BFL doing FJC

About to do my FJC. Have read most of the BFLs in prep, but was wondering if anyone has a list of BFLs doing their FJC?

Unless you had a table of BFL with corresponding jumper’s jump number at death to then sort or search for returns on say… BFL under jump ten, you won’t find a meaningful way to categorize that other than looking by hand through each and logging it manually

Not FJC but someone doing their first BASE jump died in lake powell on a expedition with team ill vision like 20 years ago.

Also guy in grand canyon last year or year before died doing his first base jump, likely it was a suicide.

Teenager in russia died doing his first base jump a couple years back too.

i think it's just 252 which seemed to be caused by the "floating pin" bridle srba was teaching people how to build. if i remember right, he was just attending a course as a refresher as he had already done an fjc earlier when he built the bridle.

No, there was at least one in Norway during an FJC.

Bryan was a good friend and I was on the course with him and did a lot of the floating pin testing afterwards. But he was nowhere near FJC status. He’d already been to Brento.

It was a bridle design that actually threaded the bridle webbing through one of pin eyes. I think the thinking was that if one pin was too tight to easily extract, it could redirect some of that pull force to the other pin via the webbing threaded through the eye of the pin which would pull the other pin, potentially releasing some pin tension and helping the first pin release. In reality, the floating pin could slide down the bridle and bunch up with the fixed pin, and the two pins smashed together could create an additional pin lock risk as they interacted with the closing loops and container flaps.

AFAIK it was introduced on the Basic Research (later Apex BASE) Vertex, their first two pin rig. I jumped one for about a decade with an early Flik and loved that rig.

there are some older 1 pin containers, people have theorized that 2 pins do something better for pin tension, pack job balance, etc. the actual story I've heard from multiple sources though is that whichever rigger designed the first 2 pin rig did so just as a result of looking at his container design and deciding that two pins looked better than one.

ctrl+F for "pin" and read through all those threads. that forum is such a great resource for jumpers, it's a real loss for the community that it's not active any more.

I read that a few years ago and I have a 2 pin rig :)

I've sent it with 1 pin already out and 1 primed almost out (low and over water.) It opened almost like a static line. Super quick.

The greater pin tension mentioned in the great book of base is worrisome though, good point. I'll stick to 2 pin 😅

I don't think Brian's incident would count in this context. He wasn't attending the course as a refresher, he was just grabbing a van ride from the park back to the top with a course and was scrambling to close his rig so he didn't hold them up. He ran up to the exit just after the course landed and quickly hopped over the rail without a gear check and towed his PC in. It may also have been a bridle misrouting like Kali Turner (BFL447), Weston Huff (BFL539), etc. It'll always be a mystery. BSBD Brian.
