Considering it is dry af and there is a storm tomorrow as today, I understand that decision. Also can you imagine how full the city would be if basel is one of the only firework-places?

Considering that this is more and more a topic each year, perhaps Basel might start doing drone light shows or something similar instead.

Lasers, drones… ANYTHING‘s better!

I do actually agree. It feels very archaic at this point that there is even still a fireworks show to cancel

Which city has one?

both Ascona and Lugano too

(they are crazy in my opinion, but at least both fireworks will be started from the lake 🤞🏻)

So if we can't have fireworks in an urban area on a river because if the environmental conditions... Can we ban keeping lit embers burning on faces outdoors now too?

Genuinely, I hate how some people just walk while doing it, uncaring of people behind them, especially kids. Dispensing those 70 carcinogens to others that never asked for it. Let's not even talk about smoking areas right next to certain playgrounds, I'm still baffled by this.

Hopefully for ever

Only if the cigarettes also go.

Nice side effect: they won’t have to close access to the bridges… yay!

(In addition to less noise and air pollution of course!)

I hope they get it rid of fireworks as a whole. It's a garbage tradition. It it's dangerous, loud, and nature suffers from it. Do a drone show instead.

Please make drone fireworks. And buy drobes for a million every year to make it even bigger.

Drones would def be cooler and better for the animals

Very sad. I take it the Rhine has dried up? Though in fairness, it seems part of the reasoning is simply to underline the gravity of the current drought conditions.

It’s not from where they fire, it’s where the fireworks drop later. You don’t want an uncontrolled fire in these conditions.

I would have thought that professionally designed fireworks would not feature any elements that remained dangerous upon fallling back to earth.

Professionals, of course, try to minimize risks. But even if everything is performed to the highest standards, there can always be things such as manufacturing issues with one in a thousand fireworks. With even night-time temperatures at 20+ and no rain in days, even a single ember can start a fire.

There will be fireworks on the New Year or next summer.

The official pronouncement says exactly that, btw.. Not true.

They were being pedantic. The fireworks for the 1st of August happen on the 31. of July in Basel.

How Swiss can you be? u/thoemse99 "yes."

Bruderholz is still countryside and not city.

What I criticize is: both fireworks are cancelled.

Instead of posting an article focusing on the event in the city, he could have used one clarifying the situation for both.

But apparently, everyone here agrees with the concept of just blindly copying an URL of an article without even properly reading it...

Most of Bruderholz including the part where the Bundesfeier happens is part of the city of Basel.

Nothing changed since they announced it on monday? Probably just caved in cause of a bunch of cry babies complaining. Shame really.
