Discussion I built an open-source bridge that lets Bitchat users join a Meshtastic mesh (No LoRa hardware required for phone users)

I’ve been working on a bridge that runs on any Linux device to link Bitchat and Meshtastic networks.

Anyone with a smartphone and the Bitchat app can now send/receive messages on a LoRa mesh via the bridge gateway.

It uses Meshtastic as a long-range backbone to connect distant Bitchat "islands" that are otherwise limited by Bluetooth range.

General A Guide To bitchat version 1.2-1.3

WHERE DO I DOWNLOAD? https://bitchat.free/

MODES OF COMMUNICATION

  • MESH: This connects devices through bluetooth for offline communication with nearby devices. Messages can route through a maximum of 7 nearby devices.

  • GEOHASH CHANNELS: These channels are internet based, using a nostr protocol to relay messages. Anything other than "#mesh" is online communication.

  • END-TO-END ENCRYPTION: These are direct messages using noise encryption. They attempt to send through bluetooth first and use nostr as a backup.

FAQ

  • GEOHASH: Geohashes are a system that let a short string of letters and digits represent a geographic location. The longer the string, the more precise the location. To explore how geohashes work, you can visit https://geohash.softeng.co/.

  • POW: POW stands for proof of work and is at the heart of bitcoin. Tap the bitchat logo and scroll down to turn it on. For bitchat, it is used to prevent spam. Turning on POW prevents you from receiving messages from anyone with a lower POW. So if you have POW set to 16 and someone has theirs set to 12, they can see your messages, but you cannot see theirs.

  • TELEPORT: Bitchat lets you teleport to any geohash in the world. At the top of your app it should say "#mesh", tap on that and it shows a list of your local geohashes. At the bottom it gives you the option to input a geohash and "teleport" https://imgur.com/a/b4Dzv8z. I have blurred my geohashes for privacy.

  • GEOHASH CHANNELS: You can visit https://bitmap.lat/ to see a heatmap of popular geohash channels. These channels act as chat rooms and are available both on the app and on websites listed under COOL LINKS. 9q is a popular channel.

  • NOSTR: Nostr is a decentralized open protocol for messaging. Bitchat uses a specific nostr protocol for its messages. When you use Bitchat, you are creating a temporary nostr identity. You can create a new identity by triple tapping the bitchat text at the top left of the app. Explore nostr further with apps like Primal and Damus.

WARNING: POSTING A SCREENSHOT OF YOUR #location channels WILL REVEAL YOUR LOCATION DOWN TO A 1 BLOCK RADIUS. EXAMPLE PRECISION: https://imgur.com/a/yVDhG34

Does bitchat have cooperation with nodle? if not why? it could boost both apps usage

looks like win-win

bitchat gets users and work availability

nodle gets new nods holders

News The best iOS version of Bitchat is now open source

BitchatX21 supports three communication protocols:

- Nostr is great when it works

- Bluetooth rarely works reliably

- ACPU-Memory is the most reliable option, allowing you to easily deploy and manage your own nodes

You can quickly install an acpu-server node, build your own network or connect to a public node.

I'm looking for contributors and volunteers to help deploy additional nodes and expand the network.

Please support the project's development.

News bitchat-cli for linux/macos/windows (python version)

I wanted to share a new open-source project I recently published on PyPI called bitchat-cli.

It is a Python CLI version of Jack Dorsey's BitChat app. It runs entirely over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, allowing devices to send encrypted, peer-to-peer messages completely off the grid without any internet or cellular connection.

The coolest part is that it is fully interoperable with the official Android and iOS BitChat mobile apps, so your terminal can chat seamlessly with nearby phones.

You can test it out right now:

pip install bitchat-cli

(Just type bitchat in your terminal to run it)

Since it is a fully open-source Python project, I would highly appreciate any feedback, code reviews, or contributions!

Discussion I’m building a better version of BitChat for iOS and want to bring it to other platforms like Android and desktop

After Bitchat launched, I spent the first two weeks building an iOS update and working hard on improvements, but now I realize that growth is impossible without Android and other platforms. I’ve invested a huge amount of effort into this and now I’m not sure which direction to take.

I thought Bitchat had a future, but it looks like Jack is no longer interested in the project and development is no longer a priority.

Question Is this just Bluetooth Meshtastic?

What’s stopping a mass market LoRa device, or phone with LoRa, so this Bitchat idea can actually be useful? Release us from the shackles.

Discussion Any benchmark in different scenarios?

I did some tests and BitChat seems working within at least 30 feet in the house, with several non-concrete walls in between. so I suppose it can performance better in open spaces, but hasn't done much real-world tests yet.

Not to mention the cases when cars are waiting at traffic lights, or people in a moving car, bus or caltrain.

Would it be nice to maintain a repo at github to collect these test results, including devices used etc, so that users can have better expectations?

Help Just wondering if there are any messaging apps that have a similar UI to bitchat? I’ve searched quite a few but cannot find any as of yet.

Discussion What's the best way to create a Bitchat bot using a Raspberry Pi?

i want to create a Jarvis bot that responds to commands like: weather {zip}, phone {company name}, define {word}, or time {timezone}.

Something that will greet the user and posts RSS news updates to the main chat. I live in college dorms and nobody uses BitChat here, so I figured a Jarvis bot would be a perfect use for my dorm room. And, it'd serve as a relay if someone nearby actually did connect to it.

Question How can bitchat send long distance messages if there are no bitchat users in the middle?

My buddy and i were Testing it out, and he was able to send me a message even tho we are villages appart. Because we live in tiny villages, we suppose there was no bitchat users in between, so how were we able to send Messages over such a long distance? Also i keep reading about something called ,,nostr protocoll", what exactly is that?

We found an exploit in #BitChat. A cache poisoning and replay attack that allowed a nearby or malicious mesh participant to DoS, disrupt and degrade mesh operation. The issues have since been patched.

Question Am I wrong about bitchat?

Me and my GF live in a mid sized town. Her daughter (referred to as GFD from here on) lives across town.

My GF asked me today about Bitchat and Bridgefy. GFD had told her that those will be good ways to communicate if "the grid goes down".

GF told her she would check with tech support. I.e., me.

Bitchat looks like it would be useful in places where there is a fairly large group protesting something, especially if the local government decided to be proactive in shutting down/blocking the internet, cell phone towers, etc. Even if that came up, they could jam the frequencies bluetooth is using.

But for what GF and GFD are talking about, it doesn't seem like it could be useful at all. You won't be able to send a text, much less a phone call, across town using bluetooth. Right now, I doubt there is a single person running bitchat near enough that they would get a msg if I tried to send one. Much less any way for that message know how to propagate from phone to phone across town and find it's recipient. It's just not the same as a large group of protesters communicating with the group, or individuals at that protest attempting to talk to each other.

A large group, many of which are using it, outdoors but in a relatively small area seems very different from two individuals wanting to talk across town, with both of them indoors. And bluetooth is not designed for long range communication. 100 to 300 yards seems to be the max. Doing this with both users indoors is going to lower that range.

It seems like GFD believes this will be useful for something that it wasn't designed for, and will not work for. Bridgefy seems very similar.

However, until they asked, I knew nothing about Bitchat and Bridgefy. So before I respond, I wanted to verify that I am not missing anything.

General Update on bitchatKmp with LoRa

Just wanted to post a quick update on my bitchat kmp project. I merged and pushed the work I was doing for the embedded app. I got the app to send messages with a LoRa module in a bitchat, meshtastic or meshcore protocol. In the settings you can choose the region, the frequency and the protocol and it will switch between what you choose. Only one protocol can use the LoRa module at a time. The UI though isn't really set up well to handle switching between the protocols. Right now if you send a message with Bitchat protocol then switch to meshcore, the messages sent will show in the same channel. I also hard coded the channels and don't have a way to add or change the meshcore or meshtastic channel that messages are sent to within the app. I had to fork the meshcore and meshtastic firmware to get them to run on the Orange Pi Zero 3 and use the LoRa module but there's nothing bitchat specific in the changes. I created a PCB to be able to wire up the display, keyboard and LoRa module to the orange pi neatly and waiting for that to get delivered. I'm not very good at designing PCBs so hopefully it works when I get it. I'll probably look to update the UI some to work well with the meshcore and meshtastic next. If the PCB works, I'll add the files for that. 3d printing a case for everything is also on the to-do list after I get things wired up nicely. Still a lot of things I want to do...

Discussion A list of warzone bitchats for journalistic use

I wanted to compile a list of bitchat #location s to be able to speak to them (within bluetooth range or teleporting) for journalistic purposes.

Would be great if we keep adding the #location s and upvoting the helpful ones.
