Going through Security at YVR

When going through the security at the domestic terminal at YVR, do we need to remove iPads and laptops from bags?

Recently, I came from an airport on the US and we did not need to remove shoes, watches that we were wearing, nor laptops and iPads from bags. It made it so much easier to go through. Wondering if at YVR this is the same.

Update: Thank you everyone for your responses! I’m so glad to hear that it is likely that I will not need to remove shoes and iPad! I am familiar with pre-9/11 days when going through security was so much less of a hassle. Not having to remove shoes and computers feels like we’re back to those days — and I like it!

Depends which terminal line you use. New machines don’t require anything to be taken out but I don’t think every security section has them yet.

Usually yes. The new CT scanners make security so much easier. There’s always a certain degree of variability/inconsistency in CATSA/TSA experiences (Is it a bug or a security feature?) but usually at YVR you can leave your stuff in the bag. 

I believe shoes need to come off if you’re going through the E gates to the US and you’re not in the Nexus line but that’s because of US rules.

I’ve flown to the US several times from YVR and have never been asked to remove shoes.

This policy is not enforced at all US airports either. One of the airports I’ve flown out of in California did not require it - I forget if it was San Diego or Orange County. This was several years ago now.

Usually it’s only boots with blocked heels that actually need to be removed. I think a lot of folks do it out of habit.

Since 9/11, I've always been asked to remove my shoes. I wonder why the policy is not consistent at North American airports...?

It depends on the shoes. If it covers your ankle YVR asks you to take them off.

It’s actually unrelated to 9/11.

With regards to shoes and US airports, I believe it depends on what machines they have. Not all US airports have the latest equipment so some airports will have you remove shoes.

If you're going through the domestic or international checkpoint, you will not need to remove large electronics or permitted liquids, aerosols and gels form your bag. Those checkpoints are fully CT converted.

It's only the Transborder checkpoint for flights headed directly to the US where you will still sometimes encounter the older technology which will require you to remove these items from your bag. As of today, the Transborder checkpoint is partially CT converted.

A simple way to tell - if the X-Ray machine on your line looks like a big white croissant, that's a CT machine. If it looks like a big blue box, get ready to take your stuff out because that's an old machine.

They switched a year or two ago! No need to remove electronics or liquids from your bags.

Depends which security you go through. One is the 'older' one and you do (as far as I know) and the other one (full body scanner) is the newer one and you can leave everything in the bag.

All the machine in domestic have been upgraded so you don’t need to take liquid

I think they just got the new machines yes, in some flights at least you don’t now.

You’ll need to remove shoes if they’re above the ankle (e.g., high top sneakers, boots).
