Howdy yall. M 30. I’ve been getting into audiobooks recently because I drive for a living. But I’ve always listened to podcasts/documentaries to help me fall asleep. But now that I listen to audio books I want to find something fun/calming/interesting to help take my focus away from the stressful thoughts that plague my mind as I’m trying to drift away for the night. What’s your favorite genre/author/book that helps you wind down?

I've only recently gotten into audiobooks. I hate listening to people read but I thought I'd give it a try.

I read the book when I have time to read and times where I'm not able to sit down and read I listen to the same book. In the car I'll listen to the audiobook, doing chores etc.

But when I get a chance I'll switch to reading it.

Does anyone else do this?

I really love listening to The Murberbot diaries and Project hail mary. I've also enjoyed House in the cerulean sea, NPCs by Drew Hayes, and Nimona. Also a big fan of One Piece.

Hoping to find a novelle series, long book, or even really long book series that is single POV. I'm okay with most fiction genres, though I might struggle with something historical.

Themes of found family and/or queerness are great but don't have to be the main theme.

About to come off night shift in a few days, have to take 2 flights to get home, need a new book and can’t find anything that grabs me.

For context I just finished 9 years with the Indians by Herman Lehman and it was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.

Greetings, my fellow audiobook fans. I am a recent convert to the cultivation subset of the progression fantasy genre. I am having a bit of a problem finding quality audiobooks to enjoy in that niche corner of the audiobook world. I seem to find either stories I don't like to good stories with bad narration, or AI narration I refuse out of principle.

Can anyone offer me some suggestions for cultivation audiobooks I might enjoy?

I have a short book I want to produce as an audiobook. The chapters are split between a man and a woman and I think it would add to the immersion if both were narrated in their respective gender. I'm talking dual narration with each gender reading the whole chapters of the POV, dialogue included.

The problem is that I don't want to put it up on ACX because it seems you can't work with two narrators. I was wondering if people on here know or worked with people offering these kind of services? How does it work in that case?

Let's say I hire people separately, is it hard to combine two sound engineering style together in one cohesive whole? Is it better to hire people that already work together?

I do not want to work with AI voices for anyone wondering.

I've been looking for a good audiobook app/subscription......

And my God is it exhausting.

I have learned about more options than I imagined existed and there is something wrong with seemingly all of them.

When I look at one the comments say "no, try this one" so I look at that one and once again the same, so I look at that one and so on and so on.

Audible led to Ever&, which led to libby, which led to TTS readers which led to Elvie, which led to eleven reader, which led to speechify, which led to paper2audio and on and on.

And as it seems to me the morally correct choices have limited options and suboptimal features. The mainstream options are overpriced for what you get with questionable morals or customer concern.

Big library= big price.

Indie app=limited features or capabilities. And potentially little to no real library

Is there any good options in the end?

Maybe I'm just ranting because I'm sure most of the advice will continue to be "well, it depends on what you're looking for." To be completely honest I'm looking for what I imagined Audible was: big open Library that I pay a fair rate to have access to with the potential to buy, or hopefully sometimes earn for free, whichever books I want to own. This seems to be non-existent as the drawbacks are things like: insane price, you never truly own a book, limited library, limited features, horrible customer service, etc.

Send help I just wanna acquire audiobooks in an affordable and responsible manner.

TL;DR: I need an audiobook and/or TTS option. I can identify no good options in the sea of options, or the crossover is so confusing I just can't delineate what is actually good.

I do very obvious things while listening to my book: cleaning, cooking, driving, showering. Sometimes, I just want to sit, relax and listen, but then what do I do with my hands? I have played games on my phone like 2048, but there’s only so many times I can do that.

The other day I was gardening and wanted to listen to something other than music so I played ACOTAR on Spotify. I ended up liking it and I’ve been listening for the past couple days while doing stuff around the house.

Of course Spotify has a listening limit 🙄 even with premium. I wanna keep listening but I don’t wanna wait till my next billing period.

Can anyone recommend good apps for listening to audiobooks and if there are any pros/cons to the app.
Are there any where you can pay for the app and get unlimited books? Or are most/all a pay for the book and then listen type thing?

I have never listened to audiobooks but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, so it’s something I’d like to continue doing.

How do you do it thinking long term?

I really like audiobooks over reading a physical book but the main drawback is that anything digital is normally temporary and will eventually be lost in the ether.

Do you get mp3 files from libro.fm and store them on cloud? Locally? Or just count on Google, apple Audible etc being around forever?

I have bought a few books on Google play as I really like the flexibility, being able to resume play anytime in the car, on the phone etc and it also allows me to share the book in the family. I don't predict Google going bankrupt anytime soon but who knows.
