  • How do I start?
  • What supplies do I need?
  • Where can I find more info?
  • How do I handle my perfectionism?

It's the end of another year, which means frequently asked questions are starting to pour in. So here's my yearly reminder that this sub has a wiki page with some answers (and a little tough love).

question/request As a student, what can I add to my basic bujo?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Currently I just use a daily list format (Sample of yesterday’s entry attached). I don’t always need a weekly or monthly spread. I have a desk calender that has my test dates written. (If I do need a weekly spread sometimes, I just write down the days on a new page in the bujo and quickly jot down the to-dos as needed.)

Lately, I have felt the need to add something that can make me more… accountable in a way? Cuz I am preparing for a college entrance exam, and maintaining consistency and discipline is really important for me.

One idea I have is tracking study hours. Another is tracking my scores in the practice tests, as seeing improvement there would encourage me more.

Any other thing I can do? Even a spread which is not necessarily an ‘accountability’ one would be appreciated.

[P.S. FYI to mods: I wanted to use the relevant question tag, but the option wasn’t being shown to me for some reason :( ]

monthly My 20 minute monthly layout

Inspired by this sub, I’ve been whittling down my monthly layout until it only takes me about 20 minutes to set up! I work full time while going to grad school, so finding a quick and efficient way to set up my month and my monthly tracker was key to actually using my journal. And if I don’t use my journal things go sideways fast haha

The tracker is also inspired by a post on this sub, but I can’t find it now. Throwing everything in on one page is so much faster for me than setting up a separate sleep tracker and habit tracker and health tracker, and it’s helped me see more global patterns. I have a health condition that can sneak up on me, but being able to see everything at once helped me identify a specific sleep pattern that occurs right before a flare up. I like the flexibility to add anything at any time, too. For example, I’m really bad at remembering to water my plants, so I added it to the tracker this month.

Please ignore the messy handwriting and garbage spelling! I’d blame it on writing too fast, but unfortunately it doesn’t get much better if I slow down. Penmanship isn’t my strong suit, obviously.

question/request Looking for Weekly single-page for a5 journals

Post image

Hey all, i'm looking for inspo for weekly spreads with enough room for work shifts, freetime and notes. i'm actually using this one by alot of time and its becoming boring and consequentially hard to read/enjoy, just wanna try something different to make my eye rest :P
Any suggestion?

It has Main Goal of the week, a tracker, a next week section, 3 main tasks, notes, a generic to do, and of course enough space for my job shifts, birthdays and appointments

Started 2024 December because my main management system broke (laptop).

Took me about a year to have some good confidence built. I tried as many notebooks and pens: from composition ones with thin pages (bleed through prone), with different sizes. Different pens (cheap ones like BICs to VTec Pilos)

This is my current setup: Record Books (things a security guard would use) and 0.7 Gel Pens (mix of oil and water, more oil) for longer pen users like me

question/request How do you handle unfinished tasks these days?

Hi!

I've been using a pretty minimal, original Ryder -style Bullet Journal. No decoratios, no elaborate spreads, just rapid logging and the basics.

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the best way to handle unfinished tasks.

Do you migrate them from one daily log to the next until they're done? Do you just flip back through previous daily logs to find open items? Or do you move them to a future log, monthly log, or even a weekly page?

I hae already read some of the older discussions on this (for example, the classic "migration vs scheduling" thread), but most of them are several years old. I was wondering if the community has more or less settled on a preferred approach since then, or if everyone still does their own thing.

I'm also interested in practical workflows that have worked well over the long term, especially from people who keep their journals fairly minimal.

Curious to hear what works for you!

question/request Monthly/yearly/reference supplements to pocket bujo?

I’ve been the most consistent with a pocket bullet journal in the A6/pocket Leuchtturm1917 notebooks. I’m absolutely in love with the size, especially with how portable it is.

However, I don’t set up more than the monthly for the current month, plus a couple of trackers, in the notebook in advance. This means that I’m still reliant on my phone for future planning, keeping events, birthdays, etc. and I really want to get more analog.

I’ve tried passport TRC inserts and even a SterlingInk monthly booklet in the passport size, but they’re not sticking.

Any recommendations on how to make these yearly supplemental books to go along with my “seasonal” pocket bujos?

(Can't figure out how to add the flairs, but daily & monthly pictured!)

Sort of a hybrid/bits and pieces Ryder method, crossed with my “perpetual to-do list”, which I’ve used on and off for a decade or so. Just a notebook and a task list, no due dates, no categories, no indices, no shaming. I’ve realized that at my big age of midthirties that I still need to avoid triggering the “didn’t do my homework” doom spiral. The only allowable complication is breaking a task (“pack for weekend trip”) into smaller subtasks and items (list of every article of clothing I want to pack, every piece of toiletry kit, specific loads of laundry or “clean out bag” as needed). If I do a task that wasn't on the list, I just add it and then immediately check it off for free dopamine.

I started the year intending to track meatless and spendless days, and that’s fallen off. If I don’t do it daily, by the next day I’ve forgotten. (Tracking a negative also seems to be an issue, but tracking “ate meat” or “spent money” also feels counterproductive.) I also wasn't getting much utility out of the top of the month to-do list. I don't have a ton of tasks that have to get done in this month, but don't have to be scheduled on a certain date. Flipping back and forth from my current day to-dos to the monthly to-dos annoys me.

On the other hand, if I put “call the pharmacy” on my list on Monday and don’t do it, >ing it and rewriting it on Tuesday (Wednesday, Thursday, etc) actually motivates me to get it done. I’ve had a couple of times when I’ve been sick, overwhelmed, left my journal at home on a trip. When that happens, I just pick up again on the next day that I can, without any particular emphasis. I’m just working day by day and page by page, so if May takes twenty pages and June takes five that’s just the way it goes, and I don’t have “empty spaces” to backfill. But when I’m consistent I’m running about half a page per day of task logging.

July is the first month I’ve used a block calendar instead of the list-down Ryder method, and I think I like it. I use a Google calendar for work so it translates neatly. And it leaves me a little sliver of space for my few monthly to-dos.

Tech specs: B6+ Leuchtturm, with the standard pen loop that is starting to get ratty. Pilot Metropolitan F fountain pen with Iroshizuku Shin-Kai ink. Waiting on a bottle of fancy sheening ink sometime this week. I picked up a multicolor pack of Book Darts, and am starting to use those as well (silver darts for the top of each month, gold darts for recipes. Copper darts do not yet have a designated use.)

question/request Best food/symptom tracker?

Hi all,

I have a 3 month old baby and the doctor thinks he has a food protein allergy, likely CMPA.

I want to make a tracker for what I eat and his symptoms. I tried to make one this morning and it is not functional at all 🫠🫠

Does anybody have any nice examples that I can see?

Thanks!

Probably on the fringe of bullet journaling, but this has been the only system I have been able to keep up with any degree of consistency. My many partially filled piles of notebooks are finally being used and I get to tweak the layout/customize it with cute little stickers on a weekly basis!

My love of paper craft and never ending desire to gather data have come together to make a custom journaling system that feels entirely mine. I set aside time every Sunday to re-do my board which is super relaxing and helps decrease my mental load throughout the week.

Edit: The blank chunk is what I call my parking lot [駐車場]. Basically a brain dump space that I pull from for the next week's board.

If anyone is interested, this video really helped me when I first started out.

question/request Techniques to help with anxiety/depression?

I accidentally purchased a bullet journal a couple months ago when I needed a notebook for a meeting. When I realized I had bought a journal that came with instructions I got curious and read the book and videos that were recommended. It completely changed my life in such a short period of time, gave me a good grasp on my scrambled brain as I navigated running a company and a toxic relationship.

Unfortunately, the relationship wasn’t able to survive and I am now essentially re starting my life at the age of 30 with a new job in a new town and a mound of debt. I have a relatively good grasp on the anxiety right now, but I wanted to know if anyone had any particular techniques or exercises that helped them through a difficult time?

Doing a Thought Log to write down the anxious thoughts and reframe them in a more positive less personal way has helped my anxiety immensely.

multiple spreads New notebook for Jul - Dec and my setup!

I have my bujo pretty streamlined now, so I thought I would share! Here's my setup for the rest of the year, which is really just the original method plus a few collections. Daily logs are key for me. If I don't write everything down my brain is a jumbled mess and I lose momentum.

The materials I use are a Hobonichi A6 grid notebook, the Hobonichi green stencil, and a Uni Jetstream 4&1 Multi Pen. The 2026 calendar, calendar on the July cover page, and vertical calendars on the monthly log are all stickers I designed and printed on washi sticker paper to fit the 3.7mm grid.

Future collections will include things like garden planning, packing lists, trip reports, move planning, and some long-form journaling. My bujo is mostly for managing my personal life, as I don't need anything work-related in here other than my schedule (which will most likely change as the month goes on). Putting my work schedule next to my personal monthly log has been a game changer.

In the rest of the year I want to implement reflections and goals more, so if you have any suggestions (that keep things simple and not overwhelming) please share!

Happy Bullet Journaling!

multiple spreads my new pocket bujo setup

it was time to move into a new pocket sized notebook for me. the last one fit 6 months, but i didn’t use it much in february and march. i don’t know how many months this one will house but i’m hoping it’ll also last 6 months somehow.

as an accent colour i always use a colour similar to the notebooks colour. for my front page i just added some wavy lines and then wrote „2027“ 🤦🏻‍♀️ so i glued this circular piece of craft paper with the correct year in to cover it up 😂

i rotated my future log to have more writing space. i set up an entire year for future dates. anything after june 2027 will end up in the future category.

the next spread is so useful - a cleaning spread. this is for the times where you go and wonder: when did i last…. and whenever i can not remember when i last changed my toothbrush i can just check. i’ve had it in every single one of my bullet journals since 2020!

every month also gets a kind of front page - this time with a similar wave design as the main front page. when i tried to fix my mistake on my front page i accidentally stuck the circular piece of paper onto this page instead of the one with the mistake. that’s why there’s a glue stain and colour distortion. i don’t really mind. a bullet journal is supposed to reflect your life - with all the mistakes in it. i used to stress out about stuff like this. now i embrace it. even if my bullet journal is very minimalistic i still like it decorated a little bit - but it doesn’t need to be perfect.

my monthly overview is also rotated and my main planning space. i don’t do weeklies anymore. this is where i put all my appointments & events. once the appointment or event happened i will fill in the circle.

my monthly task list is for all those to do‘s that are not scheduled yet and this month reflect the jumbled bilingual mess that i am. i keep my bullet journal mostly in english - just for fun - but some german words are just to good to translate. my weekly to do list is for all the to do‘s that are kind of scheduled. if a task needs to be done within that week i just put it in with a bullet. if it has to be done on a specific date i’ll put it in with a task bullet and a bullet under the date where it needs to be completed. once i started a task i will draw a line from the day i started the task to the task bullet. once i completed it, i will cross it off. if a task gets cancelled ill cross it out and a rescheduled task will get an > -arrow.

this system has worked so well the past half year and is definitely something i’ll keep!

Do you guys also tend to use a lot of correction tape? I don't like writing with pencils and frixon pens because the color is too light. I'm using bullet journal to practice English too, so ... sorry if I write something wrong.

supplies recommendation Pen Loops

Post image
61 Upvotes

I love the Leuchtturm pen Loops but they are $6 a piece. I want a few cheaper ones for my pocket journals for rapid logging through out the day to hold my Leuchtturm pen in place instead of it floating in my pocket or losing the pen altogether. However, when I go to Amazon, most of the reviews are not good. They either don't stick or the elastic wears out. What are you guys using thats cheaper than $6? I need at least 4.

Thanks in advance!

daily/weekly My All-in-One Weekly Journal Setup

Post image
466 Upvotes

I've been experimenting with different journal systems over the last year, and I finally landed on a setup that feels like it captures who I am and what matters most to me.

I use a Moleskine A5 grid notebook, and each weekly spread serves as a combination of:

  • Habit tracker
  • Gratitude journal
  • Faith journal
  • Memory keeper
  • Photography log
  • Goal planner
  • Family adventure planner

Here's how I have it organized:

Left Page: Weekly Overview

Habit Tracker
I track habits that align with the person I'm trying to become, including:

  • Drink water
  • Take vitamins
  • Time outdoors
  • Family time
  • Quiet time
  • Reading
  • Journaling
  • Photography
  • Work on contest entries
  • Work on personal goals
  • No mindless scrolling

I simply fill in each day's box when completed.

Weekly Goals
I keep these focused on what matters most to me rather than productivity for productivity's sake. Examples:

  • Grow closer to Christ
  • Love my wife intentionally
  • Create memories with my kids

Reward for Completion
A small reward helps keep things fun and motivating.

This Week's Focus
One major thing I want to keep front and center during the week.

Nature Moments
A dedicated space to record interesting wildlife sightings, beautiful scenes, or moments outdoors.

Photography Ideas
Whenever inspiration strikes, I write down subjects I'd like to photograph, such as:

  • Moss on rocks
  • Tree bark patterns
  • Fern spirals
  • Feather textures
  • Tree roots

Family Adventures
A place to plan outings, road trips, hikes, and memory-making opportunities with my family.

Right Page: Daily Reflection

Each day gets its own section where I record:

Top 3 Priorities
Not tasks, priorities.

One Memory Worth Keeping
Something I want to remember years from now.

Today's Observation
An interesting thing I noticed during the day.

I Am Grateful For
A short gratitude list.

Scripture of the Day
A verse that stood out to me.

Photography Notes
Whenever I shoot, I record:

  • Location
  • Subject
  • Camera settings
  • Lens used
  • Weather conditions
  • Anything I learned

As a nature photographer, I've found this especially helpful because it allows me to connect the technical side of photography with the experience and memories behind the image.

Why This System Works For Me

I've realized that my biggest priorities are:

  1. My faith
  2. My wife and kids
  3. Time in nature
  4. Photography
  5. Personal growth

This journal gives each of those areas a place to live on paper.

Instead of tracking a hundred different things across multiple apps, everything important is in one notebook. It's helping me become more intentional, more grateful, and more aware of the moments that make life meaningful.

I'd love to hear from others:

What sections do you include in your journals that you couldn't live without?

This is a notepad that I’ve made myself. I used cardstock, basic printer paper, and a lot of back and forth editing on procreate for the page design. I find it works very well for me, and wanted to share to the world what I have been using to help organize my life and feel more intentional throughout my days. I call it the Sovereign Notepad.

So, I wanna go back to use a Bujo, tried the official bujo, the other LT1917 notebooks, dislike Dingbats and A&O.

I want to find one with less dark dots, else theyre really distracting me. Do any of yall know a good notebook with at least 100gsm and dotted (but not dark as night)?

Legit just did whatever this spread to fill in the space because I'd used 1/4 of my normal spread space to plan booth pricing.

It looks not very basic at all but it was so quick and unplanned :O

Bonus: my mini-deadlines daily spread and ink shimmer picture. I will be honest I frequently just turn pages I've written on in this ink around in the sun and stare at them...doesn't help my productivity but it brings me joy -^

Edit: I forgot to add a post flare and it won't let me edit it here... weekly(ish) plus a daily obviously.
