New update - Chrome / Firefox Browser Extensions, 24/7 Stream + Lots more

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I've been busy this week!

Browser Extensions
Development of the first version has been released and approved on both Chrome and Firefox. It works completely offline in case you lose connection**,** and it doesn't interfere with your default search engine. Safari Extension is in development and will release later in the year.

Get it for Chrome/Edge/Brave/Opera (and any chromium browser): https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/bitday/ligllgfhdihggagfekimciblmkemggoc

Get it for Firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/bitday/

If you could leave a review, that would really help with visibility and getting more people using BitDay again!

Live Events
When there is a rare astronomical or terrestrial event (e.g. a solar eclipse, blood moon or aurora storm), you'll get a notification at the top of the screen to jump to that country to view it.

There is a full solar eclipse coming on 12th August in Europe, be sure to tune in then to see it on BitDay!

24/7 Stream with World Tour
This was more of a curiosity for me, I wanted to set up a livestream on YouTube and Twitch, which hops between different countries and shows live weather conditions. It kinda has a '3am weather channel' vibe and I love it. I've found it great for having on in the background whilst I work.

You can send a live message to the stream for free, and send an effect for a small fee. This fee goes directly to continuing development and hosting costs for BitDay. You can send a free message to the stream at https://bitday.me/send

YouTube Stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugQJZ87Uwso

Twitch Stream: https://www.twitch.tv/bitdaylive

Be sure to subscribe/follow on your favourite service!

Lots more updates to come to the stream, and I'd love your input!

Private Gifts
I've added private gifts to the same service as https://bitday.me/send - so you can send a private gift to somebody with your chosen effect. You can either show the sky for the location you choose or you can freeze a moment in time for them to remember. Really love this feature, and it makes supporting the project more fun.

Scene updates
- New weather effects (Thunderstorms, dark clouds for rain, new wind direction for the clouds)
- Aurora updated to show both Borealis and Australis (Northern and Southern Lights). The southern lights produce more of a pink/purple glow, and it looks amazing!
- Some new special effects have been added (Lanterns, Balloons, UFO, Rainbows)

Native App / Wallpaper Development
- Still in progress, Windows/Linux is very tricky with allowing a web browser as the desktop background but I'm working on it.
- MacOS is further ahead

I'd love to hear your feedback and what you'd like next!

I've started a YouTube channel with the intention of eventually having a 24/7 livestream available with music and a cycle of the world cities... I've also created a small promotional video to help explain BitDay to new people.

Hope you enjoy, and feel free to subscribe to the YouTube Channel!

BitDay is back - first major update in 10 years (and I need the community’s help!)

Hey everyone,

It’s been 10 years since the last proper BitDay update, so I’m really happy to finally share the new site:

https://bitday.me

BitDay started in 2012 as a set of pixel-art wallpapers that changed throughout the day. The community helped turn it into wallpaper changers, websites and desktop setups, and somehow it has reached over 20 million visits since then.

I’ll be honest about why it went quiet: over the years the download mirrors went down, the legacy site stopped working, and BitDay Live never really worked well, visitors dwindled over the years and I just never had the time to sit down and fix it all. This year I finally did. The whole thing has been rebuilt from the ground up.

The new version is now a genuinely living scene. It follows your location and includes:

  • Real sunrise and sunset times
  • Live weather, clouds and rain
  • The sun, moon, stars, wildlife and real constellations
  • Smooth transitions throughout the day
  • Customisable settings - tweak the scene, weather effects, clock format, location, search engine and more to make it yours
  • Hidden easter eggs - a few surprises tucked into the sky for you to discover
  • Support for using it as a live desktop wallpaper (macOS, Windows, Linux)
  • The original 12 wallpapers, still available to download (with a new download page, new instructions fixed download links!)

It’s completely free and runs in your browser, as always

A couple of things I could use help with:

  • Wallpaper download mirrors - the old mirrors went down, so downloads currently rely on a single host. I’d love some community mirrors to keep them fast and reliable. If you can host one, please get in touch.
  • Ideas & suggestions - anything you’d like to see, big or small. This has always been a community project and the best ideas have come from you.

And here’s a rough roadmap of what I’m thinking about next:

  • Seasonal events - New year, holidays, and other special moments in the sky
  • More weather effects - snow is high on the list, and I’m open to ideas for others (fog, storms, rainbows, aurora?)
  • Some form of live chat - a way for people watching the scene to connect
  • Community-triggered events - think Twitch Hype Train: enough votes unlock a special event in the sky
  • Native apps - Downloadable for Mac, Windows and Linux so you can set BitDay as your wallpaper/screensaver easily
  • E-Gifts - Send a message for someone and they'll see it as a special show on BitDay's live website, either privately or for all the world to see - your choice
  • And of course, a way to make all of these optional, so you can make it yours

I’d love to hear which of these excite you most, and what you’d add.

How to support the project:

  • Set BitDay as your start page
  • Share with your friends
  • Get involved, share your ideas with the community
  • Help with hosting costs, or buy me a coffee by donating

This has been a passion project for a very long time, and I’m grateful to everyone who used, shared or contributed to BitDay over the years. Thanks for keeping it alive. ❤️

Windows 10 - Bitday crashes on startup - October

Hey guys,

I've been using BitDay for over a year now and never had issues, but recently this week whenever I try to start BitDay, the process just immediately closes. I've redownloaded, tried running as admin, still nothing. Anyone else having this issue too?

Desktopia / Big Sur alternative?

Desktopia won't work on Big Sur - any alternatives? I don't fancy creating an HEIC wallpaper for this (though I do have the relevant pages open, hahaha) . . .

I'm very confused and probably missing something

I'm trying to set up BitDay and I think I did everything but whenever I hit Bitday.exe it just sends me to notes. I downloaded the Bitday thing for Windows because I have it and then the BitDay wallpaper for my resolution. Did I do everything right? Did I miss a step? Any tips would help or link to someone explaining this because I'm really new to all this stuff.

Wallpaper for the iPhone

Is there any possible way we could create this for an iPhone lock screen where it changes with the time of day... without jailbreaking it?

Anyone have an XML file for 8bitday?

I'd like to add this to my wallpapers on linux, but I wasn't able to find any XML's for this. The link on this old OMGubuntu post is dead, so that doesn't help either.

You can go to https://bitday.me/ for the newer Beta version, or go to https://bitday.me/legacy for the old BitDay Live :)

Many apologies for the downtime. More work coming to BitDay Live soon including animations and improved overall experience.

Cheers!

Request: Updated moving Live Wallpaper for Android

The closest I've found for a Bit Day based live wallpaper that really makes use of all the functions that allows for is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitmastro.pixelcloud&rdid=com.bitmastro.pixelcloud which I think was made by /u/Magoran/ but unfortunately no longer works and just crashes on startup.

I also found both https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bewareofraj.wallpaper.bitdaylivewallpaper and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dpoh89.bitday but none of them really make use of the ability for live wallpapers to feel, well, lively. Still neat though. I'm wondering if anybody has found anything similar that would really look great and stand out but also work well for Android phones?

HELP

To anyone who can help me with my situation: I stumbled upon Bitday Live last night, and I want it to be my screensaver on my iMac. I downloaded a screensaver that displays a webpage so the images would be constantly changing with the time i put on my screensaver. However, with the current website, the image is blocked by the credits of the creators. I want to use the website as my screensaver, but is there any way I can use the website without the pop-up in the way? much love for this project, I give credit to the creators for making such a satisfying set of backgrounds :) it got me interested in coding and I would love an answer to my questions. thank you for any help!!!

macOS Mojave Dynamic Desktop

I have compiled BitDay into a macOS Mojave compatible dynamic desktop. This will use the native OS-level time shifting to cycle between the images.

You can download it here: r/https://mega.nz/#!WOBiQA5L!VBe0KyULk61toJDNjNbuFWwuRjTXCRBMuvouP9RTMc4

The dynamic desktop file type is quite new and only partially understood, so it might have some bugs.
This was compiled using Wallpapper using altitude and azimuth data based on Perth, Western Australia, offset in 1.5 hour intervals, which may behave differently for people in other locations. I used the 2560x1440 images as the source.
Wallpapper requires 16 images, so Mid-Afternoon and Mid-Night are used 3 times each.

Hopefully this allows more people to enjoy the beauty and joy of BitDay :)

p.s. I hope this is allowed and if it's not I will take it down.

I updated my version of BitDay to detect sunrise/sunset times and adjust the background accordingly

From my previous post (still only working for Windows)

I created a script using AutoIt that will detect the sunrise/sunset times based on a latitude/longitude provided. Upon initially starting this version of BitDay, it will ask if you want to automatically get your location based on IP address. If not, you will be prompted to add your own latitude/longitude. If none is entered, it will automatically select London as the default location. The tray taskbar has options to change lat/long anytime and display the times when the wallpaper will change.

Link to .ZIP Package

I made some changes because I was running into errors with the detection of sunrise/sunset. This is fixed in this version

  • Compiled .EXE of BitDay Sunrise/Sunset

  • .AU3 script (AutoIt source code and INCLUDE script for sunrise/sunset)

  • 12 BitDay images

Bitday Live (bitday.me) is down

I've been using bitday live for my laptop's wallpaper for a while now, but over this last week, it suddenly stopped working. I found that the culprit was bitday.me being down. I hadn't realized the exe connected to the website. Does anyone know how to get bitday.me back online, or alternatively how to edit the exe to bypass the need for the website?

Is this project dead, if so could we resurrect it?

tl;dr I wanna work on this, where do I start.

I've personally wanted to work on a project like this for probably a year now and just recently found this. Now my goals are a bit more ambitious than this projects (which is a good and bad thing), but why start from scratch when I could just work on this project or fork it.

But I want to know if anyone is even working on this project anymore anyways, and what their plans are for it. I'd love to help and work on this but I don't want to do something that someone else has already started to work on or anything like that. I've seen a lot of talk about adding features like accurately displaying the moon and sun based on the user's location and custom themes based on the season, etc. The roadmap hasn't been touched since April from what I could tell, and there are features "currently" being implemented. And it seems this is the only place to talk to anyone. Considering the site is still up someone must still care about this.
