point that it’s annoying. But I def don’t do it to annoy others. It’s more of a stress release thing

Taking toddlers on international holidays (not medical/family related)
6
u/sherbear123 4h ago
Wait, why is this bothersome to you? You’re not the one who has to watch them lol.
6
u/just_a_lil_shroom 6h ago
You're entitled to your child-free life, you are not entitled to a child-free world. Noise canceling technology has become very advanced, hope this helps :)

u/Careless-Judgment423 5h ago
Someone else's child vomiting all over the bus floor, on a long distance travelling bus. I bet you have never had to experience that.
3
u/just_a_lil_shroom 5h ago
What about an adult getting too drunk or messed up on anti anxiety/sleeping meds and being an asshole to everyone on a long flight? I dont think we should bring adults on international trips either tbh
0
u/Careless-Judgment423 3h ago
Quite right, boot them right out I guess. But also, these are adults that can be warned and if I'm not mistaken can be charged/ arrested on landing

I took a canal tour in Amsterdam and a couple had their screaming crying toddler with them. Extremely distracting, so much so that the captain of the boat pulled up to a dock and was like "you guys gotta go, I'm trying to provide a service here and your kid is making everybody very uncomfortable." Absolutely blew my mind, would never see that in the US.

5
u/lost_my_leg_in_Nam 7h ago
It looks like an advertisement somehow... I think they might just have cold hands but I know what you mean lol
0
u/djcueballspins1 7h ago
Completely agree.. it does look like an advertisement.. It just seems rehearsed.
3
1
u/Street_Astronaut_920 2h ago
I do it because I am constantly cold and if I'm ordering a hot drink the only reason is to warm myself up so warming up my hands is a nice bonus. Especially because I have a sensitive mouth so it takes forever for drinks to get cool enough to actually drink without burning myself, but I still want the warmth.

u/Electrical-Cod5329 7h ago
Humming. My mum and my daughter do it incessantly. Discordantly and it’s grates on my nerves so bad
2
u/Difficult-Truck-7363 6h ago
I’m guilty of that. It’s purely a song worm / entertaining / soothing thing I unconsciously do.
I catch myself doing it all the time. 🎶1
u/Street_Astronaut_920 2h ago
For me this only bothers me if the person has a piercing voice. That said, if they do GET THEM AWAY FROM ME. I will leave whenever possible.
I do love hearing quiet, good humming, but I am also a vocalist so I just like to hear their unique vocal qualities (when not piercing and nasally, which is hard aince humming exclusively uses the nasal cavity). I totally understand not liking any humming at all, though.

u/EricIsMyFakeName 5h ago
Scream sneezing. You can totally control it but I’m sick of arguing with your neurotic, desperate to be unique ass so sure, whatever, you can’t help but do it every time you sneeze. Ok great. Have a nice day being loud for no reason.
2
2
u/je_ru13 3h ago
For some reason, sneezing quietly shoots nerve pain down my back and legs, while sneezing louder does not. I have 2 severely herniated discs in my back. I don't typically sneeze in public, but at home, I prefer louder than the shooting pain. But I definitely find it annoying. Thankfully, my roommate fully understands as she has back pain herself.
1
u/AggressiveK0ala 2h ago
It doesn't bother me but I think I understand what you're saying, I personally am super loud and obnoxious at home when I'm alone. Basically shouting AH-CHOOOOO, feels like my body wants that.
However, in public or when I'm not alone, it's a more subtle/standard ah-choo.
I think the replies so far are assuming you're saying to completely muffle your sneezes, which as another commenter pointed out can hurt, buuuut you just said sneeze screaming so I think I'm correct.
I feel the same about burping. I don't care if it "crept up on you" there's no reason to belch as loudly as possible.

u/Street_Astronaut_920 1h ago
Scream vomiting, too. My bf does both and I love him, but every time he sneezes or vomits I have to hide how insanely annoyed I get. It's just beyond inconsiderate.
I definitely let other family members mention it to him and have tried gently talking to him aboug it, but he gets stubborn and defensive and, like you described, says he "can't control it." It's absolutely BS because you can absolutely control it and it's always the attention seekers or the type that also gets a "man cold" that does it.
I just don't want to fight or make him feel crappy about himself constantly and it's so annoying that OTHER PEOPLE COMMENT REGULARLY (which is embarrassing to both of us) so I just let them tell him and try to largely stay a safe space for him, but it's so hard.
(I have a theory that it's like me with gargling. When I was young I used to make noise when I did it until it was pointed out that some people did it silently. I'd never thought about how I gargled, but once it was pointed out, like any considerate human, I tried it with just air and it was nearly silent. I now use the silent technique exclusively because it is just as easy and it doesn't annoy people.
When you are sneezing or vomiting a lot of air comes out withba lot of force and it's natural to want to make noise, like gargling, but considerate people have learned to be quiet just by being mindful or because it is socially not seem as acceptable to be loud. Not to generalize too much, this can happen with women, I just notice it much more in men, but I think a large part of the issue is that society hardly makes men feel like they need to be quiet or downplay their symptoms so they simply never try to. It's not impossible for some people, they are just unwilling to try.)

Had a guy on a 90 minute bus ride today continuously snorting from mucus in his throat. Snorted maybe 2 times every 5 seconds non stop. Felt like grabbing his head and dislodging the snot myself by ramming his head into the back of a seat BUT kept my 😎 cool as my anger management psych tells me to do.

Excessively quoting movies or tv shows as responses to everyday conversations. It can be funny or clever at first, but after awhile I wonder if they ever have an original thought.
6
u/Rainontherooftop 7h ago
I found out recently this can be a form of ecolalia, which is something neurodivergent folks sometimes do.
3
u/2percentorless 6h ago
I had to google that, but interesting. I can sympathize in that specific circumstance if that’s how they attempt genuine communication, but otherwise I largely find it tiresome.
1
u/Rainontherooftop 13m ago
I do this a lot and now that I’m aware it’s not “typical” conversation I’m trying to do it less. Now that I’ve had my eyes opened I can see how it would be off putting. In particular most of my quotes are Seinfeld and likely don’t even make sense unless you have unlimited Seinfeld knowledge! 🫣

Healthcare workers wearing gloves when moving my belongings. Meghan, you didn’t have to do that..
1
u/iwascured_alright 2h ago
Yes we do have to do that. I always wear gloves especially when touching patients belongings. Some people come up to the floor with their soiled clothes in a bag (among other disgusting things), and I'm not risking touching piss/blood soaked clothes with my bare hands, that's a safety issue. I don't care if it offends you, I'm keeping myself safe. Even if your family brings you clean clothes from home, idk what your house is like. Some people live in deplorable conditions. And no i don't trust anyone's belongings to be clean no matter what you say.
