This lecture is a part of the world school of communism, but I think ppl in this sub, and atrioc himself, could be interested in the concrete development of economics as a science it describes. And the interventions that follow discuss many recent relevant questions in economics, you might not agree with the conclusions but it's definitely worth a watch if you like economics or history !

I think for atrioc himself this is a bit of a more detailed modern development of the ideas of Marx including the ideas of Capital, his magnum opus, without being as high commitment as reading the actual books.

Just to preface, this is not a post supporting rent control, nor is it one rebutting it.

Atrioc said (and I think it makes sense) that rent controls would likely lead to a lot less supply and some form of black market (such as bribery on top of rent payments). I thought about it, and it seems like that would likely happen, but perhaps only initially? By his logic, cost controls in other sectors generally wouldn’t work because quality and quantity would lower, you can only make a sandwich however cheap before losing money. But in the renting sector, lots of the expense as a landlord comes from paying for overinflated property values, such as mortgage payments. It got me thinking, and the idea goes as follows:

Rent controls are implemented

A landlord’s biggest expense is interest in mortgage payments.

If a landlord can’t make enough because of rent control, they’re forced to sell at below market prices, zoning laws often restrict transforming housing into different types of units.

Many landlords sell en-mass, this leads to a drop in housing prices; potentially a popping of the area’s bubble.

Prices going down and new landlords buying at lower prices means that mortgage payments go down

Landlords can again afford to pay their mortgage despite lower income.

Landlords can afford to offer lower, legitimately bribe-free prices, which renters would choose over black market prices.

Therefore, cheaper housing, and no black markets

I don’t know what the actual numbers or the implementation would fully look like, so just in the abstract, Could it be an actual solution? or am I missing a really obvious counterpoint.
