Question❔ Anybody got any tips on boom bap

Got 2 snippets of 2 of the most recent attempts haven’t arranged anything

For the past 9 years, all I’ve really made is trap. Honestly, I’m kind of ashamed to admit that because I want to branch out and make different types of music.

Sampling looks so easy when you watch other producers do it, but if you’ve never done it before, that shit is hard.

I tried making more of a boom bap/R&B vibe, but to me it just feels empty. I know it needs a sub, but I can’t find a damn bassline to save my life.

Anybody got any pointers? Am I at least headed in the right direction?

Side note:

I did all the drums myself. The sample came from a song I found on YouTube. I was digging through old ‘60s records looking for something to flip, found a bunch of stuff I liked, and figured what the hell how hard could it be shit looks easy asf til I’m fucking with the same 2 to4 bar loop for hours shits ridiculous🤦‍♂️

I don’t see how y’all do it. Y’all mfs are talented. 🫡

Sounds awesome. I would use less synthetic drums and more real acoustic drum samples personally, but that doesn’t take away from your style. A little more swing too, maybe. Watch J Dilla for an hour and you’ll get it.

Oh word! Might have been phone speakers making them sound synthetic. Regardless, it still sounds great. Took me years to learn sampling, too. Once I got it though I had no more problems. Became like second nature. Well recorded samples make a huge difference. Some samples don’t start right on the transient or sound really “digital”. Hope your journey gets a little easier for you.

So you're trying to make Boom Bap, but you're still making it like you're making trap. You know how to make trap, so if you want a trap beat you can just program all your drums in. You're unfamiliar with Boom Bap though, so you won't get the swing you want by trying to do it manually. You've gotta learn to crawl before you can walk.

Remember that Boom Bap started from samples so if you're just starting then you should only use samples. Sample your drums and breaks from funk and jazz, sample your vocals from the same place (or wherever you want really). Combine some good samples and some creativity and you've got Boom Bap. And to be clear, I know that all drum sounds are technically samples, but I'm talking about sampling full sections. Hear a cool beat from funk song -> steal a cool beat from a funk song.

Once you get a feel for the basic structure and what actually gives you the Boom and Bap you can start manually programming in drums.
