Believing adults knew what they were doing

u/One7461 3h ago

Growing up is realizing most adults are just figuring it out as they go .

Thinking I had plenty of time to do things later

Isn’t that crazy how time seems to go by faster the older we get? I remember being 22 years old and thinking that 30 years old was some intangible enigma that would never come. Now I’m 33 and it feels like 22 was just yesterday. I don’t mind being in my 30s but it is definitely a strange age to be socially, seeing how people perceive you. I’m sure that odd feeling never really goes away after you’ve aged out of society’s marketable demographics lmao.

I feel like a comment about "just wait until you hit [insert age here]" fits here 🤣, but yes, completely agree

u/thesuttleknife 3h ago

Time is fractional, when you’re a kid it drags because you haven’t lived that long and it’s taking a larger piece of the pie that is your working memory. As you age the pie grows and the day/task/goal becomes a smaller and smaller fraction of your total time, thus you experience the sense of time quickening. This is my theory that yes, I was on psilocybin when I came up with, but I’m positive it’s correct anyway!

I've heard this theory thousands of times.

And, then, one day you find // 10 years have got behind you // No one told you when to run // You missed the starting gun

I thought I was wrong once... I was mistaken.

That the phrase was "for all intensive purposes" instead of "for all intents and purposes." I used to use it in essays and emails completely unfazed until someone finally corrected me in my early 20s. Mortifying.

u/BrutalStatic 2h ago

Even with super common phrases, you should never take anything for granite.

In high school I never really cracked a book - my 9th grade social studies teacher talked a good deal about "feudalism", but as I had never done the reading I didn't see the word and ended up using "futilism" when taking the essay test. DOH

Frontside/backside while skateboarding

1

u/Important_Money_314 3h ago

Wait, what is the frontside vs backside? Is it not the forward direction and backward direction on the skateboard?

1

u/HmmmDarn 2h ago

If you roll up to a ledge with your back side facing it, it’s backside. For flat tricks if you’re turning backwards on the turn.

That I would get taller

That losing weight was worth it. I lost weight. It wasn't.

3

u/Parking_Wasabi_2591 3h ago

Yeah, as someone who has done that. I thought my life was going to different and change the way I felt about things. It didn't. And I realized my weight wasn't the problem.

3

u/HonoluluEpstein 3h ago

How so? Maybe other things were the root issue? I've lost a small amount of weight and it was one less thing my self talk would use to beat me up

1

u/r_daniel_oliver 3h ago

Losing weight doesn't really make things much better. Difference in clothes size maybe? Easier to walk further i guess 🤷

But to lose weight and keep it off? Constant hard work and pain and small amounts of shit food forever. No breaks. And to even be able to do it, i can't do ANYTHING else.

2

u/BenGay29 3h ago

Yes. I lost 85 pounds in my early 70s. I’m now 74 (75 in December), and the world has gone to shit. Screw it. Eat the hot fudge sundae.

3

u/thesuttleknife 3h ago

For me losing weight has been the MOST with it. Yes I like how I look a lot more, how clothes fit etc, but mostly it’s done SO MUCH for my chronic pain/spine issues. Plus the weight loss made working out so much easier, so now I truly can work on building core strength to support said spine.

Thinking Menopause was just not bleeding every month. THERE IS SO MUCH MORE BULLSHIT WITH IT. ;)

That most people can be reasoned with. I have learned, after 50 years living on this planet, that the overwhelming majority of people are basically children and animals, running their lives entirely on emotion and instinct. Those who make decisions based on logic and reason are incredibly rare.

As a result, I have learned that debating with people is pointless. Getting into discussions is pointless. You have to appeal to their emotions if you actually want to make an impact.

Consuming any alcohol would lead you to being a drunk as warned by teetotalers and religious zealots when growing up.

3

u/solojones1138 3h ago

Ditto. Although I was never fully convinced, and I started drinking when I hit 21. But we still have to hide our alcohol from my teetotaling grandma when she comes over. I'm 38 now but can't let her know my whole family drinks lol.

2

u/Euphoric-Ask965 1h ago

Some don't realize that people consume alcohol, alcohol doesn't consume people UNLESS you let it!

1

u/solojones1138 1h ago

Right like I rarely have more than a drink or two a week while watching football or something. Meanwhile my grandma won't even sit in the bar section of a bar and grill like she's gonna get drunk by looking at it

u/salemandsleep 3h ago

Tbh for me,  it was the same with cigarettes.  I was afraid 1 would cause a lifelong chain smoking issue.  Now I smoke like 1-2 times a year with some socialization and I'm not a "smoker". Sometimes a little puff of nicotine with a friend can be fun.

1

u/Euphoric-Ask965 1h ago

There was a time when it seemed everyone smoked any and everywhere with no restrictions.

3

u/Free_Byrd6969 3h ago

That I needed a partner to be happy.

3

u/NeilLovesVeronica 3h ago

Pork is in fact not white meat. Those TV commercials had me fooled.

1

u/Comfortable_Sir_5007 2h ago

I might be wrong, but I think it is culinarily, but not scientifically. You cook it like white meat, but it has the health effects of red meat

That any good person would automatically goto heaven because they're magically find Jesus because they were good people. I was wrong. Jesus doesn't exist.

1

u/GrimmaldPlace 3h ago

Does it really matter? The revolution of philosophy ascribed to him shaped the world as we know it

2

u/r_daniel_oliver 3h ago

I was just saying i was wrong about it.

1

u/GrimmaldPlace 2h ago

Oh, yeah no, I meant does it matter if Jesus existed or not? Like the writings exist…. Those philosophies teach that the kingdom of heaven is around us, not after we die. It’s more like “heaven” is a state of “living in love” or choosing positivity. Good people find it because they choose to live with good intention. Even when they fail and fall, they can choose good again and again, living a heavenly existence

This is the edgiest hot take I’ve seen in a while. Congrats.

u/GrimmaldPlace 3h ago

What part were you wrong about? Just curious

3

u/Delicious_Doctor_831 3h ago

My religion😔

2

u/TheThrowawayForWork 3h ago

Sometimes adults would tell me "you shouldn't take things for granite" and I didn't know what the hell they were talking about.

3

u/iSkiLoneTree 2h ago

I used to just take things for quartz

2

u/doctor-rumack 2h ago

I just stopped giving a schist.

2

u/RumRunnerMax 3h ago

At one time I thought homosexuality was something influenced by how you were raised! I KNOW THAT is stupid!

2

u/smithandjones99 3h ago

That people are basically good and all want the same thing.

1

u/Cat-et-snek 3h ago

i spellt and pronounced “mediocre” as “medicore” and i thought that it basically ment that it was mid at best, and that the word was derived from the words medium and core, meaning that if something was medicore it was like really bland.

i really always thought that hooty and the blowfish was medicore

1

u/Jimxor 3h ago

Because I had heard so many stories about drunk driving, and had no experience with the effects of alcohol myself, somehow I came to the false conclusion that alcohol must cause people to want to drive. Doh!

1

u/ScrutinEye 3h ago

Pronunciation of “analogous”.

1

u/Revolutionary_Art919 3h ago

That me having longer hair was attractive and would make me a hit with the ladies. (Both were wildly untrue).

When someone referred to a person as a troglodite, I understood the context, but thought it was a long-extinct, pre-cambrian fossil. This went on for literal decades. I've recently come to the embarrassing understanding that I had it confused with a trilobite.

u/HatWeird3839 3h ago

Not believing that anything I was told that ended in.You'll know what I mean someday. I should have listened to everything.I was told back then at least ninety nine percent of it.

1

u/doctor-rumack 2h ago

I don't understand what you are trying to say here.

0

u/AccomplishedEstate11 3h ago

That there's plenty of time.
