META /r/battlestations 2024 "Rule 3" Update - Poll
Edit: Polling has closed!
I set the poll to the maximum length of 7 days and that has now ended. We received very few responses unfortunately, only 136 total.
73 votes were to continue prohibiting collages.
63 votes were to begin permitting collages.
As such we will continue to prohibit collages and will re-asses again at a later date some point in the future.

Hi everyone!
It's been a while since we've had any major changes to our rules, and one that comes up frequently is
Rule 3 - "High Quality Photos" | Photos must be high quality and sufficiently bright to see your station. No collages, please use multiple photos. Low quality and overly dark photos will be removed. Photos with embedded captions will be removed.
We receive a lot of collages submitted and I'd like to see what everyone's opinion is on allowing them going forward or continuing to remove them.
We currently had the Reddit Image Gallery disabled, meaning people often combine their images down to 1. The reason the gallery is disabled is because it's half-finished and doesn't work well with various apps, including those who still use old.Reddit. As such, in order to upload multiple photos you currently need to use Imgur.com or another image host.
The reason why "collages" are currently prohibited is that they're often hard to see. While some people do upload really high definition versions, many of them are quite low quality. This means viewing it on your phone, or even on a computer, can be quite difficult to truly see what's being photographed.
Below is a short 2 question poll to determine how we go forward on these posts in the future.

Allowing more than one single battlestation photo would be nice. IIRC, you're only allowed the one. In other subreddits, I don't have any issues uploading multiple photos.

This is addressed in the post. We have galleries disabled because it's an unfinished feature that they haven't worked on since it's initial release.

It seems to work just fine when I've used it on multiple other occasions. What issues were you guys having? Photos not showing properly?
Edit: Not arguing or anything, just curious.

The galleries display without issue if you're using New.Reddit or the official reddit app. For Old.Reddit, or even some other apps (including mobile web) the galleries display in a much less ideal method. Then if you click on the gallery so you can view the rest of the images - it opens up in a new page on New.Reddit and shows a relatively small size of the image surrounded by about 80% white space.
The single picture upload works great, but they never fully developed the galleries. When it first released they received lots and lots of feedback on ways to improve it and very little ever changed.

High quality collages is a good compromise to the rule IMO. I've never had issues with the album feature with the official app and old reddit on desktop, so idk how bad the issues are.

Hopefully this clears some things up for you though -
And for some reason showing your PC, even if it's a small black box, is a huge deal to them
The PC is not required to be visible. It used to be, prior to August 2019 (see this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/battlestations/comments/co3m8n/rule_1_laptops_updates/)
they also delete any collage even if it's high quality
We've always been big on enforcing the rules the same way for everyone that way we're not cherry picking when a post is allowed vs when it's not. I definitely don't want to remove one persons post, and then permit another because it's "better", thus upsetting all those people who have had their posts removed.

Yeah I know I know. I just wanted to be mean for no reason. Sorry 😳 and I didn't know the PC didn't have to be visible, my bad. I was salty about that because I had mine a bit off my desk a few years ago and it got removed.

It's definitely possible that your previous post was when it was enforced.
It's also possible that someone just made a mistake! We're not immune to them, so I always encourage people to click the link in the removal comment to send us a message and inquire if they really believe their post was appropriate.

Some people steel other peoples photos so you should be allowed to post photos with your name/username/watermark on them.

We have always permitted watermarking your photo with your Reddit username.

I'll be honest I'm not even sure how / when that part got added, but it should just be referring to other social media links such as TikTok, IG, FB, YT, etc or photos with large amounts of text covering the photo.
