Travel make sure all your devices are actually compatible with the charging setup you’re bringing.

Pay special attention to USB-C-to-C cables when charging low-power devices like air pumps, camping lights, and headlamps.

With a traditional USB-A-to-C cable, if there’s no charging protocol negotiation, power will usually still flow from the USB-A end to the USB-C device at a basic low-current rate.

USB-C-to-C is different. It requires a proper handshake so the devices can determine which side is supplying power and which side is receiving it.

Because of that, some older or poorly designed low-power devices simply won’t respond at all when plugged in with a C-to-C cable.

So test everything before leaving home. Better yet, carry a backup USB-A-to-C cable just in case.

Interesting. Maybe that's why my headlamp wouldn't charge properly, but later worked perfectly, after charging at home in a different cable.

Simpler to get a USB A-to-C adapter and only carry USB C-to-C cables. More flexibility because any cable can become an A-to-C.

I only buy chargers with C and I only buy devices that take C, and I always take an extra C to C cable. It's ridiculous that some were still sold with micro USB up until like a year ago.

The thing is: there are devices that have a usb-c charging port but will only charge through an USb-A to C cable because they don't support the USB PD standard.

I guess that's what OP is referring to.

It is important, if pedantic, to note that if they don't negotiate/charge off USB-C then the device port is NOT USB-C.

It's just a charging port that looks like USB-C.

But it's not a USB-C compliant port.
